How do you say this word in English؟ ، How are you؟ . فهي تقابل أيضاً «كم» حين تأتي قبل صفة أو ظرف: how old (كم عمر)، how far (كم تبعد)، how long (كم من الوقت)، how often (كم مرة)، how much (كم / بكم)، how many (كم عدداً).
How do you say it؟ How did you learn؟ How is your mother؟ (✗ How you say it؟ ✗ How you are؟). I don't know how he opened the door (✗ I don't know how did he open the door). How beautiful the city looks! (✗ How beautiful does the city look!).
فينقلها ✗ How do you call this؟ What do you call this؟ أو How do you say this؟ ولا نقول ✗ How is your name؟ بل What is your name؟ وفي العمر نقول How old are you؟ (✗ How many years do you have؟).
؟)، How come…؟ ؟ وهي عامية ولا قلب بعدها)، How do you do؟ How do you take your tea؟
وتنتمي إلى عائلة كلمات الاستفهام التي تبدأ بـ wh في الكتابة: who (من)، what (ماذا)، where (أين)، when (متى)، why (لماذا)، which (أيّ).
How do you spell it؟ ✗ How you spell it؟ ✗ How do you spelling it؟ - How are you؟ و How is your mother؟ ✗ How you are؟ ✗ How is you؟ - how + صفة / ظرف للسؤال عن الدرجة: how old, how tall, how far, how long, how often, how quickly. ✗ How many years do you have؟ ← ✓ How old are you؟ - how much + اسم لا يعد أو ثمن، وhow many + جمع معدود: How much is this؟ How many brothers do you have؟ (✗ how many brother، ✗ how many money) - السؤال غير المباشر بلا قلب: I don't know how he opened the door. ✗ I don't know how did he open the door - how to + مصدر: She showed me how to make coffee. ✗ She showed me how making coffee - التعجب: How + صفة + فاعل + فعل: How beautiful the city looks! و What a + اسم: What a beautiful city! ✗ How a beautiful city! - How about + اسم أو فعل بـ -ing = ما رأيك: How about a walk؟ How about going for a walk؟ ✗ How about to go - How come + جملة خبرية = لماذا: How come you are still here؟ ✗ How come are you here؟ - اسم الشيء بـ what: What do you call this؟ What is your name؟ (✗ How do you call this؟ ✗ How is your name؟) - نطق how: [haʊ] مثل «هاو» الإنجليزية، لا [hoʊ] ولا [huː] (who)
The word how asks about manner, condition and degree. It stands before an auxiliary and the subject in a direct question (How do you say it?), but before the subject and verb alone in an indirect question and in an exclamation (I don't know how he did it. How kind of you!). With an adjective or adverb it asks for the degree: how old, how far, how long, how often, how much, how many. It does not ask for the name of a thing: that is what. This lesson trains the reader to say How is your mother? and not How you are?, What is your name? and not How is your name?, How old are you? and not How many years do you have?, I don't know how he did it and not I don't know how did he do it, How about a walk?, How come you are still here?, and to say the word as [haʊ] with the h sounded.

- how + فعل to be + فاعل: How are you؟ (59.1)، How is your mother؟ (59.2). ✗ How you are؟ ✗ How is you؟ ✗ How your mother is؟ - how + فعل مساعد (do / does / did) + فاعل + فعل أصلي: How do you say (59.6)، How did you learn (59.10). والفعل الأصلي بصيغة المصدر بلا s ولا ed: ✗ How do you says؟ ✗ How did you learned؟ - جواب How are you؟ I'm fine, thank you. And you؟ وليس مطلوباً أن تروي حالك بالتفصيل - How is the weather؟ و What is the weather like؟ وهنا لا نجمع الاثنين: ✗ How is the weather like؟ - How was…؟ للماضي: How was your weekend؟ How was the film؟ - How do you do؟ تحية رسمية قديمة عند أول تعارف، وجوابها How do you do؟ نفسها، لا I'm fine. وليست مثل How are you؟
- how + صفة + فعل to be + فاعل: How old is your brother؟ (59.3). وكذلك how tall، how big، how heavy. ✗ How old your brother is؟ وفي سؤال العمر لا نقول ✗ How many years do you have؟ - how long للمدة: How long does the lesson take؟ How long is the road؟ - how far للمسافة: How far is the station from here؟ (59.9). It's five minutes on foot. أو It's two kilometres. - how often للتكرار: How often do you visit your grandmother؟ (59.8). والجواب once a week، twice a month، every day، never. وبعد how often يأتي الفعل المساعد: ✗ How often you visit؟ - how + ظرف: How quickly did you learn؟ (59.10)، how well، how fast. How quickly did you learn it؟ / How did you learn it so quickly؟ - so + ظرف في الجواب أو الجملة الخبرية: so quickly (59.10)، so well. ✗ so much quickly
٣. how much / how many
- how many + اسم جمع معدود: How many brothers do you have؟ (59.5). ✗ How many brother؟ ✗ How many peoples؟ (people جمع بلا s) - how much + اسم لا يعد: How much water؟ How much time؟ How much money؟ ✗ How many money؟ - how much وحدها للثمن: How much is this؟ How much does it cost؟ والجواب It's ten pounds. ولا نقول ✗ How many is this؟ - الفعل بعد how much مفرد، وبعد how many جمع: How much is it؟ How many are there؟
٤. السؤال غير المباشر وhow to
I don't know how he opened the door (59.11). ✗ I don't know how did he open the door. ولا نستعمل do ولا علامة الاستفهام - والعبارة نفسها بعد فعل المعرفة والسؤال: I know how، I don't know how، Can you tell me how، She asked me how، I wonder how، Do you know how… ؟ Can you tell me how far it is؟ (✗ Can you tell me how far is it؟) - how + to + مصدر: She showed me how to make Arabic coffee (59.12). ✗ She showed me how making. ✗ She showed me how for make - ونفس القاعدة مع I'll show you how to turn it on، Do you know how to swim؟، I learned how to drive.
٥. التعجب بـ how
How beautiful the city looks (59.13). وليس في الجملة قلب: ✗ How beautiful does the city look! - How + صفة + of + ضمير: How kind of you! How lucky we are! How strange it is! What a beautiful city! ✗ How a beautiful city! ✗ What beautiful the city is! How nice! How wonderful! How strange!
٦. How about / How come
- How about + اسم أو فعل بـ -ing: How about a walk after dinner؟ (59.14)، How about going for a walk؟ ✗ How about to go؟ ؟» - How about you؟ I'm fine. How about you؟ ويقال أيضاً And you؟ How come you are still here؟ (59.15). ✗ How come are you here؟ ✗ How come do you stay؟
٧. how وwhat وhow do you take / like
- نسأل عن اسم الشيء بـ what: What do you call this؟ What is your name؟ (✗ How do you call this؟ ✗ How is your name؟). ونسأل عن طريقة قول الكلمة بـ how: How do you say this word in English؟ (59.6)، How do you spell it؟ How do you pronounce it؟ - How do you take your tea؟ With milk and no sugar. How do you like your coffee؟ How do you like London؟ - لا نستعمل how بعد the way: ✗ I like the way how he talks. ← ✓ I like the way he talks / I like how he talks. فاستعمل إحداهما فقط - في السرد الأدبي قد تقوم how مقام that: She told me how he had left (= أخبرتني أنه رحل).
- however = لكن / مهما: However hard I try, I cannot open it. However, we decided to stay. - somehow = بطريقة ما: Somehow he opened the door. anyhow = على أي حال. know-how = خبرة عملية - how-to صفة: a how-to video (فيديو تعليمي)، a how-to guide (دليل إرشادي)
- ✗ How you are؟ ← ✓ How are you؟ - ✗ How is your name؟ ← ✓ What is your name؟ - ✗ How do you call this؟ ← ✓ What do you call this؟ - ✗ How many years do you have؟ ← ✓ How old are you؟ - ✗ How many money do you have؟ ← ✓ How much money do you have؟ - ✗ How many brother do you have؟ ← ✓ How many brothers do you have؟ - ✗ I don't know how did he open the door ← ✓ I don't know how he opened the door - ✗ She showed me how making coffee ← ✓ She showed me how to make coffee - ✗ How a beautiful city! ← ✓ What a beautiful city! / How beautiful the city is! - ✗ How about to go؟ ← ✓ How about going؟ - ✗ How come are you here؟ ← ✓ How come you are here؟ - ✗ I like the way how he talks ← ✓ I like the way he talks - ✗ [hoʊ] أو [huː] ← ✓ [haʊ]
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
- How are you؟ فمن يسألك في المتجر أو في المصعد How are you؟ And you؟ أو Good, thank you. - How do you do؟ وجوابها بالعبارة نفسها: How do you do؟ Nice to meet you. - How's it going؟ / How are things؟ / How's life؟ أو Pretty good. أو Can't complain. وتُسمع How's it going؟ - How can I help you؟ How may I help you؟ - How much is it؟ - How was your weekend؟ Great, thanks. We went to the beach. - How about…؟ How about a coffee؟ - How come؟ How come you didn't call؟ - How dare you! - How about that! - Howdy تحية أمريكية ريفية غير رسمية، مختصرة من How do you do؟ - How-to على الإنترنت: عدد هائل من المقاطع التعليمية بعنوان «how to…» How to tie a tie وHow to change a tyre. - How do you say… in English؟ أو We say…. How do you spell it؟

— Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Sonnets from the Portuguese, Sonnet 43 (published 1850), lines 1–4
"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being and ideal Grace."
- How do I love thee؟ How do I love you؟ - Let me count the ways: let + مفعول + مصدر بلا to. ومثله Let me help you، Let me see. - I love thee to the depth and breadth and height: to - My soul can reach: جملة وصفية بلا أداة وصل (the depth … that my soul can reach)، وحذف that جائز في الإنجليزية حين يكون الموصول مفعولاً: the depth my soul can reach. ونقول مثله The book I read. - when feeling out of sight / For the ends of Being and ideal Grace: when feeling = when (it is) feeling، حذف الفاعل والفعل المساعد بعد when، وهو أسلوب شعري. - ملاحظة للنطق: how [haʊ]، love [lʌv]، thee [ðiː]، breadth [bredθ]، height [haɪt]، depth [depθ]، ideal [aɪˈdɪəl]، Grace [ɡreɪs].
