For autodidact students of Burmese, the first thing to know about "be" is that Burmese does not have one verb for it. English says "the teacher is a doctor", "the book is on the table" and "he is not at home" with the same word. Burmese shares the work between three: ဖြစ် (hprac) for what a thing is or becomes, ရှိ (hri.) for where it is and whether it exists, and မဟုတ် (ma.huik) for "is not". This lesson is about the first of the three, ဖြစ်, which is the one that joins a noun to a noun.
The headword is the word a Burmese writer uses for "is" between two nouns: ထိုသူသည် ဆရာ ဖြစ်သည်။ (htui su sany hca.ra hprac sany.), "that person — as for him — teacher, he is". There is no "a": ဆရာ stands bare, as စာအုပ် did in the first lesson. Grammarians point out that ဖြစ် is not a copula in the strict sense. Its basic meaning is "become, happen", and "be" is the translation that fits when it stands after a noun. This is why one word covers three uses: - Identity: ဦးကျော်သည် ဆရာ ဖြစ်သည် (u: kyau sany hca.ra hprac sany), "U Kyaw is a teacher" - Change: ထိုကလေးသည် ဆရာဝန် ဖြစ်လာသည် (htui ka.le: sany hca.rawan hprac la sany), "that child became a doctor" - Happening: ထိုအရာ ဖြစ်ခဲ့သည် (htui a.ra hprac hkai. sany), "that happened"
Burmese keeps location and existence apart from all three. ထိုခွေးသည် ထိုအိမ်တွင် ရှိသည် (htui hkwe: sany htui im twang hri. sany), "the dog is in the house", is sentence 1.3 of the first lesson, with ရှိ. The first lesson used ဖြစ် twice without comment, in 1.12 and in Article 1 of the Declaration; this lesson looks at it closely. The words for "is not" are different again. "He is not a teacher" is ဆရာ မဟုတ်ပါ (hca.ra ma.huik pa), and ဆရာ မဖြစ်ပါ would say something else, that he did not become one. Section D sets these apart.
ဖြစ် takes many small words after it, and these make it a rich headword: ဖြစ်လာ (become), ဖြစ်ခဲ့ (happened), ဖြစ်နိုင် (can be, is possible), ဖြစ်လို (wants to be), ဖြစ်ရန် (in order to be), ဖြစ်ပြီး (is, and), ဖြစ်သော (which is), ဖြစ်သောကြောင့် (because it is), and, with the prefix အ-, အဖြစ် (as, in the capacity of).
Script note: ဖြစ် is the consonant ဖ (hpa), an aspirated p, with the medial sign ြ (ya-yit) written around it and the consonant စ် (ca) closed by the killer-stroke ် (asat). The medial ြ changes the sound: ဖြ is not "hpr" but "py". ဖြစ် is read hprac in the romanisation and said /pʰjɪʔ/, "pyit", with a catch in the throat at the end. The same medial is in ကြီး (kri:) and မြစ် (mrac) of the first lesson, where it gives "j" and "my".
Key Takeaways: - Burmese has no single verb "be": ဖြစ် for identity, change and happening; ရှိ for place and existence; မဟုတ် for "is not" - A noun is joined to a noun by ဖြစ်, with no "a" and no "the": ဆရာ ဖြစ်သည် - ဖြစ်လာ is "become" (literally "be-come"), ဖြစ်ခဲ့ is "happened", ဖြစ်နိုင် is "can be" - The negative of "is" is မဟုတ်, not မဖြစ်; မဖြစ်နိုင် is "cannot be, is impossible" - အဖြစ် after a noun means "as": ကျောင်းအုပ် အဖြစ်, "as headmaster" - In speech the "is" between nouns is often only ပါ: သူက ဆရာဝန်ပါ

These are the grammar rules for expressing "be" in Burmese.
There is no single verb "be". English uses "is" for what a thing is, where it is and whether it exists. Burmese divides these: - What it is, or becomes, or what happens: ဖြစ် (hprac), the headword of this lesson - Where it is, or that it exists, or that someone has it: ရှိ (hri.), as in ထိုခွေးသည် ထိုအိမ်တွင် ရှိသည် (the dog is in the house, 1.3) in the first lesson - That it is not what is said: မဟုတ် (ma.huik)
Noun + noun: ဖြစ်. The pattern is subject + သည်, then the noun that says what the subject is, then ဖြစ် and the ending: ဦးကျော်သည် ဆရာ ဖြစ်သည် (2.1). The second noun is bare. It takes no "a" and no "the", and when a count is wanted it takes the numeral and the classifier after the noun, as in ဆရာမ တစ်ယောက် ဖြစ်သည် (2.8). - Person: ဆရာ ဖြစ်သည် (2.1), ဆရာဝန် ဖြစ်သည် (2.2), ကျောင်းသား ဖြစ်သည် (2.4), လယ်သမား ဖြစ်သည် (2.5) - Thing: ဆရာ၏ အိမ် ဖြစ်သည် (2.7), "it is the teacher's house" - Place: မြို့ကြီး ဖြစ်သည် (2.3), မြစ်ကြီး ဖြစ်သည် (2.9)
An adjective needs no ဖြစ်. Adjectives are verbs, as the first lesson showed, and they take the ending directly: ကြီးသည် (is big). မြို့ကြီး ဖြစ်သည် (2.3) is "is a big city", because မြို့ကြီး is a noun, "big-city", and ဖြစ် joins it to the subject. Two nouns may share the subject, joined by ပြီး (2.12).
"Become": ဖြစ်လာ. လာ (la), "come", follows ဖြစ် and gives "come to be", "become": ဆရာဝန် ဖြစ်လာသည် (he became a doctor, 2.26). A thing that will become takes the future ending လိမ့်မည်: ဖြစ်လိမ့်မည် (2.6). Both the English "become" and the Burmese ဖြစ်လာ are made of "be" and "come".
"Happen": ဖြစ်ခဲ့. With an event for its subject, ဖြစ် means "happens". ခဲ့ (hkai.), the mark of a finished event from the first lesson, comes before the ending: အဖြစ်အပျက် တစ်ခု ဖြစ်ခဲ့သည် (an event happened, 2.14). အဖြစ်အပျက် is a noun, "happenings", made from ဖြစ် and ပျက် (pyak, "perish").
What comes after ဖြစ်. Many small words are added before the ending or before a following noun: - ဖြစ်သည်: is (the plain ending, the form of newspapers and narrative) - ဖြစ်ပါသည်: is (polite, 2.10), ပါ added before သည် - ဖြစ်နိုင်: can be, is possible (2.13, 2.21); မဖြစ်နိုင်ပါ: cannot be - ဖြစ်လို: wants to be (2.22) - ဖြစ်ရန်: in order to be (2.23); ဖြစ်စေရန်: so that someone may be (2.24) - ဖြစ်ပြီး: is, and (2.12) - ဖြစ်သော: which is, before a noun (2.27), as the relative ending သော did in the first lesson - ဖြစ်သောကြောင့်: because it is (2.11)
"As": အဖြစ်. The prefix အ- (a.) makes a verb into a noun, and အဖြစ် (a.hprac) is "a being, a state of being". After a noun it is the word for "as": ကျောင်းအုပ် အဖြစ် (as headmaster, 2.15). Section F has it too: လူပုဂ္ဂိုလ်တစ်ဦး အဖြစ်ဖြင့်, "as one person".
Negation: မဟုတ်, not မဖြစ်. "A is not B" is made with မဟုတ် (ma.huik): ဆရာ မဟုတ်ပါ (2.10). မ (ma.) before the verb is the negative, ဟုတ် (huik) is "be so", and ပါ closes it politely. မဖြစ် is not the negative of "is". It says "does not become" or "cannot be", and မဖြစ်နိုင်ပါ (2.13) means "it cannot be, it is impossible".
Where ရှိ and ဖြစ် meet. A sentence may need both: ဆေးခန်း တစ်ခု ရှိသော ရွာ ဖြစ်လာသည် (2.28), "it became a village that has a clinic". ရှိသော says that a clinic exists there, and ဖြစ်လာ says what the village became.
Common Mistakes: - Using ဖြစ် for place: ထိုခွေးသည် ထိုအိမ်တွင် ဖြစ်သည် is wrong. Say ထိုခွေးသည် ထိုအိမ်တွင် ရှိသည်. - Negating with မဖြစ်: ထိုသူသည် ဆရာ မဖြစ်ပါ says that the person did not become a teacher. To say "is not a teacher", say ဆရာ မဟုတ်ပါ. - Adding ဖြစ် after an adjective: ထိုစာအုပ်သည် ကောင်း ဖြစ်သည် is not the way to say "the book is good". Say ကောင်းသည်. - Putting a word for "a" before the noun: Burmese has none. Say ဆရာ ဖြစ်သည်, not "တစ် ဆရာ ဖြစ်သည်". - Mixing registers: keep a sentence all written (သူသည် ဆရာဝန် ဖြစ်သည်) or all spoken (သူက ဆရာဝန်ပါ). - Taking ဖြစ်လာ for physical coming: လာ here is only the "come to" of "become". For someone arriving, the first lesson's ရောက်လာ is the word.

ဖြစ် is a written and a spoken word, but the sentence around it changes between the two registers. The written ထိုသူသည် ဆရာဝန် ဖြစ်သည်။ (htui su sany hca.rawan hprac sany.) is said in speech သူက ဆရာဝန်ပါ။ (su ka. hca.rawan pa.), and the speaker usually drops ဖြစ် altogether. In conversation the polite particle ပါ (pa) is fastened to the noun and does the work of "is": ကျွန်တော် ဆရာဝန်ပါ (kywantau hca.rawan pa), "I am a doctor". The spoken "is not" is မဟုတ်ဘူး (ma.huik bhu:), as in ဆရာ မဟုတ်ဘူး။ The spoken ဖြစ်တယ် (hprac tai) is used too, especially for what someone has become, but the noun with ပါ is the commoner way to say who one is.
In speech ဖြစ် is most at home as "happen" and "be possible". ဘာဖြစ်တာလဲ။ (bha hprac ta le:), "What happened? What is the matter?", is one of the first questions a learner hears. မဖြစ်ဘူး (ma. hprac bhu:) is "it won't do", an answer to a request, sharper than the written မဖြစ်နိုင်ပါ of 2.13.
ဖြစ် has a place in Buddhist speech. ဖြစ်ပျက် (hprac pyak), "arising and perishing", names the coming into being and passing away of all things, the teaching of impermanence. The noun အဖြစ်အပျက် of 2.14, an "event", is the same pair of words with the prefix အ- on each, and it is used by newspapers for any happening of the day. Burmese writers hear the older meaning behind it.
The names in this lesson show the Burmese system of address. There are no family names. A man is ဦး (u:) when he is older or is spoken of with respect, as in ဦးကျော်; a woman is ဒေါ် (dau), as in ဒေါ်မြင့်; and a boy or young man is မောင် (maung), as in the Genre Section. A person's own name stays the same as these titles change with age. The first lesson noted that ဆရာ (hca.ra) is "teacher" and also the word of respect for a doctor or any master. ဆရာဝန် (hca.rawan) is the common word for a medical doctor, and ဆရာမ (hca.ra.ma.) is a woman teacher, and also the respectful way to address a woman of that standing. Teaching and medicine are the two vocations of this lesson, and both are addressed with the same respect-word ဆရာ.
The ending သည် is the plain one of newspapers and narrative. Where politeness is wanted in writing, ပါ is added and the form is ဖြစ်ပါသည် (hprac pa sany), as in 2.10.

Article 6 of the Declaration, in the formal written language of official Burmese. It has the lesson's word inside အဖြစ်, "as", in the phrase "as a person before the law". This is a translation, not the work of a Burmese author, and it is given here because it is authentic official written Burmese in the register this course teaches. It is not the first article, which the first lesson used. The wording and the spacing are those of the Burmese Wikisource text of the Declaration.

လူတိုင်းတွင် ဥပဒေအရာ၌ လူပုဂ္ဂိုလ်တစ်ဦး အဖြစ်ဖြင့် အရာခပ်သိမ်းတွင် အသိအမှတ် ပြုခြင်းကို ခံယူပိုင်ခွင့်ရှိသည်။
F-D: Grammar and Literary Commentary
The Declaration was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948. The Burmese text is a translation, so it is not the work of a Burmese author, and the page consulted names no translator; but it is an authentic piece of official written Burmese, in the register that this course teaches.
The word of the lesson is in အဖြစ်ဖြင့် (a.hprac hprang.). အဖြစ် is ဖြစ် with the prefix အ-, the same word as in 2.15, "being, state, capacity"; ဖြင့် (hprang.) is the literary "with, by means of", so the pair means "in the capacity of, as". လူပုဂ္ဂိုလ်တစ်ဦး အဖြစ်ဖြင့် is therefore "as one person". လူပုဂ္ဂိုလ် (lupugguil) is a Pali-derived word for a person, and ဦး (u:) is the classifier of persons, the same spelling as the title ဦး of the names. In this lesson's examples a noun was joined to a noun by ဖြစ်; here the article does not say that everyone is a person, but that everyone is to be recognised in the capacity of one, and Burmese has used the nominal form အဖြစ် for it.
The verb of the sentence is not ဖြစ် at all, but ရှိသည် (hri. sany), "exists". လူတိုင်းတွင် … ပိုင်ခွင့်ရှိသည် is "at everyone there is a right", that is, "everyone has the right": the construction of the first lesson, where the place is followed by တွင် and the thing that exists comes before ရှိ. ဖြစ် and ရှိ, which this lesson has been setting apart, stand together in one sentence of the Declaration, one as a noun inside the phrase and one as the verb at its end.
The phrase ဥပဒေအရာ၌ (u.pade a.ra hnai.) is "in the matter of law": ဥပဒေ is "law", အရာ is "matter, sphere, rank", and ၌ is the literary "in". It is the Burmese for the English "before the law". အရာခပ်သိမ်းတွင် is "in all things", "everywhere". The long noun အသိအမှတ် ပြုခြင်း (a.si.a.hmac pru. hkrang:) is made from အသိအမှတ်ပြု, "recognise", with ခြင်း (hkrang:), which turns a verb into a noun, and it is marked as the object by ကို (kui). ခံယူ (hkamyu) is "receive, accept" and ပိုင်ခွင့် (puinghkwang.) is "the right, the authority to hold": the whole is "to hold the right to receive recognition".
Compare the Declaration with the English. English says "recognition as a person before the law" and puts the verb "have" first. Burmese puts the holder first, "at everyone", and the existence of the right last. The two sentences give the same idea in the grammar of two different languages.

A short tale in the plain written style of a school reader, composed for this lesson by the Latinum Institute (it is not a traditional text). Every sentence has ဖြစ် in it, as "is" in the first few and as "become" in the rest. It is told in the plain ending သည်, which carries the past without further marking.

Being, then becoming. The tale moves from "is" to "became", and the verb stays the same: - 2.16 to 2.19: ဖြစ်သည် says who Maung Kyaw is and what his father, his village and his state are - 2.20, 2.25, 2.26, 2.28, 2.29: ဖြစ်လာသည် says that someone or something came to be what it was not before - 2.30: ဖြစ်သည် again, at the end, for what he is from now on
One phrase, five turns. ဆရာဝန် ဖြစ်နိုင်သည် (2.21), "can become a doctor", is what the teacher says; ဆရာဝန် ဖြစ်လိုသည် (2.22), "wants to become", is what the boy feels; ဆရာဝန် ဖြစ်ရန် (2.23), "in order to become", is the obstacle; ဆရာဝန် ဖြစ်စေရန် (2.24), "so that he might become", is how it is overcome; and ဆရာဝန် ဖြစ်လာသည် (2.26) is the result. The same two words ဆရာဝန် ဖြစ် are followed each time by another small word.
Causative. စေ (ce) after a verb adds "cause to", so ဖြစ်စေ is "cause to be, let be". In 2.24 the villagers are the ones who cause it, and Maung Kyaw, standing bare before ဆရာဝန် ဖြစ်စေရန်, is the one who is to become.
A relative clause with ဖြစ်. ဆရာဝန် ဖြစ်သော မောင်ကျော် (2.27) is "Maung Kyaw, who is a doctor". The clause comes before the noun and ends in သော, as in the first lesson. Here it describes the state that the sentence before it brought about.
Bare nouns. The noun before ဖြစ် has no word for "a" in any sentence. A count appears only when a number is meant, as in ကျောင်းသား တစ်ယောက် (2.19) and ရွာငယ် တစ်ရွာ (2.17); ဆရာဝန် (2.22), ဆေးကျောင်းသား (2.25) and ရွာ၏ ဆရာဝန် (2.30) stand alone.
ရှိ inside the story. The village is မြစ် အနီးရှိသော ရွာငယ် (2.17), "a small village near the river": the clause ရှိသော comes before the noun and says where the village is. ဆေးခန်း တစ်ခု ရှိသော ရွာ (2.28) is "a village with a clinic". ဖြစ် never says where.
Time. နေ့တိုင်း (2.20) is "every day", တိုင်း (tuing:) being the "every" of the Declaration's လူတိုင်း. ခြောက်နှစ် ကြာပြီးနောက် (2.26) is "after six years had passed": ကြာ is "last, take time" and ပြီးနောက် is "after it was finished".
Means. ငွေဖြင့် (2.24) is "with money": ဖြင့် is the literary "with, by means of", and it is the same word as the ending of အဖြစ်ဖြင့် in Section F.

Reading the romanisation: the transcription is MLCTS, which writes the letters rather than the sounds. A syllable with no mark is low in tone, a colon (:) after it marks the high tone, a dot (.) marks the creaky tone, and a final c, t, p or k is a catch in the throat. The respellings in brackets are for English readers and do not show tone.
ဖြစ် (hprac) — IPA: /pʰjɪʔ/ — Aspirated p with a y after it. The medial ြ is not an r, and the word is not "hpr-". The final c is a catch in the throat. ဟုတ် (huik) — IPA: /hoʊʔ/ — Begins with h. The vowel is "o", and the final k is a catch in the throat. နိုင် (nuing) — IPA: /nàɪɴ/ — The vowel is like "eye", nasalised, and the final ng is not said as a full "ng". ဦး (u:) — IPA: /ʔú/ — The long u with a high tone, and a slight catch before it. ကျော် (kyau) — IPA: /tɕɔ̀/ — ကျ is said between English "ch" and "j". The vowel is the "aw" of "law", with a low tone. မြင့် (mrang.) — IPA: /mjɪ̰ɴ/ — The spelling mr is said "my". The creaky tone is marked by the dot, with a nasal vowel. ကျွန်တော် (kywantau) — IPA: /tɕənɔ̀/ — A man's word for "I". The middle syllable is short and weak. ဆရာဝန် (hca.rawan) — IPA: /sʰəjàwʊ̀ɴ/ — The first syllable is short and weak, and the ရ is said "y". လှ (hla.) — IPA: /l̥a̰/ — A voiceless l: the l is breathed out before the vowel, with a creaky tone. ဆင်းရဲ (hcang:re:) — IPA: /sʰɪ́ɴjɛ́/ — Both syllables have the high tone. ရဲ begins with y. ကြာ (kra) — IPA: /tɕà/ — ကြ is said between English "ch" and "j". အဖြစ် (a.hprac) — IPA: /ʔəpʰjɪʔ/ — The first syllable is short and weak, a creaky "a" before ဖြစ်.
