"that" শব্দটির ব্যবহার বাঙালি শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয়গুলি:
১. "that" এর দুটি প্রধান ব্যবহার: -
দূরের কোনো কিছু নির্দেশ করার জন্য (ওই/সেই) -
দুটি বাক্যাংশকে সংযুক্ত করার জন্য (যে)
২. দূরবর্তী নির্দেশক হিসেবে: -
বাংলায় যেমন "ওই" বা "সেই" বলি -
উদাহরণ: "That house" = "ওই বাড়িটি" -
"this" এর বিপরীত (কাছের জিনিস বোঝাতে "this" ব্যবহার করি)
৩. সংযোজক হিসেবে: -
বাংলায় "যে" শব্দের মতো -
দুটি বাক্যকে জুড়তে ব্যবহার করা হয় -
উদাহরণ: "I know that he is right" = "আমি জানি যে সে ঠিক আছে"
৪. Relative Pronoun হিসেবে: -
বাক্যে বিশেষ্য পদকে বর্ণনা করার জন্য -
"যে/যেটি" এর সমতুল্য -
উদাহরণ: "The book that is on the table" = "যে বইটি টেবিলের উপরে আছে"

বাংলা এবং ইংরেজি ভাষায় "that" এর ব্যবহারের সাংস্কৃতিক দিক:
১. বাংলা ভাষায় আমরা প্রায়ই "এই", "ওই", "সেই" ইত্যাদি শব্দ ব্যবহার করি। কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে শুধু "this" এবং "that" আছে।
২. বাংলায় আমরা প্রায়ই "যে" শব্দটি বাদ দিয়ে কথা বলি, কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে "that" বাদ দেওয়া সবসময় সম্ভব নয়।
৩. বাঙালি সংস্কৃতিতে দূরত্ব বোঝানোর জন্য তিনটি স্তর আছে (এই/ওই/সেই), কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে দুটি (this/that)।

এই উদাহরণে "that" একটি demonstrative pronoun হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে। এটি পূর্বের একটি ঘটনা বা সিদ্ধান্তকে নির্দেশ করে, যা বাংলায় "সেই" বা "ওই" এর সমতুল্য।
