← P.Herc: The Epicurean School
Papyrus: PHerc. 1389 Author: Polyaenus of Lampsacus (fl. 300-270 BCE) Work: Περὶ Ὅρων (On Definitions) Date: ~290 BCE composition Preservation: ~18% readable Current Location: Biblioteca Nazionale, Naples Imaging: 2018 RTI (Reflectance Transformation Imaging)
Polyaenus was Epicurus’s mathematical student who applied geometric precision to language. This text attempts to create an atomic dictionary - every term defined by direct reference to sensible reality. No abstractions without concrete foundation.
Found near logical works. The margins show ancient readers struggling with the ruthless precision.
Translation: “Justice is not something in itself, but a token of neither harming nor being harmed in mutual associations. Where no agreements, neither just nor unjust...
One saying ‘justice is written in heaven’ speaks emptily: show me the letters or be silent. Every definition must be shown in sensation or not be a definition but noise...”
Translation: “...incorporeal names create error. What is ‘the beautiful’? Show it. What ‘the good’? Touch it. If you cannot, don’t define it as being.
The Platonists fashion a world from names like children cities from sand. But sand exists - where are the Forms?...”
Translation: “Method of definition: a) Take the phenomenon b) Find the common in all c) Discard the excessive d) Define through sensibles only
Thus: ‘friend’ = ‘one who shares pain and joy’ Not ‘the other soul’ (Aristotle) Not ‘another self’ (Zeno) But VISIBLE ACTIONS...”

By Column IV: “ἀλλὰ πῶς περὶ θεῶν;” [But what about gods?] Response: “ὁρῶμεν τὰ εἴδωλα” [We see the images]
By Column VIII: “νοῦς οὐκ αἰσθητός!” [Mind not sensible!] Response: “ἀλλ’ ἔργα νοῦ αἰσθητά” [But mind’s works sensible]
Angry note: “οὗτος ἀναιρεῖ φιλοσοφίαν!” [This man destroys philosophy!]

Polyaenus demanded atomic precision We have 18% of his definitions Speaking vaguely about everything While exact language waits
The dictionary of reality Lies under thirty feet 82% illegible While we drown in abstractions
