Lesson 13 English for Japanese Speakers: A Latinum Institute Language Course

Introduction

That is my bag. / I like that song. I think that he is kind. the book that I read.

ほかに、副詞の "that"(not that far = それほど遠くない)と、so that(〜ように)も登場します。

I think that he is kind.(動詞が先、中身があと)。 英語は the book [that I read](名詞が先、説明があと)。

指示詞の that の複数形は those です:that song → those songs。

He said that. He is kind.(彼はそう言った。 ドイツ語の das(指示詞)と dass(接続詞)も、同じ関係にあります。

要点 (Key Takeaways):

- that には三つの働きがある:指示詞(that song)、接続詞(think that he is kind)、関係代名詞(the book that I read) - 見分け方:that の後ろに、欠けているものがある文が来れば関係詞(the book that I read __)。 (I think that he is kind)。 I think he is kind. - 関係詞の that は、目的語の役目なら省略できるが、主語の役目なら省略できない:the book (that) I read / the man that lives next door - 関係詞では、日本語のように説明を名詞の前に置かない。 目的語は二度言わない:× the book that I read it - all, everything, only, 最上級のあとの関係詞は that を使う:everything that she told me - コンマのあとに that は使えない:My brother, who lives in Osaka, … - what と that は別のもの:× That I want is a pen. → What I want is a pen.

Section D (文法説明 / Grammatical Explanation)

- 指示詞(あれ・それ/あの・その):That is my bag. (13.1) / I like that song. (13.2) - 接続詞(〜と・〜ということ):I think that he is kind. (13.4) - 関係代名詞(名詞を説明する):the book that I read (13.8)

- 名詞が続くか、何も続かなければ、指示詞です:that song (13.2)、What is that? (13.3) - 完全な文が続けば、接続詞です:that he is kind (13.4)。 that lives next door (13.9)

The reason is that I want to improve my English. (13.15) 後ろの "I want to improve my English" は完全な文なので、この二つ目の that は接続詞です。一つ目の that(The reason that I came)は、「来た理由」の「理由」を説明する関係詞です。

- that + 名詞:I like that song. (13.2)、Look at that tall building. (13.6) - that だけ:What is that? (13.3)、That is a good idea. That is a good idea. 「それはいい考えです」 - 複数形は those:I like those songs. that song は単数なので、× that songs、× thats songs とは言いません。 - 比べるときは this と that:This is my bag, and that is your bag.

- 動詞のあと:think (13.4)、say (13.7)、know (13.14)、hope (13.18)、promise (13.20) - 形容詞のあと:glad (13.10)、sure、sorry、afraid - It is … that の形:It is true that the test was difficult (13.12)。It は後ろの that 節を指す形式的な主語です(Lesson 12 の It is difficult to learn と同じ働きです)。 The reason is that I want to improve my English. (13.15)、the idea that …、the fact that …

I think he is kind. / I'm glad you came.

She said that she was tired. (13.7) × She said that she is tired.(今もその状態が続いているときは、現在形も使えます:The seller said that it comes from a small farm. (13.28))

I hope to find some fresh fruit I hope that they have fresh apples. (13.18) want は that 節を取りません:× I want that you come. → I want you to come.(Lesson 12 参照)

He said that "I am tired." → He said that he was tired. / He said, "I am tired."

- 日本語:[私が読んだ] 本 (説明 → 名詞) - 英語:the book [that I read] (名詞 → 説明)

- 目的語の役目の that は省略できます:the book (that) I read (13.8)、the movie (that) we watched (13.11)、the cheese (that) I want to buy (13.22) - 主語の役目の that は省略できません:the man that lives next door (13.9)、the one that has the red sign (13.17)。× the man lives next door - 目的語は二度言いません。that が目的語の役目をしているので、後ろにもう一度 it や him を置きません:the book that I read、× the book that I read it。 - 前置詞は、文の最後に残します:the cheese that you were looking for (13.27)。× the cheese for that you were looking - 人にも物にも使えます:the man that lives next door (13.9)(who でも同じ)、the book that I read(which でも同じ)。 - all, everything, only, 最上級(the best など), the first のあとには、that を使います:Everything that she told me was true. (13.13) × everything which - 先行詞が複数なら、動詞も複数形にします:the men that live next door。 who か which を使います:My brother, who lives in Osaka, is a student. × My brother, that lives in Osaka, …

5. 副詞の that

It is not that far.

6. so that(〜ように)

Let's take a photo so that we can remember today. so that のあとには、can, will, could, would がよく来ます。

Let's take a photo to remember today. I will call you so that you can wake up.

7. That is why …(だから〜)

That is why I know where everything is. 理由を言うときは、That is because …

That"

That is a good idea. (13.5)、That is cheaper than I thought. (13.21)、That was fun.

9. that と what

- What I want is a pen.(私がほしいのはペンです) - The pen that I want is on the table.(私がほしいペンはテーブルの上にあります)

× That I want is a pen.

(Common Mistakes):

- The book I read it is interesting. → The book (that) I read is interesting. - The man lives next door is a teacher. → The man that lives next door is a teacher. - The cheese for that you were looking is here. → The cheese that you were looking for is here. - I want that you come. → I want you to come. - She said me that she was tired. → She told me that she was tired. / She said that she was tired. - He said that "I am tired." → He said that he was tired. / He said, "I am tired." - That I want is a pen. → What I want is a pen. - Look at this tall building that over there. → Look at that tall building over there. - My brother, that lives in Osaka, is a student. → My brother, who lives in Osaka, is a student. - I like that songs. → I like those songs. / I like that song. - Everything which she told me was true. → Everything that she told me was true. - She said that she is tired.(昨日の話のとき)→ She said that she was tired.

Section E (文化的な注釈 / Cultural Note)

Can I have that one, please? と言いながら指さすか、that one over there と言います。 日本語の「そうですね」「すごいですね」「なるほど」に当たる言葉です:That's right.(その通り)、That's great!(すごい)、That makes sense.(なるほど)、That's too bad.(それは残念です)。 - 店では、Will that be all? That's all, thank you. - 電話では、自分は This is Kenta.(健太です)と名乗り、相手には Who is this? イギリスでは Is that Kenta? - 人について聞くときの Who is that? 名前を聞くときは、Who is she? や、Do you know her name? - That's it! - 会話では、think that や glad that の that を言わないほうが自然です。 - It's not that bad.

Section F (文学的引用 / Literary Quote)

広く引用される "By any other name" ではなく、確認した二つの版はどちらも "By any other word" となっています。

Part F-A (対照テキスト / Interlinear Text)

What's (= What is) 何が in の中に a (—) name 名前?

That (もの) which (関係詞) we 私たちが call 呼ぶ a (—) rose バラ

By (—) any どんな other 別の word 言葉で would (—) smell 香る as 同じくらい sweet 甘く.

So そう Romeo ロミオも would (—) , were もし〜だったら he 彼が not ない Romeo ロミオ called と呼ばれ,

Retain 保つ that (あの) dear いとしい perfection 完全さを which (関係詞) he 彼が owes 持っている

Without なしでも that (その) title 称号.

Part F-B (完全な訳 / Complete Translation)

What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet. So Romeo would, were he not Romeo called, retain that dear perfection which he owes without that title.

Part F-C (文学的分析 / Literary Analysis)

- 一つ目の "That which we call a rose" の that は指示代名詞で、which と組んで「〜するもの」という意味になります。 - 二つ目の "that dear perfection"、三つ目の "that title" の that は、指示詞です。

Part F-D (文法的注釈 / Grammatical Notes)

- What's = What is:What's in a name? - That which we call a rose:現代英語では、The thing that we call a rose か What we call a rose - By any other word:多くの引用では name ですが、Folger 版と Project Gutenberg 版はどちらも word です。 - would smell as sweet:smell + 形容詞(sweet)。 as sweet のあとには、as it does now が省略されています。 - were he not Romeo called:if he were not called Romeo If he were not called Romeo - that dear perfection:that + 名詞の指示詞(Section D の規則2)。 - which he owes:which - without that title:title = 称号、ここでは名前(Romeo、Montague)を指します。

Section D (会話の文法説明 / Grammar Notes for the Dialogue)

- that + 名詞(指示詞):that fruit stall (13.16)、that basket of apples (13.19)。 - that one:Yes, that one. - 関係詞(主語):the one that has the red sign (13.17) — that は has の主語の役目をしているので、省略できません。× the one has the red sign - 接続詞:I hope that they have fresh apples. (13.18) — 主語が I と they で別なので、hope to ではなく hope that です。 I promise that they are very sweet. (13.20)、I'm glad that you know this place so well. (13.25)、The seller said that it comes from a small farm. - 指示詞(単独):That is cheaper than I thought. than I thought は比べる文です。 - 関係詞(目的語):The cheese that I want to buy for my mother (13.22) — that は buy の目的語の役目です。 want to buy は Lesson 12 の復習です。 - Is that far from here? - 副詞:it is not that far (13.24) — 「それほど遠くない」。 - That is why … - 関係詞(前置詞):the cheese that you were looking for (13.27) — 前置詞 for は文の最後に残します。× the cheese for that you were looking - that's the one (13.28) — that's = that is。the one = the cheese。 - so that:Let's take a photo so that we can remember today. so that のあとは、can を使うのが普通です。 - That was fun.

Pronunciation Guide

this, the, there, they も同じ /ð/ です。

Look at that! /lʊk æt ˈðæt/、That is my bag. It is not that far. I think that he is kind. /aɪ ˈθɪŋk ðət hi ɪz ˈkaɪnd/ - 関係詞の that も、普通は弱く発音します:the book that I read /ðə ˈbʊk ðət aɪ ˈrɛd/ — 強調したいときは強い形になります。

I think that they have fresh apples. /aɪ ˈθɪŋk ðət ðeɪ hæv ˈfrɛʃ ˈæpəlz/ は、/θ/ と /ð/ の練習になります。

短縮形:that is → that's /ðæts/ 「ザッツ」。 That's why … /ˈðæts ˈwaɪ/

I think that that book is the one that I read. /aɪ ˈθɪŋk ðət ˈðæt ˈbʊk ɪz ðə ˈwʌn ðət aɪ ˈrɛd/ — 一つ目の that は接続詞なので弱く /ðət/、二つ目は指示詞なので強く /ðæt/、三つ目は関係詞なので弱く /ðət/ です。
