Lesson 7 Thai: A Latinum Institute Modern Language Course

ใน (nai) - In

Introduction

What does "in" mean in Thai?

The Thai word for "in" is ใน (nai). It means "in, inside, within", and it places one thing inside another: in the house, in the bottle, in the newspaper, in the heart. It comes before the noun, as English "in" does: ในบ้าน (nai bâan), "in the house"; ในน้ำ (nai náam), "in the water".

- แมวอยู่ในบ้าน (mɛɛw yùu nai bâan) — "The cat is in the house." - ในตู้เย็นไม่มีอะไรเลย (nai tûu-yen mâi mii à-rai ləəi) — "There is nothing at all in the fridge."

Thai has no verb "to be" for location in the English sense. To say where something is, Thai uses the verb อยู่ (yùu), "to be located, to stay", and ใน follows it: X อยู่ใน Y, "X is in Y". To say that something exists inside a place, Thai puts the place first and uses มี (mii), "there is, to have": ในตู้มีขนม (nai tûu mii khà-nǒm), "In the cupboard there are sweets". This second pattern, place first, is very old. Thailand's most famous inscription uses it, and Section F reads that passage.

English uses "in" in many places where Thai does not use ใน. Thai says "in" for space far more than for time. "In the morning" is ตอนเช้า (tɔɔn cháaw), with no ใน, "in five minutes" is อีกห้านาที (ìik hâa naa-thii), "five more minutes", and "in Thai" is ภาษาไทย (phaa-sǎa thai), with no preposition at all. Section D sets these out.

ใน is a native Tai word. It goes back to Proto-Tai, and its cognates are Lao ໃນ (nai) and Zhuang ndaw, "inside". In Thai it also serves as an adjective meaning "inner, internal", and it combines with other words: ข้างใน (khâang-nai), "inside" (literally "side-in"), ภายใน (phaai-nai), "within" (formal), and ในที่สุด (nai thîi-sùt), "in the end, finally".

A note on the script. ใน is written with two letters. The first, ใ, is the vowel ai called ไม้ม้วน (máai múan), "the rolled stroke". It is written before the consonant, though it is pronounced after it. The second is the consonant น (n). Thai has a second sign for the same sound, ไ, ไม้มลาย (máai má-laai). ไ is the ordinary one, used in thousands of words, while ใ is used in only twenty native words, and ใน is one of them. Thai children learn the twenty from a rhyme (Section E). The word is pronounced with a mid tone. น is a low-class consonant, the syllable ends in a vowel sound, and there is no tone mark, so the tone is mid.

Key Takeaways

- ใน (nai) = "in, inside, within"; it comes before its noun: ในบ้าน, "in the house" - To say where something is: X อยู่ใน Y (X yùu nai Y), "X is in Y" - To say what is inside a place: ใน Y มี X (nai Y mii X), "in Y there is X" - ข้างใน (khâang-nai) "inside"; ภายใน (phaai-nai) "within" (formal); ในที่สุด (nai thîi-sùt) "finally" - Not used for times of day or "in five minutes": ตอนเช้า "in the morning"; อีกห้านาที "in five minutes" - Spelt with ใ (ไม้ม้วน), not ไ; mid tone

Section D: Grammar Explanation

These are the grammar rules for ใน (nai)

1. Position. ใน is a preposition. It stands before its noun and never changes its form: ในบ้าน (nai bâan) "in the house", ในขวด (nai khùat) "in the bottle", ในใจ (nai jai) "in the heart". Thai nouns have no articles and no plural, so ในบ้าน can be "in the house", "in a house" or "in the houses" (7.1, 7.3).

2. Where something is: อยู่ใน. The verb อยู่ (yùu), "to be located", comes before ใน: - แมวอยู่ในบ้าน (7.1) — "The cat is in the house" - กุญแจอยู่ในกระเป๋าของฉัน (7.6) — "The key is in my bag" Do not put เป็น (pen), the "to be" of identity, in this place: ~~แมวเป็นในบ้าน~~ is wrong.

3. Where an action happens: verb + ใน. After any action verb, ใน + noun says where it takes place, with no อยู่: - เด็กเล่นในสวน (7.3) — "The children play in the garden" - พ่อทำงานในเมือง (7.7) — "Father works in the city"

4. What is inside: ใน … มี … . Thai likes to name the place first and then say what "there is" in it, using มี (mii): - ในตู้เย็นไม่มีอะไรเลย (7.9) — "In the fridge there is nothing at all" - ในน้ำมีปลา (Section F) — "In the water there are fish" มี can also come first: มีปลาในน้ำ (7.4), "There are fish in the water". Both orders are correct, and the first sounds more like a description or a story.

5. Place as topic. ใน + noun can open the sentence as its topic, and the description follows: ในห้องร้อนมาก (7.5), "In the room [it] is very hot". English needs the empty subject "it"; Thai needs none.

6. In and on, inside and under. Thai uses a separate word for each position: - ใน (nai) — in - บน (bon) — on - ใต้ (tâi) — under: ในกล่องไม้ใต้เตียง (7.14), "in a wooden box under the bed" - ข้างใน (khâang-nai) — inside (also as an adverb, at the end of a sentence: อยู่ข้างใน, "it's inside") - ข้างนอก (khâang-nɔ̂ɔk) — outside

7. Without ใน. Thai often goes straight from the verb to the place where English needs a preposition: - อยู่บ้าน (yùu bâan) — "to be at home"; อยู่ในบ้าน (yùu nai bâan) — "to be inside the house" (rather than out in the garden) - ไปโรงเรียน (pai roong-rian) — "to go to school"

8. Time. ใน is used with longer stretches of time: ในปีนี้ (7.12) "this year", ในปีที่แล้ว "last year". Thai also says simply ปีนี้ without ใน; ในปีนี้ is a little more careful or written. ใน is not used with: - parts of the day: ตอนเช้า (tɔɔn cháaw) "in the morning", ตอนเย็น (tɔɔn yen) "in the evening" - "in" + an amount of time from now: อีกห้านาที (ìik hâa naa-thii) "in five minutes". For "within five minutes" use ภายใน: ภายในห้านาที (phaai-nai hâa naa-thii).

9. Fixed expressions. - ในที่สุด (nai thîi-sùt) — "in the end, finally" (7.13); often followed by ก็ (gɔ̂ɔ) before the verb - ในใจ (nai jai) — "in one's heart, inwardly" (7.15) - ในขณะที่ (nai khà-nà thîi) — "while" - ใน as an adjective, "inner": ชั้นใน (chán-nai), "the inner layer, the inner zone"

10. Reduplication. The sign ๆ (mái yá-mók) repeats the word before it: เล็กๆ = เล็ก เล็ก (7.8), เก่าๆ = เก่า เก่า (7.14). With adjectives it softens or spreads the meaning: "smallish, little", "old (all of them)". A space usually follows ๆ when the sentence goes on (7.14).

Common Mistakes

- Writing ใน with ไ: ~~ไน~~. ใน is one of the twenty words spelt with ใ. - Confusing ใน with นัย (nai), "meaning, implication": the same sound with a different spelling. - Using ใน for "on": a book on the table is บนโต๊ะ (bon tó), not ~~ในโต๊ะ~~ (which would mean inside the table). - Using ใน for times of day: say ตอนเช้า, not ~~ในเช้า~~. - Translating "in five minutes" word for word: say อีกห้านาที. - Translating "in Thai": พูดภาษาไทย (phûut phaa-sǎa thai), "speak Thai", needs no preposition; "write it in Thai" is เขียนเป็นภาษาไทย (khǐan pen phaa-sǎa thai). - Adding เป็น before ใน: ~~เป็นในห้อง~~; use อยู่ในห้อง.

Section E: Cultural Context

Frequency and Register

ใน is one of the most frequent words in Thai, in speech and writing alike. In conversation ข้างใน (khâang-nai) is common for "inside". In official and written Thai, ภายใน (phaai-nai), "within, internal", appears everywhere: on signs, in news and in administration. เที่ยวบินภายในประเทศ (thîaw-bin phaai-nai prà-thêet) is a "domestic flight", literally a "flight within the country".

"In the Water There Are Fish, In the Fields There Is Rice"

Every Thai schoolchild knows the words ในน้ำมีปลา ในนามีข้าว (nai náam mii plaa, nai naa mii khâaw), "In the water there are fish, in the fields there is rice". They come from the inscription of King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai, which Section F reads. The phrase is used today as a saying for a land of plenty, a place where people want for nothing. It is built on the ใน … มี pattern of this lesson (Section D, rule 4).

The Twenty Words with ใ

Thai spells the sound ai in two ways, ไ and ใ. Only twenty native words take ใ, and schools teach them with a rhyme, ผู้ใหญ่หาผ้าใหม่ (phûu-yài hǎa phâa mài), "The elder looks for new cloth". Its fourth couplet contains ใน, and also ใต้ "under", the word used in 7.14:

สิ่งใดอยู่ในตู้ มิใช่อยู่ใต้ตั่งเตียง

"Whatever is in the cupboard is not under the stool or bed."

The rhyme ends ยี่สิบม้วนจำจงดี, "remember well the twenty rolled ones". Learners who know the twenty can write every other ai with ไ.

ใน in Set Phrases

- ในใจ (nai jai) — "in the heart, inwardly": คิดในใจ (khít nai jai), "to think to oneself" - ในที่สุด (nai thîi-sùt) — "finally, in the end" - ในหลวง (nai lǔang) — the familiar and respectful way Thais refer to the King in everyday speech - ข้างใน / ข้างนอก — "inside" / "outside", the everyday pair

F-C: Original Script Only

เมื่อชั่วพ่อขุนรามคำแหง เมืองสุโขทัยนี้ดี ในน้ำมีปลา ในนามีข้าว เจ้าเมืองบ่เอาจกอบในไพร่ลูท่าง

F-D: Grammar and Literary Commentary

The passage uses ใน three times, in two senses.

ในน้ำมีปลา ในนามีข้าว. These are two short clauses of the same shape, ใน + place + มี + thing: "in the water there are fish, in the fields there is rice". The place comes first as the topic, as in 7.9 and Section D, rule 4. The two clauses are matched word for word, น้ำ against นา and ปลา against ข้าว, and the sounds are matched too: náam and naa, plaa and khâaw. This balance is why the phrase is remembered and why it became a saying.

จกอบในไพร่ลูท่าง. Here ใน is used of the people a toll is taken from: "a toll in (= among, from) the commoners on the roads". The same use survives in modern Thai, where ใน can mean "among" or "out of": หนึ่งในสิบ (nɯ̀ng nai sìp), "one in ten, one out of ten". จกอบ (jà-gɔ̀ɔp) is a transit toll on goods and animals taken to market. It is a loan from Old Khmer, one of several Khmer words in the inscription. บ่ (bɔ̀ɔ) is the old negative "not". Standard Thai has replaced it with ไม่ (mâi), but it lives on in Lao and the north-eastern and northern dialects. ลูท่าง is the inscription's spelling; it is commonly read as ลู่ทาง (lûu-thaang), "road, route", and romanized here in that reading.

เมือง (mɯang) is a city with its surrounding lands, the basic political unit of the Tai world. พ่อขุน (phɔ̂ɔ-khǔn), literally "father-lord", is the title of the early Sukhothai kings.

The text is that of the stone as transcribed into modern Thai letters. The original is in the Sukhothai script, which writes vowels on the line beside the consonants. Its date and authenticity have been argued over by scholars since the late 1980s, but it remains the founding document of Thai writing. The sentence after this passage, about trading cattle and horses freely, has variant readings in the transcriptions consulted, so it is not quoted here.

Part D: Grammar Notes for Genre Section

The dialogue is a search through a house, so nearly every line names a place with ใน: ในห้องนอน, ในกระเป๋าเสื้อ, ในครัว, ในลิ้นชัก, ในรถ, ในห้องนั่งเล่น, ในสวน, ในกระจก. Three patterns from Section D recur:

- Verb + ใน + place for where an action happens: ยายหาในห้องนอน (7.16), "I searched in the bedroom"; ยายดูในลิ้นชัก (7.20), "I looked in the drawers". - อยู่ใน + place for where a thing is: ไม่อยู่ในครัว (7.20), "they're not in the kitchen"; หรือว่าอยู่ในสวน (7.25), "or are they in the garden?". The subject, "the glasses", is left out because both speakers know it. Thai drops a subject that is clear from context. - ใน + place + มี for what is inside: ในกระเป๋าเสื้อมีแต่ผ้าเช็ดหน้า (7.18), "in the pocket there's only a handkerchief"; ในรถก็ไม่มี (7.22), "in the car there isn't [any] either".

The answer turns on the contrast in Section D, rule 6: the glasses were never ใน any room, they were บน Grandma's head (7.27). ในใจ (7.29), "in the heart, inwardly", takes ใน from the house to the feelings, as in 7.15.

Other points: - ล่ะ (lâ) after a noun asks "what about …?": ในครัวล่ะ (7.19), "what about in the kitchen?". - หรือยัง (rɯ̌ɯ yang), "or not yet?", asks whether something has happened yet (7.17). - ไม่ได้ + verb (7.27) denies a past fact: ไม่ได้อยู่ "they weren't (in fact) in". - ห้อง + verb makes room names: ห้องนอน "room-sleep" = bedroom, ห้องนั่งเล่น "room-sit-play" = living room, ห้องสมุด (7.11) "room-book" = library. - ตายจริง (taai jing), literally "die really", is an everyday cry of surprise, "good heavens!". It is used especially by older women and carries no thought of death.

Pronunciation Guide

ใน (nai)

- IPA: /naj˧/ — mid tone - น (n): as English n - ใ (ai): the diphthong in English eye or nice, but short. It is written first and pronounced after the consonant. - Tone: mid. Hold a level pitch in the middle of your voice and do not let it rise or fall. The rule: น is a low-class consonant; a syllable ending in a vowel or in m, n, ng, w or y is "live"; a live syllable of a low-class consonant with no tone mark has the mid tone.

Other ใ Words in This Lesson

All twenty ใ words have the same vowel. They differ in tone, which the consonant class and the tone mark decide: - ใจ (jai) "heart", mid: จ is mid-class, live syllable, no mark - ใต้ (tâi) "under", falling: ต is mid-class, with ไม้โท ้ - ใส่ (sài) "to put on, put in", low: ส is high-class, with ไม้เอก ่ - ให้ (hâi) "to give; for", falling: ห is high-class, with ไม้โท ้

Sounds That Need Care

- อยู่ (yùu) /jùː/, low tone: the silent อ in front of ย makes the syllable follow the mid-class rules, and with ่ the tone is low. Say a long oo on a low, level pitch. - บ้าน (bâan) and น้ำ (náam): falling and high. Do not let "house" and "water" sound alike. บ้าน falls from high to low; น้ำ is high and rises slightly at the end. - ห้อง (hɔ̂ɔng): the vowel is the open aw of British law, with a falling tone. It is spelt with the long vowel อ, but in everyday speech it is usually said short, /hɔ̂ŋ/. - ป (p) in ปลา (plaa) and ต (t) in ตู้เย็น (tûu-yen) are unaspirated, without the puff of air of English p and t. This is why the respellings write bp and dt. พ (ph) in พ่อ and ท (th) in ทุก are aspirated, like English p in pin and t in tin, and never like the f of phone or the th of thin. - เ-ือ in เมือง (mɯang) /mɯa̯ŋ˧/: start with the unrounded vowel ɯ (say oo with the lips spread, as if smiling), then glide to a.

Homophones

- ใน (nai) "in" and นัย (nai) "meaning, implication" sound exactly alike. Only the spelling and the context tell them apart. - ใน (nai) "in" and ไหน (nǎi) "where, which" (7.27) differ only in tone. ใน is mid; ไหน is rising, because the silent ห makes น follow the high-class rules.
