What does "before" mean in Modern Greek?
English uses before for two different ideas. It can mean earlier in time (before lunch, before Sunday) and it can mean in front of in space (before the judge, the lawn before the house). Greek keeps the two apart. For time it uses πριν (prin), and this lesson is about that word. For place it uses μπροστά (brostá), which has its own pattern: μπροστά στο σπίτι, "in front of the house".
English also uses before in three grammatical jobs, and πριν does all three:
- as a preposition, before a noun or pronoun: πριν από το φαγητό, "before the meal"; πριν από μένα, "before me" - as a conjunction, before a verb: πριν φύγω, "before I leave" - as an adverb, standing alone: όπως είπα πριν, "as I said before"
The word never changes its form. There is no gender, number or case to learn. What needs care is the company it keeps. Before a noun it normally takes από, so the ordinary phrase is πριν από. Before a verb it takes the same verb form that follows να, the aorist subjunctive, and no future tense at all: Greek says "before I leave", never "before I will leave".
The word is old. Ancient Greek had πρίν, with the same meaning, and it belongs to the family of the ancient preposition πρό, "before, in front of". That older root is still at work in modern words: προχθές (prochthés), "the day before yesterday", is προ + χθες, literally "before yesterday"; προπαππούς (propappoús) is a great-grandfather; προπολεμικός (propolemikós) means "pre-war"; and the lesson on πολύ already met the phrase προ πολλού, "long ago".
A note on the script. In the old polytonic spelling the word carried an accent, πρίν. Modern Greek spells it πριν, because a word of one syllable is not marked with a stress accent. The vowel is ι, not η or ει or υ, and the final ν is always pronounced.
- πριν = "before" in time. It never changes: no gender, no number, no case - Before a noun or pronoun: πριν από + accusative: πριν από το φαγητό, πριν από μένα - Before a verb: πριν + the aorist subjunctive, with or without να: πριν φύγω, πριν να φύγω. No θα, and no present tense - The time of the sentence is set by the main verb, not by the verb after πριν: έκλεισα τα παράθυρα πριν αρχίσει να βρέχει, "I closed the windows before it began to rain" - πριν από + a length of time = "ago": πριν από δύο χρόνια, "two years ago"; πριν από λίγο, "a moment ago" - For place ("in front of") use μπροστά, not πριν - The opposite is μετά, "after". Do not confuse πριν with πρώην, "former, ex-"

One form. πριν does not change. It has no feminine or plural, and it does not take case endings. What follows it does the grammar.
Before a noun or pronoun: πριν από. When πριν stands before a noun or a pronoun, the standard form adds the preposition από, which takes the accusative: πριν από το μάθημα (88.2), πριν από τις τρεις (88.4), πριν από την Κυριακή (88.5). With a pronoun, Greek uses the strong accusative form: πριν από μένα (88.3), πριν από σένα (88.1), πριν από αυτόν, "before him", πριν από εμάς, "before us". In writing you will also see the vowel of από dropped before another vowel: πριν απ' όλα, "before everything". Everyday speech and print also use πριν directly before a noun with its article, as in λίγο πριν τα μεσάνυχτα (88.30). As a learner, keep to πριν από, which the grammar books give as the rule. Note the difference from μετά, "after", which takes its noun directly: μετά το φαγητό, "after the meal".
Before a verb: πριν + the aorist subjunctive. When a verb follows, πριν takes the same verb form that Greek uses after να: the dependent aorist. The forms in this lesson are φύγω, φύγεις, φύγουμε (from φεύγω), φάω, φάμε (from τρώω), μιλήσω (from μιλάω), κοιμηθείς (from κοιμάμαι), αρχίσει (from αρχίζω). There are three points to learn:
- The να is optional. πριν φύγουμε (88.10) and πριν να πάμε (88.15) are both correct. - There is no future tense after πριν. English says "before we leave" for something still to come, and Greek says the same: πριν φύγουμε, θα πληρώσουμε τον λογαριασμό (88.10). The θα belongs to the main clause only. - The verb after πριν does not say when the action happens. The main verb does. The same form πριν αρχίσει is used with a past main verb in 88.11 (έκλεισα, "I closed"), with a present in 88.8 (σκέφτομαι, "I think") and with a future in 88.10 (θα πληρώσουμε).
English can say "before leaving" with an -ing form, and Greek cannot. The verb takes a person ending, and the person is the one who acts: πριν μιλήσω (88.8) is "before I speak". If the speaker is general, Greek chooses the second person: πριν βγεις (88.7), πριν κοιμηθείς (88.9).
Commands. A command in the main clause is common with πριν: τηλεφώνησε (88.5), πάρε (88.7), σβήσε (88.9), διάβασε (88.14). Each is the imperative of a verb in the aorist.
"Ago": πριν από + a length of time. Greek says "before two years" where English says "two years ago": πριν από δύο χρόνια (88.12). The expression takes the accusative, like any πριν από phrase. Two short ones are worth knowing at once: πριν από λίγο (88.13), "a moment ago", and πριν από πολύ καιρό, "a long time ago", which links back to πριν από πολλά χρόνια in the lesson on πολύ. Note that English puts "ago" at the end and Greek puts πριν at the beginning.
As an adverb. Standing alone, πριν means "before, earlier": όπως είπα πριν, "as I said before". A longer form is πιο πριν, "earlier on". With the article it becomes a noun, το πριν, "the past, the before": το πριν και το μετά, "the before and the after".
Place is not πριν. For "in front of" Greek uses μπροστά σε or μπροστά από: μπροστά στο σπίτι, "in front of the house". The two words never exchange jobs.
The prefix προ-. The related preposition πρό appears as a prefix: προχθές (the day before yesterday), προπαππούς (great-grandfather), προπολεμικός (pre-war), and in the formal phrase προ Χριστού (pro Christoú), "before Christ", written π.Χ.
- Using the present stem after πριν. The verb is the aorist subjunctive: πριν φύγω, not *πριν φεύγω. - Adding θα. Greek says πριν φύγουμε, never *πριν θα φύγουμε, even when the leaving is still to come. - Using πριν for place. "Before the church" in the sense of "in front of the church" is μπροστά στην εκκλησία. - Leaving out από before a pronoun. Say πριν από μένα, not *πριν μένα. - Confusing πριν with πρώην (próin), "former, ex-": ο πρώην άντρας μου is "my ex-husband". The two words begin alike and mean different things. - Writing the old accent, πρίν. Modern Greek writes πριν, with no mark.
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
πριν is one of the most frequent words of the language, and in the vocabulary list that this course follows it stands at 88. It belongs to every register. The more formal conjunction προτού (protoú) means the same as πριν before a verb and is found mostly in writing: προτού αποφασίσεις. The learned preposition προ survives in set expressions of the press and the law, such as προ ημερών, "a few days ago", and προ πολλού, "long ago".
Dates before the Christian era are written with π.Χ. (προ Χριστού), and those after with μ.Χ. (μετά Χριστόν). A date such as 480 π.Χ. is read "four hundred and eighty before Christ".
The Greek year has a good deal of "before" in it. The festive period of the Αποκριά (apokriá), the Carnival, comes before the beginning of Lent, which starts on Καθαρά Δευτέρα (Clean Monday). The weeks of Lent and the Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα (Holy Week) come before Easter, το Πάσχα, so that πριν το Πάσχα can name a whole season of preparation and not a single day.
- πριν από όλα (prin apó óla), "before everything, first of all": πριν από όλα, η υγεία - πριν την ώρα του (prin tin óra tou), "before one's time": used of someone who dies or arrives too soon - λίγο πριν (lígo prin), "shortly before": λίγο πριν τα μεσάνυχτα (88.30) - πριν από λίγο (prin apó lígo), "a moment ago" (88.13)
Greek keeps the word for time and the word for place apart, where English uses before for both. A learner who says πριν for "in front of" will probably be understood, but the sentence will sound wrong, and the safe habit is πριν for the clock and the calendar, μπροστά for position.

Source: Constantine P. Cavafy (Κωνσταντίνος Π. Καβάφης), «Πριν τους αλλάξει ο Χρόνος» ("Before Time Changed Them"), dated 1924, collected in the Alexandria edition of the Poems of 1935. The closing three lines are given here.
The poem tells of two young lovers who must part, not because they wish it but because circumstances force one of them to go far away. Their love is already not quite what it was. The poet asks whether Fate acted like an artist in separating them now: now, in the final lines, before the feeling dies and before Time changes them, so that each will remain for the other the beautiful young man of twenty-four. The poem is chosen for this lesson because πριν is the hinge of its ending. It occurs twice, in two parallel clauses, and each time it opens a time that has not yet come.

"Before their feeling dies, before Time changes them; each will be to the other as though he stayed for ever the beautiful lad of twenty-four."
πριν σβύσει το αίσθημά των, πριν τους αλλάξει ο Χρόνος· ο ένας για τον άλλον θα είναι ως να μένει πάντα των είκοσι τεσσάρων ετών τ' ωραίο παιδί.
Both πριν clauses follow Section D to the letter. πριν σβύσει and πριν τους αλλάξει each use the aorist subjunctive (σβήσει, αλλάξει) with no να and no θα, although the dying of the feeling and the changing of the lovers are still in the future of the poem's present. The main clause has the future, θα είναι, and it is the only place where a θα stands. The poem is therefore a clean case of the rule that the verb after πριν gives no time of its own.
The repetition is the art. The first πριν names what happens to a feeling and the second what happens to the people, and the reader waits for the main clause, which does not come until the sense is almost over. Greek can hold the suspense because the conjunction opens each clause and the verb closes it.
The spelling and some of the words are not today's. σβύσει is the older spelling of the verb that modern Greek writes σβήσει. των in αίσθημά των is the genitive plural pronoun in its learned use, where the everyday language says το αίσθημά τους. The genitive of age, των είκοσι τεσσάρων ετών, is also formal, and today's speech would say είκοσι τεσσάρων χρονών or simply είκοσι τεσσάρων. τ' is the article το with its vowel dropped before ωραίο. The raised dot · is the Greek mark that does the work of the English semicolon or colon. Cavafy writes Χρόνος, "Time", with a capital letter, as if it were a person.
Constantine Cavafy (1863–1933) was born in Alexandria, Egypt, to a Greek family, and he lived there for most of his life. He did not publish his poems in the usual way: he printed them in small groups and gave them to friends. This poem is dated 1924, and the Poems were collected in book form in 1935, after his death.

The dialogue gathers the uses of the word in the order of a real evening before a flight.
πριν από + noun. Most of the lines place something before a point in time: πριν από το ταξίδι (88.16), πριν από το βράδυ (88.18), πριν από το μεσημέρι (88.19), πριν από τις επτά (88.21), πριν από την αναχώρηση (88.22), πριν από τις πέντε (88.23). The noun is always in the accusative after από, and the article agrees with it.
πριν + verb. The verb after πριν is the aorist subjunctive and has the person of the speaker or of the group: πριν φύγουμε (88.17), πριν φάμε (88.20), πριν βγούμε (88.24), πριν περάσουμε (88.25), πριν κλείσεις (88.26). In 88.26 the main clause is a negative command, μην ξεχάσεις, which also uses the aorist subjunctive. Each verb is in the plural or in the second person, never in a form that has a θα in front of it.
The θα belongs to the main clause. In 88.20 the main verb θα ετοιμάσουμε is the future, and πριν φάμε after it is the subjunctive with no θα.
"Ago". 88.27 gives πριν από δύο μέρες, "two days ago". The structure is the one from 88.12. The speaker puts the verb in the past (έβαλα), and the πριν phrase supplies the distance.
Quantity before. In 88.22 the number comes before the phrase: δύο ώρες πριν από την αναχώρηση, "two hours before departure". The measure of time simply stands before πριν. Compare 88.30, where λίγο, "a little", does the same: λίγο πριν, "shortly before".
Idioms. πριν από όλα (88.29) is "before everything, first of all". In 88.30 πριν stands directly before τα μεσάνυχτα with no από, as Section D explains. ξεχνάω (88.28) is the everyday "I forget". Μπράβο is "well done", and also "good for you".
Greek punctuation. The guillemets « » mark speech, and the Greek question mark ; ends the questions 88.16, 88.20 and 88.24. When the speech verb follows (απαντά ο Νίκος), a comma stands after the closing guillemet in a statement, and the sentence ends with a full stop.

πριν (prin): /pɾin/. It has one syllable, and so no stress mark is written. The π is unaspirated: no puff of air, unlike English "p". The ρ is a quick tap of the tongue behind the upper teeth, like the "tt" of American English "butter", and not the English "r". The ι is /i/, as in English "see", and the final ν is pronounced in full.
- από (apó): /aˈpo/. Stress on the last syllable. - μετά (metá): /meˈta/, "after". - μπροστά (brostá): /broˈsta/. The μπ at the beginning of a word is /b/, not "mp". - προχθές (prochthés): /proxˈθes/. The χθ is two sounds, /x/ and /θ/, one after the other. - πρώην (próin): /ˈproin/, "former". Two syllables, stressed on the first.
- ι, η, υ, ει, οι all sound /i/. In this lesson: πριν, μητέρα, λίγο, είναι, τις, κοιμάται. - αι is /e/: κοιμάται (kimáte), συμβόλαιο (simvóleo), ωραίο (oréo). - ου is /u/: φύγουμε (fígoume), πιούμε (pioúme). - χ is /x/, like the "ch" of Scottish "loch", before a consonant or a back vowel (έλεγχο, αναχώρηση), and /ç/, like German "ich", before e or i (χέρια, ξεχάσεις). - θ is /θ/, as in English "thin" (Θεσσαλονίκη, θα); δ is /ð/, as in English "this" (δύο, βράδυ). - γ before e or i is /ʝ/, like English "y": γελάει (yelái), φεύγει (févyi). Before a consonant or a back vowel it is /ɣ/: λογαριασμό, φύγουμε. - μπ at the start of a word is /b/ (μπράβο), and ντ at the start is /d/; in the middle of a word both are closer to /mb/ and /nd/ (πάντα, πέντε). - ξ is /ks/ (ξυπνήσουμε, ταξίδι); τσ is /ts/ (τσάντα, βαλίτσες). - The stress is always marked on words of two or more syllables. A word of one syllable, such as πριν, φως, και, is not marked.
- πριν (prin) and πρώην (próin) begin alike but differ in meaning and in the number of syllables: πριν has one and πρώην has two. - πριν (before) and προτού (protoú) mean the same before a verb, and προτού is the more formal. - The ι of πριν sounds the same as η, υ, ει and οι, so the ear does not tell you the letter. Learn the spelling with the word.
