What does "through" mean in Modern Greek?
English uses through for several different ideas. It can mean passing from one side of a space to the other (through the tunnel), going by way of a place (through Athens), using someone or something as the means (through a friend), lasting from start to finish (through the night) and being finished (I am through). Greek keeps these apart. This lesson is about the first and most physical of them, and its word is μέσα από (mésa apó), "through, out of the inside of". It is the phrase for the light that comes through the window, the road that runs through the forest and the voice that carries through the door.
μέσα από is made of two small words. μέσα (mésa) is an adverb that means "inside". It is the neuter plural of the adjective μέσος, "middle", and the same word gives the noun τα μέσα, "the means". από (apó) is "from", and it is a preposition that takes the accusative. Put together they say, in effect, "from the inside". The phrase belongs to a large family in which a place word is joined to από or σε: πάνω από (over), κάτω από (under) and μέσα σε (inside). The model is the same each time, an adverb followed by a preposition, and what comes after takes the accusative.
The other Greek ways of saying "through" are these, and each is taught in Section D:
- από alone, for the route by way of a place: πέρασα από την Αθήνα, "I came through Athens" - μέσω (méso) with the genitive, formal, for a route or a means: μέσω Λονδίνου, "via London"; μέσω ενός φίλου, "through a friend" - διαμέσου (diamésou) with the genitive, formal and literary: διαμέσου των αιώνων, "through the centuries" - no preposition at all for time: όλη τη νύχτα, "all night, through the night"
The phrase never changes its form. There is no gender, number or case to learn in μέσα από itself. What needs care is the noun after it, which is always in the accusative, and the difference between μέσα από (through, out of) and μέσα σε (inside, within). The first is movement or passage, and the second is a place where something is.
A note on the script. Both words keep their accent: μέσα on the first syllable and από on the last, and the two are always written as separate words. Do not write μεσαπό.
- μέσα από = "through" a space or a medium, and also "out of the inside of". It never changes - It is followed by the accusative: μέσα από το παράθυρο, μέσα από τα σύννεφα, μέσα από την πόλη - With a pronoun, the strong accusative: μέσα από μένα, μέσα από σένα, μέσα από εμάς - The usual verbs are περνάω (pass), βγαίνω (go out), μπαίνω (go in), φαίνομαι (be visible), ακούγομαι (be heard) and έρχομαι (come) - μέσα από is also figurative, "by way of an experience": μαθαίνω ελληνικά μέσα από τραγούδια - Route by way of a place: από. Formal route or means: μέσω + genitive. Literary "through": διαμέσου + genitive - Time has no preposition: όλη τη νύχτα, "through the night" - Do not confuse μέσα από (through) with μέσα σε (inside)

One phrase, one form. μέσα από does not change. It has no feminine or plural, and it does not take case endings itself. What follows it does the grammar.
The accusative. Like every phrase made with από, μέσα από is followed by the accusative, and the article agrees with the noun: μέσα από το πάρκο (89.1), μέσα από τη σήραγγα (89.2), μέσα από τον τοίχο (89.6), μέσα από τα φύλλα (89.4). A plural noun without an article is also correct when the sense is general: μέσα από τραγούδια (89.12). With a pronoun, Greek uses the strong accusative form, as after any preposition: μέσα από μένα, "through me", μέσα από σένα, "through you", μέσα από εμάς, "through us".
Passage and exit. The phrase fits three kinds of verb:
- verbs of passing: περνάω (89.2, 89.4, 89.7, 89.9), περπατάω (89.1), "I walk", and the aorist πέρασα (89.11, 89.13) - verbs of entering and leaving: μπαίνω (89.10, 89.14), "I go in", and βγαίνω, "I go out". With βγαίνω the phrase means "out of the inside of": βγαίνω μέσα από το νερό, "I come out of the water" - verbs of seeing, hearing and coming: κοιτάζω (89.3), φαίνομαι (89.5), ακούγομαι (89.8) and έρχομαι (89.15)
Through and across: διασχίζω. English can say "walk through the park" or "cross the park". Greek has a verb for the second idea, διασχίζω (dischízo), "I cross, I go right across", and it takes its object directly with no preposition: διασχίζουμε το πάρκο, "we cross the park". The two ways are close in sense: περπατάμε μέσα από το πάρκο (89.1) and διασχίζουμε το πάρκο.
μέσα από and plain από. For a route by way of a place or a door, Greek very often uses από alone: πέρασα από την Αθήνα, "I came through Athens"; μπαίνω από την πόρτα, "I go in by the door"; κοιτάζω από το παράθυρο, "I look out of the window". μέσα από puts the weight on the inside: a tunnel, a forest, a crowd, the mist. In 89.11 the forest is a thing that one is inside as one passes. When the sentence is about a stage on a journey, use από. When it is about the space itself, use μέσα από.
μέσα από and μέσα σε. The two differ in the second word. μέσα σε (or μέσα στο, μέσα στην, with the article) is static, "inside, within": μέσα στο σπίτι, "inside the house". μέσα από is movement: passing through, or leaving the inside. A learner who says μέσα στο δάσος for "through the forest" has said "inside the forest", and has lost the idea of passage.
Figurative μέσα από. The phrase carries over from space to experience. "I learn Greek through songs" (89.12) means that songs are the way in. "He went through many difficulties" (89.13) means that the difficulties were a passage that he lived. A common set phrase is μέσα από τα μάτια κάποιου, "through someone's eyes": μέσα από τα μάτια ενός παιδιού, "through the eyes of a child". Greek can also say πέρασε πολλές δυσκολίες, with no preposition, "he went through many difficulties", where the verb περνάω carries the whole idea. The version with μέσα από is the more reflective one.
Word order. The phrase may open the sentence, for emphasis, as in 89.14: μέσα από τα κλειστά παντζούρια μπαίνει λίγο φως. The subject follows the verb. Nothing else changes.
μέσω with the genitive. The learned preposition μέσω (méso) takes the genitive and means "via, by way of" for a route, and "by means of" for an agent or a channel. It is formal and fits notices, news, travel and technical language: πετάμε για την Αθήνα μέσω Λονδίνου, "we fly to Athens via London"; βρήκα τη δουλειά μέσω ενός φίλου, "I found the job through a friend"; μέσω διαδικτύου, "over the internet". It is pronounced exactly like μέσο, "a means", because ω and ο sound alike. (These three sentences are constructed for the lesson.) For a walk through a park or a road through a forest, use μέσα από.
διαμέσου with the genitive. διαμέσου, also written δια μέσου (diamésou), takes the genitive and means "through, across", in a literary or formal register: διαμέσου των αιώνων, "through the centuries". It is a word to recognise in reading more than one to use.
Time: no preposition. "Through the night", "all winter through" are the accusative of duration, and Greek does not add a preposition: δουλέψαμε όλη τη νύχτα, "we worked all night"; έμεινε όλο τον χειμώνα, "he stayed all winter". For a span between two dates, Greek uses από and μέχρι (or ως): από τη Δευτέρα μέχρι την Παρασκευή, "from Monday through Friday". For "throughout a place" it uses σε όλο: σε όλη την Ελλάδα, "throughout Greece".
"Finished". English "I am through" has nothing to do with space. Greek says τελείωσα, "I have finished".
- Using the genitive after μέσα από. The case is the accusative: μέσα από το δάσος, not μέσα από του δάσους. - Using μέσα σε for passage. Say περνάω μέσα από το δάσος for "I go through the forest". μέσα στο δάσος is "inside the forest". - Using μέσω for an ordinary walk or drive. μέσω is for routes between places and for means. Say περπατάω μέσα από το πάρκο, and keep μέσω for μέσω Λονδίνου. - Following μέσω or διαμέσου with the accusative. Both take the genitive. - Adding a preposition to time. Say όλη τη νύχτα, not μέσα από τη νύχτα for "all night". - Writing the phrase as one word, or dropping an accent: μεσαπό, μεσα από. - Confusing μέσα, "inside", with μέσα, "means" in the plural (τα μέσα) and with μέσο, "a means". The context decides.
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
"Through" stands at 89 in the vocabulary list that this course follows, and μέσα από is its chief Greek equivalent for physical passage. It is neutral in register and is used in speech and in writing. The learned words are quite different in tone: μέσω belongs to the language of notices, timetables, the press and technology, and διαμέσου to elevated writing. In essays and speeches, μέσα από often introduces a way of coming to know something: μέσα από τη μουσική, μέσα από τα βιβλία, μέσα από την εμπειρία.
Greece is a mountainous country, and a great deal of the language of travel is the language of passing through. Roads run through forests, and villages are reached through gorges. A well-known walking route in the south-west of Crete runs through the Samariá Gorge (το Φαράγγι της Σαμαριάς), and a sentence such as περπατάμε μέσα από το φαράγγι is the normal way of describing it. In the genre section of this lesson, two travellers drive through the mountains to a village.
One of the commonest uses of the phrase in modern Greek is in the arts. A film, a novel or a documentary is often said to tell a story μέσα από τα μάτια of a character, "through the eyes of" a child, a soldier or an immigrant. The phrase says that the reader does not stand outside the experience but looks out from inside it, and that is the image of μέσα από: from the inside, and out.
- μέσα από τα μάτια κάποιου (mésa apó ta mátia kápiou), "through someone's eyes" - διαμέσου των αιώνων (diamésou ton eónon), "through the centuries" - από τη Δευτέρα μέχρι την Παρασκευή (apó ti Deftéra méchri tin Paraskeví), "from Monday through Friday"

Source: Constantine P. Cavafy (Κωνσταντίνος Π. Καβάφης), «Φωνές» ("Voices"), from the canon of the Poems (1935). The lines given here are from the closing stanzas of the poem.
The poem opens with the voices of the dead, and of those who are lost to us as the dead are. In the stanza given here the voices come back, sometimes in dreams and sometimes in thought, and with them come the sounds of the first poetry of our lives, like music in the night that fades into the distance.
The passage is chosen with a reservation, which is stated here so that the lesson does not claim more than it can show. It does not contain the phrase μέσα από. It does contain the short form μες (mes), twice, in the position where an everyday sentence would put μέσα σε, and it describes voices and sounds reaching us from a distance, the same picture as 89.8 (a voice through a door) and 89.15 (a bell through the mist). The passage is therefore a companion to the lesson, a case of the same word family and the same image, and it also shows the contrast between "inside" (μες, μέσα σε) and "through" (μέσα από) that Section D describes.

"Sometimes in our dreams they speak; sometimes in thought the mind hears them. And with their sound, for a moment, there return sounds from the first poetry of our life — like music, at night, distant, that fades." (Translation by the Institute.)
κάποτε μες στα όνειρά μας ομιλούνε· κάποτε μες στην σκέψι τες ακούει το μυαλό. Και με τον ήχο των για μια στιγμή επιστρέφουν ήχοι από την πρώτη ποίησι της ζωής μας — σα μουσική, την νύχτα, μακρυνή, που σβήνει.
μες. The word μες is a short form of μέσα, and it is used in verse and in older writing where everyday speech would say μέσα σε. Before the article it joins with σε: μες στα όνειρα, μες στην σκέψι. Here it is static, "inside" a dream or a thought, and not passage, which is why the lesson sets it against μέσα από, which is movement.
από. The phrase ήχοι από την πρώτη ποίησι is "sounds from the first poetry". The από is the plain one, "from", with the accusative, the same από that is the second half of μέσα από. If the poet had pictured the sounds reaching us through a distance, with something in between, the phrase would have been μέσα από.
Old forms. Several forms are not today's. σκέψι and ποίησι are Cavafy's spellings with the final -ι, where today's Greek writes σκέψη and ποίηση. τες is the older form of the feminine plural article and pronoun τις (here "them", the voices). ομιλούνε is the third person plural in -ούνε, where today's Greek says μιλούν or μιλάνε. των after ήχο is the learned genitive plural pronoun, "their", where the everyday language says τον ήχο τους. μακρυνή is Cavafy's spelling of today's μακρινή. The raised dot · is the Greek mark that does the work of the English semicolon or colon, and the dash — marks the turn into the comparison.
The art. The first two lines are twin clauses, both beginning κάποτε and both with μες, so that the reader hears the voices come first in sleep and then in waking thought. The comparison that ends the stanza, σα μουσική, την νύχτα, μακρυνή, που σβήνει, is a series of nouns and adjectives with the verb held back to the end. The last word, σβήνει, "fades", lets the line die away as the music does.
Constantine Cavafy (1863–1933) was born in Alexandria, Egypt, to a Greek family, and he lived there for most of his life. He did not publish his poems in the usual way: he printed them in small groups and gave them to friends. The canon of 154 poems that he left was collected in book form in 1935, after his death.

✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
The dialogue is a drive in which the road, the weather and the choice of route each call for the same phrase.
μέσα από + noun, always the accusative. The noun is a town, mountains, a forest, trees, a gorge, a village, mist: μέσα από την πόλη (89.16, 89.17), μέσα από τα βουνά (89.16, 89.18, 89.19, 89.24), μέσα από το δάσος (89.20), μέσα από τα δέντρα (89.21, 89.22), μέσα από το φαράγγι (89.23, 89.29), μέσα από το χωριό (89.26, 89.27), μέσα από την ομίχλη (89.30). The article agrees with the noun in gender, number and case.
The phrase with a noun. In 89.19 and 89.24 the phrase follows a noun and describes it: ο δρόμος μέσα από τα βουνά, "the road through the mountains"; η διαδρομή μέσα από τα βουνά, "the route through the mountains". In 89.25 it is η θέα μέσα από τα έλατα, "the view through the firs". The phrase does not change when it is moved from a verb to a noun.
Exit: out of the inside. In 89.21 the deer βγαίνει μέσα από τα δέντρα, and the phrase means "out of", not "through". The verb tells which sense is wanted: βγαίνω gives "out of", περνάω gives "through". Compare 89.22, where the water is heard through the trees, and 89.28, where the windscreen is the glass that Anna looks through.
Through and outside. 89.27 sets μέσα από against απέξω (apéxo), "round the outside". The verb is the same, περνάμε, and the choice of phrase says whether the route goes into the village or round it.
The pairs with πριν. 89.29 gathers up the last lesson: σταμάτα λίγο πριν περάσουμε μέσα από το φαράγγι. The verb after πριν is the aorist subjunctive, περάσουμε, with no θα, and λίγο πριν is "shortly before". The same pattern is in 89.11: πριν φτάσουμε στο χωριό.
The future and the subjunctive. 89.16 and 89.26 use θα περάσουμε for the future, while 89.18 uses ας περάσουμε, "let us go". The same aorist subjunctive form περάσουμε follows θα in the first and ας in the second.
Time and quantity. In 89.24 πόση ώρα θέλει is "how long does it take", and in 89.25 μία ώρα is "an hour", the accusative of duration. The word θέλει means "wants" and also "takes" (time).
Idioms and vocabulary. Δεν πειράζει (89.20) is "never mind, it does not matter". Μου αρέσει να οδηγώ is "I like to drive", with the person in the genitive form μου and the verb αρέσει in the third person. Η εθνική οδός (89.17) is the main national road. Το παρμπρίζ (89.28) is the windscreen, a word borrowed from French pare-brise and written as it sounds.
Greek punctuation. The guillemets « » mark speech, and the Greek question mark ; ends the questions 89.16, 89.24 and 89.26. When a statement is followed by the speech verb, a comma stands after the closing guillemet (89.17, 89.18). The exclamation mark in 89.28 is the same as in English.

μέσα (mésa): /ˈmesa/. Stress on the first syllable. The σ between two vowels is /s/, as in English "sit", and not /z/. από (apó): /aˈpo/. Stress on the last syllable. The phrase has two stresses: ME-sa a-PO. The π is unaspirated, with no puff of air, unlike English "p".
- μέσω (méso): /ˈmeso/. Identical in sound to μέσο (méso), "a means": ω and ο are the same sound. - διαμέσου (diamésou): /ðiaˈmesu/. Stress on the second syllable from the end. - σήραγγα (síranga): /ˈsiraŋɡa/. The γγ is /ŋɡ/, as in English "finger". Before ι, as in φαράγγι (farángi), the sound moves forward in the mouth. - κοιτάζω (kitázo): /ciˈtazo/. The κ before ι is made further forward in the mouth than English "k", close to "ky". - ομίχλη (omíchli): /oˈmixli/. The χ is /x/ before a consonant, like the "ch" of Scottish "loch". - παντζούρια (pantzoúria): /panˈdzurja/. The τζ is /dz/, like the "ds" of "kids". - ακούγεται (akoúyete): /aˈkuʝete/. The γ before ε is /ʝ/, like English "y". - ελάφι (eláfi): /eˈlafi/. - παρμπρίζ (parbríz): /parˈbriz/. The μπ in the middle of a word is closer to /mb/ or /b/. - σβήνει (svíni): /ˈzvini/. The σ before the voiced β is pronounced /z/.
- ι, η, υ, ει, οι all sound /i/. In this lesson: πόλη, δυσκολίες, μπαίνει, τοίχο, κοιτάζω. - αι is /e/: φαίνεται (FE-ne-te), μπαίνει (BE-nee), μαθαίνω (ma-THE-no). - ου is /u/: ακούω, τραγούδια, ομιλούνε. - θ is /θ/, as in English "thin" (παράθυρο); δ is /ð/, as in English "this" (δρόμος, δάσος, δέντρα). - β is /v/ (βουνά, βλέπω, σβήνει); φ is /f/ (φως, φύλλα). - γ before e or i is /ʝ/, like English "y" (βγαίνει, ακούγεται); before a consonant or a back vowel it is /ɣ/ (τραγούδια, οδηγώ). - λλ and σσ are one sound, not two (φύλλα, πολλές). - The stress is always marked on words of two or more syllables. A word of one syllable, such as φως, και, που, is not marked.
- μέσα (inside) and μέσα (means, as in τα μέσα) are the same word in spelling and sound. The article τα marks the noun. - μέσω (via) and μέσο (a means) sound the same. The spelling and the case that follows decide. - από (from) and απ' (the same word before a vowel, as in απ' έξω) sound the same, apart from the dropped vowel.
