Lesson 20 English for Japanese Speakers: A Latinum Institute Language Course

Introduction

This is not my bag. / I am not tired. I do not like fish. / He does not have a car. I cannot find my phone. / I will not go. Do not worry. / Please do not run. I decided not to buy it. Not yet. / Of course not. / Why not? / Not at all. / I hope not.

(Isn't it …? → No, it isn't.)、I don't think so、not until、not only … but also、Let's not …

- be 動詞のとき:is not、am not、are not、was not(20.1、20.2、20.6、20.10) - 一般動詞のとき:do / does / did not + 原形(20.4、20.5、20.8) - 助動詞のとき:cannot、will not + 原形(20.9、20.11)

I do not like fish.(× I do not likes)。

- 「魚が好きではありませんか」→「はい、好きではありません」(日本語) - Don't you like fish? → No, I don't.(英語。好きではないので No) - Don't you like fish? → Yes, I do.(英語。

I have no time. / I do not have time.(no は別の課で学びます)。

nought(naught)や nothing と同じ仲間の語です。

(Key Takeaways):

- be 動詞のあとに not:This is not my bag. / I am not tired. / It was not long. 短縮形:isn't、aren't、wasn't、weren't - 一般動詞には do / does / did + not + 原形:I do not like fish. / He does not have a car. / I did not know. × I not like、× He does not likes、× I did not knew - be 動詞の文に do は使わない:× I do not tired → I am not tired - 助動詞のあとに not:I cannot swim. / I will not go. 助動詞に do は要らない:× I do not can - 命令の否定は Do not / Don't + 原形:Do not worry. / Please do not run. 〜しないようにしよう、は Let's not + 原形 - 不定詞の否定は not to + 原形:I decided not to buy it. × I decided to not buy it. I don't think so. × I think it is not good. Isn't it …? → No, it isn't.(ちがう)/ Yes, it is.(そうだ)。 knot(結び目)と同じ発音

Section D (文法説明 / Grammatical Explanation)

1. be 動詞のあとの not

be 動詞(am、is、are、was、were)の文は、be 動詞のすぐあとに not を置きます。

- This is not my bag. (20.1)、I am not tired. (20.2)、It is not cold today. (20.3)、You are not late. (20.6)、It was not a long class. (20.10)、it is not in my bag (20.9) - 形容詞の前にも、名詞の前にも、not を置きます:not cold、not tired、not a long class - 短縮形:is not → isn't、are not → aren't、was not → wasn't、were not → weren't。 論文や公式の文書では、not を省略しません - もう一つの短縮形:it is not → it's not、you are not → you're not、I am not → I'm not。It isn't と It's not は、どちらも普通に使います - am not には、aren't のような短縮形がありません:I'm not (20.2 を短縮したもの)。

2. 一般動詞の否定:do / does / did + not + 原形

be 動詞以外の動詞(like、have、know、go など)の否定は、do + not + 原形 で言います:

I do not like fish. (20.4)、You do not like fish. 主語が he / she / it のときは does not:He does not have a car. I did not know that. (20.8)。過去は、主語に関係なく did not です - 動詞は、必ず原形にします:does not have(× does not has)、did not know(× did not knew)。-s や -ed は、do / does / did の側につくので、動詞にはつけません - 短縮形:do not → don't、does not → doesn't、did not → didn't:I don't like fish. / He doesn't have a car. / I didn't know that. - have の否定は、アメリカ英語やカナダ英語では do / does + not + have です:He doesn't have a car.(Lesson 11)。 He hasn't got a car. も使います - be 動詞の文に do を足しません:× I do not tired → I am not tired.(ただし、命令文の Don't be late.

can、will、would、should などの助動詞は、あとに not を置いて、原形を続けます。

- can の否定は cannot(一語)または can't:I cannot find my phone. (20.9)。× I do not can find - will の否定は will not または won't:I will not go to the beach. (20.11)、you will not remember it (20.15)。× willn't - would not(wouldn't)、should not(shouldn't)、must not(mustn't)も同じです。must not は「〜してはいけない」で、「〜しなくてもよい」ではありません - 助動詞のあとの動詞は、原形です:will not go、cannot find - 短縮形の綴りに注意しましょう:won't(will + not だが、willn't ではない)、can't(cannot ではなく、can't)

- Please do not put your bag on this seat. (20.7)。 / Don't worry.(心配しないで)。 Please をつけると、やわらかくなります - be 動詞の命令文も、Don't be + 形容詞です:Don't be late.(遅れないで)。命令文だけは、be 動詞の文でも do が必要です:× Not be late. Let's not go home yet.(まだ帰るのはやめましょう)。

- I decided not to buy this jacket. (20.13)。 I did not decide to buy it.(買うと決めなかった)と I decided not to buy it.(買わないと決めた)は違います

It is not cold. / Not very good. / Not really. - not … any:I do not want any popcorn. (20.25)。 数えられるものにも、数えられないものにも使えます - not … until:The movie does not start until seven. (20.17)。 It is not only a song, but also a story. - not yet:Not yet. (20.28)。 Why not?:「どうして(だめなの)?」。I hope not.:「そうでないといいのですが」。I'm afraid not.:「残念ながら違います」 - not bad:「悪くない」、つまり「かなりいい」。Not bad! はほめ言葉です - I don't think so.:「そうは思わない」(20.14)。I think … I don't think he is at home.(○)/ I think he is not at home.(意味は通じますが、不自然) - 否定を重ねない:標準的な英語では、一つの文に否定は一つです:I don't know anything.(○)/ I don't know nothing.(×、標準的でない)

Yes / No

- Isn't this the bus to the beach? (20.12) → No, it is not.(バスではない)/ Yes, it is.(バスである) - Isn't Maria coming too? (20.18) → No, she is not.(来ない)(20.19) / Yes, she is.(来る) - 日本語は、質問の形に答えます。 No, it is not. / Yes, it is. ですから、× Yes, it isn't. や × No, it is. とは言いません - 短い答えは、No, it isn't. か No, it is not. です。× No, it amn't.

8. not と no

- I have no time. = I do not have any time.(時間がありません) - × I have not time. / × I am no tired. → I am not tired.

(Common Mistakes):

- This is no my bag. → This is not my bag. - I not like fish. / I no like fish. → I do not like fish. - He does not likes fish. → He does not like fish. - I did not went there. → I did not go there. - He not came. → He did not come. - I am not agree. → I do not agree.(agree は一般動詞です) - I do not tired. → I am not tired. - She is not have a car. → She does not have a car. - I do not can swim. → I cannot swim. - Please not run. → Please do not run. - Not worry. → Do not worry. / Don't worry. - I think he is not at home. → I don't think he is at home. - Don't you like sushi?(好きな人が)Yes, I don't. → Yes, I do. - Isn't this the bus?(バスではないとき)Yes, it isn't. → No, it isn't. - I have not time. → I do not have any time. - I don't know nothing. → I don't know anything. - Not it is cold today. → It is not cold today.

Section E (文化的な注釈 / Cultural Note)

I don't think so.(そうは思いません)、Not really.(そうでもないです)、I'm afraid not.(残念ながら)、I'm not sure.(よくわかりません)。 や I don't agree. I'm sorry, I can't. I have a swimming lesson.(ごめんなさい、行けません。 I don't want to. I can't. や No problem. Would you mind opening the window?(窓を開けてもらえませんか)に、Not at all. I'm not sure about that. I don't agree, because …(私は賛成しません。

Section F (文学的引用 / Literary Quote)

「もしも〜できるなら」の続きで、結論は詩の最後の行にあります(you'll be a Man, my son!)。

Part F-B (完全な訳 / Complete Translation)

If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or being hated, don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can dream — and not make dreams your master; If you can think — and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same;

Part F-C (文学的分析 / Literary Analysis)

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting。can の働きが wait と not be tired の両方に続いています。 If you can dream — and not make dreams your master。 If you can think — and not make thoughts your aim。

don't deal in lies、don't give way to hating、don't look too good

don't look too good, nor talk too wise I don't smoke or drink.

さらに、those two impostors(この二人の偽者)と呼ばれています。 この考えは、not make dreams your master と、同じ方向を向いています。

1〜4 行目は、you、you、you、too と、どれも /uː/ の音で終わります。

Section D (会話の文法説明 / Grammar Notes for the Dialogue)

- be 動詞 + not:I am not sure (20.16)、you will not be late の be (20.17)、she is not (20.19)、it is not a bad cold (20.20)、Anna is not here yet (20.24)、I am not hungry (20.25)、These are not the movie (20.28)、The story is not bad (20.29)、It was not too long (20.30)。どれも be 動詞のすぐあとに not です(規則 1) - 一般動詞 + not:I did not finish my homework. (20.16)、The movie does not start until seven. (20.17)、she did not have class (20.22)、She does not have class (20.23)、I do not want any (20.25)、I did not like it (20.29)、I do not agree (20.30)。 does not start、did not finish に、-s や -ed がつかないことを確認しましょう - 助動詞 + not:you will not be late (20.17)、she cannot come early (20.21)。will not be late の be は原形です(規則 3)。 Do not worry (20.17)、Do not wait for her (20.21)、Please do not use your phone (20.26)。 wait for 〜 = 〜を待つ。Please do not use は、映画館の人が客に言うていねいな言い方です - 否定の疑問文:Isn't Maria coming too? (20.18)。 ルーカスは No, she is not. She is not feeling well today. not feeling well = 具合がよくない - 希望:I hope it is not a bad cold. (20.20)。 it is not a bad cold = ひどい風邪ではない。I hope not. (20.22)。Why not? Do not wait for her I thought she did not have class は、過去の考えの中の否定で、thought のあとの動詞も過去形 did です - 時間:does not start until seven (20.17)、does not finish until six (20.23)。 Anna is coming, but she cannot come early. (20.21)、She does not have class, but her swimming lesson does not finish until six. (20.23)。but の前後で、肯定と否定が対になっています - Let's not:let's not wait (20.24)、Let's not go home yet! (20.30)。Let's = Let us。 Anna is not here yet. I do not want any は、any が否定の文で「ひとつも」の意味です(規則 6)。because I am not hungry で、理由をつけています - 返事:Of course not. (20.27)。 Please do not use your phone Is the movie starting now? Is the movie starting now? These are not the movie. (Lesson 19)。they are only trailers = それらはただの予告編です - 感想:I did not like it very much. (20.29)。 I didn't like it. The story is not bad It is too long = 長すぎる - 意見:I do not agree, Lucas. (20.30)。agree は一般動詞なので、do not agree です。× I am not agree。It was not too long for me.

Pronunciation Guide

- not と note:note /noʊt/ は、/oʊ/ という長い二重母音です。 - not と no:no /noʊ/ は、語末に /t/ がありません。

- isn't /ˈɪzənt/、doesn't /ˈdʌzənt/、don't /doʊnt/、won't /woʊnt/。 - can't と can:can't /kænt/(アメリカ英語)は、母音をはっきり言い、強く言います。

I don't KNOW. / It isn't FAR. I did NOT say that.(私は、それを言っていない) - 否定の文の返事の Not yet.

- not at all は、アメリカ英語の速い会話では、/ˌnɑt ət ˈɔl/ の /t/ が弾く音のように聞こえることがあります。 I don't know も、/aɪ dəˈnoʊ/(dunno)のように聞こえることがあります。

I don't know. /aɪ ˌdoʊnt ˈnoʊ/ — 意味は「私は知りません」です。

もう一文:It isn't far.
