now একটি ক্রিয়াবিশেষণ (adverb), যার মূল অর্থ «এখন»: যে মুহূর্তে কথা বলা হচ্ছে, সেই সময়। I am here now (আমি এখন এখানে আছি), Do it now (এখনই করো), Now I understand (এখন আমি বুঝতে পারছি)।
বাংলায় সময়ের শব্দগুলো একই পরিবারের: «এখন», «তখন», «যখন», «কখন»। ইংরেজিতে সেগুলো আলাদা শব্দ: now (এখন), then (তখন), when (যখন, কখন)। আবার বাংলায় «এখন» থেকে তিনটি আলাদা শব্দ তৈরি হয়: «এখনই», «এখনও», «এখনকার»; ইংরেজিতে এগুলোর জন্য তিনটি আলাদা গড়ন। এখানেই বাংলাভাষীদের বেশির ভাগ ভুল:
- «এখনও» ≠ now। «সে এখনও ঘুমাচ্ছে» ইংরেজিতে He is still sleeping; «আমি এখনও খাইনি» ইংরেজিতে I have not eaten yet। ✗ I have not eaten now। - «এখনই» = right now, at once। ইংরেজিতে now একা প্রায়ই নরম শোনায়: Do it now (এখন করো তো)। জোর দিতে হলে right now বা at once। ✗ Do it now only, ✗ Do it now itself। - «এখন থেকে» = from now on, «এখন পর্যন্ত» = until now। ✗ Since now I will study every day ← ✓ From now on I will study every day।
now এর আরও কিছু কাজ আছে, যেগুলোর জন্য বাংলায় আলাদা কথা লাগে:
- কথার মোড় ঘোরানো: Now, let's begin (আচ্ছা, এবার শুরু করা যাক)। Now what? (এবার কী?)। এখানে now সময় বোঝায় না, নতুন প্রসঙ্গ শুরু করে। - now that: যেহেতু এখন, এখন যখন: Now that you are here, we can start (এখন যখন তুমি এসে গেছ, আমরা শুরু করতে পারি)। - just now: এইমাত্র। right now: এই মুহূর্তে। for now: আপাতত। by now: এতক্ষণে। - now and then / every now and then: মাঝে মাঝে। - nowadays: আজকাল। - not now: এখন নয়, ভদ্রভাবে কিছু পিছিয়ে দেওয়ার কথা।
শব্দটির ইতিহাস: now এসেছে পুরোনো ইংরেজি nū থেকে। জার্মান nun, ওলন্দাজ nu, ল্যাটিন nunc, গ্রিক νῦν (nûn) আর সংস্কৃত নু (nu) একই মূলের শব্দ বলে ধরা হয়। এই মূলের অর্থ ছিল «এখন» বা «এবার», আর শব্দটি এত ছোট যে হাজার বছরে প্রায় বদলায়নি। বাংলা «এখন» শব্দের উৎস নিয়ে একটি প্রচলিত ব্যাখ্যা আছে: «এই ক্ষণ» (এই মুহূর্ত) থেকে এসেছে।
বানান আর উচ্চারণ নিয়ে একটি সতর্কতা: now এর শেষ ow উচ্চারিত হয় [aʊ], «আউ» এর মতো, তাই শব্দটি «নাউ»। কিন্তু know আর no এর স্বর [əʊ], «ও» এর কাছাকাছি। ✗ I now the answer ← ✓ I know the answer। how, cow, down এর ow-ও [aʊ], আর show, slow, snow এর ow [əʊ]।

The English word now is the adverb of the present moment. Bengali says it with এখন, but has three neighbouring words that English does not translate with now: এখনও (still, yet), এখনই (right now, at once) and এখনকার (present-day, current). This lesson trains the reader to place now at the start, middle or end of a sentence, to pair it with the right tense, to use the fixed phrases right now, just now, for now, by now, from now on, until now and every now and then, to use the conjunction now that, and to avoid the commonest errors: now only, since now, now a days and not eaten now.

১. now বাক্যের কোথায় বসে
- শুরুতে: Now I understand (51.3)। বাক্যের শুরুতে now প্রায়ই নতুন প্রসঙ্গ খোলে; পরে কমা বসতে পারে, জোর দিলে বা কথার মোড় ঘোরালে: Now, let's begin। - শেষে: I am here now (51.1), What time is it now? (51.2), She lives in Dhaka now (51.6), It is raining now (51.7)। কথায় এটিই সবচেয়ে সাধারণ জায়গা। - মাঝে: be ক্রিয়ার পরে বা সহায়ক ক্রিয়ার পরে, মূল ক্রিয়ার আগে: He is now a teacher। I have now finished। She now lives in Dhaka। লেখায় আর বক্তৃতায় চলে, কথায় কম। - ক্রিয়া আর কর্মের মাঝে নয়: ✗ I like now tea ← ✓ I like tea now। ✗ She opened now the door ← ✓ She opened the door now। - বাংলায় «এখন» সাধারণত কর্তার আগে বা পরে বসে (এখন আমি, আমি এখন)। ইংরেজিতে কর্তার আগে (Now I) বা বাক্যের শেষে: ✗ I now am here। - তুলনা: then আর now একসঙ্গে বসে ভাবের তফাত দেখায়: He was a student then, but now he is a teacher (51.9)। বাংলায়ও «তখন … এখন …» ঠিক এভাবেই।
২. now এর সঙ্গে কাল (tense)
- চলছে এমন কাজ: continuous। It is raining now (51.7), I am here now (51.1), Now I am going। ✗ It rains now (যখন এই মুহূর্তে বৃষ্টি হচ্ছে)। - এখনকার অবস্থা: simple present। She lives in Dhaka now (51.6): এখন (আগে নয়) সে ঢাকায় থাকে। এখানে now মানে «আজকাল, বর্তমানে», তাই continuous নয়। - ভাবনা বা বোঝা: simple present। Now I understand (51.3)। understand, know, want, like এর continuous হয় না: ✗ Now I am understanding ← ✓ Now I understand। (বাংলায় «বুঝতে পারছি» বলা যায়, ইংরেজিতে নয়।) - present perfect: until now (51.12) এর সঙ্গে বর্তমান পর্যন্ত হিসাব ধরা হয়: Nobody has told me। by now (51.14) এর সঙ্গে must have + past participle চলে: She must have reached home। - অতীত নয়, যদি না just now হয়: ✗ He went home now ← ✓ He went home just now (সে এইমাত্র বাড়ি গেছে)। just now এর সঙ্গে simple past চলে। - ভবিষ্যৎ: I will do it now মানে «আমি এখনই করব» (সিদ্ধান্ত)। ✗ I will do it from now, ✗ I will come now only। - অতীতের বর্ণনায় now: গল্পে now মানে «এবার, তখন», অতীত কালের সঙ্গে চলে: She had been busy since noon, but now dinner was almost ready (51.16)। বাংলায় এখানে «এবার» বা «তখন» বলতে হয়, «এখন» নয়। কথায় এই ব্যবহার বিরল; গল্পে চেনা দরকার।
৩. now নয়, still বা yet
- বাংলার «এখনও» ইংরেজিতে still (হ্যাঁ-বাচক) বা yet (না-বাচক আর প্রশ্নে): He is still sleeping। I have not eaten yet। Has she come yet? (সে কি এখনও এসেছে?) - ✗ I have not eaten now ← ✓ I have not eaten yet - ✗ Is he now at home? (যদি মানে হয় «এখনও বাড়িতে?») ← ✓ Is he still at home? - now = এখন, ভিন্ন সময়ের সঙ্গে তুলনা করে; still = «এখনও, আগের মতোই»: He lived there then and still lives there now (সে তখন সেখানে থাকত, আর এখনও থাকে)। - «এখনকার» (present-day): the present, current, today's: today's prices, the current situation। ✗ the now prices ← ✓ the current prices, today's prices। now সাধারণত বিশেষণ হিসেবে বিশেষ্যের আগে বসে না।
৪. now এর সঙ্গী: স্থির গড়ন
- right now (51.8) = এই মুহূর্তে, এখনই। at once, immediately = এক্ষুনি, সঙ্গে সঙ্গে; এ দুটি আদেশে আরও জোরালো - just now = এইমাত্র। Simple past চলে: I saw him just now - for now = আপাতত: Let's stop for now - by now (51.14) = এতক্ষণে; বর্তমান পর্যন্ত যা হয়ে যাওয়ার কথা। By now she must have reached home। must have + past participle = «নিশ্চয়ই হয়ে গেছে» - from now on (51.11) = এখন থেকে; ভবিষ্যতের জন্য। এর সঙ্গে future বা present: From now on I will get up early, From now on we are friends। ✗ Since now, ✗ From now itself - until now / up to now (51.12) = এখন পর্যন্ত। present perfect-এর সঙ্গে। so far-ও চলে - every now and then / now and then / now and again (51.15) = মাঝে মাঝে। এগুলো স্থির গড়ন, শব্দ বদলায় না: ✗ every now and thens - a week from now = এখন থেকে এক সপ্তাহ পরে। two years from now। এখানে from now ঠিক আছে, কারণ ভবিষ্যতের একটি বিন্দু বোঝায়, একটি শুরুর বিন্দু নয় - nowadays (এক শব্দ) = আজকাল। ✗ now a days, ✗ now-a-days। বাংলায় «আজকাল» আর ইংরেজিতে nowadays: আগের সঙ্গে বিপরীত: Nowadays most people use phones, not letters - not now (51.4) = এখন নয়। ভদ্র প্রত্যাখ্যান বা পিছিয়ে দেওয়া। Maybe later বললে আরও নরম হয়
৫. now that
- now that + পূর্ণ বাক্য = যেহেতু এখন, এখন যখন: Now that the exam is over, we can relax (51.13)। Now that you are here, we can start। - now that কারণ বোঝায় আর নতুন অবস্থা তুলে ধরে: আগে ছিল না, এখন আছে। because শুধু কারণ বলে, «এখন নতুন অবস্থা» ভাবটি দেয় না - that বাদ দেওয়া যায়, কথায়: Now you are here, we can start। লেখায় that রাখুন - now that এর পরে সাধারণত present বা present perfect: Now that we have decided, let's go
৬. কথার মোড় হিসেবে now
- Now, … বক্তা প্রসঙ্গ ঘোরান বা শ্রোতাকে থামান: Now, listen carefully। Now then, who is next? এখানে now কোনো সময় বোঝায় না - Now what? (51.17) = এবার কী? অসুবিধা এলে বিরক্তি বা প্রশ্ন; Now then = আচ্ছা, তাহলে - Now নিজেই কখনও সাবধান করে: Now, now, don't cry (ছিঃ, কেঁদো না) - বাংলায় এই কাজ করে «আচ্ছা», «তা», «এবার»
৭. উচ্চারণ আর বানান
- now [naʊ], know/no [nəʊ]। দুটি আলাদা: now এ জিভ আর ঠোঁট [a] থেকে [ʊ] এর দিকে যায়; know এ [ə] থেকে [ʊ] এর দিকে - ✗ I now the answer ← ✓ I know the answer। এই ভুল লেখায় হয়, কারণ উচ্চারণ প্রায় একই শোনায় - ✗ nau, ✗ noo, ✗ nou। বানান now

- এখন, তখন, যখন, কখন। বাংলা এই চারটি শব্দ একই -খন দিয়ে শেষ করে, আর ইংরেজিতে সেগুলো আলাদা শব্দ: now, then, when। ইংরেজিতে now আর then জোড়া: then and now (আগে আর এখন), now and then (মাঝে মাঝে)। - Now! একা বললে কর্কশ। একজন অন্যজনকে Now! বললে আদেশ শোনায়। ভদ্র রূপ: Could you do it now, please? বা Would you mind doing it now? শিক্ষক বা অভিভাবক Now! বলে থামিয়ে দিতে পারেন, কিন্তু অন্যদের সঙ্গে সাবধান। - Not now ভদ্র, কিন্তু সংক্ষিপ্ত। আরও নরম: Not right now, sorry, I am in the middle of something। কেউ ডাকলে I can't talk right now বলা ভদ্র; Later? বললে সময়ও দেওয়া হয়। - Well, I must be going now (আচ্ছা, এবার উঠতে হবে): বিদায় নেওয়ার ভদ্র কথা। এখানে now সময় নয়, নরম করে বিদায়ের ইঙ্গিত দেয়। উত্তরে: Oh, so soon? বা Of course, thanks for coming। - Just now সাধারণ ইংরেজিতে মানে «এইমাত্র» (I saw her just now)। দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকার ইংরেজিতে just now মানে «একটু পরে», তাই সেখানকার কারও কথা শুনলে সাবধান। - As of now আর at the moment দুটিই চলে: As of now, we have no news (এ পর্যন্ত আমাদের কাছে খবর নেই)। at the moment আরও সাধারণ কথার ধরন, at present আরও আনুষ্ঠানিক। - Now open, Now hiring, Now playing, Now available: দোকান আর বিজ্ঞাপনের ঘোষণা। «এখন চালু», «এখন নিয়োগ চলছে»। এখানে now নতুনত্বের ইঙ্গিত দেয়। - It's now or never («এখন নয়তো কখনও নয়»): শেষ সুযোগের কথা। The here and now («এখানে আর এখন»): ধ্যান বা মনোযোগের আলোচনায় বর্তমান মুহূর্ত নিয়ে বলা হয়। - Now you see it, now you don't («এই দেখা গেল, এই নেই»): জাদুকরের বুলি; যে জিনিস দ্রুত হারিয়ে যায়, তার কথাতেও বলা হয়। - right now জোর দেয়, কিন্তু অধৈর্যও শোনাতে পারে: I need it right now বললে চাপ আসে। I need it as soon as possible তুলনায় নরম। - এখনও আর now। «সে কি এখনও আসেনি?» ইংরেজিতে Hasn't she come yet? বা Isn't she here yet?: yet এর সুরে একটু অধৈর্য থাকে। ভদ্রভাবে জানতে চাইলে I wonder if she has arrived yet। - now, know, no, new: চারটি শব্দের চেহারা কাছাকাছি, আর দ্রুত লিখলে গুলিয়ে যায়। লেখা শেষ হলে মিলিয়ে নিন: now কি সত্যিই সময় বোঝাচ্ছে?

Richard III এর প্রথম শব্দটিই Now। নাটক শুরু হয় রিচার্ডের একক সংলাপে। রিচার্ড তখন গ্লস্টারের ডিউক, পরে রাজা তৃতীয় রিচার্ড। তিনি মঞ্চে একা এসে দর্শকের সঙ্গে কথা বলেন। ইংল্যান্ডে ইয়র্ক আর ল্যাঙ্কাস্টার বংশের দীর্ঘ গৃহযুদ্ধ, যা পরে Wars of the Roses নামে পরিচিত, সবে শেষ হয়েছে; তাঁর ভাই চতুর্থ এডওয়ার্ড, ইয়র্ক বংশের সন্তান, এখন রাজা। এই চার লাইনে রিচার্ড শান্তির সময়কে আনন্দের গলায় বর্ণনা করেন: অসন্তোষের «শীত» হয়ে গেছে «গ্রীষ্ম», যুদ্ধের মেঘ সাগরে ডুবে গেছে। তবে দর্শক শিগগিরই বোঝেন, এই আনন্দ রিচার্ডের নয়, তিনি শান্তির এই সময় সহ্য করতে পারছেন না। সংলাপে এরপর তিনি তা-ই জানান।
শব্দটি এখানে সময়ের তফাত তৈরি করে। Now মানে «এখন, যুদ্ধের পরে», আর বোঝা যায় আগে অন্য কিছু ছিল। পঞ্চম লাইনও একই শব্দে শুরু: Now are our brows bound with victorious wreaths («এখন আমাদের কপাল বিজয়ের মালায় বাঁধা»)। পরপর বাক্যের শুরুতে একই শব্দ ফিরে আসার এই কৌশলকে বলে পুনরাবৃত্তি (anaphora)। এভাবে নাট্যকার শান্তির বর্ণনা একটির পর একটি গাঁথেন।
আরও একটি শব্দখেলা: son of York (ইয়র্কের পুত্র) আর sun of York (ইয়র্কের সূর্য) উচ্চারণে এক, [sʌn]। চতুর্থ এডওয়ার্ড ১৪৬১ সালে মর্টিমার্স ক্রস এর যুদ্ধের পর «sun in splendour» (জ্বলজ্বলে সূর্য) কে নিজের প্রতীক করেন বলে বলা হয়, তাই এখানে «পুত্র» আর «সূর্য» একসঙ্গে শোনা যায়: গ্রীষ্ম আসে সূর্য থেকে। এই পাঠে Folger Shakespeare Library এর সংস্করণের বানান son রাখা হয়েছে; অন্য সংস্করণে বানান ভিন্ন হতে পারে, উচ্চারণ একই।

৩. now নরম করার শব্দ হিসেবে (51.19)

(51.24): now that + বর্তমান কাল। অতীতের কারণ নয়, বর্তমান অবস্থা। ভাত অর্ধেক হয়ে আছে, তাই প্রশ্ন - what shall we do? shall এখানে ব্রিটিশ ইংরেজিতে সহজ প্রশ্ন: «আমরা কী করব?» আমেরিকায় what should we do? বা what do we do? - for now (51.25) = আপাতত, পরে বদলাতে পারে: Move it for now। বাক্যের শেষে। ✗ Move it for the now - Move it to the gas stove: Move + কর্ম + to + জায়গা। ✗ Move it in the gas stove
৬. সংলাপে কাল
