Lesson 17 Vietnamese: A Latinum Institute Modern Language Course

với - With

INTRODUCTION

What does "with" mean in Vietnamese?

For the autodidact student: the English word "with" is a preposition that does many jobs. It says who is beside you ("I went with my sister"), what you use ("cut it with a knife"), what you have ("the girl with the long hair"), and what goes together ("coffee with milk"). The vocabulary list that this course follows gives "with" as a preposition, Grammar, accompaniment, together/using. Vietnamese does not have one word for all of these. It has one word for the first job, and other words for the others.

- The "with" of company: với (v + ơ with the acute accent + i; rising tone). It means "with, together with, along with" a person or a thing, and it is the headword of this lesson. - The "with" of a tool or a means: bằng "by, by means of" (17.19, Section D). - The "with" of having: có "have" (Section D, rule 9). - The written "with": cùng, and cùng với, in careful speech and in writing (Section D, rule 9).

Six things differ from English:

1. Với is company. A verb, then với, then the person: Tôi đi với bạn "I go with you" (17.1), Tôi ở với mẹ "I live with my mother" (17.2). The question is Bạn đi với ai? "With whom do you go?" (17.4), and với stays before ai, as in the formal English "With whom are you going?" and not at the end, as in the spoken "Who are you going with?" 2. Với is also "and". Between two nouns, với joins them as companions: Mẹ với bố ở nhà "Mother and father are at home" (17.6), mua cá với rau "buys fish and vegetables" (17.12). It does not join verbs or clauses; for that, Vietnamese uses và (Lesson 3). 3. Với ends a sentence as a request. Cho tôi đi với! (17.5) is "Let me come along!", and Bạn giúp mình với (17.22) is "Please help me". There is no English word for this one; "along", "please" and "too" each carry a little of it. 4. Verbs of speaking and feeling take với before the person. English says "talk with", "tell", "be kind to", "get to know" and "different from". Vietnamese says với in all of them: nói chuyện với (17.7), nói với (17.17), tốt với (17.26), làm quen với (17.11), khác với (17.13). 5. Với can start a sentence. Với tôi, tiếng Việt không khó lắm "For me, Vietnamese is not very hard" (17.15). Với số tiền đó … "With that money …" (17.14). 6. Với is not the word for a tool. "I eat with chopsticks" is Tôi ăn bằng đũa, and not ~~Tôi ăn với đũa~~ (Section D, rule 8).

The word in the dictionaries. English Wiktionary lists với as a preposition, "with; together with; along with; and", and gives two uses in mathematics and geometry (cộng 2 với 3 "to add 2 to 3", đường thẳng d song song với đường thẳng e "line d is parallel to line e"). It gives a short form of đối với "to", with the example (Đối) với tôi, vấn đề này chẳng có gì đáng lo ngại cả "To me, there's nothing to worry about this problem". It lists a separate particle that stands at the end of a sentence to ask for inclusion or help, with Cho con đi với "Let me go with you please" and Mày rảnh làm dùm bố với "If you're free, how 'bout give your old man a hand?". The Hanoi pronunciation is [vəːj˧˦]; the Saigon entry gives [vəːj˦˥] or [jəːj˦˥]. The same entry lists, under another origin, a verb với "to reach (out for something)" and a noun, "a stretch of the hand". The Vietnamese Wiktionary agrees. It defines the preposition as one that shows a relation of connection (Tôi đi với anh "I go with you"; Đối xử tốt với bạn "Treat friends well"; Họ đã đính hôn với nhau "They got engaged") and also one that shows manner or means (Với số tiền đó, anh có thể mua được căn nhà ấy "With that money, you can buy that house"). It lists the sentence-final particle too: Anh cho nó đi với "Let him go along" and Cứu chị ta với "Please help her". The verb is there too: Cao quá chẳng với tới "Too high to reach". For bằng English Wiktionary gives "by; by means of" (bằng ô tô "by car", bằng tiếng Việt "in Vietnamese") and "made of" (bức tường bằng gạch "a brick wall"). For cùng it gives a conjunction, "with; and", and an adjective, "same; together". For khác it gives "different, other", with giống as the opposite. It gives chúng mình as "we, us (inclusive)", familiar and respectful.

Already met. Với has been in the course from Lesson 3: Bà lão tham lam và giận dữ với chồng (3.21), where Lesson 3 also set với beside và; Một giấc mơ kỳ lạ đến với tôi (4.15); nói chuyện với mẹ (7.29); ta với ta, the last words of Nguyễn Khuyến's poem in Lesson 9; làm quen với bạn (9.19); and tôi sẽ nói với anh ấy (16.12). This lesson sets the uses in order.

Why với, and not another word. The list asks for "accompaniment: together/using". The first half is với. The second half, "using", is bằng, and the lesson shows both, in one sentence (17.19), so that the learner sees where one stops and the other begins. Với is the word of speech in every region and register; cùng and bằng have their places in Section D.

Orthography. Với is v + ơ + i, with the acute accent on the ơ: the horn on the letter and the tone mark are on the same vowel. The same letters with other marks are other words: vời (far, remote, as in xa vời), vơi (to grow less, to ebb) and với itself. Tone is part of the spelling.

PRONUNCIATION GUIDE

The IPA in this lesson is a broad transcription of the Hanoi standard, with the tone written in Chao tone letters after each syllable, as in the earlier lessons. The six tones, in Hanoi values:

- Level, no mark: ma /maː˧˧/ "ghost" - Falling, grave accent: mà /maː˨˩/ "but" - Rising, acute accent: má /maː˧˦/ "mother (Southern); cheek" - Dipping, hook above: mả /maː˧˩/ "grave, tomb" - Broken rising, tilde: mã /maː˧˥/ "horse (Sino-Vietnamese)", with a glottal break in the middle of the vowel - Heavy, dot below: mạ /maː˧˨ʔ/ "rice seedling", short, low, ending in a glottal catch

Key words for this lesson:

- với /vəːj˧˦/ — v is as in English "van"; ơ is a long [əː], the vowel of English "fur" without the r; the i is a glide [j] after it. The acute tone rises. In the South the first sound may be [j], as in English "yes" (English Wiktionary gives [jəːj˦˥] beside [vəːj˦˥] for Saigon). - ai /ʔaːj˧˧/ — the word begins with a glottal stop, which English does not write. - bằng /ʔɓaŋ˨˩/ — b is an implosive [ʔɓ]; ằ is a short [a] with the falling tone; the final -ng is [ŋ]. - mình /miŋ˨˩/, bạn /ʔɓaːn˧˨ʔ/ and cho /t͡ɕɔ˧˧/ — ch is [t͡ɕ], like the English "ch" in "cheese" said further back in the mouth. - khác /xaːk˧˦/ and không /xəwŋ͡m˧˧/ — kh is [x], the "ch" of Scottish "loch". - chúng /t͡ɕuŋ͡m˧˦/ — after u the lips close at the end of -ng. - giúp /zup˧˦/ — gi is [z] in Hanoi; the final -p is closed by the lips. - sữa /sɨə˧˥/ and được /ʔɗɨək˧˨ʔ/ — ư is [ɨ], a high vowel said with the lips spread; ươ and ưa glide from [ɨ] to [ə]; đ is an implosive [ʔɗ]. - hỏa /hwaː˧˩/ — as in tàu hỏa, "train". - Phật /fət˧˨ʔ/ and mặc /mak˧˨ʔ/ — ph is [f]; the heavy tone with a final stop is short and low, with a glottal catch.

SECTION B: NATURAL SENTENCES

Provenance. The uses of với in this lesson are checked against English Wiktionary (với, bằng, cùng, khác, chúng mình) and the Vietnamese Wiktionary (với). 17.14 is the Vietnamese Wiktionary's own example for the preposition of manner or means, word for word: Với số tiền đó, anh có thể mua được căn nhà ấy. 17.5 adapts English Wiktionary's Cho con đi với., with tôi for con; 17.1 adapts the Vietnamese Wiktionary's Tôi đi với anh.; 17.11 adapts Rất vui được làm quen với bạn! (9.19); 17.15 follows the pattern of English Wiktionary's (Đối) với tôi, …; 17.13 and 17.26 follow the Vietnamese Wiktionary's tốt với pattern and the entry for khác. The remaining sentences of the lesson are constructed for teaching (Acceptabile), from verified words and patterns, many of them met earlier in the course (nói chuyện với mẹ, 7.29; tôi sẽ nói với anh ấy, 16.12; Hải Phòng and anh Sơn, Lesson 16). None of these is a quotation. One word is not confirmed in the dictionaries consulted: so với "compared with" (17.29), a standard comparison phrase whose entry could not be opened; it is used as a plain construction of với and is flagged as such in Section D, rule 7. The authentic text of this lesson is Section F.

SECTION D: GRAMMAR EXPLANATION

These are the grammar rules for với in Vietnamese:

1. With a person: verb + với + person. Với puts the companion after the verb and after anything that completes it. English Wiktionary glosses it "with; together with; along with", and the Vietnamese Wiktionary gives Tôi đi với anh as its first example. Tôi đi với bạn. (17.1), Tôi ở với mẹ. (17.2), Anh ấy đi làm với bạn. (17.8), Chị gái tôi sống với bà. (17.10). If the verb has an object or a place, với comes after it: đi chợ với mẹ "go to the market with Mother" (17.12), and not ~~đi với mẹ chợ~~. The companion may be a pronoun from Lesson 16: với anh ấy (16.12).

2. The question: với ai? To ask "with whom?" put ai where the person would stand: Bạn đi với ai? (17.4). The answer repeats the frame: Tôi đi với anh Sơn. Với is not left behind at the end, as English "Who are you going with?" leaves it; it stays before ai.

3. With food and drink: what goes with what. Với joins a dish to what is eaten or drunk with it: ăn cơm với cá (17.3), uống cà phê với sữa (17.9). English says "rice with fish" in the same way. The other side of the pair is not a tool but a companion on the plate or in the cup.

4. Với = "and" between nouns (spoken). English Wiktionary lists "and" among the senses of với. It joins two nouns or pronouns as if they were companions: Mẹ với bố ở nhà. (17.6), mua cá với rau (17.12). It is spoken Vietnamese; in a careful text và is usual. The two words differ in scope: - Và joins anything of the same kind: nouns, verbs, adjectives, whole clauses (Lesson 3). Tôi ăn và uống. "I eat and drink." - Với joins nouns and pronouns only. ~~Tôi ăn với uống~~ is wrong. - A pair joined by với can be a subject: Tôi với anh ấy là bạn. "He and I are friends." The pair is then felt as a pair, "I together with him".

5. Với at the end: "along", "please". English Wiktionary lists a particle với at the end of a sentence that "indicates request for inclusion/help", and the Vietnamese Wiktionary lists it as a particle too (Anh cho nó đi với "Let him go along"). Two frames are common: - cho … đi với "let … come along": Cho tôi đi với! (17.5). Without với, Cho tôi đi is the plain "Let me go". With it the speaker asks to be taken too. English Wiktionary's own example is Cho con đi với., where con is the child's "I". - … với after a request, to make it a plea and a softer one: Bạn giúp mình với. (17.22), "Please help me". The Vietnamese Wiktionary's example is Cứu chị ta với "Please help her". The particle has no other place in the sentence: it is the last word.

6. The person you speak to or deal with: nói với, nói chuyện với, làm quen với, tốt với. In these verbs với introduces the person at the receiving end, and the English preposition varies: "tell", "talk with", "get to know", "kind to". - nói với — Mình sẽ nói với mẹ. (17.17). Without với, ~~nói mẹ~~ is not "tell Mother". - nói chuyện với — "to have a talk with": nói chuyện với mẹ (17.7), thích nói chuyện với bạn (17.27). - làm quen với — "to get to know": Rất vui được làm quen với anh. (17.11) - tốt với — "kind to": Mẹ bạn tốt với mình quá! (17.26). Likewise giận dữ với "angry with" (3.21).

7. Comparing: khác với, so với. English Wiktionary gives khác as "different, other". With với it names the thing that it differs from: Tiếng Việt khác với tiếng Anh. (17.13). So với is "compared with": So với Hà Nội, Hải Phòng nhỏ hơn (17.29), where the thing compared with comes first and the comparison follows after the comma. (This phrase is standard, but the dictionary entry could not be opened for this lesson; treat it as a constructed example.) Mathematics and geometry use the same word: song song với "parallel to" (English Wiktionary).

8. Với at the start of a sentence; với and bằng. - Với can open a sentence. English Wiktionary gives it as the short form of đối với "to, as for": Với tôi, tiếng Việt không khó lắm. (17.15). The Vietnamese Wiktionary gives the sense of manner and means, with a thing that is possible given what one has: Với số tiền đó, anh có thể mua được căn nhà ấy. (17.14), where được after mua says that the buying is possible. - Với is not for a tool. A tool, a vehicle, a language or a material is bằng "by, by means of" (English Wiktionary: bằng ô tô "by car", bằng tiếng Việt "in Vietnamese"). In 17.19 both are in one sentence: Mình đi với bạn bằng tàu hỏa, "I go with you by train". The first với is the company, and the bằng is the train. So: Tôi ăn bằng đũa "I eat with chopsticks" (đũa is "chopsticks"). The learner who says ~~ăn với đũa~~ has put the chopsticks at the table as a guest.

9. Other words for "with". - có "have" is the "with" of having: cô gái có mái tóc dài "the girl with long hair", literally "the girl has hair long". Vietnamese has no relative "with" here (Lesson 11 gave có "have"). - cùng is, in English Wiktionary, a conjunction "with; and" and an adjective "same; together". The learner meets it in cùng nhau "together" and in cùng với "together with", which is the usual pairing in writing and in the news. In speech, với is enough. - bằng is "by means of" (rule 8). In Lesson 7 it was also "as … as" (đẹp bằng sen); the sense is different, and the context tells which.

10. A different word, the same spelling: với "to reach". The Vietnamese Wiktionary gives với as a verb, "to raise one's arm to take hold": Cao quá chẳng với tới "Too high to reach", and as a noun for the height of a raised arm: Cây chuối cao một với "The banana tree is one arm-span tall". It is not the preposition. English Wiktionary lists it as a separate word.

Common Mistakes

- Using với for a tool or a vehicle. ~~Tôi ăn với đũa~~ and ~~Tôi đi với tàu hỏa~~ are wrong. Say Tôi ăn bằng đũa and đi bằng tàu hỏa. (Rule 8) - Using với for "having". ~~cô gái với mái tóc dài~~ is wrong. Say cô gái có mái tóc dài. (Rule 9) - Joining verbs or clauses with với. ~~Tôi ăn với uống~~ is wrong: use và. (Rule 4) - Joining a companion with và. ~~Tôi đi và bạn~~ is wrong. Say Tôi đi với bạn. (17.1) Tôi và bạn đi means "You and I go", which is a different sentence: the two are the subject. - Leaving out với after nói. ~~Mình sẽ nói mẹ~~ is wrong. Say Mình sẽ nói với mẹ. (17.17) - Leaving với behind. Do not put it at the end of the question as in English: ~~Bạn đi ai với?~~ is wrong. Say Bạn đi với ai? (17.4) - Dropping the final với from a plea. Cho tôi đi is "Let me go"; Cho tôi đi với! is "Let me come too!" (17.5) - Mixing up the tones. với (with) is not vời (far, as in xa vời) or vơi (to grow less, to ebb). - Mixing up the two với's. Với "to reach" (rule 10) is not the preposition.

SECTION E: CULTURAL CONTEXT

Frequency and register. "With" is rank 17 in the vocabulary list that this course follows. Với is a word of every day and every region, and it is neutral: there is no polite or rude với. Cùng and cùng với are the written words; the learner who reads the news will meet them often.

Với in the welcome. A common greeting on notices and websites is Chào mừng bạn đến với … "Welcome to …". Đến với is "come to", with a little warmth: the guest comes not only to a place but toward the people in it. Lesson 4 had the same pair in Một giấc mơ kỳ lạ đến với tôi (4.15), "A strange dream came to me".

"Ta với ta". In Lesson 9 the last words of Nguyễn Khuyến's poem were ta với ta, "I with I". The preposition of company is made to say that there is no one else: the friend and the host are together, and nothing else is in the room. A learner who has the plain đi với bạn can feel how far the poem has stretched it.

Coffee with milk. The two drinks of 17.20 and 17.21 are the black coffee, cà phê đen, and the coffee with milk, cà phê với sữa. The lesson uses the full form, with với, so that the word of company can be seen doing its work in a cup.

Hà Nội and Hải Phòng. Hà Nội is the capital (5.3) and Hải Phòng the city of Sơn's invitation (16.28), so that So với Hà Nội, Hải Phòng nhỏ hơn (17.29) measures the second against the first and then adds a compliment with nhưng. Nam and Anna go by train, tàu hỏa; the word tàu alone can also mean "ship", and so for a train it is safer to say both syllables.

Who goes with whom. The question Bạn đi với ai? is an ordinary, friendly one, and the answer says something of the speaker's world: với mẹ, với bạn, với anh Sơn. The speaker of 17.16 asks Nam to come, and Nam's mother is added to the party at 17.25. The lesson ends as it began, in company.

The text is as given on two pages that agree on every word (lazi.vn, "Đi với phật mặc áo cà sa, đi với ma mặc áo giấy", and aiva.com.vn, under the same title). The pages print the first figure with a small p; this lesson writes Phật, the ordinary spelling of the Buddha's name, and changes nothing else. Both pages note that bụt is the other, older word for the same figure, and the saying is also heard with it; that form is not used here, because the two pages that were opened did not print it. The pages give no origin, and say only that the saying was handed down from the ancestors.

The sense. The two pages explain the proverb in the same way: one must adapt to circumstances and to the company one is in. With virtuous people one behaves virtuously, and with the bad one needs the means to deal with them (lazi.vn); one respects good people, and firmly counters those who try to exploit one (aiva.com.vn). The proverb says it in clothes: the monk's robe for the Buddha, the paper clothes for the ghost.

Đi với. The proverb is a clear case of rule 1. Đi với Phật is "go with the Buddha", the verb, then với, then the companion, and the same frame is used again for ma. The two halves are set side by side, each of seven syllables, and the repeated đi với … mặc áo … makes the sound of the proverb easy to remember. The only words that change are the companion and the garment.

No "when", no "if". Vietnamese does not say "when you go with the Buddha, then …". The two clauses are laid next to each other, and the first gives the condition: đi với Phật is "(when) one goes with the Buddha". The learner has met the same bareness in Lesson 16's cứ rượu xong là hắn chửi, where the condition is a noun and a verb with no "when": the relation of the two clauses is in their order.

Mặc áo. Mặc is "to wear" clothes on the body, and áo is a garment, here a long one. Cà sa is the monk's robe, and the two syllables belong together (the form in the sources is cà sa, in two words). Áo giấy is "paper clothes", giấy being "paper". The pages consulted explain only the sense of the saying. They do not explain the image of paper clothes; the learner who knows the custom of burning paper offerings for the dead will read the line in that light, but that is general knowledge and not something the two pages state.

Phật and bụt. Phật is the Sino-Vietnamese word for the Buddha and the usual one today. The pages note that bụt is the other, older word, and that the proverb is also found with it.

The text. The two pages agree in every word, apart from the small p noted above. The proverb has no fixed written source, and it is not a quotation from a book; the wording is the one in current use.

Part D: Grammar and Vocabulary Explanation

The dialogue. The scene has the form of the dialogue in Lesson 16, and it runs on the invitation of 16.28: Anna has been asked to Hải Phòng by Sơn, and the question of the lesson is who will go with her. Every line has với, and each line has it in a different job, so that the learner meets the word in the order of Section D.

Asking someone to come. Anna begins (17.16) with the vocative Nam, the plan, cuối tuần này mình đi Hải Phòng "this weekend I go to Hải Phòng" (cuối tuần is "weekend", literally "the end of the week"), and the question Bạn có đi với mình không? This is the frame có … không (Lesson 7, 7.20), with với mình between: "Do you go with me or not?" Nam's answer is Có "yes", the answer to a có … không question. He says Mình rất muốn đi với bạn (muốn "want", Lesson 8, 8.15) and Mình sẽ nói với mẹ (rule 6): the plan is that he will tell his mother, not ask her.

Worry and company. In 17.18 Đi với bạn thì mình không lo has the topic marker thì (Lesson 2): "As for going with you, I do not worry". The company is the reason for the calm. Lo is "worry".

The train. In 17.19 Nam's plan has both words: đi với bạn and bằng tàu hỏa. The company is với, and the means is bằng (rule 8). Tàu hỏa, "train", is "ship" and "fire" (that is, the fire-ship, the steam train). Anh Sơn sẽ đón chúng mình ở ga repeats 16.29, with chúng mình, the "we" that includes the one spoken to (English Wiktionary: "we, us (inclusive)"), in place of bạn.

Coffee. Anna wants a gift for Sơn, and coffee comes to mind. In 17.20 she asks cà phê với sữa hay cà phê đen?, where hay is "or" in a question and đen "black". Nam's answer (17.21) has không thích cà phê với sữa: the same pair, with với joining the drink to what is put in it (rule 3). Anh ấy, as in Lesson 16, is Sơn.

Please help. Anna's request (17.22) ends with the particle: Bạn giúp mình với "Please help me" (rule 5). The sentence that follows it, mình chưa biết chọn quà gì, has chưa "not yet", biết "know", chọn "choose" and quà "gift". Gì is the question word of Lesson 7 (7.18) used inside a clause: "what (present) to choose".

The market. Nam's reply, Sáng mai mình đi chợ với bạn (17.23), is rule 1 once more, with sáng mai "tomorrow morning" in front. Anna says (17.24) that she likes it: Tốt quá! is "Good!" with quá "very, too". Her thích đi chợ với bạn is thích + a verb phrase. The mother is added (17.25), in the đi với chúng mình of the same pattern as đi với bạn.

Kind to me. In 17.26 tốt với mình is "good to me", with the với of rule 6. Nam reports his mother's liking (17.27), mẹ thích nói chuyện với bạn; the second mẹ in Mẹ mình nói mẹ thích … is "she", the repeated noun in place of a pronoun (compare bố về in 16.25). Anna answers with bác (17.28), the respectful word that she used of Nam's father in 16.24 (bác ấy), here the object of với.

Compared with. Nam's line about the city (17.29) opens with So với Hà Nội, "compared with Hà Nội" (rule 7). Then the sentence goes on: Hải Phòng nhỏ hơn, "Hải Phòng is smaller", with hơn "more than" (Lesson 16, 16.23), and nhưng đồ ăn rất ngon, "but the food is very good", where đồ ăn is "food" (things to eat).

Goodbye. The last line, mình rất vui được đi với bạn! (17.30), repeats rất vui được … (17.11) with the plan: "I am very happy to get to go with you".

PRONUNCIATION AND ORTHOGRAPHY NOTES

The letters of this lesson. Vietnamese adds to the Latin alphabet ă, â, đ, ê, ô, ơ, ư, and marks five of its six tones with à á ả ã ạ. A letter may carry a vowel mark and a tone mark at once: với (ơ + sắc), Phật (â + nặng), mặc (ă + nặng), hỏa (o + hỏi), giấy (â + sắc), bạn (a + nặng), bằng (ă + huyền), bố (ô + sắc), bác (a + sắc), cũng (u + ngã), sống (ô + sắc), uống (ô + sắc), sữa (ư + ngã), được (ư + nặng), thể (ê + hỏi), mẹ (e + nặng), chợ (ơ + nặng), ở (ơ + hỏi), tuần (u + huyền), cuối (ô + sắc), đón (o + sắc), nhỏ (o + hỏi), hơn (ơ, level), khó (o + sắc), giúp (u + sắc), chọn (o + nặng), quà (a + huyền), gì (i + huyền), tốt (ô + sắc), thì (i + huyền), tàu (a + huyền), Hà (a + huyền), Nội (ô + nặng), muốn (ô + sắc), đũa (ũ + ngã, the word of the Common Mistakes), rất (â + sắc), đồ (o + huyền).

Where the tone mark goes. On the main vowel of the syllable. In ươ it goes on the ơ (được, người); in uô on the ô (cuối, muốn, uống); in iê on the ê (tiếng, Việt). A vowel that already carries a mark (ê, ơ, ô, ư, â, ă) takes the tone mark as well, as in với, mặc and giấy. In ưa with no final consonant the tone goes on the ư (sữa, chưa). In hỏa the mark is written on the o, the first vowel of oa, as this course has done before.

With, far, less. với /vəːj˧˦/ (with), vời /vəːj˨˩/ (far, remote) and vơi /vəːj˧˧/ (to grow less, to ebb) have the same letters and differ in tone alone. The learner who hears với in a sentence will hear it rise; the other two do not.

The letters kh, ch, gi, ng. Kh is [x], the sound at the start of không and khác. Ch and tr are both [t͡ɕ]: chợ, chọn, chúng, chưa, cho. In the Hanoi standard d, gi and r are all [z]: giúp, giấy, gì, rau, rất. [ŋ] is spelt ng before a, o, ô, u, ư, ơ, as in ngon and ngày.

Final -ng, -c, -p, -t, -n, -m. After o, ô, u the lips close at the end of -ng: không [xəwŋ͡m], Phòng [fawŋ͡m], sống [səwŋ͡m], cũng [kuŋ͡m], chúng [t͡ɕuŋ͡m]. After iê, uô, ư, i they do not: tiếng [tiəŋ], uống [ʔuəŋ], mình [miŋ] (spelt -nh, and sounded [ŋ] here). A heavy tone with a final -c, -p, -t or -n is short and low, with a glottal catch: mặc [mak˧˨ʔ], Phật [fət˧˨ʔ], được [ʔɗɨək˧˨ʔ], Việt [viət˧˨ʔ].

Tone pairs to drill. với (with) / vời (far) / vơi (to grow less); bạn (friend) / bàn (table) / bán (to sell); mẹ (mother) / mè (sesame) / mê (to be mad about); bố (father) / bồ (sweetheart) / bờ (shore); cá (fish) / cà (aubergine) / ca (song); chợ (market) / chờ (to wait) / chớ (do not).
