Δημήτριος Περὶ Γεωμετρίας Β’ | Lost Theorems in Carbonized Diagrams

Where Epicurean Atomism Meets Mathematical Space

MANUSCRIPT DATA

Papyrus: PHerc. 1050 Author: Demetrius Laco (fl. 2nd century BCE) Work: Περὶ Γεωμετρίας, Book II Date: ~140 BCE Preservation: ~14% readable (diagrams partially visible!) Current Location: Biblioteca Nazionale, Naples Imaging: 2023 RTI revealed hidden diagrams

DISCOVERY CONTEXT

Demetrius attempts to reconcile Epicurean atomism with geometry. Problem: if everything is atoms and void, how can perfect circles exist? His solution revolutionizes both atomism and mathematics.

DIAGRAMS SURVIVE! Carbonized geometric proofs partially visible!

THE SURVIVING TEXT

Column V: The Atomic Circle Problem

[DIAGRAM PARTIALLY VISIBLE] ···•••··· ·· ·· · · · · · ·

Translation: “The circle appears smooth, but being from atoms cannot be precisely smooth. Solution: the conceived circle perfect, the sensible nearest to perfect.

[Atomic circle diagram showing discrete points]

The more atoms, the nearer to the perfect circle, to infinity...”

Column IX: The Pythagorean Theorem Atomically

Greek with proof sketch:...]τὸ Πυθαγόρειον ἐν ἀτόμοις οὕτως·

[DIAGRAM FRAGMENTARY] □ + □ = □ │ │ │ α² β² γ²

Translation: “...the Pythagorean in atoms thus:

[Fragmentary diagram of squares]

Not lines but atoms arranged squarely. Number of atoms in α² plus number in β² equals number in γ²...

Proof through atoms, not through incorporeals...”

Column XIV: The Infinite Division Paradox

Translation: “Zeno asks: if atoms, how infinite cutting? I answer: cutting conceptual only, not physical. Mind cuts to infinity, nature stops at atoms.

Double geometry: -

Conceptual: infinite division possible -

Physical: atoms ultimate

Proofs in conceptual, things in physical. They don’t fight but harmonize...”

RECONSTRUCTED SECTIONS

[The Complete Atomic Geometry]

Based on systematic approach:[RECONSTRUCTED from patterns]

[ATOMIC ELEMENTS:

a) Point = one atom b) Line = atoms in series c) Plane = atoms in width d) Solid = atoms in depth

Theorems: - Every line has definite number - Every figure from countable atoms - Precision in multitude of atoms]
