What does "you" mean in Thai?
Thai has no single word for "you". English says you to a child, a king and a stranger alike. In Thai the speaker chooses a word, and the choice says how old the listener is, how senior, and how close. The safe everyday word, the one a learner can use to almost anyone, is:
- คุณ (khun), "you", polite, for a man or a woman, an equal or a superior, a friend or a stranger
- คุณชื่ออะไร (khun chɯ̂ɯ à-rai) — "What is your name?" - คุณสบายดีไหม (khun sà-baai dii mǎi) — "How are you?"
Around คุณ stand other words. เธอ (thəə) is "you" to an equal or a younger person, among friends; it also means "she". ท่าน (thâan) is "you" to someone of high rank or great respect, in formal speech and writing. พี่ (phîi), "elder sibling", and น้อง (nɔ́ɔng), "younger sibling", are used for "you" with people a little older or younger than the speaker, and so are หนู (nǔu) for a child, ครู (khruu) for a teacher and หมอ (mɔ̌ɔ) for a doctor. แก (gɛɛ) is a familiar "you" between close friends. มึง (mɯng) and เอ็ง (eng) are the rough "you" of old Tai: between very close friends they show intimacy, and with anyone else they are an insult. Section F reads a line in which มึง still stands.
Very often Thai uses no word for "you" at all. If it is clear who is addressed, the pronoun is left out: ไปไหนมา (pai nǎi maa), "Where have you been?" And Thai speakers often say "you" with a name or a kinship word, so คุณนก (khun nók) is "Ms Nok" and also "you", when the listener is Nok.
The Thai pronoun does not change its form. คุณ means "you" and, after a noun, "your": ผมเห็นคุณ (phǒm hěn khun) "I see you", คุณเห็นผม (khun hěn phǒm) "you see me", บ้านคุณ (bâan khun) "your house". Section D sets this out.
คุณ is also a noun, "merit, worth, goodness", borrowed from Pali and Sanskrit guṇa, "quality, virtue". As a polite way of speaking to a person, it is in origin a way of crediting him or her with merit. The noun is still alive in ขอบคุณ (khɔ̀ɔp-khun), "to thank", and in คุณภาพ (khun-ná-phâap), "quality". And the same word is the title "Mr / Ms / Mrs" before a name: คุณชัย, คุณนก.
A note on the script. คุณ begins with ค, a low-class consonant, and carries the short vowel ุ (u) under it. It ends with ณ, a letter used in Sanskrit and Pali loans, which Thai pronounces simply as n. The syllable is live (it ends in n) and has no tone mark. A live syllable of a low-class consonant with no mark takes the mid tone: khun. Do not confuse it with ขุน (khǔn), "lord", as in พ่อขุน (Lesson 8, Section F): ข is high class and rises.
- คุณ (khun) = "you, your", polite, for either sex, to almost anyone - Before a name, คุณ is "Mr / Ms / Mrs": คุณนก; with a role it is respectful: คุณครู, คุณหมอ, คุณแม่ - The pronoun never changes: คุณ = you; บ้านคุณ = your house - Thai often leaves "you" out, or uses a name, a title or a kinship word (พี่, น้อง, หนู, ครู) instead - เธอ (thəə) friendly or to a younger person; ท่าน (thâan) very respectful; แก, มึง, เอ็ง familiar or rude - Questions with คุณ take ไหม (mǎi) or หรือเปล่า (rɯ̌ɯ-plàao) at the end, and ครับ or คะ after it - คุณ is also "merit" (ขอบคุณ, "thank you") and has the mid tone: low-class ค, live syllable, no mark

1. One form for you and your. Thai pronouns have no cases. The same word is the subject, the object and the possessor: - คุณเห็นผม (khun hěn phǒm) — "you see me" - ผมเห็นคุณ (phǒm hěn khun) — "I see you" (9.3, 9.10, 9.15) - บ้านคุณ (bâan khun) or บ้านของคุณ (bâan khɔ̌ɔng khun) — "your house" (9.4) The possessor follows the noun, with or without ของ (khɔ̌ɔng), "of", as with ผม in Lesson 8.
2. Choosing the word. The speaker chooses by the age and standing of the listener and by the occasion: - คุณ (khun) — the general polite "you", for either sex (9.1 to 9.15) - เธอ (thəə) — to a friend, an equal or a younger person; also "she" - ท่าน (thâan) — to someone of high rank or great respect, in formal speech and writing - พี่ (phîi), น้อง (nɔ́ɔng), หนู (nǔu) — a kinship word for "you", to someone a little older, a little younger, or a child - ครู (khruu), หมอ (mɔ̌ɔ) — the role as "you": a pupil says ครู to the teacher - แก (gɛɛ) — familiar, among close friends - มึง (mɯng), เอ็ง (eng) — intimate or rude; never use them with strangers
3. Yes-no questions. A question with คุณ keeps the order of a statement and ends with a question word: - ไหม (mǎi): คุณหิวไหม (9.5), "Are you hungry?" - หรือเปล่า (rɯ̌ɯ-plàao), "or not?": คุณเป็นคนไทยหรือเปล่า (9.6) - ได้ไหม (dâai mǎi), "can you?": คุณพูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ไหม (9.8) A polite question ends with ครับ (khráp) from a man and คะ (khá) from a woman (9.7, 9.8, 9.9). The particle depends on the sex of the speaker, never of the listener; a woman uses ค่ะ (khâ) in statements.
4. Word questions. The question word stays where the answer would stand: คุณชื่ออะไร (9.1), คุณมาจากไหน (9.7), คุณทำงานที่ไหน (9.9). อะไร (à-rai) is "what", ไหน (nǎi) is "which, where".
5. Answering without "I" or "you". The answer to คุณหิวไหม is simply หิว (hǐw), "[I am] hungry", or ไม่หิว (mâi hǐw), "[I am] not hungry". Thai repeats the verb and leaves out both pronouns. To say "you" back would sound heavy.
6. Leaving "you" out. If the listener is clear, the pronoun goes: ไปไหนมา (pai nǎi maa), "Where have you been?"; กินข้าวหรือยัง (gin khâaw rɯ̌ɯ-yang), "Have you eaten yet?" (a common greeting). Where the subject is a name or a title, it stands for "you": คุณนกทำงานอะไร (khun nók tham-ngaan à-rai), "What do you do, Nok?" (Lesson 8, 8.22).
7. คุณ + name, and คุณ + role. Before a given name คุณ is "Mr, Ms or Mrs": คุณชัย (9.16), คุณนก. Thai uses the first name with คุณ, not the surname. Before a role or a kinship word it makes the word respectful: คุณครู (khun-khruu), "teacher" (9.12), คุณหมอ (khun-mɔ̌ɔ), "doctor", คุณแม่ (khun-mɛ̂ɛ) and คุณพ่อ (khun-phɔ̂ɔ), someone's "mother" and "father" (9.28).
8. "You" in the plural. For "you all", Thai puts พวก (phûak), "group", before the pronoun: พวกคุณหิวไหม (phûak khun hǐw mǎi), "Are you all hungry?"
9. คุณ as a noun. The noun คุณ, "merit, kindness", is in ขอบคุณ (khɔ̀ɔp-khun), "to thank" (9.10, 9.17, 9.29, 9.30). In ขอบคุณคุณ (9.10) the word occurs twice, once as "kindness" and once as "you". ด้วยความขอบคุณ (dûai khwaam khɔ̀ɔp-khun), "with thanks", ends a letter (9.30).
- Calling an older or senior person คุณ without a name or role. Say the name (คุณลุง, "uncle"), the role (คุณครู) or the kinship word, or ท่าน for high rank. - Using เธอ to an older stranger or to a superior; it is for equals and juniors. - Using แก, มึง or เอ็ง with strangers, however much they are heard in films. - Putting คุณ into every clause. Leave it out where the meaning is clear (Rule 6). - Choosing the polite particle by the listener's sex: it follows the speaker (ครับ for a man, ค่ะ and คะ for a woman). - Spelling คุณ with น: ~~คุน~~. The final letter is ณ, kept from the Sanskrit and Pali spelling. - Adding a possessive ending. There is none: "your" is คุณ after the noun, or ของคุณ. - Confusing คุณ (khun, mid) with ขุน (khǔn, rising), "lord".

"You" is one of the commonest words in any language, but in Thai it is often silent. Conversation drops it whenever it can, and names, titles and kinship words stand in its place. Thais do not say "you" to a person they respect so much as name the person's place: "Teacher", "Auntie", "Elder Sister". คุณ is the word the learner can always fall back on, and it is correct for a stranger, a customer, a colleague and a guest.
Almost every Thai has a short nickname, the ชื่อเล่น (chɯ̂ɯ-lên), "play name", used from childhood: นก (Nok, "bird"), ฝน (Fon, "rain"). In daily life people use it, with คุณ before it for adults: คุณนก, คุณชัย. In Thai this is the usual way to address a person politely by name, and the surname is almost never used.
Thai society pays close attention to age and rank, and "you" follows them. A woman of thirty may call a shop assistant of twenty น้อง and her manager of fifty พี่ or คุณ. A learner who uses คุณ throughout will always be correct; the kinship words come with familiarity. For royalty and for monks Thai has its own vocabulary, ราชาศัพท์ (râat-chaa-sàp) and the monks' speech, with words for "you" that this course does not teach.
เธอ (thəə) is the "you" of friends and equals, and it also means "she". แก (gɛɛ) is the "you" of close friends. มึง (mɯng), "you", and its partner กู (guu), "I" (Lesson 8), come from the oldest layer of Tai and are common between close friends; to anyone else they are an insult.

From the Yuan Phai (ยวนพ่าย), a fifteenth-century Ayutthayan poem in the khlong dan metre, in praise of King Borommatrailokkanat and his war against the Yuan of Lan Na. The two half-lines below are quoted as the English Wiktionary entry for มึง gives them, in the old spelling, with its ellipsis between them. The verses between them are not given here. The poem was not checked against a printed edition, so the lines are quoted only for the pronoun that stands in them: มึง, "you".
F.1a มึง you คือ are วัล creeper เฝือ thicket แฝง lurking
F.1b mɯng (meung, mid) you-OLD khɯɯ (keu, mid) be-namely wan (wan, mid) creeper fɯ̌a (feu-a, rising) thicket fɛ̌ɛng (faeng, rising) hide-lurk
F.2a เคย ever กุํ seize พิรุธ fault มึง you หลาย many เทื่อ times
F.2b khəəi (kery, mid) ever-PAST gum (goom, mid) seize-OLD phí-rút (pi-root, high-high) fault-trace mɯng (meung, mid) you-OLD lǎai (lai, rising) many thɯ̂a (teu-a, falling) time-OLD
มึงคือวัลเฝือแฝง … เคยกุํพิรุธมึงหลายเทื่อ
"You are a creeping vine, hidden in the thicket … Many times I have caught traces of your fault."
มึงคือวัลเฝือแฝง … เคยกุํพิรุธมึงหลายเทื่อ
มึง. The second-person pronoun appears twice in these two half-lines, once as the subject of F.1 and once as the possessor of พิรุธ in F.2: พิรุธมึง, "your fault". Here too the pronoun has no case and no possessive ending (Section D, rule 1): the possessor follows the noun, as in บ้านคุณ. In the fifteenth century มึง was the plain pronoun of address, and its partner was กู. Today the pair is rough, and standard Thai says คุณ or เธอ.
คือ. คือ (khɯɯ) is "namely, that is", the equating word of a written sentence, "X is Y". Modern Thai uses เป็น (pen) with a noun of kind (9.6) and คือ for definitions.
เคย. เคย (khəəi) means "to have ever, to have been used to": เคยไป is "have been there". Here it marks an experience repeated "many times".
The spelling. กุํ and เทื่อ are old spellings. กุํ is read here as กุม (gum), "to seize, to catch", the sense that the translation requires. เทื่อ (thɯ̂a) is an old word for "time, occasion", like modern ครั้ง (9.29). พิรุธ (phí-rút), "a suspicious trace, a fault", is a Sanskrit loan that is still in use today.
What is not claimed. The surrounding verses were not consulted, so this lesson does not say who is speaking or to whom. The glosses of วัล, เฝือ and แฝง are tentative: the dictionary gives only "ivy" for the whole phrase. The point of the citation is the pronoun and its place in the line.

A letter to a neighbour is the situation in which "you" is hardest to avoid, and Nok uses it freely. Her note shows the roles of the word and what surrounds it:
- คุณ + name opens the letter: เรียนคุณชัย (9.16), "Dear Mr Chai". เรียน (rian) is the Thai "Dear" of a letter, and the name is the given name (Section D, rule 7). - คุณ as subject and as object: คุณว่าง (9.20), "you are free"; เชิญคุณ (9.19), "invite you"; รอคุณ (9.26), "wait for you". The form is the same in each place (Section D, rule 1). - คุณ as "your": บ้านคุณ (9.27), "your house"; คุณแม่ของคุณ (9.28), "your mother", where the first คุณ is the honorific of คุณแม่ and the second is the pronoun (Section D, rules 1 and 7). - ขอบคุณ: the "thank you" of the note (9.17, 9.29) and of its ending, ด้วยความขอบคุณ (9.30), "with thanks". In 9.17 ขอบคุณคุณ has both uses of the word side by side (Section D, rule 9).
Nok keeps to one system. She says ฉัน and ends with ค่ะ in statements (9.17, 9.19, 9.21, 9.23, 9.26) and คะ in questions and after นะ (9.20, 9.22, 9.24, 9.25, 9.28, 9.29). To Fon she says หนู: หนูฝน (9.19, 9.23), as in Lesson 8, where she called Fon หนู in speech.
Other points: - ถ้า … ไม่ (thâa … mâi), "if … not", is the Thai "without": ถ้าไม่มีคุณ (9.18), "if I did not have you". - คง (khong), "probably", turns a sentence into a probable result: ฉันคงยกไม่ไหว, "I probably could not lift it". - ไม่ต้อง (mâi-tɔ̂ng), "need not", is "must not" with ไม่: คุณไม่ต้องเอาอะไรมา (9.24), "you need not bring anything" (compare ต้อง in 9.10). - แค่ … ก็ (khɛ̂ɛ … gɔ̂ɔ), "only … then", joins a condition and its result: แค่คุณมาฉันก็ดีใจ (9.24), "if only you come, I am glad". - หกโมงเย็น (hòk moong yen), literally "six o'clock evening", is six in the evening (9.26). Thai counts the hours of the afternoon and evening from one: บ่ายโมง (1 p.m.) to หกโมงเย็น. - ที่แล้ว (thîi-lɛ́ɛw), "that has passed", makes a week day "last": วันเสาร์ที่แล้ว (9.17), "last Saturday". - ใจดี (jai-dii), "kind", is "good-hearted"; ที่สุด (thîi-sùt) is the superlative, "most" (9.29). - นั่นเอง (nân-eeng) closes a sentence with "that is all, just so" (9.27).
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
- IPA: /kʰun/ — mid tone - ค (kh): aspirated, like the k of English kin, with a puff of air. Not the soft g of ก. - ุ (u): a short u, like the oo of foot, never the long oo of food. - ณ (n): pronounced as an ordinary n, exactly like น. - Tone: mid. Say it level, at the ordinary height of your voice. The rule: ค is a low-class consonant, the syllable is live (it ends in n), and there is no tone mark, so the tone is mid.
- ขอบคุณ (khɔ̀ɔp-khun) /kʰɔ̀ːp.kʰun/: low, then mid. The ขอบ is the dead syllable of a high-class consonant (low tone). - เธอ (thəə) /tʰɤː/: mid. The th is an aspirated t with a puff of air, as ท always is in Thai; it is never the th of English the. - ท่าน (thâan) /tʰâːn/: falling. The tone mark ่ on a low-class consonant gives a falling tone. - มึง (mɯng) /mɯŋ/: mid. The ng ends the word as in English sing; the vowel is the smiling oo ɯ. - แก (gɛɛ) /kɛː/: mid. The vowel is the a of cat, lengthened. - เอ็ง (eng) /ʔeŋ/: mid. The mark ็ makes the vowel short. - หรือเปล่า (rɯ̌ɯ-plàao) /rɯ̌ː plàːw/: rising, then low. หรือ is an ห-leading syllable, which makes the low-class ร follow the high-class rules. - พวก (phûak) /pʰûak/: falling.
- ค and ข: both are aspirated k. ค is low class (mid tone in คุณ) and ข is high class (rising tone in ขุน). - ณ and น: both are n. The spelling ณ is kept for Sanskrit and Pali words. - ɯ in มึง (mɯng), ชื่อ (chɯ̂ɯ) and คือ (khɯɯ): say oo with the lips spread, as if smiling. - ə in เธอ (thəə) and เชิญ (chəən): the vowel of British her, without any r. - ng at the start of a syllable, as in ทำงาน (tham-ngaan): the ng of sing, now before a vowel. - ป (p) in ไป (pai) and ต (t) in ตู้ (tûu) are unaspirated: no puff of air. The respellings write bp and dt.
- คุณ (khun) "you" and คุณ (khun) "merit, worth" are the same word, and the context separates them: ขอบคุณ is "thank you", and คุณภาพ is "quality". - เธอ (thəə) is "you" and "she", and only the listener's knowledge of who is meant separates them. - คุณ (khun) and ขุน (khǔn), "lord", are spelt with different consonants and different tones. - มา (maa) "to come" and หมา (mǎa) "dog" differ only in tone: มา is mid, and หมา rises.
