Lesson 14 English for Japanese Speakers: A Latinum Institute Language Course

Introduction

This is for you. / She cooks dinner for her family. What is it for? / a room for studying. I have lived here for two years. Thanks for your help. / I'm sorry for being late. / famous for its mountains. 5. 動詞とセットになる for:wait for(待つ)、look for(探す)、pay for(代金を払う)、ask for(頼む)。 6. 値段・交換、「〜として」、雇い主:bought it for twenty dollars(二十ドルで)、for breakfast(朝食として)、work for a company(会社で働く)。

ほかに、for + 人 + to + 動詞(It is hard for me to wake up early)、行き先を表す for(the train for Toronto)、賛成を表す for(for the new rule)、「〜にしては」の for(cheap for a cake like this)も登場します。

- 「母に買う」「母のために買う」:for my mother - 「二年間住んでいる」「二年(の間)」:for two years - 「手伝ってくれて、ありがとう」「遅れてすみません」:Thanks for your help. / I'm sorry for being late. - 「バスを待つ」「ホテルを探す」:wait for the bus / look for a hotel

× wait the bus、× look a hotel

Thanks for coming.(× Thanks for to come.)

(Key Takeaways):

- for は、受け取る人(for you)、用途(What is it for?)、期間(for two years)、理由(thanks for…)、値段(for twenty dollars)などを表す - for のあとは、名詞・代名詞・-ing:Thanks for coming. × for to come - 期間の for は、長さを言う(for two years)。始まりの時点を言うときは since(since 2024) - 「during」は、決まった期間や出来事の「間に」:during the summer。数字の長さには for を使う:× during two years - wait for、look for、pay for、ask for は、for まで一組で覚える。× wait you、× look a hotel - 物を渡すときは to(give it to her)、誰かのために作る・買うときは for(buy it for her) - for + 人 + to + 動詞:It is hard for me to wake up early.(Lesson 12 の復習) - 感謝・おわびは for のあとに -ing か名詞:Thank you for waiting. Sorry for being late. - for には「雇い主」の意味もある:work for a company(会社で働く)。場所は at:work at a bank - 発音は、強い形 /fɔːr/ と弱い形 /fər/。

Section D (文法説明 / Grammatical Explanation)

- 名詞:for breakfast (14.6)、for the bus (14.14) - 代名詞:for you (14.1)、for me (14.2)。代名詞は目的格です:× for I、× for he → for me, for him - -ing:for being late (14.14)、Thanks for coming. - 不定詞(to + 動詞)は、for のあとに直接置けません:× Thanks for to come. → Thanks for coming.

2. 受け取る人・利益の for(〜のために、〜への)

This is for you. (14.1)、She cooks dinner for her family. (14.7)、a present for his mother (14.15)、furniture for schools (14.13)。

- 物を相手に渡す動作には to:give it to her、send it to him、show it to them、tell it to me - 誰かのために作る・買う・探す・取っておく動作には for:buy a present for her、cook dinner for us、save money for him、find a seat for her

× I bought a present to my mother.

What is it for? (14.5)、a room for studying、a knife for cutting bread。

- 物の用途:for + 名詞 または for + -ing:This pot is for soup. / This pot is for cooking soup. (Lesson 12):I went to the shop to buy bread. I went to the shop for bread. × I went to the shop for buy bread. - What is it for? × For what is it?(改まった言い方では For what purpose is it used?

4. 期間の for

I have lived here for two years. (14.8)、I waited for the bus for forty minutes. (14.14)、He saved money for ten months (14.15)。

- for + 長さ:for two years、for forty minutes、for a long time - since + 始まりの時点:since 2024、since Monday。I have lived here since 2024. I have lived here for two years.(今も住んでいる)。 I lived there for two years.(今は住んでいない) - during + 決まった期間・出来事:during the summer、during the meeting。数字の長さには during を使いません:× during two years → for two years - 日本語の「二年間」の「間」に当たるのが for。

- thank + 人 + for:Thanks for your help. (14.3)、Thank you for coming. - sorry for:I'm sorry for being late. (14.14)。I'm sorry I was late. - famous for:Vancouver is famous for its beautiful mountains. (14.12)。× famous by、× famous of - for のあとは名詞か -ing:× Thank you for to help me. → Thank you for helping me. Thank you for waiting. / Sorry to keep you waiting. × Thank you for your waiting.

- wait for:Wait for me. (14.2)。× Wait me. - look for(探す):We are looking for a small hotel. (14.10)。× looking a hotel。 - pay for(代金を払う):I paid for the ticket. - ask for(頼む):She asked for water. - search for、apply for、care for なども同じ形です。

I bought this bag for twenty dollars. (14.9)。 × to twenty dollars、× by twenty dollars

We have rice for breakfast. (14.6)。ほかに、for lunch、for dinner、for dessert、for example(たとえば)、for free(無料で)、for sale(売り物の)。

9. for + 人 + to + 動詞

It is hard for me to wake up early. (14.11)。 It is difficult to learn

- It is important for children to sleep.(子どもが眠ることは大切だ) - × It is hard to me to wake up. → for me - 主語が同じなら for は要りません:I want to go. I want you to come.

I work for a company that makes furniture. (14.13)。 I work at a bank. / I work in an office.

乗り物や出発の行き先を表します:the train for Toronto(トロント行きの電車)、She left for Tokyo.(東京に向けて出発した)。 The train to Toronto

12. 賛成の for

Most students are for the new rule.(ほとんどの学生が新しい規則に賛成です)。反対は against です:for or against(賛成か反対か)。

That is cheap for a cake like this. (14.25)。 It is cold for May.(五月にしては寒い)。

14. 接続詞の for(文章語)

He stayed home, for he was tired.

(Common Mistakes):

- I have lived here since two years. → I have lived here for two years. - I studied English during three years. → I studied English for three years. - I bought a present to my mother. → I bought a present for my mother. - Please wait me. → Please wait for me. - We are looking a hotel. → We are looking for a hotel. - Thank you to help me. → Thank you for helping me. - Thank you for your waiting. → Thank you for waiting. - I went to the shop for buy bread. → I went to the shop to buy bread. / I went to the shop for bread. - It is hard to me to wake up early. → It is hard for me to wake up early. - I'm sorry for I was late. → I'm sorry for being late. / I'm sorry I was late. - Vancouver is famous by its mountains. → Vancouver is famous for its mountains. - I paid twenty dollars to this bag. → I paid twenty dollars for this bag. - Thanks for to come. → Thanks for coming.

Section E (文化的な注釈 / Cultural Note)

- 贈り物を渡すときは、This is for you. Here is a little something for you.(ささやかなものですが)や、I hope you like it.(気に入ってもらえるといいのですが)と言うのが普通です。 For here or to go?(店内でお召し上がりですか、お持ち帰りですか)と聞きます。here は店内、to go は持ち帰りです。「For here, please.」「To go, please.」 - How long have you lived here? という質問には、For two years. や、Since 2024. For example, … - Is this for me? や What is it for?

Section F (文学的引用 / Literary Quote)

Part F-A (対照テキスト / Interlinear Text)

Any どんな man's 人の death 死も diminishes 小さくする me 私を,

because なぜなら I 私は am である involved 巻き込まれている in (に) mankind 人類;

and そして therefore だから never 決して〜ない send 人をやる to (不定詞) know 知る for (のために) whom 誰 the (—) bell 鐘が tolls 鳴る;

it それは tolls 鳴る for (のために) thee あなた.

Part F-B (完全な訳 / Complete Translation)

Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

Part F-C (文学的分析 / Literary Analysis)

ダンの論理は、「誰の死でも、私に関係がある(because I am involved in mankind)」というものです。

Part F-D (文法的注釈 / Grammatical Notes)

- any man's death:any + 名詞は、「どんな〜でも」の意味。 - because I am involved in mankind:be involved in = 〜にかかわっている、巻き込まれている。 - never send to know:命令の否定形です。 Never send someone to find out と言います。 - for whom the bell tolls:for は前置詞、whom は for の目的語です。 現代の会話では、who the bell tolls for と言い、for が文末に残ります(Section D の規則3の What is it for? for whom / for thee

Pronunciation Guide

- 普通の文の中では、for は弱く短く、「ファ」のように発音します:a gift for you /ə ˈɡɪft fər ju/、cooks dinner for her family /ˈkʊks ˈdɪnər fər hər ˈfæməli/、wait for me /ˈweɪt fər ˈmi/ - 文末に来る for は、強く発音します:What is it for? /ˈwʌt ɪz ɪt ˈfɔːr/、Good things are worth waiting for. /ɡʊd θɪŋz ɑr ˈwɜrθ ˈweɪtɪŋ ˈfɔːr/ - 次の語と続けて言います:for a long time /fər ə ˈlɔŋ ˈtaɪm/ は「ファラ ロング タイム」のようにつながります。

I waited for her for four hours. /aɪ ˈweɪtɪd fər hɜr fər ˈfɔːr ˈaʊərz/ — 二つの for は弱く /fər/、最後の four は強く /fɔːr/ です。

Thank you for waiting for me for a long time. /ˈθæŋk ju fər ˈweɪtɪŋ fər ˈmi fər ə ˈlɔŋ ˈtaɪm/ — 三つの for はすべて弱く /fər/ です。
