(She is thinking about her future)، وهو «ظنّ» و«اعتقد» حين يبدي رأياً (I think it is late)، وهو «رأى» حين نسأل عن الرأي (What do you think?).
(I think that it is late = I think it is late). والثاني think about / think of بعده اسم أو فعل مع -ing، ومعناه «أفكّر في…» (I am thinking about my family؛ We are thinking of buying a house). والثالث العبارات الثابتة والأفعال المركّبة: think so (أظن ذلك)، think over (فكّر مليّاً)، think up (ابتكر)، think twice (فكّر مرتين قبل أن تقرر)، think of (اهتدى إلى، تذكّر).
I think in my family. I think about my family أو I think of my family. ويقع خطأ ثانٍ مع النفي: العربية تقول «أظن أنه لا يأتي»، والإنجليزية الأكثر طبيعية تنقل النفي إلى think: I don't think he is coming.
- think + جملة = أظن أن…: I think it is late - think about / think of + اسم أو -ing = أفكّر في…: I am thinking about my family؛ We are thinking of buying a house - ✗ I think in my family ← ✓ I think about my family (لا نقول think in) - النفي ينتقل إلى think: I don't think he is at home (هذه الصيغة الأطبع) - think – thought – thought (شاذ): ✗ thinked ← ✓ thought - think so / don't think so = أظن ذلك / لا أظن ذلك - النطق: [θɪŋk]، والحرف الأول هو «ث»، لا س ولا ت
The verb think covers four jobs that Arabic shares among fakkara, zanna, i'taqada and ra'ā: mental activity (think about), opinion (I think that…), asking for an opinion (What do you think?) and a family of fixed phrases (think so, think over, think up, think twice, think of). It is irregular (think – thought – thought). This lesson trains the reader to choose between think about and think of, never to say think in, to move the negative onto think (I don't think he is here), to keep opinion in the simple present and the activity in the continuous, and to say the first sound as the Arabic letter thā'.

١. تصريف think (شاذ)
- think (المصدر والمضارع للمتكلم والمخاطب والجمع): I think، you think، we think، they think - thinks (المضارع للغائب المفرد): She thinks a lot (53.5) - thinking (التصريف المستمر): I am thinking about my family (53.7) - thought [θɔːt] (الماضي والتصريف الثالث): He thought for a long time (53.11)، I have thought about it - ✗ thinked ← ✓ thought.
- I think (that) it is late (53.6). I thought the exam was easy (53.13) - في الرأي نستعمل المضارع البسيط، لا المستمر: ✗ I am thinking it is late ← ✓ I think it is late. I'm thinking we should wait لاقتراح غير نهائي، ولكن تحفظ القاعدة أولاً - think so / don't think so (53.1، 53.4): so تعوّض عن الجملة كلها. ✗ I think it ← ✓ I think so
٣. النفي: I don't think + جملة مثبتة
- لا أظن أنه في البيت = I don't think he is at home (53.9) - ننقل النفي إلى think، ويبقى الفعل الثاني مثبتاً. I think he is not at home I don't think he is at home، وهي الأكثر طبيعية - ✗ I don't think he won't come ← ✓ I don't think he will come (لا نكرر النفي) - I think not (أظن لا) صيغة رسمية قديمة؛ والأشيع I don't think so (53.4)
٤. الأسئلة مع think
- Do you think …؟ Do you think that people think differently…؟ Where do you think he is؟ (53.10). ✗ Where do you think is he؟ - What do you think؟ I think… - What do you think of / about this film؟ ويصح of وabout هنا
٥. think about و think of
I am thinking about my family (53.7)، I have been thinking about your question (53.14) - think of (What do you think of this film؟ (I can't think of his name؛ He could not think of the right words) - بعد about و of يأتي الاسم أو -ing: thinking of buying (53.12)، thinking about moving. ✗ I think to buy - ✗ think in ← ✓ think about / think of
- المضارع المستمر: I am thinking about… I have been thinking about your question all day (53.14) = ما زلت أفكّر منذ ساعات
- think over = فكّر مليّاً، تأمل: Think it over. وإذا كان المفعول ضميراً توسّط الفعل وحرفه: think it over، لا think over it - think up = ابتكر، اخترع: He thought up a plan - think twice = فكّر جيداً قبل أن تقرر - think back = تذكّر الماضي: Think back to your first day - think ahead = فكّر في المستقبل
٨. thought اسماً
- a thought = فكرة، خاطر: I had a thought.
- ✗ I think in my family ← ✓ I think about my family (أفكّر في = think about) - ✗ I think to buy a car ← ✓ I am thinking of buying a car - ✗ I thinked about it ← ✓ I thought about it - ✗ I am thinking he is right ← ✓ I think he is right (الرأي بالمضارع البسيط) - ✗ Where do you think is he؟ ← ✓ Where do you think he is؟ - ✗ I don't think he won't come ← ✓ I don't think he will come - ✗ I think it (جواباً على السؤال) ← ✓ I think so - ✗ I sink so / I tink so ← ✓ I think so (الحرف الأول هو «ث»)

I think it's a good idea It's a good idea مباشرة. - I don't think so طريقة مهذبة للرفض أو الاعتراض، وهي ألطف من No. وI'll think about it وLet me think about it I think. - I was thinking (بالماضي المستمر) تُستعمل لاقتراح مؤدب: I was thinking we could have dinner together («خطر لي أن نتعشى معاً»). - A penny for your thoughts وthink outside the box = فكّر خارج المألوف. I think, therefore I am أما الإنجليزية فتقول think في الحالتين، وتضيف كلمات مثل really وstrongly لتقوية الرأي، وjust وkind of لتخفيفه: I really think، I strongly think، I just think.

Why لماذا, then إذن, 'tis - none إنه ليس شيئاً to - you لك; for لأن there - is لا يوجد nothing شيء either إما good جيداً or أو bad سيئاً, but إلا thinking التفكير makes يجعل it - so إياه كذلك
— William Shakespeare, Hamlet (c. 1600), Act 2, Scene 2
"Why, then, 'tis none to you; for there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so."
كان قد قال "Denmark's a prison" («الدنمارك سجن»)، ثم وصف العالم بأنه سجن كبير تُعدّ الدنمارك من أسوأ زنازينه، فأجابه روزنكرانتس: "We think not so, my lord" («لا نظن ذلك يا مولاي»). ويتابع بعدها: "to me it is a prison" («وبالنسبة إليّ هي سجن»). وفي جواب روزنكرانتس يظهر الفعل think نفسه بمعنى إبداء الرأي (We think not so)، وهو قريب من I don't think so (53.4).
- 'tis none = it is none: اختصار قديم لـ it is، خرج من الاستعمال العادي. وفي الإنجليزية الحديثة نقول it is not a prison to you. - either good or bad: either … or - We think not so We don't think so. - makes it so: so وهي الصيغة نفسها في I think so (53.1): so تقوم مقام ما سبق.

وتفرّق بين thought وحدها («فكّر») و thought about / of («فكّر في»). - الفكر المنقول (53.17، 53.29): He thought: "…". - think about (53.18، 53.22، 53.23): بعد about اسم (the salary) أو ما الموصولة (what you really want). What are you thinking about؟ (53.19) - thinking of + -ing (53.20): I'm thinking of moving. Do you think I should go؟ - I think / I don't think (53.21): ننقل النفي إلى think: I don't think you should decide today، لا I think you shouldn't decide. - think it over (53.22): الضمير it يتوسّط الفعل وحرفه. وبعد told him تأتي to think. - thought + جملة بالماضي (53.25): I thought I was happy. وفي الكلام المنقول عن النفس نستعمل he said to himself. (53.26): could not think of the right words. - think up (53.27): فعل مركّب يعني الابتكار، وبعده المفعول: thought up a plan. ويمكن أن يتوسط الضمير: think it up. - We think you will like… - was no longer thinking / was thinking (53.30): وno longer تأتي بعد was وقبل التصريف المستمر.

- thinks – [θɪŋks]، thinking – [ˈθɪŋkɪŋ]، thinker – [ˈθɪŋkə]. - think وsink وthing: think [θɪŋk]، sink [sɪŋk]، thing [θɪŋ]. تمرين: think / sink، thing / sing، thank [θæŋk] / think. - I think so – [aɪ ˈθɪŋk ˈsəʊ]: النبر على think وعلى so، وتخف I. - I think في وسط الجملة تخف كثيراً: It's late, I think – [ɪts ˈleɪt, aɪ θɪŋk]. - What do you think?
