- 그다음에, 그러고 나서, 그러자 = 순서: First eat, then sleep (먼저 먹고, 그다음에 자) - 그때 = 시점: I was ten then (그때 나는 열 살이었다) - 그러면, 그럼, 그렇다면 = 결과·조건: If you are tired, then go to bed (피곤하면 자러 가) - 하긴, 한편으로는 = Then again
(Key Takeaways):
- then = 그다음에, 그러고 나서 (순서) - then = 그때 (시점) - if … (then) … - and then = 그러고 나서, 그리고 그다음에 - back then = 그 시절에는, 그때는 - since then = 그때부터 (현재완료와 함께) - until then = 그때까지 - by then = 그때쯤에는 - just then = 바로 그때 - then again = 하긴, 한편으로는 - then what? - then ≠ than (비교급 뒤에는 than) - 접속사 «…할 때»는 when: When I was ten, … (✗ Then I was ten, …)
The English adverb then covers what Korean divides among 그다음에 (the next step), 그때 (that moment) and 그러면 (in that case). This lesson trains the reader to use then for order, for time and for consequence, to place it in the sentence, to pair it with if, and to master the fixed phrases built on it: and then, back then, since then, until then, by then, just then, then again, then what?

1. then의 세 가지 뜻
First eat, then sleep (52.1), Then he left (52.5). first, next, then, finally는 순서를 말할 때 자주 함께 씁니다. I was ten then (52.4), See you then (52.2). 예를 들어 «Let's meet on Friday.»라고 했다면 See you then의 then은 Friday입니다. If you are tired, then go to bed (52.6), Then why are you cooking? (52.14).
2. and then
- 순서를 나타낼 때 then 앞에 and를 붙여 and then이라고 하는 일이 많습니다: I finished work, and then I went home (52.7), He studied for two years, and then he took the exam (52.13). 쉼표 뒤에는 and then, 또는 마침표를 찍고 Then … - then이 문장 첫머리에 오면 주어가 바로 이어집니다: Then he left (52.5). He then left, He was then very tired. See you then.
3. if … then …
If it rains tomorrow, then we will stay at home (52.11). if절에 will을 쓰지 않습니다. If it rains tomorrow, we will stay at home도 같은 뜻입니다. then을 넣으면 «그렇다면 그때는»의 느낌이 조금 더 강해집니다. We will stay at home if it rains. (✗ We will stay at home if it rains, then.) If you are tired, then go to bed (52.6). Turn left, and then you will see the bank (52.9)처럼 and then으로 결과를 이끕니다.
- back then = 그 시절에는, 그때는 (52.8). - since then = 그때부터 (52.10). Since then, we have been friends. (✗ Since then, we are friends.) - until then / till then = 그때까지: Until then, take care (그때까지 잘 지내). - just then = 바로 그때: Just then, the phone rang - then and there / there and then = 그 자리에서 즉시: She decided then and there - at that time은 격식 있는 표현입니다. ✗ In that time, I was young. ← ✓ At that time, I was young. / Back then, I was young.
5. 대화 속의 then
Then why are you cooking? (52.14). - Then what? Taxis are faster. Then again, the bus may be cheaper. - Well then / Okay then / Right then: - Goodbye, then.
6. then, than, when
- then [ðen] = 그다음에, 그때, 그러면 - than [ðæn] = ~보다 (비교급 뒤): She is taller than me. (✗ taller then me) - when = ~할 때 (접속사): When I was ten, I lived in Daegu. then은 접속사가 아니므로 두 절을 직접 이어 주지 못합니다. (✗ Then I was ten, I lived in Daegu.) 는 So what happened?, «그다음엔 어떻게 됐어?»는 Then what happened?
I was ten then. (✗ I was ten at then.) 전치사가 필요한 경우는 since then, until then, by then처럼 정해진 짝뿐입니다.
(Common Mistakes):
- ✗ She is taller then me. ← ✓ She is taller than me. (비교급 뒤에는 than) - ✗ Then I was ten, I lived in Daegu. ← ✓ When I was ten, I lived in Daegu. / I lived in Daegu then. - ✗ If it will rain tomorrow, then we stay at home. ← ✓ If it rains tomorrow, (then) we will stay at home. - ✗ I woke up, then I ate breakfast. (글에서) ← ✓ I woke up, and then I ate breakfast. / I woke up. Then I ate breakfast. - ✗ Since then, I am his friend. ← ✓ Since then, I have been his friend. - ✗ In that time, I was young. ← ✓ At that time, I was young. / Back then, I was young. - ✗ We will stay at home if it rains, then. ← ✓ If it rains, (then) we will stay at home.
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
아이들의 말투에서 특히 두드러져서, «And then … and then … and then …» 어른의 글에서는 then, next, after that, later, afterwards로 바꿔 가며 쓰는 편이 자연스럽습니다. Back then, we didn't have smartphones 사진이나 기사 제목에는 Then and Now (그때와 지금)가 흔합니다. See you then., Talk to you then., Until then! THEN …

If 만약 it - were ~이라면 done 해치워서 끝나는 것 when ~때 'tis (it is) ~이다 done 끝난 then 그렇다면 'twere (it were) ~일 것이다 well 좋은 It - were ~이라면 done 해치워지는 quickly 빨리
— William Shakespeare, Macbeth, 1막 7장 1–2행 (Folger Shakespeare Library 판)
"If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well / It were done quickly."
곧 이 과에서 배운 «결과·조건»의 then이며, 오늘날 영어의 if … then …
- If it were done: 현재 사실이 아닌 가정에 쓰는 가정법 과거(were)입니다. 현대 영어로는 If it were over … - 'tis는 it is, 'twere는 it were(여기서는 it would be)의 줄임말입니다. If it were done when it is done, then it would be well if it were done quickly 입니다. - then 'twere well / It were done quickly: well은 «좋은, 바람직한»을 뜻하는 형용사입니다. 두 줄에 걸쳐 있어서, 현대 영어로는 then it would be good if it were done quickly처럼 if가 생략된 형태로 읽습니다. - then은 when절 바로 뒤에서 if절의 조건을 받고, 주절 'twere well보다 앞에 놓입니다.

Joon steps on a wet rock (52.19), He falls (52.20). - then 앞에는 대개 and를 붙입니다: …, and then his foot slips (52.19). Then she takes out her phone (52.21).
- 같은 문단에서 and then이 너무 자주 되풀이되면 단조롭습니다. next, after that, a moment later, soon 같은 표현으로 바꾸어 가며 쓸 수 있습니다.
- «그럼»의 then: "Then I will climb to the ridge" (52.22), "Then stay on the line" (52.25). - if … then …: "If we go down now, then we can reach the hut before dark" (52.18). if절에는 현재형(go), 주절에는 can이나 will을 씁니다. - and then이 결과를 이끄는 경우: "I will come back, and then we will go down together" (52.23).
4. 시점의 then
- By then (52.26) = 그때쯤이면. By then it was almost dark처럼 씁니다.
