What does "do" mean in Lithuanian, as in "What are you doing?", "I did it", "Do you like coffee?", "I don't know"?
English "do" has two lives. As a main verb it means to carry out an action: What are you doing? I did my best. Do it now. As an auxiliary it carries no meaning of its own. It only helps to build questions (Do you like coffee?), negatives (I don't know), short answers (Yes, I do) and emphasis (I do like it).
Lithuanian has a verb for the first life and nothing at all for the second.
- daryti is "to do" as a main verb: Ką darai? "What are you doing?" Nieko nedarau. "I'm not doing anything." This is the headword of the lesson. - padaryti is the same verb with the prefix pa-. It means "to do and finish, to get done": Aš tai padariau. "I did it (it's done)." Padaryk tai iki rytojaus. "Get it done by tomorrow." Lithuanian verbs often come in such pairs, an open, ongoing verb and a prefixed, completed one. You met padarė in Lesson 14 (14.6). - veikti is a second, very common "do" in everyday questions about what someone is up to: Ką veiki šį vakarą? "What are you doing this evening?" You met it in Lesson 11 (nežinojo, ką veikti). - The auxiliary "do" has no Lithuanian word. A question takes the particle ar or just the voice: Ar mėgsti kavą? "Do you like coffee?" A negative puts ne- on the verb itself: nežinau "I don't know". A short answer repeats the verb: Mėgstu. "Yes, I do."
Etymology: daryti is an old Baltic verb. Latvian has the same word, darīt. It goes back, through an Indo-European verb meaning "to make hold, to support", to the same root as Sanskrit dhārayati "holds, supports". Do not confuse it with dirbti "to work (at a job)", whose noun is darbas "work, job, deed".
Orthographic points: the infinitive is written with y: daryti, and the long y returns in the future, conditional, imperative and habitual past: darysiu, daryčiau, daryk, darydavau. The present and simple past have a short a and no y: darau, daro, dariau, darė. The negative ne- is written together with the verb: nedarau, nedaryk.
FAQ: How do you say "What are you doing?" in Lithuanian? Ką darai? or Ką veiki? (to a friend); Ką darote? or Ką veikiate? (polite or plural).
FAQ: How do you say "Do you…?" in Lithuanian? Put Ar at the front, or simply raise the voice: Ar kalbi lietuviškai? "Do you speak Lithuanian?" There is no "do".
FAQ: How do you say "I did it"? Padariau! The perfective padaryti says the job is done. Dariau alone would mean "I was doing (it)", "I did (some of) it".
- daryti = "to do" (ongoing); padaryti = "to do, get done" (complete): Ką darai? Padariau! - No auxiliary "do": questions with ar, negatives with ne-, short answers by repeating the verb: Ar mėgsti kavą? – Mėgstu. - veikti is the everyday "do" of Ką veiki? "What are you up to?" - Ką man daryti? "What should I do?": the person in the dative, the verb in the infinitive. - pasidaryti "to become, to get": Pasidarė šalta. "It got cold."

The IPA follows the broad transcription used in this course (see Lesson 10): short a /ɐ/, long a/ą /aː/, ė /eː/, y/į /iː/, o /oː/, short u /ʊ/, ū/ų /uː/, ie /iɛ/, uo /uɔ/. Palatalised consonants are marked ʲ. The stressed syllable is marked ˈ.
- daryti /dɐˈrʲiːtʲɪ/ — infinitive; stress and length on y. - darau /dɐˈrɐʊ/ — "I do"; darai /dɐˈrɐɪ/ — "you (sg.) do": both stressed on the ending. - daro /ˈdaːroː/ — "he / she / they do": stress moves to the first syllable, and the a is long. - darome /ˈdaːroːmʲɛ/, darote /ˈdaːroːtʲɛ/ — "we do", "you (pl.) do". - dariau /dɐˈrʲɛʊ/ — "I did": the i only softens the r, two syllables. darė /ˈdaːrʲeː/ — "he / she / they did". - darysiu /dɐˈrʲiːsʲʊ/, darys /dɐˈrʲiːs/ — "I will do", "he / she / they will do". - daryk /dɐˈrʲiːk/ — "do!"; nedaryk /nʲɛdɐˈrʲiːk/ — "don't!". - padariau /pɐdɐˈrʲɛʊ/, padarė /pɐˈdaːrʲeː/ — the prefix pa- is unstressed and short. - veikti /ˈvʲɛɪktʲɪ/, veiki /vʲɛɪˈkʲɪ/ — "to do", "you do": in veiki the stress falls on the ending.
The Lithuanian r is a tongue-tip tap, never the English gliding r. In dariau, darys, daryti it is soft /rʲ/, with the tongue raised towards the palate.

These are the grammar rules for "do" in Lithuanian:
1. The forms of daryti
Daryti is a regular verb: present daro, past darė. The thing done is in the accusative: daro mankštą (15.8).
- Present: darau, darai, daro, darome, darote, daro "I do, you do…" - Past: dariau, darei, darė, darėme, darėte, darė "I did, you did…" - Habitual past: darydavau, darydavai, darydavo, darydavome, darydavote, darydavo "I used to do…" (15.13) - Future: darysiu, darysi, darys, darysime, darysite, darys "I will do…" (15.9) - Conditional: daryčiau, darytum, darytų, darytume, darytumėte, darytų "I would do…" (15.12) - Imperative: daryk, darykime, darykite "do!, let's do!, do! (pl.)" (15.15)
As with every Lithuanian verb, the third person has one form for singular and plural: jis daro, jie daro. The pronoun is usually left out, because the ending already says who: darau "I do".
2. daryti and padaryti: doing and getting done
The prefix pa- makes the action complete. Daryti looks at the action as it goes on; padaryti looks at the result. - Ką darai? "What are you doing?" (15.1) — ongoing. - Aš tai padariau. "I did it, it's done." (15.4) — complete. - Padaryk tai iki rytojaus. "Get it done by tomorrow." (15.10) — the result is wanted. - Ji viską padarys pati. "She'll do everything herself." (15.11) — the whole job, to the end. The forms of padaryti are those of daryti with pa- in front: padariau, padarė, padarysiu, padaryk.
3. The auxiliary "do": no word at all
English needs "do" to ask, to deny and to answer. Lithuanian does not. - Questions: ar + the verb, or the verb alone with a rising voice: Ar mėgsti kavą? (15.5) "Do you like coffee?" - Negatives: ne- joined to the verb: nedarau (15.2), nedariau (15.7), nežinojau (15.14). - Short answers: repeat the verb, in the right person: Ar mėgsti kavą? – Mėgstu. (15.5) "Yes, I do." "No, I don't" is Nemėgstu. A plain Taip "yes" or Ne "no" is also correct. - Emphasis ("I do like it"): an adverb such as tikrai "really": Aš tikrai mėgstu kavą.
4. Double negation
Nieko "nothing" needs a negative verb: Nieko nedarau (15.2), nieko nedariau (15.7). English says "I do nothing" or "I don't do anything". Lithuanian says both at once: "nothing I-don't-do". Nieko is genitive, as the object of a negated verb always is (Lesson 11).
5. Ką man daryti? — "What should I do?"
The person who has to act stands in the dative, and the verb in the infinitive: Ką man daryti? (15.3) "What am I to do?", Ką mums daryti? "What should we do?". After nežinoti "not to know" the same infinitive follows: nežinojau, ką daryti (15.14) "I didn't know what to do".
6. veikti: the other "do"
Veikti (present veikiu, veiki, veikia) is the usual verb in Ką veiki? "What are you doing? What are you up to?" (15.6) and neturėti ką veikti "to have nothing to do". It also means "to work, to function" of a machine or a law: Liftas neveikia. "The lift is out of order."
7. pasidaryti: "to become, to get"
The reflexive pasi-daryti (pa- + reflexive -si- + daryti) means "to become, to turn": viskas pasidarė aišku (15.14) "everything became clear", Pasidarė šalta. "It got cold." With weather and states the adjective is in the neuter form: aišku, šalta, šilta.
8. Reported speech keeps its tense
Ji pasakė, kad viską padarys pati (15.11): English moves "will" back to "would"; Lithuanian keeps the future the speaker used.
Common Mistakes
- Mistake: an auxiliary "do". Ar tu darai mėgsti kavą? Correct: Ar mėgsti kavą? - Mistake: "I don't" with daryti. Aš nedarau žinoti. Correct: Nežinau. - Mistake: a single negative. Aš nieko darau. Correct: Aš nieko nedarau. - Mistake: answering "Yes, I do" with daryti. Ar mėgsti kavą? – Taip, darau. Correct: Mėgstu or Taip. - Mistake: the ongoing verb for a finished job. "I did it! It's done!" is Padariau!, not Dariau! - Mistake: the wrong case for the person in Ką man daryti? Ką aš daryti? Correct: Ką man daryti? (dative). - Mistake: daryti for every English "make". Food is cooked with its own verbs: gaminti "to make (a meal)", kepti "to bake", virti "to boil". Močiutė iškepė pyragą "Grandma made (baked) a cake". - Mistake: missing the y or the soft r. dariti, daraiu. Correct: daryti, dariau.
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
Ką veiki?
Between friends, Ką veiki? "What are you up to?" is almost a greeting, like Kaip sekasi? "How's it going?". The answer can be a single word: Nieko. "Nothing much." Ką darai? is just as common, and asks more directly what someone is doing right now.
Doing and working
English "do" and "work" are two verbs in Lithuanian too: daryti "to do", dirbti "to work". Darbas is "work, a job, a deed": Kur dirbi? – Mano darbas mokykloje. "Where do you work? – My job is at a school." With padaryti, geras darbas is "a good deed" (15.28).
Proverbs
Two proverbs with daryti every Lithuanian knows: - Ką darai, daryk gerai. "Whatever you do, do it well." (15.15) - Ką gali padaryti šiandien, neatidėk rytojui. "Don't put off till tomorrow what you can do today." The Lithuanian Wikiquote lists it among Lithuanian proverbs (spelt there neatidėj), next to Benjamin Franklin's version of the same advice.
The morning workout
Mankšta is the short morning workout, and daryti mankštą (15.8) is the everyday phrase for it.

Source: Evangelija pagal Matą (the Gospel of Matthew) 7:12, the "Golden Rule" of the Sermon on the Mount, in the Lithuanian Catholic text given in the online Bible at charity.lt/biblija (as in Lesson 11).
Context: In Matthew 5–7 Jesus teaches on a mountain. Near the end, after "Ask, and it will be given you", he sums up the whole Law in one rule of conduct: treat others as you would like them to treat you. In Lithuanian the verse turns on daryti twice, first in the conditional (darytų "would do") and then in the imperative (darykite "do!"). The same verb is at the centre of another famous verse, Luke 23:34: Tėve, atleisk jiems, nes jie nežino, ką daro. "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."

F-D: Grammar and Literary Commentary
- darytų … darykite (F.1, F.2): the verse is built on one verb in two moods. Darytų is the conditional, third person ("they would do"); darykite is the imperative, second person plural ("do!"). What you wish for, you are told to do. - norėti, kad + conditional (F.1): after "to want (that someone…)", Lithuanian uses kad with the conditional: Noriu, kad tu ateitum. "I want you to come." So ko norite, kad jums darytų žmonės, literally "what you want that people would do to you". - ko (F.1): genitive, because norėti "to want" takes the genitive: ko norite? "what do you want?". The relative ko refers back to visa. - visa (F.1): "all, everything", the bookish word of the Bible text. Everyday speech says viską (15.11, 15.13). - jums, jiems (F.1, F.2): datives, "to you, to them": the person something is done to. Daryti kam ką "to do something to someone". - patys (F.2): "yourselves", the masculine plural of pats (feminine pati, 15.11). It agrees with jūs. - tai (F.3): "that (is)": neuter tai introducing a statement, with yra "is" left out (Lesson 13). - Luke 23:34 ką daro "what they are doing": present tense, third person, the same form for singular and plural.

Rūta (from Lessons 10–14) tells what happened the Sunday after Grandma's birthday, when Grandma kept her promise (14.22–14.23) and baked the apple cake from the recipe book found at the flea market. A story is the natural place for a verb of action: what everyone did, what they will do, and what is best left undone. It also shows where English has "do" and Lithuanian has nothing (15.18, 15.19).

Part C: Narrative in Lithuanian Only
Sekmadienio rytą močiutė paklausė: „Ką šiandien darysime?“ Ir pati atsakė: „Darysime tai, ką pažadėjau – iškepsime obuolių pyragą.“
„Ar turime obuolių?“ – paklausė Tomas.
„Turime, ir daug“, – atsakė močiutė.
Visi turėjome ką veikti. Aš lupau obuolius. O ką darė Tomas? Minkė tešlą. Močiutė darė tai, ką moka geriausiai: vadovavo.
„Taip nedaryk! Obuolius reikia pjaustyti plonai“, – pasakė ji man.
„Ką aš darau ne taip?“ – paklausiau.
„Nieko baisaus. Tik daryk lėčiau“, – nusijuokė močiutė.
Po valandos virtuvėje pasidarė labai šilta ir kvepėjo cinamonu. Kai pyragas iškepė, Tomas paklausė: „Ką dabar darysime su tiek pyrago?“
„Padarysime gerą darbą: pusę nunešime kaimynams“, – atsakė močiutė.
Vakare visi trys sėdėjome ant suolo ir nieko nedarėme. Kartais tai geriausia, ką gali padaryti.

Part D: Grammar Notes for the Genre Section
- daryti through the tenses. Future darysime (15.16, 15.17, 15.27), past darė (15.21, 15.22), present darau (15.24), imperative nedaryk, daryk (15.23, 15.25), negative past nedarėme (15.29). - padaryti for the result. Padarysime gerą darbą (15.28): the deed will be done, start to finish. Ką gali padaryti (15.30): what you can get done. - Where English has "do" and Lithuanian nothing. Ar turime obuolių? (15.18) "Do we have any apples?" is a question with ar; the answer Turime (15.19) "Yes, we do" repeats the verb. - Partitive genitive. obuolių (15.18) "(any) apples": an indefinite quantity is genitive (Lesson 11). In 15.21 obuolius is accusative: the particular apples Rūta peeled. - turėti ką veikti (15.20) "to have something to do". In Lesson 11 Tomas nežinojo, ką veikti; now everyone is busy. - Past tense for a scene. lupau, minkė, vadovavo (15.21–15.22): Lithuanian has one past for both "I peeled" and "I was peeling". - Taip nedaryk! (15.23) "Don't do it like that!" The negative imperative is ne- + imperative. Ne taip (15.24) "not right, wrongly", literally "not so". - reikia + infinitive (15.23) "one must, it is necessary to": reikia pjaustyti "they need to be sliced". - The comparative adverb. lėčiau (15.25) "more slowly", from lėtai "slowly". (15.27) "What to do with…?": su + instrumental for the thing; after tiek "so much" the noun is genitive: tiek pyrago. - The superlative. geriausiai (15.22) "best" (adverb), geriausia (15.30) "the best (thing)", neuter. Both come from geras "good". - Generic "you". ką gali padaryti (15.30): the second person singular, as in English "what you can do", means anyone. - Quotation punctuation. Lithuanian opens a quotation low („) and closes it high (“). When the quotation ends without its own ? or !, a comma follows the closing mark, then a dash: „Turime, ir daug“, – atsakė močiutė. ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
- The key forms: daryti /dɐˈrʲiːtʲɪ/; darau /dɐˈrɐʊ/, darai /dɐˈrɐɪ/, daro /ˈdaːroː/; dariau /dɐˈrʲɛʊ/, darė /ˈdaːrʲeː/; darysiu /dɐˈrʲiːsʲʊ/, darysime /dɐˈrʲiːsʲɪmʲɛ/; daryk /dɐˈrʲiːk/; padariau /pɐdɐˈrʲɛʊ/, padaryti /pɐdɐˈrʲiːtʲɪ/; veikti /ˈvʲɛɪktʲɪ/, veiki /vʲɛɪˈkʲɪ/. - The moving stress: darau, darai are stressed on the ending; daro, darome, darė on the first syllable, with a long a. Every form with y is stressed on the y: daryti, darysiu, daryk, daryčiau. - y and i: daryti has y, the long /iː/; dariau has i, which here is not a vowel at all but only softens the r. Write daryti, never dariti. - č and ž: daryčiau, būčiau, lėčiau /tʃɛʊ/; pradžių /dʒʲuː/. The hooks must be written. - ne- and nie-: nedarau (ne- + darau) and nieko "nothing" are different: ne is short /nʲɛ/, nie is the diphthong /nʲiɛ/. - Final devoicing: kad /kɐt/, tad /tɐt/, daug /dɐʊk/. Baigsi is said /ˈbɐɪksʲɪ/, with g devoiced before s. The spelling does not change. - Commas: a comma stands before kad (15.11), before kai when its clause follows (15.9), after a kai-clause that comes first (15.13, 15.27), after a jei-clause (15.12), before bet (15.14), and between the two halves of the proverb (15.15). The relative ką after tai takes a comma: Darysime tai, ką pažadėjau (15.17), darė tai, ką moka (15.22), tai geriausia, ką gali padaryti (15.30).
