Lesson 53 Hungarian: A Latinum Institute Modern Language Course

Gondol (gondolni) - To Think

Introduction

The English verb "to think" covers several different mental acts, and Hungarian divides them among several verbs. The house list gives think as a cognition verb for a mental process. The equivalent chosen here is gondol (/ˈɡondol/, infinitive gondolni), because it is the verb of the thought itself. It is used for holding an opinion (Azt gondolom, hogy… "I think that…"), for directing the mind towards someone or something (Rád gondolok "I am thinking of you"), and for supposing (Gondolom "I suppose"). Its neighbours are:

- gondolkodik (to reason, to ponder, to be thinking something over) is an intransitive -ik verb with no accusative object. - hisz (to believe) appears in azt hiszem "I believe so". - szerintem is the adverbial "in my opinion".

Choosing among them is the main learning task of this lesson.

Morphologically, gondol is built on the noun gond ("care, worry, trouble") with a verbal suffix. The same root gives gondolat (a thought), gondolkodás (thinking as an activity) and the everyday Semmi gond! ("No problem!"). So the Hungarian verb began close to "to care about, to have in mind". It is a transitive verb with definite and indefinite conjugations. The person or thing you think of takes the sublative -ra/-re ("onto"), and the topic you think about takes the delative -ról/-ről ("off, about"). Learners must not use the accusative for the person: gondol téged is wrong, and gondol rád is correct.

Orthographic points: Hungarian marks vowel length by the acute accent (á é í ó ú) and, for the rounded front vowels, by the double acute (ő ű). The imperative gondolj is written with lj but sounds like a long j. The letter s is /ʃ/ and sz is /s/.

FAQ: What does "gondol" mean in Hungarian?

Gondol is the standard Hungarian verb for "to think" in the sense of having a thought, an opinion or someone in mind. Gondolok rád means "I am thinking of you". Azt gondolom, hogy igazad van means "I think you are right". For "to ponder, to reason" Hungarian prefers gondolkodik. The verb conjugates in two sets of endings, indefinite (gondolok) and definite (gondolom), according to whether it has a definite object.

Key Takeaways

- Gondol is a transitive verb with two conjugations. It takes the definite forms with azt ("that") or any definite object, and the indefinite forms with mit ("what") or no object. - "To think of" is gondol + -ra/-re, and "to think about" (an opinion) is gondol + -ról/-ről. The accusative is not used for the person or thing you have in mind. - "I think that…" is azt gondolom, hogy…, with a comma before hogy. - "To ponder, to be thinking something over" is the separate verb gondolkodik, and "to believe" is hisz. - The word family is large: gond (worry), gondolat (thought), gondolkodás (thinking).

Pronunciation Guide

Hungarian stress always falls on the first syllable: GON-dol /ˈɡondol/, GON-dol-ni /ˈɡondolni/, GON-dol-ko-dik /ˈɡondolkodik/, GON-do-lat /ˈɡondolɒt/.

Sounds in this lesson that English lacks or treats differently:

- a = /ɒ/ (like British "hot"), but á = /aː/ (long, as in "father"). Gondolat /ˈɡondolɒt/ has short a. - o = /o/, a pure vowel, not the diphthong of English "go". - ö = /ø/ and ő = /øː/ (long). Say "e" with rounded lips. Ő /øː/ is the pronoun "he/she"; könnyű /ˈkøɲɲyː/ is "easy". - ü = /y/ and ű = /yː/. - gy = /ɟ/, a palatal stop like a very soft "d" with "y"; úgy /uːɟ/, hogy /hoɟ/. - ny = /ɲ/, as in Spanish "ñ"; könnyű, karácsony. - cs = /tʃ/ ("ch"); s = /ʃ/ ("sh"); sz = /s/; zs = /ʒ/. - lj in the imperative gondolj is pronounced as a long /j/: /ˈɡondojː/. - Double consonants are really long: rossz /ross/, többet /ˈtøbbɛt/. Hold them for twice the length.

Section D: Grammar Explanation

These are the grammar rules for gondol in Hungarian:

1. The verb in two conjugations. Gondol is transitive, so it has an indefinite and a definite conjugation. The definite forms are used when the object is definite: azt ("that"), a possessed noun, a noun with the definite article, or a clause introduced by azt… hogy. The indefinite forms are used with no object or an indefinite one, including the question word mit.

Present, indefinite: gondolok, gondolsz, gondol, gondolunk, gondoltok, gondolnak.

Present, definite: gondolom, gondolod, gondolja, gondoljuk, gondoljátok, gondolják.

Past, indefinite: gondoltam, gondoltál, gondolt, gondoltunk, gondoltatok, gondoltak.

Past, definite: gondoltam, gondoltad, gondolta, gondoltuk, gondoltátok, gondolták.

Conditional, indefinite: gondolnék, gondolnál, gondolna, gondolnánk, gondolnátok, gondolnának.

Imperative, indefinite: gondoljak, gondolj, gondoljon, gondoljunk, gondoljatok, gondoljanak.

Imperative, definite (2SG): gondold.

Infinitive: gondolni (with personal endings: gondolnom, gondolnod, gondolnia…).

2. What you think of, and what you think about.

- -ra/-re (sublative): the person or thing you have in mind. Rád gondolok (I think of you); a családomra gondolok (I think of my family); arra gondoltam, hogy… (I thought of this, that…). - -ról/-ről (delative): the topic of an opinion. Mit gondolsz erről a tervről? (What do you think about this plan?). - The pronoun forms of the sublative are rám, rád, rá, ránk, rátok, rájuk (onto me, you, him/her/it, us, you all, them).

3. Opinion with a clause. The pattern is azt gondolom, hogy…, with azt as the definite object and a comma before hogy. The shorter úgy gondolom, hogy… is equivalent (53.6). Azt gondolod, hogy könnyű? (53.10) shows the second person. Alone, gondolom means "I suppose" and can stand parenthetically in a sentence.

4. Past counterfactual. Soha nem gondoltam volna (53.12) is the past conditional: past form plus volna. It is the pattern for "I would never have thought".

5. Conditional for advice. Én a helyedben nem gondolnék erre (53.13) uses the present conditional with a helyedben ("in your place").

6. Imperative and its spelling. Gondolj rám! is written with lj and spoken /ˈɡondojː/. The definite imperative gondold goes with a definite object: Gondold meg! "Think it over!".

7. Neighbouring verbs.

- gondolkodik (ponder, reason). It is an -ik verb with 1SG gondolkodom and no accusative object. Its target takes the superessive -n/-on/-en/-ön: azon gondolkodom, hogy… "I am pondering whether…". - hisz "believe": azt hiszem, hogy… is often used where English says "I think". - szerintem "in my opinion".

Common Mistakes

- Accusative for the person. Wrong: gondolok téged. Right: rád gondolok. - "I am thinking" in the sense of "pondering". For this, gondolkodom is the natural verb; gondolok by itself suggests having someone or something in mind. - Indefinite with azt. Wrong: azt gondolok. Right: azt gondolom (definite). - Missing comma. A comma always precedes hogy: azt gondolom, hogy…. - Mire and mit. Mire gondolsz? means "What are you thinking of?" and takes -ra because the verb requires it. Mit gondolsz? means "What do you think (about it)?". - Missing accents. Do not write rad for rád or kesö for késő.

✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾

Section E: Cultural Context

Frequency and register. Gondol is a very common, neutral-register verb, used equally in speech and writing. In polite address (magázás) the same verb is used in the third person: Mit gondol, uram? ("What do you think, sir?"). Friends and family use the second person: Mit gondolsz?.

Expressions.

- Ki gondolta volna? means "Who would have thought it?". - Gondolatban veled vagyok means "In thought I am with you", a standard phrase of sympathy in cards and messages. - Gondolj rám! is a typical farewell between friends or lovers. - Gondolom alone means "I suppose, I guess", a conversational hedge. - Gondolkodom rajta means "I'll think about it", a polite way to defer a decision.

The family of gond. Gond (care, worry, trouble) still lives in Semmi gond! ("No problem!") and in Nincs gond ("It's fine"). This shows that thinking in Hungarian began close to caring and being concerned about something. Gondoskodik (to take care of) comes from the same root, and so does gondolat (a thought). When Hungarians say rád gondolok they mean both "you are in my mind" and "you matter to me".

Regional variety. The forms taught here are standard Hungarian and are understood throughout the Hungarian-speaking lands.

F-C: Original Only

F-D: Grammar and Literary Commentary

- gondolkozám is the poet's form: an archaic, poetic first-person past of gondolkozik, a variant of gondolkodik. Modern Hungarian would say gondolkoztam or gondolkodtam. Petőfi's verb is therefore not gondol itself but its neighbour, the -ik verb of pondering. - azon is az "that" with the superessive -n. This is how gondolkodik takes its target: azon gondolkodik, hogy… "is pondering whether…", as against gondol with -ra. - hazafelé is haza "home(wards)" + -felé "towards". - egész úton is "all along the way", with út "road" in the superessive.

The title announces the joke: the plan the speaker rehearses on the way home goes up in smoke. Thinking, here, is the ongoing mental activity that gondolkodik expresses and that gondol itself does not cover. The lines show why the two verbs must be kept apart.

Every "thinking of" in the story takes the sublative: levélre, nővéremre, egymásra, rá, rád, arra, karácsonyra, rosszra, legrosszabbra, találkozásra. The ending is -ra after back vowels and -re after front vowels. Note mire and arra for "what" and "that". - Subordinate clauses. Arra gondoltam, hogy… (53.26): arra announces the content and hogy introduces it, with a comma. - "Must" with infinitive. Nem kell… gondolni (53.28) is an impersonal "one need not think", with no subject expressed. - Time words. Amióta "since" (53.21) begins a clause with the verb in the past (költözött) and means "since she moved"; the main clause has the present gondol. - Superlative. Legrosszabb- "worst" is leg- + the comparative rosszabb. The sublative gives legrosszabbra.
