I want to go. / It is difficult to learn a language. I went to the station.
- I want to go. / She wants to go. / They wanted to go.
ドイツ語の zu(zu gehen = 行くこと)と同じ起源の語です。
要点 (Key Takeaways):
to" の後ろは必ず原形:to go, to eat, to be - 主語や時制で変わるのは最初の動詞だけ:She wants to go. / They wanted to go. - want, need, decide, plan, hope, promise, like, try などの後に to + 動詞が来る - 目的(〜するために):I went to the station to buy a ticket. - 形容詞の後:happy to, difficult to, too … to, … enough to - 名詞の後:time to visit, something to eat - 疑問詞の後:what to do, where to go, how to use - 否定は not to + 動詞:promised not to be late - can, will, must, should などの助動詞の後には "to" を付けない:I can swim. × I can to swim. - 前置詞の "to"(to the station)と、不定詞の "to"(to buy)は別のもの

- I want to go. (12.1) / She wants to go. / They wanted to go. × She wants to goes. × They wanted to went. She promised not to be late. She didn't promise to be late.
- want to(〜したい)(12.1)、like to(〜するのが好き)(12.2)、need to(〜する必要がある)(12.3) - decide to(〜することに決める)(12.4)、plan to(〜する予定だ)(12.5)、hope to(〜できたらと願う)(12.25) - promise to(〜すると約束する)(12.8)、try to(〜しようとする)(12.27)、forget to(〜し忘れる)(12.28) - would like to(〜したいのですが)(12.6, 12.17) — want to より丁寧です。
told me to practice (12.9)
- tell + 人 + to … (I want you to come.)
- I went to the station to buy a ticket. (12.10) — 切符を買うために駅へ行った - I will call you at seven to wake you up.
とも言います:in order to buy a ticket。否定の目的は in order not to … です。目的を表すのに "for + 動詞" は使えません:× I went to the station for buy a ticket. × for buying a ticket.
I went to the station for a ticket.
5. 形容詞 + to
- happy to go (12.19)、difficult to learn (12.7) - too + 形容詞 + to + 動詞 = 〜すぎて…できない:too tired to walk (12.11) - 形容詞 + enough + to + 動詞 = …するのに十分〜だ:old enough to drive (12.12)
It is difficult to learn a new language. (12.7) の "It" は、後ろの "to learn …"
This book is difficult to read. が正しく、× This book is difficult to read it.
for + 人 + to … It is important for children to sleep well.
6. 名詞 + to
- time to visit the market (12.23) — 市場を見る時間 - plenty of time to see everything (12.24) — 全部見るのに十分な時間 - something to eat — 食べるもの - a place to live — 住む場所 - the time to go to class (12.30) — 授業に行く時間
英語では名詞の後ろに to + 動詞が来ます(time to see)。
7. 疑問詞 + to
what / where / how / which / whether の後ろに to + 動詞を置くと、「何を〜すればいいか」「どこへ〜すればいいか」などの意味になります:
- I don't know what to do. (12.13) — 何をすればいいのかわからない - I don't know where to go. — どこへ行けばいいのかわからない - Please show me how to use it.
- be going to + 動詞(〜するつもりだ)(12.26):I'm going to buy a present. - would like to + 動詞(〜したいのですが)(12.6, 12.17) - seem to + 動詞(〜のようだ)(12.14)
He seems to have forgotten my name. He seems to forget names.
- I went to the station. (12.10) — to + 名詞:前置詞 - I went to the station to buy a ticket. (12.10) — 一つ目は前置詞、二つ目は不定詞 - We could take a bus to Granville Island. (12.18) — 前置詞 - It is time to go to class. (12.30) — 一つ目は不定詞、二つ目は前置詞 - I'm looking forward to it.
I'm looking forward to it. I'm looking forward to meeting you. × I'm looking forward to meet you.
その他、前置詞の "to" の後ろに -ing が来る例:be used to doing(〜することに慣れている)、look forward to doing(〜するのを楽しみにする)。
- 助動詞の後:can, will, must, should, may の後ろは原形のみです。I can swim. × I can to swim. - Let's の後:Let's try. × Let's to try. - make / let + 人 の後:She made me laugh. / He let me go. I enjoy swimming. × I enjoy to swim. Don't forget to bring your camera.
- Do you want to come? — Yes, I'd love to.(= I'd love to come.) - I don't want to.(= I don't want to go.)
(Common Mistakes):
- I want go. → I want to go. - I can to swim. → I can swim. - He wants that I go. → He wants me to go. - I went to the station for buy a ticket. → I went to the station to buy a ticket. - I enjoy to swim. → I enjoy swimming. - I look forward to see you. → I look forward to seeing you. - This book is difficult to read it. → This book is difficult to read. - She said me to come. → She told me to come. - I decided going. → I decided to go. - I don't know what do. → I don't know what to do. - She promised to not be late. → She promised not to be late.(話し言葉では to not も使われますが、not to が標準的です) - It is important that children to sleep well. → It is important for children to sleep well.

初対面では Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you, too. Nice to see you again. や Good to see you. - 丁寧に伝えたいときは、I want to よりも I would like to … I would like to ask a question. I want to ask a question. - 誘いを受けるときは、I'd love to. Sorry, I'd love to, but I can't. For here or to go?(店内でお召し上がりですか、お持ち帰りですか)と聞かれます。 - Welcome to Japan! や Welcome to our home! - 話の最初に To be honest, … (正直に言うと) や To begin with, … Try to say it again. Try to …

To be or not to be—that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles And, by opposing, end them.
最初の行の "To be or not to be" は、不定詞そのものが問いの中心になっています。
形容詞 + to + 動詞という形は、Section D の規則5 (happy to go, 12.19) と同じです。
- To be or not to be:不定詞が問いの主題になっています("that is the question" の that がそれを受けます)。 また "not" が "to" の前に来る点は、規則1と同じです (not to be)。 - 'tis = it is:古い短縮形です。 - nobler in the mind to suffer:nobler は noble の比較級(more noble)。 - Or to take arms:Whether … to suffer … or to take arms … - a sea of troubles:「苦難の海」。 - by opposing:by の後ろは -ing 形です。 × by to oppose。 - end them:them = 前の行の "troubles"(苦難)を指します。

- want to(〜したい):Do you want to do something this weekend? - would like to(〜したいのですが):I would like to see the city. (12.17) - 前置詞の "to":We could take a bus to Granville Island. Now it is time to go to class. (12.30) — 一つ目の "to" は不定詞(time to go)、二つ目は前置詞(to class)。 - 形容詞 + to:I'm happy to go anywhere. - have to(〜しなければならない):we have to get up early (12.20) — Lesson 11 の復習です。 - don't like to:I don't like to get up before eight! - 目的の "to":I will call you at seven to wake you up. will call you at seven" と "to wake you up" の間に、for は入れません。 - 名詞 + to:time to visit the market (12.23)、plenty of time to see everything (12.24)。 - hope to:I hope to find some fresh fruit. - be going to:I'm going to buy a present (12.26) — 「〜するつもりです」。 - try to:let's try to meet (12.27) — 「〜するようにしましょう」。 - forget to:Don't forget to bring your camera! - look forward to + 名詞/-ing:I'm looking forward to it! I'm looking forward to the trip. / I'm looking forward to seeing the market.

- 強い形 /tuː/:「to」「too」「two」は、どれも同じ /tuː/ の音です (12.11 の "too tired to walk" には二つ入っています)。 Yes, I'd love to. /jes aɪd ˈlʌv ˈtuː/、I don't want to. /aɪ doʊnt ˈwɑːnt tuː/ - 弱い形 /tə/:不定詞の "to" は、普通は短く弱く、「タ」に近い音で発音されます。 want to go → /ˈwɑːn(t) tə ˈɡoʊ/ 「ワン(ト)タ ゴウ」 - 母音の前では /tu/ または /tʊ/ になることもあります:to eat /tu ˈiːt/。
- I want to go. /aɪ ˈwɑːnt tə ˈɡoʊ/ - It is difficult to learn a new language. /ɪt ɪz ˈdɪfɪkəlt tə ˈlɜːrn ə nuː ˈlæŋɡwɪdʒ/
書くときは want to, going to と書きます):
- want to → wanna /ˈwɑːnə/「ワナ」 - going to → gonna /ˈɡʌnə/「ガナ」 - have to → /ˈhæftə/「ハフタ」(Lesson 11)
I went to the station to buy a ticket. /aɪ ˈwɛnt tə ðə ˈsteɪʃən tə ˈbaɪ ə ˈtɪkɪt/ — 二つの "to" は、どちらも弱く /tə/ です。
