"এবং" শব্দের ব্যবহার বোঝার জন্য বাঙালি শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয়গুলি:
১. "and" হল ইংরেজিতে একটি সংযোজক অব্যয় (Conjunction)। বাংলায় এর প্রতিশব্দ হল "এবং" বা "ও"।
২. "and" এর ব্যবহার: -
দুটি বা তার বেশি বস্তু বা ব্যক্তি যুক্ত করতে (tea and coffee) -
দুটি ক্রিয়া যুক্ত করতে (work and play) -
দুটি বিশেষণ যুক্ত করতে (tall and strong)
৩. "and" ব্যবহারের সময় মনে রাখার বিষয়: -
বাংলায় যেমন "এবং" শব্দটি বাক্যের শেষে ব্যবহার করা যায়, ইংরেজিতে "and" সর্বদা দুটি শব্দের মাঝখানে থাকে -
"and" এর আগে কমা (,) ব্যবহার করা যেতে পারে যখন তিন বা তার বেশি জিনিস তালিকাভুক্ত করা হয়
৪. বাক্য গঠনে "and" এর প্রভাব: -
যখন "and" দিয়ে দুটি বিষয় যুক্ত করা হয়, ক্রিয়াপদ বহুবচনে হয় (The boy and the girl play) -
তবে যদি একটি ধারণা প্রকাশ করে, তবে একবচন হতে পারে (Fish and chips is my favorite dish)

বাংলা এবং ইংরেজি ভাষায় "and/এবং" এর ব্যবহারের মধ্যে সাংস্কৃতিক পার্থক্য রয়েছে। বাংলা ভাষায় আমরা প্রায়ই "ও" বা "-ও" ব্যবহার করি, যা ইংরেজির "and" এর মতো একই অর্থ প্রকাশ করে। যেমন:
"রাম ও শ্যাম" = "Ram and Shyam" "চা-খাবার" = "Tea and snacks"
বাঙালি সংস্কৃতিতে যুগ্ম শব্দের (যেমন: মা-বাবা, ভাই-বোন) ব্যবহার বেশি। ইংরেজিতে এগুলি সবসময় "and" দিয়ে যুক্ত করতে হয়।

রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের এই উক্তিটি মানব মনের দ্বৈত প্রকৃতি নিয়ে। "and" এর ব্যবহার এখানে দুটি বিপরীত অনুভূতির মধ্যে সম্পর্ক স্থাপন করছে।
উদ্ধৃতিতে "and" এর ব্যবহার: ১. দুটি বিপরীত ধারণা যুক্ত করছে (hope-fear) ২. একটি সরল বাক্য গঠন করছে ৩. সমান গুরুত্বের দুটি বিষয় যুক্ত করছে

যখন দুটি বিষয় একসঙ্গে কাজ করে, তখন বহুবচন ক্রিয়াপদ ব্যবহার করা হয় -
যখন দুটি ধারণা একটি একক ভাব প্রকাশ করে, তখন একবচন ক্রিয়াপদ ব্যবহার করা হয়
