What does "for" mean in Lithuanian, as in "thanks for the present", "this is for you", "I did it for you", "I lived there for two years"?
English "for" covers a lot of ground. It marks an exchange (I paid ten euros for it), thanks (thanks for the present), support (I'll vote for her), a beneficiary (a present for you), a purpose (a lamp for reading), a reason (sorry for the noise), someone's sake (I did it for you) and a length of time (for two years). It even turns up after verbs where it means nothing on its own: wait for, look for, ask for.
Lithuanian has no single word for all of this. It shares the work out:
- už + accusative is "for" in exchange, thanks and support: Ačiū už dovaną. "Thanks for the present." Kiek mokėjai už bilietą? "How much did you pay for the ticket?" Už ką balsuosi? "Who will you vote for?" This is the headword of the lesson. - dėl + genitive is "for" as a reason or for someone's sake: Jis tai padarė dėl tavęs. "He did it for you (for your sake)." Dėl lietaus rungtynės neįvyko. "The match was called off because of the rain." - The dative, with no preposition at all, is "for" a person who benefits and "for" a purpose: Ši dovana tau. "This present is for you." Ką valgai pusryčiams? "What do you have for breakfast?" - The accusative, with no preposition, is "for" a length of time: Gyvenau Vilniuje dvejus metus. "I lived in Vilnius for two years." - After laukti "wait for", ieškoti "look for" and prašyti "ask for", there is no preposition: the verb takes the genitive. Laukiu tavęs. "I'm waiting for you."
Be careful with už itself: with the genitive it means something quite different, "behind, beyond" (už namo "behind the house") and "in (so much time)" (Grįšiu už valandos. "I'll be back in an hour."). Only už with the accusative means "for".
Etymology: dėl was borrowed long ago from Slavic (Proto-Slavic \děľa "because of"), and Latvian has the same word, dēļ. Už is an old Baltic preposition. As a verb prefix it gives už- "up, over, closed", as in užsukti "to drop in" (Lesson 12). Two everyday words are built with dėl: todėl "therefore" (to + dėl, Lesson 11) and kodėl "why" (ko + dėl*, "because of what?").
Orthographic points: už ends in ž and dėl has ė. Both diacritics must be written. The words that follow carry their case endings, and these often need an ogonek: už dovaną, už bilietą, už akį (accusative). Ačiū "thank you" is always written with č and ū.
FAQ: How do you say "thank you for…" in Lithuanian? Ačiū už + accusative: Ačiū už pagalbą. "Thanks for the help." Before a whole clause: Ačiū, kad… Ačiū, kad atvažiavai. "Thanks for coming."
FAQ: How do you say "for you" in Lithuanian? For a present or a favour, the dative alone: tau (to a friend), jums (polite or plural): Čia tau. "This is for you." For your sake: dėl tavęs. In favour of you, or in a toast: už tave: Už tave! "Here's to you!"
FAQ: How do you say "for two hours, for a week"? No preposition, just the accusative: dvi valandas, savaitę. After numbers from ten upwards the noun is in the genitive plural: dešimt metų "for ten years".
- už + accusative = "for" of exchange, thanks and support: mokėti už bilietą, ačiū už dovaną, balsuoti už kandidatą. - dėl + genitive = "for" of reason or sake: dėl lietaus "because of the rain", dėl tavęs "for your sake". - The dative alone = "for" a person or a purpose: dovana tau "a present for you", pusryčiams "for breakfast". - No preposition for time or after laukti, ieškoti, prašyti: dvejus metus "for two years", Laukiu tavęs "I'm waiting for you". - už + genitive is not "for" at all: už namo "behind the house", už valandos "in an hour".

The IPA follows the broad transcription used in this course (see Lesson 10): short a /ɐ/, long a/ą /aː/, ė /eː/, y/į /iː/, o /oː/, short u /ʊ/, ū/ų /uː/, ie /iɛ/, uo /uɔ/. Palatalised consonants are marked ʲ. The stressed syllable is marked ˈ.
- už /ʊʒ/ — a short u, as in English put, then ž, the sound in measure. Before a voiceless consonant the ž becomes š in speech: už tave sounds [ʊʃ tɐˈvʲɛ], už kurį [ʊʃ kʊˈrʲiː]. The spelling does not change. - dėl /dʲeːl/ — one syllable, a long closed ė (like the vowel of French été, held longer). The d before ė is soft. - ačiū /ˈaːtʃʲuː/ — "AH-choo": stress on the first syllable, and the i only softens the č. - tau /tɐʊ/, man /mɐn/, mums /mʊms/, jums /jʊms/ — the dative pronouns, all one syllable. - tavęs /tɐˈvʲæːs/, manęs /mɐˈnʲæːs/ — the genitive "of you, of me": stress on the second syllable, long ę. - pusryčiams /ˈpʊsrʲiːtʃʲɛms/, vakarienei /vɐkɐˈrʲiɛnʲɛɪ/ — the datives of purpose "for breakfast", "for dinner". - dvejus metus /dvʲɛˈjʊs mʲɛˈtʊs/ — "for two years": both words are stressed on the ending.

These are the grammar rules for "for" in Lithuanian:
1. už + accusative: exchange, thanks, support
Už with the accusative answers the question už ką? "for what? for whom?". - Exchange and price: mokėti už bilietą (14.5), parduoti už penkiasdešimt eurų (14.13). Also "per": dešimt eurų už valandą "ten euros an hour". - Thanks: Ačiū už dovaną (14.1), ačiū už viską (14.12). The verb dėkoti "to thank" works the same way: dėkoju už pagalbą "I thank you for the help". - Support: balsuoti už kandidatą (14.9), Vienas už visus (14.15). Aš už! "I'm for it!" - Toasts: Už tave! "Here's to you!" (Genre Section, 14.30). - Comparison, "than": Jis vyresnis už mane. "He is older than me." (This už is not "for", but it takes the same case.)
2. už + genitive: a different word in practice
With the genitive, už is about place and time, never "for": - "behind, beyond": už namo "behind the house", už lango "outside the window". - "in (after so much time)": Grįšiu už valandos. "I'll be back in an hour." Compare dešimt eurų už valandą (accusative, "per hour") and už valandos (genitive, "in an hour"). The case tells you which meaning is meant.
3. dėl + genitive: reason and sake
Dėl always takes the genitive. - Reason, "because of, for": Dėl lietaus rungtynės neįvyko (14.7), vėluoja dėl spūsčių (14.25). - Sake, "for someone": Jis tai padarė dėl tavęs (14.6), ką dėl mūsų padarėte (14.12), ne dėl knygos – dėl jūsų (14.23). - The same dėl hides in todėl "therefore" and kodėl "why".
The personal pronouns in the genitive: manęs, tavęs, jo, jos, mūsų, jūsų, jų.
4. The dative: for whom, for what
The plain dative, with no preposition, marks the person something is for and the purpose it serves. - Person: Ši dovana tau (14.2), nupirko vaikams žaidimą (14.10), Čia tau (14.16). The dative pronouns: man, tau, jam, jai, mums, jums, jiems, joms. - Purpose: pusryčiams "for breakfast" (14.3), kelionei "for the trip" (14.11), skaitymui "for reading" (14.19), vakarienei "for dinner" (14.26), desertui "for dessert" (14.27). - skirtas, skirta "intended (for)" + dative: pinigai skirti kelionei (14.11), knyga, skirta vaikams "a book for children". Skirti in 14.11 is the participle "intended" (masculine plural, agreeing with pinigai), not the infinitive skirti "to assign". The stress differs: participle skirtì, infinitive skìrti.
5. Time: no preposition
"For" a length of time is the accusative with no preposition: dvejus metus (14.8), visą dieną "for the whole day", savaitę "for a week". After numbers from ten upwards (dešimt, dvidešimt, penkiasdešimt…) the noun stands in the genitive plural: dešimt metų (14.14), dvidešimt metų (14.21). The adverb ilgai means "for a long time" (14.18).
Metai "year" exists only in the plural, so "two years" uses the collective numeral: dveji metai, accusative dvejus metus.
6. Verbs that need no "for"
Some English verbs need "for"; their Lithuanian partners take the genitive directly: - laukti "to wait for": Laukiu tavęs (14.4), Ar jos laukiame? (14.24) - ieškoti "to look for": ieškojome jos (14.18), ieškojau jos (14.21), as in Lesson 13 (13.26) - prašyti "to ask for": prašyti pagalbos "to ask for help"
7. Destination: į
"The train for Vilnius", "she left for Kaunas": Lithuanian uses į + accusative, "to, into": traukinys į Vilnių, išvažiavo į Kauną.
Common Mistakes
- Mistake: už for a beneficiary. Ši dovana už tave. Correct: Ši dovana tau. (Už tave means "in exchange for you" or "here's to you".) - Mistake: a preposition after laukti. Laukiu už tavęs. Correct: Laukiu tavęs. - Mistake: a preposition with time. Gyvenau Vilniuje už dvejus metus. Correct: Gyvenau Vilniuje dvejus metus. - Mistake: per for "for". Per dvi valandas means "in the course of two hours, within two hours" (Per dvi valandas parašiau laišką. "I wrote the letter in two hours."). "I waited for two hours" is Laukiau dvi valandas. - Mistake: dėl with the wrong case. dėl lietų. Correct: dėl lietaus (genitive). - Mistake: dėl after "thank you". Ačiū dėl dovanos. Correct: Ačiū už dovaną. - Mistake: confusing the two už. Grįšiu už valandą. Correct: Grįšiu už valandos "I'll be back in an hour". - Mistake: missing diacritics. uz, del, aciu. Correct: už, dėl, ačiū.
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
Ačiū už…
Ačiū "thank you" is everywhere, and už follows it whenever you name what you are thankful for: Ačiū už kavą, Ačiū už viską. The longer Labai ačiū is "thank you very much", and the verb dėkoju "I thank (you)" is a little more formal. Before a whole clause, kad takes over: Ačiū, kad atėjai "Thanks for coming".
Toasts
At a Lithuanian table a toast is often už + accusative: Už tave! "To you!", Už mamą! "To Mum!", Už jaunuosius! "To the newlyweds!". The other common toast is Į sveikatą! "To health!", with į.
Birthdays
The birthday greeting is Su gimtadieniu! "Happy birthday!" (literally "with the birthday"), and the classic wish is Ilgiausių metų! "(I wish you) the longest years!", in the genitive, as wishes are. Many families also celebrate the name day, vardadienis, the day of the saint or the calendar name a person bears.
Notices
Dėl is the word of notices and official letters. A shop door may read Uždaryta dėl remonto "Closed for repairs". An official letter is often headed Dėl… "Concerning…", followed by the subject in the genitive.
One for all
Dumas' Les Trois Mousquetaires is Trys muškietininkai in Lithuanian, and its motto Vienas už visus, visi už vieną (14.15) is used just as in English, for teams, bands and families. Both halves need už + accusative.

The Catholic edition of 1998 on the same site has the same words in verses 24–25. Its verse 23 begins slightly differently, Tačiau jei sužalotų, tuomet atiduosi…
Context: Exodus 20:22–23:33 is the "Book of the Covenant", usually regarded as the oldest collection of laws in the Bible. Verses 22–25 deal with a fight in which a pregnant woman is hurt. If she suffers no further injury, the guilty man pays a fine; if she is injured, the law of like for like applies: gyvybę už gyvybę, "life for life". This is the lex talionis, the law of retaliation. It is commonly read as a rule that limits punishment to the size of the harm. Every one of its eight pairs is built on už + accusative, the "for" of exchange. Jesus quotes the rule in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:38), where the Lithuanian text has the short nominative form that became a saying: Akis už akį ir dantis už dantį.

F-D: Grammar and Literary Commentary
- X už X (F.1–F.3): eight pairs, each "this for that" with už + accusative. Both nouns are accusative: the first because it is the object of atiduosi "you shall give", the second because už governs it. Compare Pardaviau dviratį už penkiasdešimt eurų (14.13): the thing given and the price, side by side. - atiduosi (F.1): future tense, second person singular, "you shall give". Here, as often in the laws of the Lithuanian Bible, the future gives an order, as English "shall" does. Ati- means "away, over": atiduoti "to give over, hand back", as in atiduodu dovanai (Lesson 13, 13.30). - jei būtų sužalota (F.1): "if there were injury", literally "if it were injured". Būtų is the conditional of būti "to be". Sužalota is the neuter of the past passive participle of sužaloti "to injure". The neuter makes the sentence impersonal, with no subject. The 1998 Catholic edition says the same with an active verb: jei sužalotų. - tai (F.1): "then", opening the main clause after a jei-clause. It is the same tai you met as "that" (Lesson 10). Here it points back to the condition. - Gender: akis "eye" is feminine, but dantis "tooth" is masculine. Both have the accusative in -į: akį, dantį. - Matthew 5:38: Akis už akį ir dantis už dantį. Here the nouns before už are nominative, because the phrase is quoted as a saying, not as the object of a verb. The nouns after už stay accusative.

Part D: Grammar Notes for the Genre Section
- The dative "for". Čia tau (14.16), Ar tai man? (14.17), Tau, tau! (14.18), iškepsi mums (14.22): the person a thing is for. skaitymui (14.19), vakarienei (14.26), desertui (14.27): the purpose. Penkiems žmonėms (14.27): "for five people", with the numeral in the dative too. - dėl twice. ne dėl knygos – dėl jūsų (14.23): the first dėl is a reason ("because of the book"), the second is someone's sake ("for you"). dėl spūsčių (14.25) is a reason again. - už twice. už gėles (14.29): thanks for something. Už tave! (14.30): a toast. - Ačiū už… and Ačiū, kad… (14.29): už before a noun, kad before a clause: Ačiū, kad atvažiavai. Ir už gėles ačiū! - No "for" with laukti and ieškoti. Ar jos laukiame? (14.24), Ilgai jos ieškojome (14.18), Ieškojau jos (14.21): the genitive jos "her, it" does the work of "for her, for it". Jos in 14.18 and 14.21 refers to dovana and knyga, both feminine. - Time. dvidešimt metų (14.21): after twenty, the genitive plural, and no preposition. Ilgai (14.18) "for a long time". - The vocative. močiute (14.16) from močiutė; vaikučiai (14.17), the diminutive of vaikai, affectionate. Mama (14.30) is Grandma's daughter speaking to her own mother: in Lithuanian, as in English, grown children still say mama. - Atsiprašau, kad vėluoju (14.28): "I'm sorry that I'm late". With a whole clause, kad again. - Negation and the genitive. nepamirškite šaukštelių (14.27): after a negated verb the object goes into the genitive (pamiršti šaukštelius → nepamiršti šaukštelių). Nieko tokio (14.29) "nothing of the sort", "never mind", is genitive for the same reason. - Su gimtadieniu! (14.16): "Happy birthday", su + instrumental. Ilgiausių metų! (14.30): a wish, in the genitive. - Tai (14.22) at the start of a question means "so, then": Tai dabar iškepsi…? "So now you'll bake…?" - dovanai (14.20): "as a gift, for free", the dative of purpose, as in Lesson 13 (13.30). - Lithuanian traffic. spūstis (14.25) "traffic jam" is the standard word; in speech you will also hear kamštis ("cork").
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
- The key forms: už /ʊʒ/, dėl /dʲeːl/, ačiū /ˈaːtʃʲuː/; datives man /mɐn/, tau /tɐʊ/, mums /mʊms/, jums /jʊms/; genitives manęs /mɐˈnʲæːs/, tavęs /tɐˈvʲæːs/, mūsų /ˈmuːsuː/, jūsų /ˈjuːsuː/; accusative tave /tɐˈvʲɛ/. - Voicing across words: už before a voiceless consonant is said [ʊʃ]: už tave [ʊʃ tɐˈvʲɛ], už kurį [ʊʃ kʊˈrʲiː]. Before a vowel or a voiced consonant it stays [ʊʒ]: už akį, už gėles. Always write už. - ė vs e: dėl /dʲeːl/ has the long closed ė. Del without the dot is not a word. - The ogonek in the accusative: už dovaną, už bilietą, už kurį kandidatą, už akį, už dantį. The accusative singular of most nouns ends in -ą, -į, -ų, -ę, and the ogonek must be written. - Datives in -ui, -ei, -ams: skaitymui, desertui (masculine singular), kelionei, vakarienei (feminine singular), vaikams, pusryčiams (plural). In -ui and -ei the two letters make one syllable. - Commas: a comma stands before kad (Ačiū, kad atvažiavai, 14.29; Atsiprašau, kad vėluoju, 14.28) and before the relative ką (14.12). A comma divides the two halves of 14.15. The vocative is set off by commas (Su gimtadieniu, močiute!, 14.16). - Dash: a dash opens each line of dialogue, and in 14.23 a dash sets off the contrast ne dėl knygos – dėl jūsų.
