Lesson 24

받다 / 얻다 / 되다 (batda / eotda / doeda) — Get / Receive / Become

Introduction

For autodidact students of Korean, "get" distributes across several verbs. 받다 (batda) is "receive" — getting something given: 선물을 받다 (receive a gift), 연락을 받다 (receive a call). 얻다 (eotda) is "obtain/acquire" — getting something through effort or luck: 정보를 얻다 (obtain information), 기회를 얻다 (get an opportunity). 되다 (doeda) means "become" — getting to a state: 의사가 되다 (become a doctor), 가능해지다 (become possible). Understanding which "get" to use requires knowing whether the getting involves receiving, acquiring, or becoming.

Key Takeaways: - 받다 (batda): receive — something is given to you - 얻다 (eotda): obtain / acquire — through effort or luck - 되다 (doeda): become — get to a state - 구하다 (guhada): get / find — seek and obtain - 사다 (sada): buy / get — through purchase - 가져오다 (gajeookda): bring / fetch — get and bring here

Section D: Grammar Explanation

받다 (batda) — "receive": Takes 을/를 (object) for what is received: 선물을 받다 (receive a gift), 전화를 받다 (answer the phone — literally "receive the call"), 연락을 받다 (receive contact), 허락을 받다 (receive permission). 받다 requires a giver, explicit or implied.

얻다 (eotda) — "obtain/acquire": For getting through effort, luck, or searching: 정보를 얻다 (obtain information), 기회를 얻다 (get an opportunity), 경험을 얻다 (gain experience). More effortful or fortuitous than 받다.

되다 (doeda) — "become / get to be": N + 이/가 + 되다 = become N: 의사가 되다 (become a doctor). State-change: 늦게 됐다 (it became late / it got late), 좋아졌다 (got better). 됐어요 as a standalone response = "okay / that's enough / done."

구하다 (guhada) — "find/get" through seeking: 직장을 구하다 (look for/find a job), 책을 구하다 (find/get a book — implies searching). More deliberate searching than 얻다.

몇 시가 됐어요? — "What time is it?": Literally "what time has it become?" 되다 for time: the hour has become X. 세 시가 됐어요 (it has become 3 o'clock).

Section E: Cultural Context

전화를 받다 (receive/answer a call) — 받다 is the standard verb for phone-answering in Korean. The construction is the same as receiving a gift: the call is something that arrives and must be received. 전화 안 받아요 (not answering the phone) is a significant social signal in Korean relationship dynamics — it implies deliberate avoidance in a way that going to voicemail does not in Western contexts.

Section F: Literary Citation

정호승 (Jeong Hoseung), 《수선화에게》— To the Daffodil, 1982

울지 마라. 외로우니까 사람이다. 살면서 사랑도 못 받고 죽으면 얼마나 억울하냐.

F-A: Interlinear (key phrase) — 사랑도 (sarangdo) love-also 못 (mot) can't 받고 (batgo) receive-CONJ 죽으면 (jeugeumyeon) if-die 얼마나 (eolmana) how 억울하냐 (eokkulhanya) unfair-is-QUESTION

F-B: Translation — "If you die having not even received love, how unfair is that?"

F-C: Original — 사랑도 못 받고 죽으면 얼마나 억울하냐.

F-D: Notes — 사랑을 받다 (receive love): 받다 applied to love — love is something received, not only given. 못 받고 (not being able to receive — inability negation) + 죽으면 (if you die) = the tragedy of dying unloved. 얼마나 억울하냐: how unfair / how wronged you would feel.

F-E: Commentary — Jeong Hoseung's poem is addressed to someone lonely. The grammar of 받다 — receiving — frames love as something that must arrive from outside, that can fail to arrive. 사랑을 받다 and 사랑을 주다 (give love) are the two directions Korean love grammar moves in. The poem says: wait to receive it. Don't die having only given.

Part D: Grammar Notes

-게 되다 (ge doeda) — "come to / end up doing": 들어가게 됐어요 (came to enter / ended up entering). Verb + 게 + 되다 = a change of circumstances brings about a new state. Not volitional — it happened naturally or due to external circumstances. 알게 됐어요 (came to know), 좋아하게 됐어요 (came to like). One of Korean's most important aspect-change constructions.

얼마나 ~ -는지 (eolmana ~ neunjji) — "how much ~ (reported)": 얼마나 노력했는지 (how hard I worked). -는지 creates an embedded question clause: 어떻게 됐는지 (how things turned out), 누가 왔는지 (who came). After 얼마나 it expresses the degree of something recalled or reported.

-아/어서 (a/eo seo) — "because / so": 포기하지 않아서 얻을 수 있었어요 (because I didn't give up, I was able to get it). -아/어서 for causal sequence: the cause leads naturally to the result. Unlike -으니까, -아/어서 cannot follow imperatives or suggestions.

Pronunciation Guide

받다 (batda) — IPA: /pat̚.da/ — Final ㄷ unreleased: /t̚/. Before da: /pat̚.da/ — the ㄷ of the past suffix triggers assimilation: 받았어요 → [바다써요] (ㄷ before vowel links).

됐어요 (dwaesseoyo) — IPA: /twɛs.sʌ.jo/ — 됐 = 되 + 었: /twe/ + /ɛ/ → [twɛ]. The ㅆ of 었 is tense. Three syllables in careful speech; often reduced to /twɛs.sjo/ in fast speech.
