Lesson 12 English for Yiddish Speakers: A Latinum Institute Language Course

to - צו

אײַנפֿירונג (Introduction)

דאָס װאָרט to שטייט אין דער װערטער־ליסטע צוויי מאָל. אין לעקציע 6 האָבן מיר געלערנט to װי אַ פּרעפּאָזיציע (go to school, a letter to my mother). הײַנט לערנען מיר to װי דאָס צייכן פֿון דער אינפֿיניטיװ (infinitive): דאָס קליינע װאָרט, װאָס שטייט פֿאַר דער גרונט־פֿאָרעם (base form) פֿונעם צײַטװאָרט: I want to go, she likes to read, it is time to go.

- to + גרונט־פֿאָרעם: to go, to read, to work. נאָך to שטייט דער צײַטװאָרט אָן קײן ענדונג: ✗ She likes to reads. ✗ I want to going. ✗ He begins to worked - want, need, like, begin, hope, try, learn, forget, promise נעמען to: I want to go. ייִדיש זאָגט נאָך װיל, דאַרף און לערנט קײן צו נישט (איך װיל גײן, מיר דאַרפֿן עסן, משה לערנט זיך לײענען), אָבער ענגליש דאַרף to. ✗ I want go. ✗ We need eat. ✗ Moshe learns read - can, must, should, will, may נעמען קײן to נישט: I can go. ✗ I can to go. נאָך let און make אויך נישט: She lets him go - want him to come: ייִדיש זאָגט איך װיל, אַז ער זאָל קומען. ענגליש זאָגט I want him to come, מיט אַן אָביעקט און to. ✗ I want that he comes - what to say, how to make: ייִדיש װאָס צו זאָגן, װי אַזוי צו מאַכן. ענגליש: what to say, how to make. ✗ I do not know what say - נאָך אַן אַדיעקטיװ און נאָמענװאָרט: important to speak, time to go, money to pay, too hot to drink, enough money to pay - not to: She told him not to wait. אַ נעגאַציע שטייט פֿאַר to: ✗ She told him to no wait - אַ קורצער ענטפֿער: Do you want to go? Yes, I want to. דער צײַטװאָרט פֿעלט, אָבער to בלײַבט: ✗ Yes, I want - דער אַרויסרעד: to איז אין אַ זאַץ שוואַך [tə], אָבער נאָך אַ אײנצלער װאָרט אין סוף שטייט [tu].

- to + גרונט־פֿאָרעם: I want to go. She likes to read. He begins to work - want to, need to: ייִדיש אָן צו, ענגליש מיט to. ✗ I want go. ✗ We need eat - like to, begin to, hope to, try to, forget to, promise to: ייִדיש מיט צו, ענגליש מיט to - can, must, should, will, let, make: קײן to נישט. ✗ I can to go - want him to come, tell him to wait: ✗ I want that he comes - what to say, how to make, when to drink: ✗ I do not know what say - time to go, important to speak, money to pay, too hot to drink, enough to pay - not to wait, do not have to stand: ✗ She told him to no wait - I want to go to Vilna: דער ערשטער to שטייט פֿאַרן צײַטװאָרט, דער צווייטער פֿאַרן אָרט - Yes, I want to.: ✗ Yes, I want - to ≠ too ≠ two: אַלע דרײַ [tu]

to is the marker of the infinitive. In lesson 6 we met it as a preposition; here it is the little word that stands before the base form of the verb: to go, to read, to make. It is not a verb ending, because English infinitives have none, and it is not always needed: the verbs can, must, should and will take the bare verb, and so do let and make. Yiddish speakers have a head start, because Yiddish has the same word tsu before an infinitive in many places (es iz shver tsu zogn), and a head-start problem, because the two languages do not agree on where it goes. Yiddish says ikh vil geyn with no tsu, and English says I want to go. Yiddish says ikh vil, az er zol kumen, and English says I want him to come. Yiddish says vos tsu zogn, and English says what to say. The word is pronounced [tə] inside a sentence and [tu] when it stands at the end: Yes, I want to.

a time to … and a time to …: צוויי אינפֿיניטיװן, װאָס שטייען נעבן זיך (to be born … to die). to װערט װידערהאָלט, װײַל יעדער טייל איז אַ באַזונדערער מײנונג. דער זעלבער ריטם קלינגט אין דעם ליד Turn! Turn! Turn!, װאָס מיר האָבן אין טייל ה דערמאָנט.
