CSV entry 26 is at, the preposition of a point in space or time: at home, at the doctor's, at the station, at five o'clock. Serbian has no single word that does all of this. It shares the work out among several prepositions and cases, and the one that comes closest to the heart of English at is код. Код куће сам: I'm at home. Била сам код зубара: I was at the dentist's. Чекам те код моста: I'll wait for you by the bridge.
Код always takes the genitive (Lesson 5). It has three meanings. With a person, it means at someone's place or with someone, like French chez: код баке, at Grandma's; код мене, at my place. With a place or a thing, it means at, by, near: код поште, by the post office. With a group or a person taken as a case, it means among, with, in the case of: код Срба, among Serbs; код њега, with him (as he is).
Where English uses at for being inside a building or at an event, Serbian uses the prepositions you already know: у + locative (у школи, at school; Lesson 7) and на + locative (на послу, at work; на станици, at the station; Lesson 18). For clock time it uses у + accusative: у пет, at five. Section D sets out the whole map.
Key Takeaways
- код + genitive: at someone's place, at, by, near a place, among, with - код куће is at home; кући (no preposition) is home, the direction: идем кући - After код, pronouns take their full genitive forms: код мене, код тебе, код њега, код ње, код нас, код вас, код њих - Идем код лекара (I'm going to the doctor's) is accepted Serbian beside the older идем лекару - Inside a building or institution: у + locative (у школи); at a workplace, open place or event: на + locative (на послу, на станици, на концерту) - Clock time: у + accusative: у пет, у подне, у колико сати? - At the table is за столом; at night is ноћу - Look at, laugh at and angry at have no код: гледати некога, смејати се некоме, љут на некога

These are the rules for код, and for the other ways Serbian says at.
1. Код takes the genitive. Код is one of the prepositions that take only the genitive, like из, до and без. Its basic meaning is position: where someone or something is.
код куће (house: кућа) · код моста (bridge: мост) · код баке (grandma: бака) · код деде (grandpa: деда) · код станице (station: станица) · код пријатеља (friend: пријатељ) · код Срба (Serbs: Срби)
2. Three meanings.
At someone's place, with someone, like French chez: Деца су код баке (26.6). Марко је код пријатеља (26.11). The noun is a person, but the meaning is the person's home, office or shop: код зубара is at the dentist's, код фризера at the hairdresser's.
At, by, near a place or an object: код моста (26.4), код поште (26.7), код станице (26.12). Код marks a point. Beside it, поред means beside, alongside and близу means near, not far from; both also take the genitive.
Among, with, in the case of: код Срба (26.9) is among Serbs, in Serbian custom. Код њега никад не знаш (26.13) is with him you never know. Шта има ново код тебе? (26.10) asks about your life, not about your flat.
3. Pronouns after код. After any preposition, a personal pronoun takes its full form, never the clitic (Lesson 8):
код мене, код тебе, код њега, код ње, код нас, код вас, код њих (kod mene, kod tebe, kod njega, kod nje, kod nas, kod vas, kod njih)
Код мене can also mean on me, in my possession: Код мене су карте is I've got the tickets (26.30).
4. At home and home: код куће and кући. Serbian keeps rest and motion apart.
Код куће сам. — I'm at home. (rest: код + genitive) Идем кући. — I'm going home. (motion: dative, no preposition)
The dative кући marks direction, not position. Кући сам for I'm at home is heard in everyday speech, but the standard form is код куће сам (or у кући сам, I'm in the house).
5. Код with verbs of motion. Traditionally the person you go to is in the dative: идем лекару, I'm going to the doctor('s). But идем код лекара (26.8) has become so common that the norm has long accepted it. Both are correct in Serbian today; код + genitive is the more usual one in speech.
6. The other ways to say at. Most English at phrases do not use код.
Inside a building or institution: у + locative (Lesson 7). у школи (at school), у биоскопу (at the cinema), у продавници (at the shop).
At a workplace, an open place, an event: на + locative (Lesson 18). на послу (at work), на станици (at the station), на концерту (at a concert), на рођендану (at a birthday party, 26.11), на вратима (at the door, Lesson 25), на углу (at the corner, 26.29).
Clock time: у + accusative. у пет or у пет сати (at five o'clock), у девет (26.8), у подне (at noon), у поноћ (at midnight). At what time? is У колико сати?
At a table or a desk, sitting: за + instrumental. за столом (at the table), за компјутером (at the computer).
Parts of the day without a preposition: ноћу (at night), викендом (at weekends).
7. Verbs and adjectives with at. English at after a verb or adjective is not translated with код:
гледати некога — to look at someone (accusative, no preposition) смејати се некоме — to laugh at someone (dative) љут на некога — angry at someone (на + accusative) добар у нечему — good at something (у + locative)
8. Set phrases. одмах (at once), најзад (at last), бар or барем (at least), уопште (at all), у почетку (at first), на почетку and на крају (at the beginning, at the end).
Common Mistakes
The wrong case after код: код куће is right, код кућу and *код кући are not. Код takes the genitive only.
Кући for location: *кући сам. In careful Serbian say код куће сам; keep кући for motion: идем кући.
A clitic after код: код ме, код га. Say код мене, код њега.
Код for every at: код школе means by the school, outside it. For at school say у школи; for at work say на послу.
На or код with clock time: *на пет сати. Say у пет сати.
A preposition with look at: English I'm looking at you is гледам те, the accusative with no preposition.

Код нас (26.5) is one of the commonest phrases in Serbian conversation. It means at our place, but just as often in our country, where we come from. Код нас се то не ради: we don't do that here. Serbs abroad use it all the time for home, and а код вас?, and in your country?, is the question a foreign visitor will hear most often.
Код мене или код тебе? (26.2) is what friends say when they decide where to meet. Дођи код мене is a casual invitation: come round to mine.
Many Serbian kafanas and shops take their name from код: at the sign of, at so-and-so's. Belgrade's oldest surviving kafana, opposite the Orthodox Cathedral, was for a time called Код Саборне цркве, At the Cathedral. The church authorities objected to a tavern taking its name, and the owner hung out a sign with only a question mark, as a stopgap. The kafana is still called „?“.
An idiom with код куће: бити код своје куће, literally to be at one's own home, means to be in one's element, to know one's way about something.
Home, кућа, is at the centre of the proverbs in Section F, as it is at the centre of Serbian family life and of the слава (26.9, Lesson 18).

Two folk proverbs about home from Vuk Stefanović Karadžić's Српске народне пословице, as printed in the Prosveta edition of Vuk's works (Дела Вука Караџића, ed. Miroslav Pantić, Belgrade 1969, p. 256) and quoted by Stana Ristić and Ivana Lazić-Konjik in Дом у српском језику (Пројекат Растко, 2012). They are Ijekavian, like most of Vuk's material: свагђе is the Ekavian свугде, everywhere. The first proverb puts home at rest, код куће; the second puts it in motion, кући, which is Section D §4 in two lines.

F-B: Natural Text with Translation
Свагђе је добро, а код куће најбоље.
"It is good everywhere, but best at home."
Свуда је проћи, ал' је кући доћи.
"You may go everywhere, but you must come home."
F-C: Original Only
Свагђе је добро, а код куће најбоље.
Свуда је проћи, ал' је кући доћи.
F-D: Grammar and Vocabulary Notes
Свагђе је добро (F.1) — an impersonal sentence: the neuter добро with је and no subject, it is good, like хладно је (26.5). Свагђе is an older form of everywhere; Ekavian Serbian says свуда or свугде.
А код куће најбоље (F.1) — а sets the second half against the first (Lesson 23). The verb је is understood from the first half and left out. Најбоље is the superlative of добро: добро, боље, најбоље. Popular collections often print the fuller form Свагђе је добро, али код куће је најбоље; the meaning is the same.
Свуда је проћи (F.2) — је + infinitive, with no subject, is an old construction for what can or must be done: it is (possible) to pass everywhere. Проћи is to pass, to go through.
Ал' је кући доћи (F.2) — ал' is али with its last vowel dropped, as often in verse and proverbs. Кући is the dative of direction (Section D §4): home, not at home. You may go anywhere, but the road leads home. The two infinitives проћи and доћи rhyme, as испеци and реци did in Lesson 25.

Part D — Grammar Notes for the Dialogue
Marija and her brother Nenad, from Lesson 25, are meeting at the cinema, and Nenad is late. Almost every line places someone or something with код, and the other words for at fill the gaps.
Ненаде, где си? (26.16) — Ненаде is the vocative of Ненад, the form used to call someone. Код биоскопа is at the cinema, outside it: Marija is waiting at the front. Inside, it would be у биоскопу.
Мама је била код мене (26.17) — код + a person: at my place. Тек with the past is only just: тек је отишла, she's only just left.
Филм почиње у осам (26.18) — clock time with у + accusative (Section D §6). Чекам те is present tense for the near future, as in 26.4.
Код које благајне? (26.19) — the question word agrees with the noun: које is genitive feminine to match благајне. Тамо их има три is there are three of them there: има with the genitive of what exists, as in има ручка за све (Lesson 25).
Код оне поред улаза, испод великог плаката (26.20) — three prepositions with the genitive in one line: код, поред (beside) and испод (under). The noun благајне is left out after оне: (at) that one.
Да одемо код тебе? (26.21) — да + present as a suggestion: shall we go? Код with a verb of motion, as in 26.8 (Section D §5).
Хајде да одемо код Јоване (26.22) — хајде да + present is let's. Јоване is the genitive of Јована.
Код родитеља у Новом Саду (26.23) — код gives the person's home, у + locative gives the city. Родитеља is the genitive plural of родитељ, the same in form as the genitive singular.
Код њих је бар тихо (26.25) — код њих is at their place: they are the people who run the café. Може да се прича is impersonal: one can talk.
Осам мање десет (26.26) — eight minus ten, that is ten to eight. Пет до осам and десет до осам are also heard.
Ја частим (26.27) — частити is to treat, to stand someone a drink: ја частим, it's on me. За десет минута is in ten minutes: за with an amount of time to come.
Код тебе је „десет минута“ пола сата (26.28) — код in its third meaning: with you, in your case.
Код семафора на углу (26.29) — код for a point (the traffic lights), на + locative for on the corner. Ево ме is here I am: ево with the accusative clitic.
Код мене су карте (26.30) — код мене as on me, in my hands (Section D §3). Кокице (popcorn) is plural in Serbian, so the verb is су.
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
код (kod): kod, with a short о [kod]. The д stays a д at the end of the word: Serbian does not devoice final consonants as Russian and German do. Код has no stress of its own; it leans on the next word and is said with it as one unit: код куће, код мене.
куће (kuće): KOO-che. Ћ is the soft ch [tɕ] of рећи (Lesson 25). Compare кући (KOO-chee), home: the endings -е and -и are the whole difference between at home and home.
свагђе (svagđe): SVAG-je. Ђ is the soft j [dʑ], the voiced partner of ћ, as in рођендан.
благајна (blagajna): BLA-gai-na. Ај is like English eye. Likewise хајде (HAI-de) and најбоље (NAI-bo-lye).
биоскоп (bioskop): BEE-o-skop. The vowels и and о stay separate.
пешке (peške): PESH-ke.
њега, њих (njega, njih): NYE-ga, nyeeh. Њ is one sound, the ny of canyon [ɲ], not n followed by y.
гужва (gužva): GOOZH-va. Ж as the s in measure.
частим (častim): CHAS-teem. Ч is the hard ch [tʃ] of church, unlike the soft ћ of куће.
