← P.Herc: The Epicurean School
Papyrus: PHerc. 1677 Author: Colotes of Lampsacus (fl. 310-270 BCE) Work: Πρὸς τὸν Λύσιν Πλάτωνος Date: ~280 BCE Preservation: ~19% readable Current Location: Biblioteca Nazionale, Naples Imaging: 2022 infrared hyperspectral
Colotes, Epicurus’s attack dog, systematically destroyed Plato’s dialogues. Here he demolishes the Lysis - Plato’s dialogue on friendship. Revolutionary: shows friendship needs bodies, not Forms.
Margins show ancient Platonist’s RAGE - this text was battlefield.
Translation: “Plato says friendship of like to like or opposite to opposite, but these are word-games. Friendship happens from bodies to bodies through pleasure.
If souls incorporeal, how do they touch? How perceive? How rejoice in presence? One saying friendship without body says music without sound...”
Translation: “...in the Lysis he asks if friendship for utility or for itself. But what’s the problem? All friendship useful and beautiful. Those dividing like cutting living animal into dead parts.
Friend benefits and being benefited we enjoy. Pleasure and utility don’t fight but grow together. Plato makes problems from nothing...”
Translation: “True friendship happens thus: -
Bodies meet -
Exchange of images -
Pleasure from presence -
Memory in absence -
Mutual benefit -
Co-increase of tranquility
Not Forms nor participations but atoms sympathizing. The friend another body providing us pleasure...”
Based on Epicurean systematics:[RECONSTRUCTED from pattern]
[THE ERRORS OF THE LYSIS:
a) Incorporeal friendship = impossible b) Self-sufficient friendship = empty c) Divine friendship = fantasy d) Eternal friendship = false
Friendship mortal as bodies, but memory extends. Not divine but human, and therefore precious.]

Platonist’s fury: “ψυχὴ ἀθάνατος! [Soul immortal! Body tomb!]
Epicurean response: “ἂν ψυχὴ ἄνευ σώματος, πῶς φιλεῖ;” [If soul without body, how loves?]
Different hand: “Colotes barbarus animam negat” [Colotes barbarian denies soul]
