Lesson 14 Tamil: A Latinum Institute Modern Language Course

-க்காக (-kkāka) - For

Introduction

What does "for" mean in Tamil, in "a gift for you", "she works for her family" and "I came for the exam"?

English "for" does many jobs. It names the one who benefits: "a gift for you". It gives a purpose: "a room for studying". It gives a reason: "sorry for the delay". It gives a price: "I bought it for fifty rupees". It gives a length of time: "for three days". And it follows certain verbs: "wait for", "look for", "ask for". Tamil has no little word "for" that stands in front of a noun. Like all the "to", "of" and "in" words you have met, it is an ending, placed after the noun, and Tamil divides the work of English "for" among several of them. The vocabulary list gives the word as a preposition, "purpose/benefit, indicates reason". This lesson teaches the ending that best matches that description: -க்காக (-kkāka), said "-kkaa-ga", "for the sake of, on behalf of, for the purpose of".

-க்காக is built from two parts you know already. The first is the dative ending -க்கு (-kku), which you met in Lesson 11 in எனக்கு (eṉakku), "to me", and in Lesson 12 in மதுரைக்கு (maturaikku), "to Madurai". The second is ஆக (āka), the adverb form of the verb ஆ (ā), "to become, to be", which you met in Lesson 13 in நேராகப் (nērākap), "straight". The ending -உ of the dative is lost before the vowel ஆ, so that -க்கு + ஆக becomes -க்காக. A word with this ending means, literally, "being to X", that is, "for X":

- எனக்காக (eṉakkāka) — "for me" - உனக்காக (uṉakkāka) — "for you" (one person, informal) - உங்களுக்காக (uṅkaḷukkāka) — "for you" (polite, or more than one) - அவனுக்காக (avaṉukkāka) — "for him" - அவளுக்காக (avaḷukkāka) — "for her" - அவருக்காக (avarukkāka) — "for him or her, with respect" - எங்களுக்காக (eṅkaḷukkāka) — "for us (not including you)" - நமக்காக (namakkāka) — "for us (including you)" - அதற்காக (ataṟkāka) — "for it, for that" - எதற்காக (etaṟkāka) — "for what? why?" - யாருக்காக (yārukkāka) — "for whom?"

-க்காக is not the only "for". The plain dative -க்கு also means "for", when the thing is simply given to someone, or measured against someone or something. இது உனக்கு (itu uṉakku) is "this is for you, this is yours". இது உனக்காக (itu uṉakkāka) is "this is for your sake, this was done with you in mind". The first is about whom a thing belongs to, and the second is about whom it is done for. The lesson shows both, and Section D tells them apart.

A note on the script. -க்காக is written joined to the noun, with no space: எனக்காக, never *எனக்கு ஆக. The first க் is doubled, and it is held in the voice for a moment, "e-NAK-kaa-ga". The second க falls between two vowels and is said as a soft g, "kaa-ga". The shape of the noun before it changes in the same way as before -க்கு: அம்மா becomes அம்மாவுக்காக (ammāvukkāka), மகன் becomes மகனுக்காக (makaṉukkāka), நாடு becomes நாட்டுக்காக (nāṭṭukkāka), and the word அது becomes அதற்காக (ataṟkāka). Section D gives the rules. After -க்காக, a following க, ச, த or ப is doubled, the same doubling as after நேராக in Lesson 13: எனக்காகக் காத்திருக்கிறாள் (eṉakkākak kāttirukkiṟāḷ), "she is waiting for me".

Tamil has no word for "for" in a number of places where English has one. After a verb of searching or asking, the thing sought stands in the accusative: புத்தகத்தைத் தேடுகிறேன் (puttakattait tēṭukiṟēṉ), "I am looking for a book". A length of time is a plain noun: ஐந்து நிமிடம் காத்திருங்கள் (aintu nimiṭam kāttiruṅkaḷ), "wait for five minutes". A price takes the dative: நூறு ரூபாய்க்கு (nūṟu rūpāykku), "for a hundred rupees".

Key Takeaways

- Tamil has no free-standing "for": it is an ending, placed after the noun. The one for "for the sake of, on behalf of, for the purpose of" is -க்காக (-kkāka): எனக்காக, உனக்காக, அம்மாவுக்காக - -க்காக is the dative -க்கு plus ஆக: the -உ is lost before ஆ. It is written joined to the noun - The noun takes the same form as before -க்கு: அம்மாவுக்காக, மகனுக்காக, நாட்டுக்காக, குழந்தைகளுக்காக. For அது, இது, எது the form is -ற்காக: அதற்காக, இதற்காக, எதற்காக - For a purpose with a verb, use the verbal noun plus -ற்காக: படிப்பதற்காக, "in order to study" (Lesson 12's infinitive படிக்க is the lighter alternative) - The plain dative -க்கு is also "for": இது உனக்கு "this is for you"; நான்கு பேருக்குப் போதும் "enough for four people"; உதவிக்கு நன்றி "thanks for the help"; நூறு ரூபாய்க்கு "for a hundred rupees" - No word for "for" is used with a length of time (ஐந்து நிமிடம் காத்திருங்கள்) or with "look for", "ask for" (புத்தகத்தைத் தேடுகிறேன்) - After -ஆக a following க, ச, த or ப is doubled: எனக்காகக் காத்திருக்கிறாள், குழந்தைகளுக்காகப் புதிய புத்தகங்கள், அதற்காகத்தான்

Section D: Grammar Explanation

These are the grammar rules for "for" in Tamil

1. What -க்காக is. -க்காக (-kkāka) is a postposition: it follows a noun, a pronoun or a verbal noun and means "for the sake of, on behalf of, for the purpose of". It is the dative -க்கு with ஆக added: எனக்கு "to me" becomes எனக்காக "for me", அம்மாவுக்கு "to Mother" becomes அம்மாவுக்காக "for Mother". In the glosses it is marked BEN, for "benefactive", the name grammarians give to this "for the sake of" case. It comes after the noun and before the verb, and it is always written joined to the noun: அவன் தன் மகனுக்காக வேலை செய்கிறான் (14.3).

2. The noun before -க்காக. The noun takes the shape that it takes before the dative -க்கு, and then -ஆக is added. The common cases:

- Pronouns have their own forms: எனக்காக (14.2), உனக்காக (14.1), அவனுக்காக, அவளுக்காக, அவருக்காக, எங்களுக்காக (14.27), உங்களுக்காக (14.26), நமக்காக, யாருக்காக (14.4) - Nouns ending in -இ, -ஐ or -ய் take -க்காக directly: குழந்தை "child" gives குழந்தைக்காக, பள்ளி gives பள்ளிக்காக, ரூபாய் gives ரூபாய்க்காக, உதவி "help" gives உதவிக்காக - A noun ending in long -ஆ takes வ் and -உக்காக: அம்மா gives அம்மாவுக்காக (14.16), அப்பா gives அப்பாவுக்காக - Nouns ending in -ன், -ள், -ர் take -உக்காக: மகன் gives மகனுக்காக (14.3), பேர் gives பேருக்காக, பிறர் gives பிறருக்காக (14.15), குழந்தைகள் gives குழந்தைகளுக்காக (14.9), அவர் gives அவருக்காக - Nouns ending in -டு or -று, of two syllables with a long first vowel, double it: நாடு gives நாட்டுக்காக (14.5), வீடு gives வீட்டுக்காக. Other nouns in -உ keep it: தேர்வு gives தேர்வுக்காக (14.6), பேருந்து gives பேருந்துக்காக (14.10) - Nouns ending in -ம் change it to -த்து: திருமணம் gives திருமணத்துக்காக (14.12), புத்தகம் gives புத்தகத்துக்காக. A more formal spelling is -த்திற்காக: திருமணத்திற்காக - The pronouns அது, இது, எது take the ending -ற்கு: அதற்கு, இதற்கு, எதற்கு, and so அதற்காக (14.14), இதற்காக, எதற்காக (14.13). In writing the form is never *அதுக்காக, though that is how it is said in everyday speech (Section E)

3. -க்கு and -க்காக. Both can be translated "for", and the difference is real. The dative -க்கு names the one to whom a thing is given or who it belongs to: இது உனக்கு "this is for you, this is yours". -க்காக names the one for whose sake something is done or for whose use it is meant, and it usually goes with a verb of doing: உனக்காக வாங்கினேன் "I bought it for you (with you in mind)". So the dative is used where the English "for" stands for "to", "to the benefit of" or "enough for":

- recipient or owner: இது உனக்கு (not in the examples), நாளை அம்மாவுக்குப் பிறந்தநாள் (14.16), "tomorrow is Mother's birthday" - enough for: நான்கு பேருக்குப் போதும் (14.8) - thanks for: உங்கள் உதவிக்கு நன்றி (14.7); in the same way, தாமதத்துக்கு மன்னிக்கவும் (tāmatattukku maṉṉikkavum), "sorry for the delay" - price: நூறு ரூபாய்க்குத் தருகிறேன் (14.26), "I will give it for a hundred rupees" - the one who likes: அம்மாவுக்குப் புடவை பிடிக்கும் (14.17), "Mother likes saris"

The formal word சார்பாக (cārpāka), "on behalf of", is used for a group or an office: அரசின் சார்பாக "on behalf of the government". It is not met in the examples. For a person, -க்காக is the ordinary word: எனக்காகவும் (14.30), "on my behalf too".

4. Purpose: a noun, or a verbal noun. With a noun, -க்காக gives the purpose of an action: தேர்வுக்காகப் படிக்கிறேன் "I study for the exam" (14.6), பேருந்துக்காகக் காத்திருந்தோம் (14.10). With a verb, English says "in order to" or "for -ing". Tamil makes the verb into a noun, the verbal noun in -அது (படிப்பது "studying", வாங்குவது "buying", வருவது "coming", கொடுப்பது "giving"), adds -ற்கு and then -ஆக: படிப்பதற்காக (14.11), "in order to study"; கொடுப்பதற்காக "in order to give". The verbal noun is the same -வது or -பது that you met in Lesson 13 in விளையாடுவதை (13.14). There is no simple rule for which verb takes -பது and which -வது: learn it with the verb. Lesson 12's infinitive says the same in a lighter way: படிக்க வந்தேன் and படிப்பதற்காக வந்தேன் both mean "I came to study". The form in -ற்காக puts the purpose in front and is a little more formal. The infinitive cannot take -க்காக: *படிக்கக்காக is wrong.

5. Asking "for what?" and answering. The question for a purpose is எதற்காக? (etaṟkāka), "for what, what for", and the answer is அதற்காக (ataṟkāka), "for that": எதற்காக இங்கே வந்தார் (14.13), அதற்காகத்தான் உங்களை அழைத்தோம் (14.14). The question "for whom?" is யாருக்காக? (14.4). The short spoken forms are எதற்கு? and அதற்கு, "what for? for that" (also எதுக்கு? and அதுக்கு in speech). Do not confuse எதற்காக with ஏன் (ēṉ), "why", which you met in Lesson 13 (13.8): ஏன் asks the cause of what happened, and எதற்காக asks the aim.

6. The doubling after -ஆக. The last part of -க்காக is the adverb ஆக, and an adverb in -ஆக doubles a following க, ச, த or ப, as நேராகப் போங்கள் does in 13.22. Here the doubling shows after the word: எனக்காகக் காத்திருக்கிறாள் (14.2), குழந்தைகளுக்காகப் புதிய (14.9), திருமணத்துக்காகப் பணம் (14.12), அதற்காகத்தான் (14.14), எதற்காகப் படிக்கிறார் (14.22), மகிழ்ச்சிக்காகத்தான் (14.23). Before a vowel or any other consonant nothing is added: நாட்டுக்காக உழைத்தார் (14.5), எதற்காக இங்கே (14.13). The ending -ஏ, "only", and -உம், "also", follow ஆக without doubling: பிறருக்காகவே (14.15), எனக்காகவும் (14.30). The question ending -ஆ also joins with a glide: மகிழ்ச்சிக்காகவா? (14.22).

7. "For" without a "for": duration and searching. A length of time is put as a bare noun: அரை மணி நேரம் காத்திருந்தோம் (14.10), ஒரு வருடம் சென்னையில் இருந்தேன் (14.11), ஐந்து நிமிடம் காத்திருங்கள் (14.28). Verbs that take "for" in English often take a plain object in Tamil: புத்தகத்தைத் தேடுகிறேன் "I am looking for a book", with the accusative, and தண்ணீர் கேட்டேன் "I asked for water", where the thing asked for has no ending at all. The verb காத்திரு "wait" is different: its "for" is -க்காக, "waiting for the sake of someone or something": எனக்காகக் காத்திருக்கிறாள் (14.2).

8. ஆக by itself. The adverb ஆக is also "as" or "for" when it follows a noun directly: முதல் முறையாக (mutal muṟaiyāka), "for the first time, as a first time"; எடுத்துக்காட்டாக (eṭuttukkāṭṭāka), "for example"; நிச்சயமாக (niccayamāka), "certainly", in 14.28.

9. Respect and the verb. The verb agrees with the one who acts, not with the one "for" whom: அம்மா எனக்காகக் காத்திருக்கிறாள் (14.2), but a shopkeeper who asks a customer about her mother says படிக்கிறார் (14.22), with the respectful ending. A child speaking of its own mother uses படிக்கிறாள் (14.23), as in Lesson 12.

Common Mistakes

- Keeping the dative -உ. எனக்குக்காக is wrong. The -உ of -க்கு is lost before ஆ: எனக்காக (14.2). And do not write the ending as a separate word: write உனக்காக (14.1), not உனக்கு காக. - The nominative before -க்காக. நான்க்காக, அவன்க்காக, *நீக்காக are not Tamil. The pronoun takes its dative form first: எனக்காக, அவனுக்காக, உனக்காக. - A wrong shape of the noun. அம்மாக்காக should be அம்மாவுக்காக (14.16). நாடுக்காக should be நாட்டுக்காக (14.5). *மகன்க்காக should be மகனுக்காக (14.3). - The infinitive before -க்காக. *படிக்கக்காக is wrong for "in order to study". Use the verbal noun: படிப்பதற்காக (14.11). - Forgetting the doubling after -ஆக. எனக்காக காத்திருக்கிறாள் should be எனக்காகக் காத்திருக்கிறாள் (14.2), and குழந்தைகளுக்காக புதிய should be குழந்தைகளுக்காகப் புதிய (14.9). - -க்காக for "enough for", "thanks for" and a price. *நான்கு பேருக்காகப் போதும் is wrong. Say நான்கு பேருக்குப் போதும் (14.8). Say உங்கள் உதவிக்கு நன்றி (14.7), the usual form for thanks, and நூறு ரூபாய்க்கு (14.26) for a price. - A postposition for "look for". English "I am looking for a book" is புத்தகத்தைத் தேடுகிறேன். Putting -க்காக there (*புத்தகத்துக்காகத் தேடுகிறேன்) would mean "I search for the sake of the book", which is not what is meant. - A "for" with duration. *அரை மணி நேரத்துக்காகக் காத்திருந்தோம் is not the plain way to say "we waited for half an hour". Say அரை மணி நேரம் காத்திருந்தோம் (14.10). - Spelling அதற்காக as *அதுக்காக in writing. The spoken forms அதுக்கு, அதுக்காக, எதுக்கு are common in speech and in dialogue in films, but the written form has -ற்: அதற்காக, எதற்காக.

Section E: Cultural Context

Frequency and Register

-க்காக is a common ending in Tamil, in writing and in speech. It is the natural way to say that something is done for a person: உனக்காக, உங்களுக்காக, "for you", are the usual way to dedicate a thing or an act to someone. In speech the ending of அதற்காக and எதற்காக is often shortened, so that people say அதுக்காக (atukkāka) and எதுக்கு (etukku). You will hear and read these in dialogue, but write the standard form.

Doing Things for Others

The couplet of Section F states in Tamil the idea that a person is known by what is done for others and not for oneself. The Tirukkuṟaḷ puts it in its chapter on love. A sentence such as தன் பிள்ளைகளுக்காக வாழ்கிறார்கள் (taṉ piḷḷaikaḷukkāka vāḻkiṟārkaḷ), "they live for their children", says the same thing in the everyday language, and 14.15, "all his life he lived only for others", is a way of praising a good person.

Birthdays and Gifts

The dialogue below is set the evening before a mother's birthday. The greeting is பிறந்தநாள் வாழ்த்துகள் (piṟantanāḷ vāḻttukaḷ), "birthday greetings", and the shopkeeper's request in 14.30, to pass his good wishes on to the mother, is a friendly courtesy. In the dialogue, a sari is the obvious gift for a mother, which is why Meena rules it out: a gift that is the same every year does not say that it was chosen for her.

Offering a Price

A shopkeeper may offer a price "for you", உங்களுக்காக, as a favour: that is the meaning of 14.26. The favour is a courtesy of the seller's, and the price itself takes the dative, நூறு ரூபாய்க்கு.

Section F: Literary Citation

The citation is couplet 72 of the Tirukkuṟaḷ (திருக்குறள்) of Tiruvaḷḷuvar, in chapter 8, அன்புடைமை (aṉpuṭaimai), "The Possession of Love", in the book of virtue, அறத்துப்பால் (aṟattuppāl). The Tirukkuṟaḷ is the collection of 1,330 couplets on virtue, wealth and love already cited in Lessons 10 to 13. The couplet sets two kinds of person against each other by the one word "for": the loveless are "for themselves", the loving are "for others". Classical Tamil does this with the plain dative, தமக்கு and பிறர்க்கு, where modern Tamil would add ஆக and say தங்களுக்காக and பிறருக்காக. The text follows the editions at thirukkural.net, thirukural.ai and ytamizh.com, which agree. In the printed text the sandhi joins தமக்கு and உரியர் into தமக்குரியர் (tamakkuriyar), by the same loss of -உ before a vowel that makes -க்கு + ஆக into -க்காக. F-A gives the words divided; F-B and F-C give the couplet as it is printed.

"The loveless are, in everything, for themselves; the loving, even to their bones, are for others."

— Tiruvaḷḷuvar, Tirukkuṟaḷ 72 (translation: Latinum Institute, kept close to the Tamil).

F-C: Original Script Only

அன்பிலார் எல்லாம் தமக்குரியர் அன்புடையார் என்பும் உரியர் பிறர்க்கு.

F-D: Grammar and Literary Commentary

The couplet says that people without love keep everything for themselves, and that people with love belong to others even in their bones. The modern commentary of Mu. Varadarasan, as given at ytamizh.com, reads it in the same sense: the loveless take everything as their own, and the loving share what they have with others. In modern Tamil the sense would be put with the ending of this lesson: This paraphrase is ours, not a quotation from a commentator.

Grammar notes:

- அன்பிலார் (aṉpilār): அன்பு "love" + இல் "lack" + ஆர் "those who", so "those who have no love". The ending -ஆர் makes a plural of people. - அன்புடையார் (aṉpuṭaiyār): அன்பு + உடை "possess" + ஆர், "those who have love". The two words are opposites, built the same way. - தமக்கு (tamakku): the dative of தாம் "themselves" (modern தங்களுக்கு). தமக்கு உரியர் is "they are for themselves". - உரியர் (uriyar): உரிய "belonging to, proper to" in its personal plural form, "those who belong". "To belong to X" is put with the dative, X-க்கு உரியர். The couplet has no verb "to be": the noun stands as the statement. - என்பும் (eṉpum): என்பு "bone" (the old word; modern எலும்பு) + -உம் "even". "Even their bones" is a way of saying "all of themselves". - பிறர்க்கு (piṟarkku): பிறர் "others" + -க்கு. After a final -ர் the old dative is -க்கு directly, as in பிறர்க்கு and தமக்கு. Modern Tamil inserts -உ-: பிறருக்கு (Section D §2). With ஆக it gives the பிறருக்காக of 14.15.

Part D: Grammar Notes for Genre Section

- -க்காக and a person (14.16, 14.20, 14.21, 14.26, 14.27, 14.30). அம்மாவுக்காக, எங்களுக்காக, உங்களுக்காக and எனக்காகவும் all say that something is done for the sake of a person. The noun அம்மா takes வ் before the ending: அம்மாவுக்காக. Karthik says எங்கள் அம்மா, "our mother" (14.21), and Meena says எங்களுக்காக, "for us" (14.27): both use the "we" that does not include the shopkeeper. - The dative for the person who has or likes (14.16, 14.17, 14.24). நாளை அம்மாவுக்குப் பிறந்தநாள் is word for word "tomorrow to Mother birthday", that is, "tomorrow is Mother's birthday". அம்மாவுக்குப் புடவை பிடிக்கும் is "to Mother a sari is-liked". Neither uses -க்காக, because nothing is done for the sake of Mother: the birthday and the liking belong to her. - Purpose with a noun and with a verb (14.22, 14.23, 14.29). மகிழ்ச்சிக்காக (makiḻcci "joy"), வேலைக்காக (vēlai "work") are purposes expressed by nouns. படிப்பதற்காக (14.29) is a purpose expressed by a verb: படிப்பது "reading" + -ற்காக. In 14.29 the purpose is Mother's: she will stay at home all day tomorrow in order to read the book. - எதற்காக and the alternative question (14.22). The shopkeeper asks எதற்காகப் படிக்கிறார்? "for what does she read?" and gives two answers, each with the question ending -ஆ: மகிழ்ச்சிக்காகவா, வேலைக்காகவா? The -ஆ comes after the glide வ of ஆக: ஆக + ஆ gives ஆகவா. Meena answers with மகிழ்ச்சிக்காகத்தான், "for pleasure only", with the same -தான் as in 13.18, here doubled after ஆக. - Respect on the verb (14.22, 14.23). The shopkeeper, a stranger, calls Meena's mother படிக்கிறார், with the respectful ending; Meena, speaking of her own mother, says படிக்கிறாள். - A price with the dative (14.26). நூறு ரூபாய்க்குத் தருகிறேன் is "I give it for a hundred rupees": ரூபாய் + க்கு. The same sentence has உங்களுக்காக, "for your sake, as a favour to you", at the beginning. So one sentence has both "fors": the favour with -க்காக, the price with -க்கு. The reason is joined by அதனால் (Lessons 12 and 13): "you are buying for Mother, so ...". - Doubling (14.16, 14.20, 14.22, 14.23, 14.27). அம்மாவுக்குப் பிறந்தநாள் (ப after the dative -க்கு), எந்தப் புத்தகம் (ப after the -த of எந்த, as in Lesson 13), எதற்காகப் படிக்கிறார் (ப after ஆக), மகிழ்ச்சிக்காகத்தான் (த after ஆக), இதைப் பரிசுக் காகிதத்தில் (ப after the accusative -ஐ, and க after பரிசு in the compound "gift-paper"), சுற்றித் தர (த after the -இ participle). - A length of time and "certainly" (14.28). ஐந்து நிமிடம் காத்திருங்கள் is "wait five minutes" with no word for "for". நிச்சயமாக is நிச்சயம் "certain" + ஆக, "as certain, certainly", the ஆக of the lesson by itself (Section D §8). காத்திருங்கள் is the polite imperative, as in Lesson 13. - "Please" with the imperative (14.30). சொல்லுங்கள் is the polite imperative of சொல், and வாழ்த்துச் சொல்லுங்கள் is "say a greeting". The doubled ச் is the doubling after வாழ்த்து.

Pronunciation Guide

-க்காக (-kkāka), எனக்காக (eṉakkāka), அதற்காக (ataṟkāka)

- IPA: /kːaːɡɐ/, /enɐkːaːɡɐ/, /ɐd̪ɐrkaːɡɐ/ - The first க் of -க்காக is a doubled k: the sound is held for a moment, as in English "bookcase", before the long vowel: "E-nak-kaa-ga". It is not aspirated. - The ஆ in the middle is a long, open aa, held about twice as long as the short அ: "kaa", not "ka". - The second க falls between two vowels and is voiced, a soft g: "kaa-ga". It is never "kaa-ka". Compare the same letter at the start of a word, க, which is a plain k. - ற்க in அதற்காக and எதற்காக is a tapped r followed by k: "A-dhar-kaa-ga", "E-dhar-kaa-ga". The k stays unvoiced after ற்.

அம்மாவுக்காக (ammāvukkāka), மகனுக்காக (makaṉukkāka), பேருக்குப் (pērukkup)

- ம்ம in அம்மா is a long, held m: "AM-maa". க்க in -உக்காக is held in the same way: "vuk-kaa-ga". - ன in மகனுக்காக is the alveolar n, with the tongue tip on the ridge behind the upper teeth: "MA-ga-nuk-kaa-ga". The க in மகன் between vowels is a soft g. - ஏ in பேரு- is a long, pure vowel, "PAY-ruk-kup", with no second vowel.

மகிழ்ச்சிக்காக (makiḻccikkāka), உழைத்தார் (uḻaittār), வாழ்ந்தார் (vāḻntār)

- ழ் in மகிழ்ச்சி is the retroflex approximant, with the tongue tip curled back and the sound made without a stop, as in Lesson 12. It is followed here by ச்ச, a held "ch": "MA-gizh-chik-kaa-ga". - த்த in உழைத்தார் is a held dental th, "U-zhaith-thaar". ழ்ந்த in வாழ்ந்தார் is ழ் followed by a nasal and a dental d: "VAAZHN-dhaar". - ஐ in உழைத்தார், தங்கையின், கடைக்காரர் is as in Lesson 13: the vowel of "eye", shorter.

தேர்வுக்காக (tērvukkāka), பேருந்துக்காக (pēruntukkāka), படிப்பதற்காக (paṭippataṟkāka)

- ர்வ in தேர்வு is a tapped r followed by v: "TAYR-vuk-kaa-ga". ந்த in பேருந்து is a nasal followed by a voiced dental d: "PAY-run-dhuk-kaa-ga". - ப்ப in படிப்பது is a held, unvoiced p: "pa-DIP-pa-dhu".
