मराठी भाषकांसाठी "the" चा वापर समजून घेण्यासाठी महत्त्वाचे मुद्दे: -
"The" हा इंग्रजीतील निश्चित लेख (Definite Article) आहे. मराठीत याचा थेट समानार्थी शब्द नाही. -
"The" चा वापर पुढील वेळी केला जातो: -
विशिष्ट वस्तू किंवा व्यक्ती दर्शवण्यासाठी (the book = ते पुस्तक) -
नैसर्गिक घटनांसाठी (the sun, the moon) -
एकमेव वस्तूंसाठी (the world = जग) -
पूर्वी उल्लेख केलेल्या वस्तूंसाठी -
मराठीत आपण "तो", "ती", "ते" वापरतो, पण इंग्रजीत "the" लिंगभेद दर्शवत नाही. -

मराठी आणि इंग्रजी भाषांमधील "the" चा वापर सांस्कृतिक दृष्टीने महत्त्वाचा आहे. मराठीत आपण बऱ्याचदा निश्चित लेख वापरत नाही, पण इंग्रजीत तो अत्यंत महत्त्वाचा आहे. उदाहरणार्थ: -

रॉबर्ट फ्रॉस्ट यांची ही कविता जीवनातील निवडींबद्दल आहे. इंग्रजीत "the" चा वापर विशिष्ट रस्त्याकडे लक्ष वेधतो. "The road" म्हणजे तो विशिष्ट रस्ता जो कवीने निवडला नाही.
