than একটি সংযোজক (conjunction), যার কাজ তুলনা। এটি comparative রূপের (taller, cheaper, more difficult) পরে বসে এবং বলে কার সঙ্গে তুলনা করা হচ্ছে: Rina is taller than Mina (রিনা মিনার চেয়ে লম্বা), I like tea more than coffee (আমি কফির চেয়ে চা বেশি পছন্দ করি)।
বাংলায় তুলনা হয় «চেয়ে» দিয়ে। ঘরোয়া কথায় «থেকে» বা «চাইতে» চলে, আর লেখার ভাষায় «অপেক্ষা»: «সে আমার চেয়ে লম্বা», «সে আমার থেকে লম্বা», «সে আমার অপেক্ষা লম্বা»। ইংরেজিতে এর জায়গায় একটাই শব্দ: than। দুই ভাষার তফাত দুটি, আর দুটিতেই বাংলাভাষীরা বেশি ভুল করেন।
- শব্দের ক্রম উল্টো। বাংলায় তুলনার জিনিস আগে, «চেয়ে» পরে: «মিনার চেয়ে লম্বা»। ইংরেজিতে আগে বিশেষণ, তারপর than, তারপর তুলনার জিনিস: taller than Mina। - বিশেষণের রূপ বদলায়। বাংলায় বিশেষণ একই থাকে («লম্বা»), ইচ্ছে হলে «আরও» বসে। ইংরেজিতে comparative রূপ লাগে: tall – taller, beautiful – more beautiful। তাই ✗ Rina is tall than Mina।
than এর আরও কিছু কাজ আছে, যেগুলোর জন্য বাংলায় আলাদা কথা লাগে:
- সংখ্যার আগে: more than fifty people (পঞ্চাশজনের বেশি লোক), less than ten minutes (দশ মিনিটের কম)। - rather than: বরং, …না করে: Rather than wait, we walked (অপেক্ষা না করে আমরা হেঁটে গেলাম)। - would rather … than: …এর চেয়ে বরং …: I would rather walk than wait (অপেক্ষা করার চেয়ে আমি বরং হেঁটে যাব)। - other than: ছাড়া: nothing other than rice (ভাত ছাড়া আর কিছু নয়)। - no sooner … than: …তে না …তেই: No sooner had I sat down than the phone rang (আমি বসতে না বসতেই ফোন বাজল)।
শব্দটির ইতিহাসে একটি মজার কথা: than আর then (তখন, তারপর) একই শব্দ। দুটিই এসেছে পুরোনো ইংরেজি þanne, þonne, þænne থেকে, যার অর্থ «তখন»। আনুমানিক ১৭০০ সালের কাছাকাছি পর্যন্ত দুটি অর্থ একই বানানে লেখা হত; তারপর তুলনার অর্থের জন্য than আর সময়ের অর্থের জন্য then আলাদা হয়ে যায়। ধারণা করা হয়, «A is bigger, then B» («A বড়; তারপর B…») গড়ন থেকেই তুলনার অর্থ এসেছে। ওলন্দাজ (Dutch) ভাষায় আজও dan দুই অর্থেই চলে। সেই পুরোনো মিলের কারণেই আজও ইংরেজিভাষীরাও এই দুটি গুলিয়ে ফেলেন: ✗ taller then me ← ✓ taller than me।
উচ্চারণে একটি সতর্কতা: than এর শুরুর th হল [ð]। জিভের ডগা উপরের আর নিচের দাঁতের মাঝখানে রেখে স্বর দিয়ে বলতে হয়। বাংলায় এই ধ্বনি নেই; «দ» বা «ধ» বললে শব্দটি ইংরেজিভাষীর কানে আলাদা শোনায়। স্বরটি [æ], বাংলা «অ্যা» (যেমন «ব্যাঙ» এর অ্যা)।

The English word than is the conjunction of comparison. Bengali puts the thing compared first and the postposition চেয়ে after it («মিনার চেয়ে লম্বা»); English puts the comparative adjective first, then than, then the thing compared (taller than Mina). This lesson trains the reader to form the comparative (taller, more beautiful, better), to place than correctly, to choose than me or than I am, to use more than and less than with numbers, and to use the fixed patterns would rather … than, rather than, other than and no sooner … than.

১. than কোথায় বসে
- বাংলা ক্রম: তুলনার জিনিস + চেয়ে + বিশেষণ: «মিনার চেয়ে লম্বা»। ইংরেজি ক্রম: বিশেষণ + than + তুলনার জিনিস: taller than Mina (50.1) - than সাধারণত comparative রূপের পরে আসে: taller than (50.1), cheaper than (50.2), faster than (50.5), better than (50.7), more than (50.8), less than (50.11) - তুলনার জিনিস দুটি একই ধরনের হতে হয়: Dhaka is bigger than Sylhet (50.3), শহরের সঙ্গে শহর। ✗ The weather in Dhaka is hotter than Sylhet ← ✓ hotter than in Sylhet বা hotter than Sylhet's। বাংলাতেও ঠিক একই: «সিলেটের চেয়ে», «সিলেটের আবহাওয়ার চেয়ে»। - সংক্ষেপে উত্তর দেওয়ার সময় than ছাড়া বাক্য চলে, যদি কার সঙ্গে তুলনা তা সবার জানা থাকে: Rina is taller। কিন্তু than বাদ দিয়ে তুলনার জিনিস বসানো যায় না: ✗ Rina is taller Mina
২. comparative রূপ কীভাবে হয়
- ছোট (এক syllable এর) বিশেষণে -er: tall – taller (50.1), cheap – cheaper (50.2), fast – faster (50.5), hard – harder - শেষে একটি স্বর আর একটি ব্যঞ্জন থাকলে ব্যঞ্জন দ্বিগুণ: big – bigger (50.3), hot – hotter (50.4), thin – thinner - শেষে -y থাকলে y বদলে i: easy – easier (50.6), happy – happier, early – earlier - শেষে -e থাকলে শুধু -r: nice – nicer, large – larger - বড় (দুই বা তার বেশি syllable এর) বিশেষণে more: more beautiful, more difficult, more expensive, more useful। -ly শেষ adverb এ more: more quickly, more carefully - অনিয়মিত: good/well – better (50.7, 50.9), bad – worse, far – farther/further, little – less (50.11), much/many – more (50.8, 50.10) - -er আর more একসঙ্গে বসে না: ✗ more taller, ✗ more bigger, ✗ more better ← ✓ taller, ✓ bigger, ✓ better। বাংলায় «আরও লম্বা» বলা যায়, তাই ভুলটা সহজে ঢোকে। - বাংলায় বিশেষণ একই থাকে, তাই ভুল হয়: ✗ Rina is tall than Mina ← ✓ Rina is taller than Mina
৩. than এর পরে কী বসে
- বিশেষ্য: than Mina (50.1), than Sylhet (50.3), than yesterday (50.4), than coffee (50.8) - সর্বনাম: Rina is taller than me। আরও সতর্ক ইংরেজিতে taller than I (am)। দুটিই চলে: than me ঘরোয়া কথায় স্বাভাবিক, than I am লেখায় আর পরীক্ষার ইংরেজিতে বেশি চলে। - পূর্ণ বাক্য (clause): than I thought (50.6), than we expected (50.11), than she writes it (50.7), than it was a year ago (50.14)। বাংলায় «আমি যা ভেবেছিলাম তার চেয়ে» বলতে হয়; ইংরেজিতে «যা» আর «তার» এর কোনো প্রতিশব্দ বসে না: ✓ easier than I thought। ✗ easier than what I thought ঘরোয়া কথায় শোনা যায়, কিন্তু লেখায় এড়ানো ভালো। - do, does, did: than এর পরে আগের ক্রিয়ার বদলে do/does/did বসতে পারে: She runs faster than he does। Bengali: «সে ওর চেয়ে দ্রুত দৌড়ায়» - অর্থের তফাত: He likes Rina more than I do (আমি রিনাকে যত পছন্দ করি, সে তার চেয়ে বেশি করে) আর He likes Rina more than me (সে আমাকে যত পছন্দ করে, তার চেয়ে রিনাকে বেশি)। than me আর than I do এক নয়, তাই অর্থ গুলিয়ে গেলে ক্রিয়াসহ বলুন। - to + ক্রিয়া বা -ing: দুই পাশ একই গড়নের হবে: It is better to decide quickly than to lose it (50.23)। Walking is healthier than driving। ✗ Walking is healthier than to drive - স্থান বা সময়ের তুলনা: more light than in our old flat (50.20), busier than on Friday। তুলনার জিনিস স্থান বা সময় হলে than এর পরে preposition (in, on) আবার বসে।
৪. সংখ্যা, পরিমাণ আর মাত্রা
- more than / less than + সংখ্যা: more than fifty people (50.10) = পঞ্চাশজনের বেশি। পঞ্চাশ নিজে ধরা হয় না। less than ten minutes = দশ মিনিটের কম - গোনা যায় এমন জিনিসের সঙ্গে fewer, না গোনা গেলে less: fewer than ten books, less water। কথায় less than ten books-ও শোনা যায়, কিন্তু সতর্ক লেখায় fewer - কতটা বেশি: পরিমাণ more এর আগে বসে: two thousand taka more than our budget (50.18), two years older than me, two inches taller than Rina। ✗ more two thousand taka - জোর দেওয়া: much, far, a lot, even, still comparative এর আগে বসে: much cleaner (50.19), even nicer (50.25), far better। ✗ very cleaner, ✗ very more। বাংলায় «খুব সুন্দর» আর «ছবির চেয়েও সুন্দর» দুটি আলাদা: very beautiful (সাধারণ) কিন্তু even more beautiful (তুলনায় আরও)। - no more than / not more than: no more than one month's rent (50.29) = এক মাসের ভাড়ার বেশি নয়, সর্বোচ্চ ততটাই। not less than = কমপক্ষে
৫. than আর তার চেনা সঙ্গীরা
- as … as: সমান হলে as … as, than নয়: Rina is as tall as Mina। না-বাচক: not as tall as Mina। ✗ as tall than, ✗ the same than ← ✓ the same as - different: different from (সবচেয়ে নিরাপদ); different than আমেরিকান ইংরেজিতে ক্রিয়াসহ বাক্যের আগে শোনা যায়, কিন্তু পরীক্ষায় from লিখুন: ✓ different from mine। ব্রিটেনে different to-ও চলে - prefer: prefer X to Y; prefer এর সঙ্গে than নয়: I prefer tea to coffee। ✗ I prefer tea than coffee। ক্রিয়া হলে: I prefer walking to waiting। - superior, inferior, senior, junior: এখানেও than নয়, to: senior to me, ✗ senior than me। এগুলো -or দিয়ে শেষ হলেও আসলে comparative নয়, তাই than বসে না। - rather than (50.15): দুটি বিকল্পের একটি বাদ: Rather than wait, we decided to walk। rather than এর পরে ক্রিয়ার মূল রূপ বা -ing: ✗ Rather than to wait - would rather … than (50.12): would rather এর পরে to ছাড়া মূল রূপ, than এর পরেও তাই: I would rather stay than go। ✗ I would rather to stay। বিকল্পটি ক্রিয়া হলে than go, ঠিক ক্রিয়াটি একই গড়নে - other than (50.24): ছাড়া: nothing other than rice, anything other than a quiet home। other + than এর পরে সবসময় বিশেষ্য - no sooner … than (50.13): দুটি ঘটনা একটার পরেই আরেকটা। no sooner এর পরে had আর কর্তা উল্টে যায়: No sooner had we reached the station than it began to rain। ✗ No sooner we reached the station than … ← ✓ No sooner had we reached … ইংরেজিতে hardly … when আর scarcely … when-ও চলে: Hardly had we reached the station when it began to rain। কিন্তু ✗ no sooner … when। এখানে than এর অর্থ চেয়ে নয়, «তখনই» - the … the: The sooner, the better («যত তাড়াতাড়ি, তত ভালো»): এখানেও the + comparative
৬. then নয়, than
- than (তুলনা) আর then (সময়) আলাদা শব্দ, আলাদা উচ্চারণ: than [ðæn], then [ðen] - ✗ He is taller then me ← ✓ He is taller than me - ✗ First I wash, than I eat ← ✓ First I wash, then I eat - এই ভুল সবচেয়ে বেশি হয় দ্রুত লিখতে গিয়ে: লেখার পর শুধু একটি জিনিস মিলিয়ে নিন: comparative শব্দের পরে কি than?

- তুলনা ইংরেজিতে সরাসরি। Rina is taller than Mina বলা স্বাভাবিক। কিন্তু মানুষের চেহারা বা গুণ নিয়ে তুলনা করে সামনাসামনি বললে অভদ্র শোনায়: You are fatter than your brother। জিনিস নিয়ে, জায়গা নিয়ে, সময় নিয়ে তুলনা নিরাপদ। - প্রশংসায় than: You look younger than your age (আপনাকে বয়সের চেয়ে কম দেখায়) — ভদ্র প্রশংসা। Better than ever (আগের চেয়ে ভালো) আর more than welcome («স্বাগতম, একদম নির্দ্বিধায়») ঘরোয়া ভদ্রতার কথা। - Better late than never («কখনও না হওয়ার চেয়ে দেরিতে হওয়া ভালো») অনেক পুরোনো প্রবাদ। দেরিতে আসা কাউকে সান্ত্বনা দিতে বলা হয়। - Better safe than sorry: «আগে সাবধান, পরে আফসোস নয়»। - Easier said than done: «বলা সহজ, করা কঠিন»। - Actions speak louder than words: «মুখের কথার চেয়ে কাজ বেশি বলে», অর্থাৎ কাজই আসল। - Two heads are better than one: «এক মাথার চেয়ে দুই মাথা ভালো»; একা না ভেবে একসঙ্গে ভাবলে সমাধান সহজ হয়। - Blood is thicker than water: «জলের চেয়ে রক্ত ঘন», অর্থাৎ আত্মীয়তার টান অন্য সম্পর্কের চেয়ে বেশি। - More than meets the eye: «চোখে যা পড়ে, তার চেয়ে বেশি», অর্থাৎ ব্যাপারটা দেখতে যত সহজ, আসলে তার চেয়ে জটিল। - More than happy to help মানে «খুবই খুশি»: «আনন্দের সঙ্গে সাহায্য করব»। ঘরোয়া ভদ্রতার কথা; এর মানে «কম খুশি» নয়। - Less is more: «যত কম, ততই ভালো»; নকশা আর লেখায় এই প্রবাদ চলে। - «চেয়ে» আর than: বাংলায় «চেয়ে» আরেকটি কাজেও আসে: «সে আমার দিকে চেয়ে আছে» (তাকিয়ে আছে), «টাকা চেয়ে নিয়েছে» (চাওয়া থেকে)। বানান এক, তাই লেখায় বাক্য দেখে বুঝতে হয় কোন «চেয়ে»। ইংরেজিতে তুলনার জন্য শুধু than, আর look at, ask for ভিন্ন শব্দ। - than me, than I: স্কুলের ব্যাকরণে than I am শেখানো হয়, কিন্তু রোজকার কথায় than me বেশি চলে। লেখায় আর পরীক্ষায় than I am লিখলে নিরাপদ। - different than আমেরিকায় বেশি শোনা যায়, ব্রিটেনে different from বা different to। পরীক্ষা আর আনুষ্ঠানিক লেখায় different from। - বিজ্ঞাপনে than এর প্রচুর ব্যবহার: Cheaper than ever, Faster than yesterday, Better than before। «আগের চেয়ে ভালো» বলাই বিজ্ঞাপনের ভাষা।

Alfred, Lord Tennyson (১৮০৯–১৮৯২) In Memoriam A.H.H. লিখেছিলেন তাঁর কেমব্রিজের বন্ধু আর্থার হেনরি হ্যালামের স্মরণে। হ্যালাম ১৮৩৩ সালে ভিয়েনায় মারা যান, বাইশ বছর বয়সে। দীর্ঘ এই শোককাব্য বহু বছর ধরে লেখা, আর ১৮৫০ সালে নাম ছাড়া প্রকাশিত হয়। এখানে নেওয়া হয়েছে এর XXVII সংখ্যক অংশের শেষ স্তবক। আগের তিন স্তবকে কবি বলেন, তিনি তাঁদের ঈর্ষা করেন না যাঁরা কখনও গভীর কিছু অনুভব করেননি: খাঁচায় জন্মানো পাখি, যে কখনও বন দেখেনি; বিবেকহীন পশু; আর সেই হৃদয়, যে কখনও প্রতিশ্রুতি দেয়নি। তারপর শেষ স্তবকে তিনি নিজের বিশ্বাস জানান।
এই পাঠের বিষয় এখানে স্পষ্ট দেখা যায়। শেষ দুই লাইন একটি তুলনা: better, তারপর than। একদিকে «ভালোবেসে হারানো», অন্যদিকে «কখনও না ভালোবাসা»। than বলে দেয় কোন দুটি জিনিসের মধ্যে তুলনা। বাংলায় তুলনার জিনিস আগে বসে: «কখনও না ভালোবাসার চেয়ে ভালোবেসে হারানো ভালো»। ইংরেজিতে আগে better, তারপর than, আর তুলনার জিনিস তার পরে: তাই than শেষ লাইনের একেবারে শুরুতে এসে দ্বিতীয় অর্ধেকটি খুলে দেয়।
লাইনটি আজ এত চেনা যে প্রবাদের মতো উদ্ধৃত হয়, প্রায়ই কবির নাম ছাড়াই। In Memoriam এর কোনো কোনো সংস্করণে ছোট যতিচিহ্নের তফাত থাকে; এই স্তবকের পাঠ একাধিক উৎসে মিলে গেছে।
- I hold it true: hold = ধরি, বিশ্বাস করি; it = পরের লাইনের বক্তব্য; true = সত্য। এখানে it আগে বসে আর আসল বক্তব্য পরে আসে। আজকের গদ্যে: I believe that it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all - whate'er befall: whate'er = whatever (সংক্ষেপ, কাব্যিক); befall = ঘটে, নেমে আসে। আজকের গদ্যে whatever happens। befall এখানে subjunctive: «যা-ই ঘটুক»; তাই সাধারণ বর্তমানের befalls নয় - I feel it, when I sorrow most: sorrow এখানে ক্রিয়া, «শোক করা»; আজ এটি প্রায় বিশেষ্য হিসেবেই চলে। most = সবচেয়ে বেশি - 'Tis: it is এর সংক্ষেপ, কাব্যিক আর পুরোনো। আজকের গদ্যে It is। 'Tis কখনও আজকের কথায় নয় - better to have loved and lost: better = good এর comparative (অনিয়মিত, ✗ gooder)। to have loved = perfect infinitive («ভালোবেসে থাকা, একবার ভালোবাসা»), lost এর সঙ্গে জোড়া: «ভালোবেসে হারানো» - Than never to have loved at all: than এর পরে বসেছে আরেকটি perfect infinitive, ঠিক প্রথমটির মতো গড়নে: to have loved and lost ↔ never to have loved। দুই পাশ একই গড়নের, এটি than এর নিয়ম (Section D ৩)। never এখানে infinitive এর সামনে বসেছে: never to have loved। at all = মোটেই, একেবারেই; negative এর সঙ্গে জোর দেয় - শব্দের ক্রম: সাধারণ গদ্যে It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all। ক্রম একই, শুধু 'Tis বদলে It is

১. comparative + than: সবচেয়ে সাধারণ গড়ন
- bigger than (50.16), higher than (50.17), cleaner than (50.19), nicer than (50.25), kinder than (50.26), earlier than (50.28), more important than (50.30) - the one in Mirpur (50.16): one এখানে flat এর বদলে, বারবার flat না বলার জন্য। our old one (50.19) = our old kitchen। ✗ the one flat। একবচনে one, বহুবচনে ones: the ones in Mirpur - the rent is higher than we planned (50.17): বাংলায় «যা … তার», ইংরেজিতে planned এর পরে বা আগে কিছুই বসে না। ✗ than what we planned (লেখায় এড়ানো ভালো)
২. তফাত আর পরিমাণ
- two thousand taka more than our budget (50.18): কতটা বেশি তা more এর আগে। ✗ more two thousand taka - much cleaner (50.19), even nicer (50.25): much আর even comparative এর আগে। ✗ very cleaner - more light than in our old flat (50.20): more + না-গোনা বিশেষ্য (light)। than এর পরে in: তুলনা স্থানের সঙ্গে স্থানের - more than twenty thousand taka (50.22): সংখ্যার আগে more than; কুড়ি হাজার ধরা হয় না - no more than one month's rent (50.29): এক মাসের ভাড়ার বেশি নয়। no more than = সর্বোচ্চ ততটা। month's: apostrophe এবং s, কারণ rent একটি মাসের
৩. would rather … than
- I would rather pay more than live in a dark flat (50.21): would rather এর পরে pay, than এর পরে live; দুটিই to ছাড়া মূল রূপ। ✗ than to live - I would rather rent it to a family than to an office (50.27): এখানে দুটি বিকল্প preposition সহ: to a family, to an office। দুই পাশ একই গড়নের - বাংলায় একই ভাব: «…এর চেয়ে বরং …»
৪. better to … than to …
- it is better to decide quickly than to lose it (50.23): দুই পাশেই to + ক্রিয়া। ✗ than lose it ঘরোয়া কথায় শোনা গেলেও দুই পাশ একই গড়নের রাখুন - must decide (50.23): must এর পরে মূল রূপ। ✗ must to decide
৫. other than, even, no more than
- anything other than a quiet home (50.24) = শান্ত বাড়ি ছাড়া আর কিছু। do not want anything: না-বাচকে anything। ✗ I do not want nothing - the roof is even nicer than the photo (50.25): even তুলনাকে আরও জোরালো করে। ✗ even more nicer ← ✓ even nicer - Then we agree (50.25): ✗ we are agree। agree একটি ক্রিয়া, be লাগে না
৬. ক্রিয়ার কাল তুলনার অংশে
- He sounded kinder than they had feared (50.26): sounded অতীত; feared আরও আগের, তাই had feared। ডর আগে ছিল, শোনার সময় দেখা গেল ভিন্ন - earlier than you expect (50.28): কথাটি ভবিষ্যতের হলেও expect বর্তমান কালে, কারণ প্রত্যাশা এখনকার। ✗ than you will expect - the landlord says (50.22): সাধারণ কথা বা অভ্যাস বর্তমান কালে বলা হয়। says the landlord-ও চলে, কিন্তু সর্বনাম হলে ক্রম বদলায় না: he says
