Lesson 45 Czech: A Latinum Institute Modern Language Course

čas - Time

Introduction

Welcome to Lesson 45 of your Czech language journey!

This lesson teaches the Czech word for "time": čas. Nemám čas. "I don't have time." Čas letí. "Time flies." It is the word for time as something you have, spend, lose and measure: free time, time to go, time for a coffee, the time of departure on a timetable.

English "time" covers several ideas that Czech keeps apart. Čas is time in general and the time you have available. A period or an age is doba: v dnešní době "nowadays, in this day and age." When you ask "What time is it?" you ask about hours, not about čas: Kolik je hodin? (literally "How many hours is it?"). And "time" meaning an occasion is not čas at all: "the first time" is poprvé, "three times" is třikrát. A short while or a moment is chvíle. Choosing among these is the main skill in this lesson.

Grammar: čas is a masculine inanimate noun of the hard type, declined like hrad (castle): čas, času, času, čas, čase, čase/času, časem; plural časy, časů, časům, časy, časy, časech, časy. Quantity words take the genitive: dost času "enough time", kolik času? "how much time?", hodně času "a lot of time". The instrumental časem is an adverb, "in time, eventually," and včas (v + čas) means "on time, in time."

Etymology: čas is an old Slavic word, shared with Slovak čas, Polish czas and Slovene čas. In Russian the same word, час, has narrowed to mean "hour." From čas Czech builds časový (of time, temporal), časopis (a magazine, literally "time-writing"), včas (on time) and nadčasový (timeless). In Czech grammar čas is also the word for "tense": minulý čas "the past tense", budoucí čas "the future tense."

Orthography: čas begins with č, pronounced like English "ch" in "church." Write včas as one word when it means "on time": Přišel včas. "He came on time." With an adjective in between, the preposition stands apart: v pravý čas "at the right time."

Frequently Asked Question: What does "čas" mean in Czech?

Čas means "time." It is the everyday word for time in general and for time available: Máš čas? "Do you have time?" Nemám čas. "I have no time." For "What time is it?" Czech asks Kolik je hodin?; for "the first time" it says poprvé; for a period or age it uses doba.

Key Takeaways:

- Čas = time in general, time available: Máš čas? Čas jsou peníze. - After quantity words čas goes into the genitive: dost času, málo času, kolik času. - Včas = on time; časem = in time, eventually; za starých časů = in the old days. - "What time is it?" = Kolik je hodin?; "the first time" = poprvé; "three times" = třikrát. - Doba is a period or age: v dnešní době, od té doby "since then."

Pronunciation Guide

The forms of čas:

čas /tʃas/ – time (nominative, accusative)

času /ˈtʃasu/ – of time (genitive), to time (dative)

čase /ˈtʃasɛ/ – in time (locative); also the vocative

časem /ˈtʃasɛm/ – with time (instrumental); in time, eventually

časy /ˈtʃasɪ/ – times (plural)

časů /ˈtʃasuː/ – of times (genitive plural)

Related words:

včas /ftʃas/ – on time, in time

časový /ˈtʃasɔviː/ – of time, temporal

doba /ˈdɔba/ – period, age

chvíle /ˈxviːlɛ/ – while, moment

poprvé /ˈpɔpr̩vɛː/ – for the first time

Sounds to watch:

- č is [tʃ], as in English "church." It never sounds like English "k." - a in čas is a short, open [a], as in British "cup" said with the mouth more open. Do not lengthen it: čas is short, čáp (stork) is long. - s in čas stays [s] in every form, even between vowels: času [ˈtʃasu], never [ˈtʃazu]. - In včas the v becomes [f] before the voiceless č: [ftʃas]. - Stress falls on the first syllable: ČA-su, ČA-sem, ČA-so-vý, VČAS. In ve volném čase the stress of the preposition joins the next word: VE-vol-ném ČA-se.

Section D: Grammar Explanation

These are the grammar rules for čas in Czech:

1. Gender and declension

Čas is masculine inanimate and follows the hard pattern hrad. The Internetová jazyková příručka of the Czech Language Institute gives:

- Singular: čas (nom.), času (gen.), času (dat.), čas (acc.), čase (voc.), čase or času (loc.), časem (ins.) - Plural: časy (nom.), časů (gen.), časům (dat.), časy (acc.), časy (voc.), časech (loc.), časy (ins.)

Because it is inanimate, the accusative is the same as the nominative: Čas letí (nom.), Nemám čas (acc.).

2. The locative: čase or času

Both forms are standard. In expressions of time the usual form is čase: ve volném čase "in (one's) free time", v krátkém čase "in a short time." The Internetová jazyková příručka notes that času is commoner where time is the topic rather than the setting: mluvit o času "to talk about time." For "recently" Czech does not use čas at all: v poslední době.

3. Čas after quantity words: the genitive

Words of quantity take the genitive: dost času (45.6), kolik času (45.9), hodně času (45.13), víc času (45.15), málo času "little time." After the negative nemám, modern Czech uses the accusative: Nemám čas. (Nemám času is old-fashioned.)

4. Mít čas and mít čas na

- Máš čas? "Are you free?" Nemám čas. "I'm busy." - mít čas na + accusative: Nemám čas na hlouposti. "I've no time for nonsense." Na to nemám čas. "I've no time for that." - mít čas + infinitive: Nemám čas vařit. "I've no time to cook."

5. Je čas and je nejvyšší čas

Je čas + infinitive means "it's time to…": Je čas jít. (45.4). Je nejvyšší čas "it's high time" (45.10) uses the superlative of vysoký. The phrase je na čase means the same: Je na čase, abychom šli. "It's about time we went."

6. Adverbs and fixed phrases built on čas

- včas – on time, in time (45.7): Vlak přijel včas. "The train arrived on time." - časem – in time, eventually (45.12) - za starých časů – in the old days (45.11), with za + genitive plural - čas od času – from time to time - mezitím – meanwhile (from mezi tím, "between that"; not built on čas, but often needed with it)

7. Čas is not every English "time"

- Clock time: Kolik je hodin? "What time is it?" Je pět hodin. "It's five o'clock." V kolik hodin? "At what time?" - An occasion: poprvé "the first time", podruhé "the second time", naposledy "the last time"; jednou, dvakrát, třikrát "once, twice, three times." - A period or age: doba: v dnešní době "nowadays", od té doby "since then" (45.13). - A moment: chvíle: za chvíli "in a moment." - A good time: Užili jsme si to. "We had a good time." (Czech does not say měli jsme dobrý čas.)

8. Čas meaning "tense"

In grammar, čas is "tense": přítomný čas (present), minulý čas (past), budoucí čas (future). Czech grammars use these terms, and so will your Czech teacher.

Common Mistakes English Speakers Make:

- Asking the time with čas: Jaký je čas? → Kolik je hodin? - Using čas for an occasion: první čas → poprvé; tři časy → třikrát. - Translating "have a good time" word for word: mít dobrý čas → užít si to, mít se dobře. - Forgetting the genitive after quantity words: dost čas → dost času; kolik čas → kolik času. - Writing včas as two words when it means "on time": Přišel v čas. → Přišel včas. - Using the singular verb in the proverb: Czech says Čas jsou peníze, with the verb agreeing with peníze (plural).

Section E: Cultural Context

Frequency and register

Čas is one of the most frequent nouns in Czech and is neutral in every register, from a text message (Máš čas?) to a philosophy lecture.

Proverbs and sayings

- Čas jsou peníze. "Time is money." Note the plural verb jsou: in a sentence of the type "X is Y," Czech lets the verb agree with the plural noun peníze. Slovak says the same, Čas sú peniaze. - Čas zahojí všechny rány. "Time heals all wounds." It is also heard as Čas (všechny) rány hojí. - Čas letí. "Time flies." - Všechno má svůj čas. "Everything has its time," an echo of the Bible verse in Section F.

Everyday expressions

- volný čas – free time, leisure (45.8); volnočasové aktivity "leisure activities" - zabíjet čas – to kill time; ztrácet čas – to waste time - letní čas – summer time (daylight saving time); the clocks change on the last Sunday of March and of October - středoevropský čas (SEČ) – Central European Time, the time zone of the Czech Republic - časopis – a magazine; jízdní řád – a timetable, where čas odjezdu is the departure time

Punctuality

Czechs value včas. For a meeting, a lesson or a concert, being five minutes early is normal and being late without a message is impolite. Trains and trams are expected to run včas, and a delay (zpoždění, Lesson 43) is announced to the minute.

Old Czech time

For centuries, Bohemia counted the hours of the day from sunset, not from midnight. This "Old Czech time" (staročeský čas) can still be read on the outer ring of the Prague astronomical clock, the subject of the description below.

Section F: Literary Citation

The opening of the third chapter of Ecclesiastes, Ecclesiastes 3:1–4 (Kazatel), in the Bible of Kralice (Bible kralická, 1579–1594; one-volume edition 1613), in the text given by Bibleserver (BKR) and Bible Hub (Czech BKR). The word čas is repeated again and again, each time followed by a noun in the genitive: čas rození "a time of being born," čas smíchu "a time of laughter." The IPA gives a modern reading, and the English translation is that of the King James Version.

Part F-D: Grammar and Literary Commentary

The passage is a list of pairs, and every pair is built the same way: čas + a noun in the genitive. Where English says "a time to be born," with an infinitive, Czech says čas rození, "a time of being born." Most of these nouns are verbal nouns in -ní or -tí, formed from verbs: rodit → rození, umírat → umírání, sázet → sázení, hojit → hojení, stavět → stavení. They are neuter and end in -í in every singular case except the instrumental, so the genitive looks like the nominative. Pláč, smích and smutek are ordinary masculine nouns, and their genitives show it: pláče, smíchu, smutku. Modern Czech still forms "a time for…" the same way: čas odjezdu "the departure time", čas oběda "lunchtime."

The first verse has an ellipsis: má is said once and serves both halves. Všeliká věc má jistý čas, a každé předsevzetí (má) pod nebem svou chvíli. Chvíle, "a while, a moment," is the word you met in Section D; here it is a synonym of čas, as "season" and "time" are in the English.

Several words are older than modern Czech. Všeliký "every kind of" is today všechen or každý. Jest is the old full form of je. Mordování "killing" comes from the German loanword mordovat and is now archaic or slangy; modern Czech says zabíjení. Proskakování "leaping" stands where the King James Version has "dance"; the Czech Ecumenical Translation has čas poskakovat, with an infinitive, which modern Czech also allows: je čas plakat i čas smát se "a time to weep and a time to laugh." Což vsazeno bývá, "what is wont to be planted," uses bývat, the iterative of být, for something that happens regularly.

The word order of the second verse, with jest at the head, is the solemn biblical order. The Czech Ecumenical Translation (1979) begins the chapter Všechno má určenou chvíli a veškeré dění pod nebem svůj čas.

The Kralice Bible was translated from the original languages by the Unity of the Brethren (Jednota bratrská) and printed at Kralice nad Oslavou in Moravia.

Part D: Grammar Notes for Genre Section

This description uses čas in the nominative and the accusative, and sets it beside the other Czech words for time.

Čas as subject (nominative): 45.22 (Staročeský čas počítal…), 45.27 (čas lidského života je krátký). Čas as object (accusative): 45.18 (měří čas), 45.20, 45.21, 45.30 (Kdo má čas…). Because čas is inanimate, the two forms are identical; only the sentence tells you which is which.

Adjectives with čas: 45.21 lists four kinds of time, each with a masculine adjective in -ý: středoevropský, staročeský, babylonský, hvězdný čas. The adjective agrees with čas in gender, number and case.

Hodiny, a plural noun: the word for a clock, hodiny, is plural in form even for one clock (45.25, Když hodiny odbíjejí, with a plural verb). Přesýpací hodiny (45.26, 45.27) is an hourglass, literally "pouring-through clock." The same word in the plural also means "hours" (45.22, počítal hodiny); the singular hodina is "an hour" (45.24, každou hodinu, accusative of time).

Doba and chvíle: od té doby "since then" (45.18; 45.13); jen krátkou chvíli "only a short while" (45.29), an accusative of duration, like každou hodinu.

Numbers and the genitive: šest set let (45.18). From five upwards the counted noun stands in the genitive plural: set from sto, and let, the genitive plural used with rok (one year, but pět let). In měří čas už více než šest set let the present tense with už describes something that began in the past and still goes on, where English says "has been measuring."

Ve dne: an old locative of den (the Internetová jazyková příručka gives ve dne beside dni, dnu), kept in the fixed phrase ve dne "in the daytime" (opposite: v noci "at night").

Kdo…, neměl by…: 45.30 joins a general relative clause (kdo má čas "whoever has time") to the conditional of mít, neměl by "ought not to." The conditional softens advice, as in Lesson 44.

Perfective for a repeated scene: in 45.25 and 45.28 the perfective forms objeví and zakokrhá describe what happens each time the clock strikes. In a description of a regular sequence, Czech often uses the perfective present form for each completed step.

Pronunciation and Orthography Notes

č

The letter č is always [tʃ]: čas, času, včas, časem. Do not confuse it with ch, which is [x] (chvíle, chodím), or with c, which is [ts]: ciferník [ˈtsɪfɛrɲiːk], slunce [ˈsluntsɛ], více [ˈviːtsɛ].

Voicing assimilation

Czech consonant clusters take their voicing from the last consonant. In včas the v becomes [f] before č: [ftʃas]. In vsazeno [ˈfsazɛnɔ], všichni [ˈfʃɪxɲɪ], všechny [ˈfʃɛxnɪ] and Všeliká [ˈfʃɛlɪkaː], v becomes [f] before s and š. In lidského [ˈlɪtskɛːɦɔ], d becomes [t] before s; in předsevzetí [ˈpr̝̊ɛtsɛvzɛciː], d becomes [t] before s. The preposition v is [f] before a voiceless consonant (v Praze [f ˈprazɛ], v podobě [f ˈpɔdɔbjɛ]) and [v] before a vowel or a voiced consonant (v osm, v okénkách, v roce). Z is [s] in z Kadaně and z nejstarších; nad is [nat] before ciferníkem; od is [ɔt] before té.

Final devoicing

A voiced consonant at the end of a word becomes voiceless: rád [raːt], teď [tɛc], přijď [pr̝̊ɪjc], hned [ɦnɛt], provaz [ˈprɔvas], což [tsɔʃ], už [uʃ], než [nɛʃ], hodinář [ˈɦɔɟɪnaːr̝̊].

ř

The letter ř (přijď, přírody, měří, středoevropský, čtyři, přesýpací) is the trilled fricative [r̝]. After a voiceless consonant, and at the end of a word, it is voiceless: přírody [ˈpr̝̊iːrɔdɪ], hodinář [ˈɦɔɟɪnaːr̝̊]. Between vowels or after a voiced consonant it is voiced: měří [ˈmɲɛr̝iː], čtyři [ˈtʃtɪr̝ɪ], boření [ˈbɔr̝ɛɲiː].

ě

After d, t, n, the letter ě softens the consonant: světě [ˈsvjɛcɛ] (t), hodně [ˈɦɔdɲɛ], Staroměstské. After b, p, v it adds a [j]: věži [ˈvjɛʒɪ], podobě [ˈpɔdɔbjɛ], věc [vjɛts], hvězdný [ˈɦvjɛzdniː]. After m it gives [mɲɛ]: měl [mɲɛl], měří [ˈmɲɛr̝iː], neměl [ˈnɛmɲɛl].

Syllabic r and m

In smrt [smr̩t], trvá [ˈtr̩vaː], zakokrhá [ˈzakɔkr̩ɦaː], poprvé [ˈpɔpr̩vɛː] and čtrnáct [ˈtʃtr̩naːtst], r carries the syllable by itself. In osm [ˈɔsm̩], the final m is syllabic in careful speech.

Long vowels

The čárka and kroužek mark length: nemám, máš, letí, jít, peníze, začíná, přírody, zahojí, rány, klavír, časů, západu, půlnoci, schází, okénkách. Length is part of the word: čas is short, and its genitive plural časů has a long ů. Hold every long vowel about twice as long as a short one.

Numbers in dates

A year is written in figures and read as hundreds: 1410 is čtrnáct set deset ("fourteen hundred ten"), or more formally tisíc čtyři sta deset. After v roce the year stays in the nominative.
