Welcome to Lesson 44 of your Czech language journey!
This lesson teaches the Czech word for "if." For a real, open condition, something that may well happen, Czech says jestli: Jestli chceš, pomůžu ti. "If you like, I'll help you." For an unreal or imagined condition, something that is not so or probably will not be, Czech says kdyby: Kdybych měl čas, šel bych s tebou. "If I had time, I'd go with you."
English marks this difference with tenses alone ("if I have" against "if I had"). Czech marks it with two different conjunctions. Jestli takes the ordinary indicative: present, past or future. Kdyby works only with the conditional mood, and it carries the conditional endings itself: kdybych "if I", kdybys "if you", kdyby "if he, she, it, they", kdybychom "if we", kdybyste "if you (plural or formal)." The verb after it is the l-participle: kdybych měl, kdybys věděla. The main clause then takes the conditional with bych, bys, by: šel bych "I would go."
Czech has several more words for "if." Jestliže is the formal, written form of jestli. Pokud is neutral and common in instructions and rules: Pokud nemáte jízdenku, musíte zaplatit pokutu. "If you don't have a ticket, you must pay a fine." Když, which you met in Lesson 43 as "when," also means "if" in everyday speech. The formal suffix -li is attached to the verb: Máš-li čas, přijď. "If you have time, come." Finally, jestli also means "whether" in indirect questions: Nevím, jestli přijde. "I don't know if (whether) he'll come."
Etymology: jestli is the old verb form jest "is" with the question particle -li, literally "is it (so)?". The same -li still turns any verb into a condition: máš-li, chceš-li. Kdyby joins kdy (when, Lesson 43) to the conditional by: "when it would be." Jestliže adds the particle -že to jestli.
Orthography: jestli and jestliže are written as one word. The suffix -li is joined by a hyphen: máš-li, můžete-li. Kdybych and kdybychom are also one word, never kdyby jsem or kdyby jsme.
Frequently Asked Question: What does "jestli" mean in Czech?
Jestli means "if" for a real condition (Jestli bude pršet, zůstaneme doma. "If it rains, we'll stay at home.") and "whether" in indirect questions (Nevím, jestli přijde. "I don't know whether he'll come."). For an unreal or hypothetical "if," Czech uses kdyby with the conditional: Kdybych to věděl, přišel bych. "If I knew that, I would come."
Key Takeaways:
- Jestli = "if" for a real condition, with the indicative; also "whether." - Kdyby = "if" for an unreal condition, with the conditional: kdybych, kdybys, kdyby, kdybychom, kdybyste, kdyby. - After jestli, a future event takes the Czech future tense: Jestli bude pršet… "If it rains…" - Jestliže is formal, pokud neutral, když everyday; -li is formal and joined by a hyphen. - The comma always sets off the if-clause: Jestli chceš, pomůžu ti.

The words for "if":
jestli /ˈjɛstlɪ/ – if (real condition), whether
jestliže /ˈjɛstlɪʒɛ/ – if (formal)
pokud /ˈpɔkut/ – if, as long as
když /ɡdɪʃ/ – if, when (everyday)
-li /lɪ/ – if (formal suffix): máš-li /ˈmaːʃlɪ/
The forms of kdyby:
kdybych /ˈɡdɪbɪx/ – if I
kdybys /ˈɡdɪbɪs/ – if you (singular, informal)
kdyby /ˈɡdɪbɪ/ – if he, she, it; if they
kdybychom /ˈɡdɪbɪxɔm/ – if we
kdybyste /ˈɡdɪbɪstɛ/ – if you (plural or formal)
The conditional auxiliary in the main clause:
bych /bɪx/, bys /bɪs/, by /bɪ/, bychom /ˈbɪxɔm/, byste /ˈbɪstɛ/, by /bɪ/ – would
Sounds to watch:
- kd- in kdyby is pronounced [ɡd], as in kdy (Lesson 43): the voiced d voices the k. - y after d and b is a short [ɪ] and leaves the consonant hard: kdyby [ˈɡdɪbɪ], not [ˈɡɟɪbɪ]. - ch at the end of kdybych is [x], as in Scottish "loch." - In fast speech jestli is often heard as [ˈjɛslɪ], with the t dropped. Always write the t. - Stress falls on the first syllable: JEST-li, KDY-by-chom, PO-kud. The suffix -li is unstressed and leans on the verb: MÁŠ-li.

These are the grammar rules for jestli and kdyby in Czech:
1. Real conditions: jestli + indicative
A real condition is one that may well come true. Czech uses jestli with the ordinary tenses, exactly as in a main clause:
- Present: Jestli chceš, pomůžu ti. "If you like, I'll help you." - Future: Jestli bude zítra pršet, zůstaneme doma. "If it rains tomorrow, we'll stay at home." - Past: Jestli to řekl, tak to platí. "If he said it, then it holds."
Note the future in 44.6. English says "if it rains tomorrow" with a present tense; Czech uses the real future, bude pršet, because the rain is in the future. With a perfective verb the present form is already future: Jestli přijde, … "If he comes, …"
2. The other words for a real "if"
- jestliže – formal and written: contracts, rules, textbooks (44.13). The Slovník spisovné češtiny marks jestli as the colloquial partner of jestliže. - pokud – neutral, very common in instructions and notices (44.9); it can also mean "as long as": pokud to půjde "as long as it's possible." - když – everyday speech (44.7; Lesson 43, Když poběžíš, stihneš ho). - -li – formal suffix joined to the verb with a hyphen; the verb stands first: Máš-li čas, přijď. Můžete-li, zavolejte. "If you can, call."
3. Unreal conditions: kdyby + conditional
An unreal condition imagines something that is not so, or is unlikely. Czech uses kdyby, which carries the person ending of the conditional, followed by the l-participle:
- kdybych měl, kdybys měl, kdyby měl, kdybychom měli, kdybyste měli, kdyby měli
The main clause takes the conditional: l-participle + bych, bys, by, bychom, byste, by.
- Kdybych měl čas, šel bych s tebou do kina. "If I had time, I'd go with you." - Co bys dělal, kdybys vyhrál milion? "What would you do if you won a million?"
The l-participle agrees with the subject: kdybys věděl (to a man), kdybys věděla (to a woman), kdybychom měli (we). With the reflexive se and si, the 2SG form contracts: kdyby ses, kdyby sis (not kdybys se).
4. The past conditional
For a condition in the past that did not happen, standard Czech adds byl (byla, byli…):
- Kdybych to byl věděl, byl bych přišel dřív. "If I had known, I would have come earlier."
This form is correct but bookish. In everyday speech Czechs use the simple conditional and let the context show the past: Kdybych to věděl, přišel bych dřív. Both are understood the same way.
5. Kdyby on its own
- A wish: Kdybych jen věděl! "If only I knew!" (44.2) - A polite request: Kdybyste byl tak laskav… "Would you be so kind…" (44.15). In polite address (vykání) to one person the participle stays singular: byl, byla. - "What if…?": A co kdyby vlak nejel? "And what if the train didn't run?" - A possible future event, "should…": Kdyby se něco změnilo, napíšu ti. "Should anything change, I'll write to you."
6. Jestli meaning "whether"
In indirect yes/no questions jestli means "whether" (44.3, 44.12): Nevím, jestli přijde. The more formal word is zda: Nevím, zda přijde. As with kdy in Lesson 43, the tense of the direct question is kept: Přijde? → Nevím, jestli přijde.
7. Punctuation
The if-clause is always set off by a comma, before or after the main clause: Jestli chceš, pomůžu ti. Pomůžu ti, jestli chceš.
Common Mistakes English Speakers Make:
- Using jestli for an unreal condition: Jestli bych měl čas, šel bych → Kdybych měl čas, šel bych. - Writing kdyby with jsem: kdyby jsem měl → kdybych měl; kdyby jsme → kdybychom. (Kdybysme is heard in speech but is not standard.) - Putting the present for a future event, English style: Jestli zítra prší, zůstaneme doma → Jestli bude zítra pršet, zůstaneme doma. - Adding "would" to the if-clause as well: the conditional belongs once in each clause, kdybych in one and bych in the other. Kdybych bych měl is wrong. - Dropping the hyphen in -li: mášli → máš-li. - Leaving out the comma before or after the if-clause.
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
Frequency and register
Jestli and když are the everyday words for "if"; jestliže and the -li suffix belong to writing, law and formal speech; pokud is neutral and is the usual word on signs, in rules and in instructions (Pokud nemáte jízdenku…). Kdyby is frequent in every register, because Czech has no other way to make an unreal condition.
Kdyby, chyby
Czech has a short saying against idle "what ifs": Kdyby, chyby, and its longer form Kdyby nebylo kdyby, nebyly by chyby (also heard as nebylo by chyby). It means that it is pointless to speculate about what would have happened under conditions that were not met. English says "If ifs and ands were pots and pans"; French says "avec des si, on mettrait Paris en bouteille" ("with ifs you could put Paris in a bottle"). A cruder Czech version about fish and ponds is also common in speech.
Jestli as a warning
In colloquial speech jestli can stand alone as a threat or a worry: Jestli neposlechneš! "If you don't listen (you'll see)!" Jen jestli to stihne! "I wonder if he'll make it!"
Politeness
The conditional softens requests: Kdybyste byl tak laskav… "If you would be so kind…", Mohl byste mi pomoct? "Could you help me?", Chtěl bych kávu. "I would like a coffee." A Czech shop assistant hears Chtěl bych… far more often than Chci…, and you should use it too.

The refrain a lásky kdybych neměl "and if I had no love" is one of the best-known unreal conditions in the Czech language. The IPA gives a modern reading, and the English translation is that of the King James Version.

Part F-D: Grammar and Literary Commentary
The passage is built on a chain of unreal conditions, each with kdybych and the l-participle: kdybych neměl, kdybych měl. The translators also use the bare bych as a conjunction, "though I, if I" (Bych jazyky lidskými mluvil…), as the King James Version uses "though." This older use survives only in the concessive byť "even though"; modern Czech says kdybych. Bychť adds the old emphatic particle -ť ("indeed"). A modern translation (the Czech Ecumenical Translation) begins Kdybych mluvil jazyky lidskými i andělskými, ale lásku bych neměl…
Lásky kdybych neměl shows the old genitive of negation: after a negated verb the object stands in the genitive (lásky, not lásku). The same rule appeared in Lesson 42, Nebudeš dělati žádného díla. Modern Czech uses the accusative: kdybych neměl lásku. In the same way došel takes the genitive: všelikého umění došel "attained to all knowledge."
The word order is free and rhetorical. The object is placed before kdybych (lásky kdybych neměl, lásky pak kdybych neměl) to put the stress on love, and the adjectives follow their nouns (jazyky lidskými, měď zvučící, zvonec znějící). Že bych hory přenášel is a clause of result with the conditional: "so that I could move mountains."
Učiněn jsem is a passive, "I am made, I have become"; učinit is the elevated "to make" you met in Lesson 42. Zvučící and znějící are present active participles used as adjectives ("sounding," "ringing"). Všecka is the old form of všechna.
The Kralice Bible was translated from the original languages by the Unity of the Brethren (Jednota bratrská) and printed at Kralice nad Oslavou in Moravia.

Part D: Grammar Notes for Genre Section
This dialogue sets real and unreal conditions side by side and uses every word for "if" in the lesson.
Jestli + indicative (real condition): 44.16 (jestli bude hezky), 44.23 (jestli si to nerozmyslím), 44.24 (jestli máš hlad). In 44.16 and 44.23 the condition is in the future, so Czech uses the future: bude, and the perfective nerozmyslím.
Jestli meaning "whether": 44.17 (nevím, jestli bude hezky) and 44.26 (zeptej se mámy, jestli nám půjčí deštník). Zeptat se takes the genitive of the person asked: mámy.
Když and pokud (real condition): 44.18 (když bude pršet), 44.20 and 44.30 (pokud vlak nepojede, pokud zaspíš).
Kdyby + conditional (unreal condition): 44.21 (kdybych měl auto, bylo by to jednodušší), 44.22, 44.27. Each main clause has its own conditional: bylo by, mohl by ses, nepotřebovali bychom.
Kdyby ses: 44.22. The 2SG kdybys and the reflexive se merge into kdyby ses; in the main clause by + se gives by ses in the same way (mohl by ses naučit).
Co kdyby…? "What if…?": 44.19. Kdybys věděla…! as an exclamation: 44.25. Kdyby for a possible future event, "should…": 44.29, with an ordinary future in the main clause (napíšu ti).
Pronoun objects: 44.27, nepotřebovali bychom ho. Ho (deštník, masculine) is the accusative object of potřebovat. Unlike the Kralice text (lásky kdybych neměl), modern Czech keeps the accusative after a negative verb.
The saying Kdyby, chyby (44.28; 44.5) closes Martin's chain of worries.
Weather: bude hezky "it will be nice" uses the adverb hezky, not the adjective: weather expressions in Czech are impersonal (je hezky, bylo hezky, bude hezky).
Jet and pojedeme: the future of jet is pojedu, pojedeš, pojede, pojedeme (44.16, 44.20, 44.30), as with poběžíš in Lesson 43.
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
kd- and the forms of kdyby
As in kdy (Lesson 43), kd- is pronounced [ɡd]: kdyby [ˈɡdɪbɪ], kdybych [ˈɡdɪbɪx], kdybychom [ˈɡdɪbɪxɔm], kdybyste [ˈɡdɪbɪstɛ]. The y after d and b is a short [ɪ] and keeps the consonants hard. Write kdybych and kdybychom as single words.
jestli
Jestli [ˈjɛstlɪ] is often reduced to [ˈjɛslɪ] in rapid speech. In writing the t is never dropped.
The hyphen in -li
The conditional suffix -li is joined to the verb with a hyphen and does not take the stress: máš-li [ˈmaːʃlɪ], chceš-li, můžete-li.
Voicing assimilation
The preposition v becomes [f] before a voiceless consonant: v sobotu [f ˈsɔbɔtu], v tašce [f ˈtaʃtsɛ]; before a vowel or a voiced consonant it stays [v]: v lednici [v ˈlɛdɲɪtsɪ]. Inside words: lidskými [ˈlɪtskiːmɪ] (d becomes [t] before s), předpověď [ˈpr̝̊ɛtpɔvjɛc], hezky [ˈɦɛskɪ], všecka [ˈfʃɛtska], deštník [ˈdɛʃcɲiːk].
Final devoicing
A voiced consonant at the end of a word becomes voiceless: pokud [ˈpɔkut], hlad [ɦlat], rád [raːt], laskav [ˈlaskaf], dřív [dr̝iːf], jez [jɛs], bez [bɛs], měď [mɲɛc], přijď [pr̝̊ɪjc].
ř
The letter ř (přijde, předpověď, řídit, jaře, zavřel, dřív) is the trilled fricative [r̝]. After a voiceless consonant it is voiceless: přijde [ˈpr̝̊ɪjdɛ], přenášel [ˈpr̝̊ɛnaːʃɛl]. After a voiced d it stays voiced: dřív [dr̝iːf].
ě
After d, t, n, the letter ě softens the consonant: věděl [ˈvjɛɟɛl], andělskými [ˈaɲɟɛlskiːmɪ], něco [ˈɲɛtsɔ]. After v and p it adds a [j]: věděla [ˈvjɛɟɛla], předpověď. After m it gives [mɲɛ]: měl [mɲɛl], změnilo [ˈzmɲɛɲɪlɔ], umění [ˈumɲɛɲiː].
Syllabic r
In pršet [ˈpr̩ʃɛt] and nepršelo [ˈnɛpr̩ʃɛlɔ], r carries the syllable by itself.
Long vowels
The čárka and kroužek mark length: pomůžu, nevím, máš, zůstaneme, jízdenku, vyhrál, dnů, řídit, přihlásím, napíšu. Hold every long vowel about twice as long as a short one.
Czech quotation marks
Czech opens a quotation low and closes it high: „Kdyby, chyby!“ The question mark or exclamation mark stays inside the closing mark.
