كلمة two هي العدد «اثنان» (يُكتب 2 بالأرقام التي تستعملها الإنجليزية، وهو ٢ في الأرقام الهندية المستعملة في العربية). وتأتي قبل الاسم مباشرة مثل الصفة: two cups، two brothers، two hours. وفي الإنجليزية لا تتغير two بحسب جنس الاسم: two brothers (أخوان)، two sisters (أختان)، وللعربية «اثنان» و«اثنتان».
وفي الكلمة نقطة واحدة تُوقع المتعلم العربي في الخطأ أكثر من غيرها: المثنى. ففي العربية نقول كتاب ← كتابان، سنة ← سنتان، ولا نحتاج إلى «اثنين» بعد الاسم. أما الإنجليزية فليس فيها مثنى: فيها مفرد (one book) وجمع (two books، three books). ولذلك يأتي الاسم بعد two بصيغة الجمع دائماً: two books (✗ two book). ويأتي الفعل بعده بصيغة الجمع أيضاً: Two cups are on the table.
والنقطة الثانية هي الكتابة والنطق. تُكتب الكلمة بحرف w، لكن هذا الحرف لا يُنطق: [tuː] أي «تو». وثلاث كلمات تُنطق نطقاً واحداً وتُكتب كتابة مختلفة: two (اثنان)، وto (إلى)، وtoo (أيضاً، أو أكثر من اللازم). وهذه من أكثر الأخطاء الإملائية بين المتعلمين: ✗ I have to books ← ✓ I have two books.
وتُستعمل two في الوقت (two o'clock)، والعمر (She is two)، والمدة (two hours)، والكمية (two kilos). وتقول الإنجليزية «اثنان منا» بـ the two of us، و«كلاهما» بـ both، و«مرتين» بـ twice، و«الثاني» بـ second (وليس twoth). وتجد هذه الكلمات كلها في الدرس.
والكلمة من الإنجليزية القديمة twā (للمؤنث والمحايد) وtwēgen (للمذكر)، وهي من أصل جرماني مشترك مع الألمانية zwei والهولندية twee، وأصله القديم قريب من اللاتينية duo واليونانية dýo. وبقي حرف w ظاهراً في كلمات من الأصل نفسه: twice (مرتين)، twin (توأم)، twelve (اثنا عشر)، twenty (عشرون)، between (بين)، twilight (الشفق، أي نصف الضوء). وأما اللاتينية duo فتجدها في dual (ثنائي) وduet (ثنائي غنائي) وduplicate (نسخة مطابقة)، والسابقة bi- في bilingual (ثنائي اللغة) وbicycle (دراجة بعجلتين).
النقاط الرئيسية:
- two + اسم جمع: two books (✗ two book). ليس في الإنجليزية مثنى، فلا يكفي أن نقول book للدلالة على اثنين - العمر: She is two / She is two years old (✗ She has two years). والصفة قبل الاسم بالمفرد: a two-year-old girl (✗ a two-years-old girl) - المدة: The journey takes two hours، وقبل الاسم: a two-hour journey (✗ a two-hours journey) - the two of us / two of my friends / both: two of we ✗، two of us ✓ - twice = مرتين، second = الثاني (✗ twoth)، two hundred بلا s (✗ two hundreds) - between للاثنين، وamong لأكثر من اثنين: between the two offers - الكتابة: two (✗ tow، ✗ tu)، وtwenty-two بشرطة. والنطق [tuː] بلا w: ✗ [twuː] - to / too / two ثلاث كلمات بنطق واحد: [tuː] (وتُنطق to غالباً [tə] في الكلام السريع)
The word two is the number between one and three, and it sits before its noun like an adjective. English has no dual, so the noun after two is always plural (two books), and the verb is plural too (two cups are). This lesson trains the reader to say two books and not two book, She is two years old and not She has two years, a two-year-old girl and not a two-years-old girl, the two of us and not two of we, twice, second and two hundred without a final -s, to write two and not to or too when the number is meant, and to say the word as [tuː] with the w silent.

هذه هي القواعد النحوية لكلمة two:
١. two + اسم جمع (لا مثنى في الإنجليزية)
- two + اسم جمع: two cups (58.1)، two brothers (58.2)، two sisters (58.3)، two tickets (58.6)، two eggs (58.7). وتقابل كل منها مثنى عربياً: كوبان، أخوان، أختان، تذكرتان، بيضتان - ✗ two cup ← ✓ two cups. فالمتعلم العربي يميل إلى حذف s لأن العربية تكتفي بالمثنى. وليس في الإنجليزية إلا المفرد والجمع - الفعل بعد two يكون جمعاً: There are two eggs (58.7)، The two boys are tired (58.9). ✗ There is two eggs - two لا تتغير مع الجنس: two brothers (58.2) / two sisters (58.3)، بينما العربية «اثنان / اثنتان» - الجمع الشاذ يبقى شاذاً: two men، two women، two children، two feet، two teeth. ✗ two mans - بعد two نستعمل of مع الاسم المحدد أو الضمير: two of my friends (58.10)، two of them. ✗ two my friends - the two = الاثنان المعروفان: the two boys (58.9)، the two offers (58.15). و the تسبق two لا العكس: ✗ two the boys
٢. العمر والمدة والوقت
- العمر: My daughter is two (58.12) = ابنتي عمرها سنتان. والصيغة الكاملة She is two years old. ✗ She has two years (تركيب منقول من «عندها سنتان» أو من لغات أخرى) - قبل الاسم تكون العبارة مفردة بشرطة: a two-year-old girl (✗ a two-years-old girl)، a two-hour journey (58.13) (✗ a two-hours journey). فالعبارة كلها صفة، والصفة لا تأخذ s - المدة بعد الفعل: for two hours (58.8)، The journey takes two hours. وهنا يعود الجمع: hours. ✗ I waited two hour - الساعة: It's two o'clock (58.4)، at two، half past two، quarter to two. ✗ It's the two - in two days = بعد يومين من الآن، وfor two days = مدة يومين، وtwo days ago = قبل يومين. ✗ before two days - الكسر: two-thirds = ثلثان، two and a half = اثنان ونصف: two-thirds of the class are girls
٣. the two of us / both / between
- the two of us / you / them = نحن الاثنان / أنتما / هما: The two of us talked for two hours. بعد of يأتي الضمير المفعول: the two of us (✗ the two of we) - both = كلا / كلتا: let's ask them both (58.14) = فلنسأل كليهما. وboth تأتي مع الجمع: Both boys are tired. وهي تقابل «the two» في كثير من الجمل: the two boys ≈ both boys - both … and … = كلاهما: Both Ali and Salma are tired. وeither / neither تأخذان مفرداً: Either of the two is fine. Neither of the two is ready - between للاثنين، وamong لأكثر من اثنين: between the two offers (58.15)، among the three offers. ✗ among the two offers - a pair of لشيئين متلازمين: a pair of shoes، a pair of glasses. وa couple of = اثنان أو بضعة (كلام غير رسمي): a couple of minutes
٤. twice وsecond وdouble
- twice = مرتين: She has read the letter twice (58.15). وبعدها one time = once، two times = twice، three times (لا thrice في الكلام). ✗ two time - twice a week / once or twice / every two days / every other day = مرتين في الأسبوع / مرة أو مرتين / كل يومين / يوماً بعد يوم - second = الثاني (الصفة الترتيبية): the second day. ✗ the twoth day. وهي ترمز 2nd: May the 2nd = the second of May - second اسم أيضاً: ثانية من الزمن. Just a second = لحظة. وsecond language = لغة ثانية - double = ضعف: double the price = ضعف السعر، وdouble room = غرفة بسرير مزدوج. وtwin = توأم: twin room = غرفة بسريرين منفصلين
٥. الأعداد المركّبة وhundred
- twelve [twelv] (✗ twelf) وtwenty [ˈtwenti] (✗ tweny). وتبدأ كل منهما بـ tw - الأعداد المركّبة بشرطة: twenty-two (58.28) (✗ twenty two، ✗ twentytwo). وكذلك thirty-two وforty-two - two hundred / two thousand بلا s: two hundred pounds (✗ two hundreds pounds). وتأتي s فقط حين لا يوجد عدد قبلها: hundreds of people = مئات الناس - العدد مع الكمية الكبيرة يعامل غالباً معاملة المفرد: Two hours is a long time. Two thousand pounds is a lot of money - العمليات: Two plus two is / equals / makes four (58.5). Two minus one is one. Two times two is four. Two divided by two is one - الرقم في رقم الهاتف: 22 تُقرأ في البريطانية double two، وفي الأمريكية two two
٦. الكتابة والنطق (to / too / two)
- two [tuː] وto (حرف جر وأداة المصدر) وtoo (أيضاً، أو بالغ) تُنطق كلها [tuː] حين تكون قوية: ✗ I have to books ← ✓ I have two books. ✗ I want a coffee two ← ✓ too - ✗ tow (حبل السحب)، ✗ tu، ✗ tue. والـ w حاضرة في الكتابة وغائبة في النطق - جمع two نفسها (twos) نادر، والمألوف منه in twos = اثنين اثنين: They came in twos
٧. عبارات وأمثال
- Two heads are better than one (58.14) = التشاور بين اثنين أنفع من تفكير واحد - Two's company, three's a crowd: اثنان رفقة وثلاثة ازدحام - It takes two to tango: لا بد من طرفين، أي كلاهما مسؤول - Kill two birds with one stone = ضرب عصفورين بحجر واحد - Put two and two together = استنتج من القرائن - Two wrongs don't make a right = الخطأ لا يُصلحه خطأ آخر - in two minds = متردد (وفي الأمريكية of two minds) - two-faced = ذو وجهين، أي منافق

- A table for two, please عبارة يقولها الزبون عند دخول المطعم، وتُقال أيضاً A table for two? من النادل. وفي الأمريكية يسمعون كثيراً Party of two. وعند الحجز تقول: I'd like to book a table for two for eight o'clock. - A double room or a twin room؟ سؤال في الفنادق. فالـ double غرفة بسرير مزدوج واحد، والـ twin غرفة بسريرين منفصلين. وfor two nights = لمدة ليلتين. - Two-for-one عرض تجاري: تدفع ثمن واحد وتأخذ اثنين. وفي المطاعم أيضاً two for one. وتقابله buy one, get one free (اشترِ واحداً وخذ الثاني مجاناً). - Two-factor authentication (2FA) هي «المصادقة بخطوتين» على الحسابات الإلكترونية: كلمة سر ثم رمز. وتسمع أيضاً two-step verification. - Two-way تعني «باتجاهين»: a two-way street (شارع باتجاهين)، a two-way radio. وكذلك a two-door car = سيارة بابين، بالمفرد قبل الاسم. - Two-nil / two-all في أخبار كرة القدم البريطانية: The match ended two-nil (2-0)، وTwo-all (2-2). وفي الأمريكية يقولون two to nothing وtwo to two. - A two-pound coin عملة معدنية بريطانية من فئة جنيهين إسترلينيين. وتقول two pounds أو £2، وتقرأ £2.50 «two pounds fifty». - Two's company, three's a crowd مثل يقال حين يكون وجود شخص ثالث غير مرغوب فيه، ويقال غالباً بدعابة عن عاشقين. - Just a second / Wait a second = لحظة. وهي عبارة يومية، ومعها Just a moment وhang on. - Second thoughts = إعادة نظر: I'm having second thoughts. وsecond to none = لا يضاهيه أحد. وsecond-hand = مستعمل، وهي قريبة من used في الدرس السابق. - Twice a day (مرتين في اليوم) عبارة تقرؤها على علب الدواء. وعبارة two times a day مفهومة وصحيحة، لكن twice أكثر طبيعية. - كلمات من الأصل نفسه: twin، twice، twelve، twenty، twilight، between، twosome (ثنائي)، وbilingual (ثنائي اللغة) وbicycle وbinoculars (منظار بعينين) وdual وduet وduo. - The two of us تقال حين يتحدث اثنان عن نفسيهما، وتبدو أكثر حميمية من we both. أما us two وwe two فنادرة وشاعرية. - Number two تعني «الثاني في الترتيب»، وفي العمل «الرجل الثاني»: She is the director's number two. - Two or three = اثنان أو ثلاثة، أي قليل. وتقول a couple of حين لا يهم العدد الدقيق، وهي في الكلام غير الرسمي لا تعني دائماً اثنين بالضبط.

هذه الأسطر الأربعة افتتاح مسرحية روميو وجولييت لشكسبير. وهي المقطع الأول من قصيدة من أربعة عشر سطراً (سونيتة) يلقيها «الجوقة» (the Chorus) قبل رفع الستار، وقافيتها ABAB CDCD EFEF GG. والكلمة الأولى في المسرحية كلها هي Two. والسونيتة بعد ذلك تعدّ: أسرتان في السطر الأول، ثم «عدوّان» (these two foes) في السطر الخامس، ثم «زوج من العشاق» (a pair of star-crossed lovers) في السطر السادس، ثم في السطر الثاني عشر تقول إن حكاية العداوة والموت هي الآن «تجارة الساعتين على خشبة مسرحنا» (the two hours' traffic of our stage). فالعدد اثنان هو بنية المسرحية: بيتان، عاشقان، ساعتان. وفي السطر الأول يفيد العدد أن النزاع بين طرفين متساويين في المقام (both alike in dignity). والفعل break في السطر الثالث جاء بلا s لأن الاسم الجمع (two households) هو فاعله، ومعناه «تنفجر»، وهو من الاستعمال الشعري القديم. وكلمة mutiny في عصر شكسبير تعني الشغب والفتنة بين الناس، وليست المعنى البحري الحديث «تمرد البحارة». وكلمة civil تعني «أهلي، يخص المواطنين»، لا «مهذّب» كما في الإنجليزية الحديثة. وقورن النص بنص مكتبة فولجر شكسبير وبنص موقع Open Source Shakespeare، والألفاظ متفقة إلا في الإملاء والترقيم: star-crossed عند فولجر وstar-cross'd عند الآخر، وnaught وnought، وDoth وDo في السطر الثامن، وتوجد الأقواس حول السطر الثاني عند فولجر وحده. واعتمدنا نص فولجر في الأسطر المقتبسة.
- Two households: two + اسم جمع، بلا فعل في الجملة الأولى، فهي عبارة اسمية تفتتح السونيتة. وhousehold هنا أسرة كبيرة بخدمها وأتباعها (house + hold)، وجمعها households. - both alike in dignity: both توكيد للاثنين، وalike صفة بمعنى «متشابهتان»، وin dignity أي «في المقام والمنزلة». وفي الإنجليزية الحديثة dignity تعني غالباً «الكرامة» أو «الوقار»، أما هنا فالمقام الاجتماعي (rank). - (In fair Verona, where we lay our scene): جملة اعتراضية بين قوسين. وfair هنا «جميلة» (قديم)، وlay our scene أي «نضع مشهدنا» أو «نقيم مسرحنا». وwe هو فريق التمثيل. - From ancient grudge break to new mutiny: فاعل break هو households. وصيغة break بلا s لأن الفاعل جمع. وfrom … to … تعني «من … إلى …». وgrudge [ɡrʌdʒ] حقد قديم، وهو اسم. - Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean: makes + مفعول + صفة، أي «يجعل الأيدي غير طاهرة». وwhere هنا تفيد الموضع المجازي «وفي هذه الفتنة». وcivil مكررة للتأكيد والجرس. - the two hours' traffic of our stage (السطر 12): hours' جمع مملوك، أي الفاصلة العليا بعد الـ s. وtraffic في إنجليزية ذلك العصر هي «تجارة، انشغال»، لا «الازدحام المروري» كما اليوم. - ملاحظة للنطق: dignity [ˈdɪɡnəti]، Verona [vəˈrəʊnə]، mutiny [ˈmjuːtəni]، unclean [ʌnˈkliːn]، grudge [ɡrʌdʒ]. والحرف g في dignity يُنطق [ɡ] مثل «ج» القاهرية، ولا يُحذف قبل n.
