Lesson 15 English for Japanese Speakers: A Latinum Institute Language Course

Introduction

1. 助動詞の do(疑問・否定):Do you like tea? / I don't know. 2. 本動詞の do:I do my homework. / We did the dishes. 3. 代動詞の do:He speaks English better than I do.

この課では、ほかに、強調の do(I do like that song!)、命令文の Don't ...、付加疑問(You like tea, don't you?)、現在進行形の doing(What are you doing?)、過去分詞の done(I have done my homework)も登場します。

- do /duː/:原形(I do, you do, we do, they do) - does /dʌz/:三人称単数の現在(he does, she does, it does) - did /dɪd/:過去形(主語に関係なく did) - done /dʌn/:過去分詞(have done) - doing /ˈduːɪŋ/:-ing の形(is doing)

英語では、それぞれ別の動詞や決まった組み合わせを使います:study、do the laundry、take a walk、take a photo。そのため、日本語の「〜をする」の感覚で do をつけると、間違いになります:× do a walk、× do a photo、× do a mistake(正しくは make a mistake)。

Do you like tea?(do が主語の前に出る) - 否定:I don't know.(do + not が動詞の前に入る)

三人称単数の -s と、過去の形は、do/does/did が引き受けます:Does she live here?(× Does she lives here?)、He didn't know.(× He didn't knew.)

Does she live here? — Yes, she does.

(Key Takeaways):

- do には三つの働きがある:助動詞(Do you like tea?)、本動詞(I do my homework)、代動詞(than I do / So do I) - 現在の疑問・否定は do/does + 原形、過去は did + 原形:Does she live here? / He didn't know. - do/does/did のあとの動詞は、必ず原形:× Does she lives? × Did you went? - be、can、will などがある文には do を入れない:Are you tired?(× Do you tired?)、Can you swim?(× Do you can swim?) Who lives here?(× Who does live here?) Yes, I do. / No, she doesn't. / Yes, I did. Don't you like sushi? — 好きなら Yes, I do. 好きでなければ No, I don't. - 本動詞の do は、する・行う:do homework、do the dishes、do your best。新しく作るものは make:make a cake、make a mistake - 同意は So do I.(私も)/ Neither do I.(私も〜ない)。

Section D (文法説明 / Grammatical Explanation)

1. do の形

- 原形 do:I do my homework. (15.1)、Where do your parents live? (15.6)。I、you、we、they と複数の名詞が主語のとき - 三人称単数現在 does:Does she live here? (15.4)、so does his wife (15.12)。he、she、it と単数の名詞が主語のとき。× He do his homework. → He does his homework. - 過去形 did:We did the dishes after dinner. (15.7)、Did you do anything yesterday? (15.10)。主語に関係なく did です - 過去分詞 done:I have done all my homework. (15.14)。Lesson 14 の have lived と同じ現在完了の形です - -ing の形 doing:What are you doing? (15.16)、Thank you for doing them. does の発音は /dʌz/、done の発音は /dʌn/ で、do /duː/ とは母音が違います

- Yes/No の疑問文:Do/Does/Did + 主語 + 動詞の原形 ...? Do you like tea? Does she live here? What do you do? (15.2)、Where do your parents live? (15.6)。× Where your parents live? - 動詞は原形:× Does she lives here? × Did you went there? → Does she live here? / Did you go there?

- Who lives here?(誰がここに住んでいますか。)× Who does live here? - What happened?(何がありましたか。) - 比べましょう:Who do you like?(あなたは誰が好きですか。)

I don't know. (15.3)、He doesn't drink coffee in the evening. I didn't know that. (15.22) - don't = do not、doesn't = does not、didn't = did not の短縮形です。 → He doesn't drink coffee. - 過去の印も、did に移ります:× I didn't knew. → I didn't know. × I no know. → I don't know.

be、can、will、must などの助動詞がある文には、do を入れません:

- be:I am not happy. Are you tired?(× Do you tired?、× I don't am happy.) - can:Can you swim? I can't swim.(× Do you can swim?、× I don't can swim.) - will:I won't be late.(will not の短縮形が won't です。× I don't will be late.) Do you have time? / I don't have time.

- Does she live here? — Yes, she does. (15.5) / No, she doesn't. - Do you like tea? — Yes, I do. / No, I don't. - Did you enjoy the dinner? — Yes, I did. (15.21) / No, I didn't. - × Yes, I am.(be の答えです)、× Yes, I like.(不自然です) - do は文末にあるので、強く /duː/ と発音します

Yes / No

- Don't you like sushi?(寿司は好きではないのですか。)

6. 強調の do

- I do like that song! (15.9)、I do want to help. She does like it. / I did like it. 、Do be careful.(本当に気をつけてね。)

Don't worry. Don't be late. (15.29)。× Not worry.

- He speaks English better than I do. (15.11)。この do は speak English の代わりです - 同意:So + do/does/did + 主語(〜も同じです)。Tom plays the piano, and so does his wife. (15.12)、So do I. (15.28) - 否定の同意:Neither + do/does/did + 主語(〜もしません)。I don't like cheese. — Neither do I. - 会話では、Me too. / Me neither. I am tired. — So am I. / I can swim. You like coffee, don't you? / She lives here, doesn't she? / You don't like cheese, do you?

- I do my homework. (15.1)、We did the dishes. (15.7)、Did you do anything yesterday? (15.10) - よく使う組み合わせ:do homework(宿題をする)、do the dishes(皿洗いをする)、do the laundry(洗濯をする)、do the shopping(買い物をする)、do the cooking(料理をする)、do exercise(運動をする)、do your best(全力を尽くす)、do a favor(頼みを聞く)、do business(商売をする) - do well:うまくいく、よい成績を取る。you will do well in the exam (15.15) - do something(何かする)、do nothing(何もしない)、do anything(疑問文・否定文で「何か」「何も」)。Did you do anything yesterday? (15.10) の anything は、疑問文なので some ではなく any の仲間です - what to do:何をすべきか(Lesson 12 の to + 動詞の原形)。I don't know what to do about this problem. (15.13)

What do you do? Did you do anything yesterday?

- What do you do? (15.16) と言います - Do you do yoga?(ヨガをしますか。)

10. do と make

do homework、do the dishes、do the laundry、do your best、do exercise - make:新しいものを作り出す、または決まった組み合わせ。make a cake、make tea、make a mistake、make a decision、make a plan、make a reservation、make a phone call - これは目安で、組み合わせは一つずつ覚える必要があります。辞書の例文で確かめましょう - 日本語の「〜をする」から do を選ばないようにしましょう:× do a mistake → make a mistake、× do a photo → take a photo、× do a party → have a party、× do a question → ask a question、× do a trip → take a trip

I'm doing the dishes. (15.17)、What are you doing? (15.16)。 I do the dishes every night. (15.19)。 Thank you for doing them. (15.20)。Lesson 14 の for + -ing です - 現在完了:have/has + done。I have done all my homework. (15.14)。 × I have did my homework.

- What do you do?:お仕事は何ですか。(15.2) - How do you do?:はじめまして(改まったあいさつ)。返事も同じ How do you do? です - How are you doing?:お元気ですか。 (15.29) - What can I do for you?:ご用件は何でしょうか、何をいたしましょうか。Lesson 14 の for です - That will do.:それで十分です。

(Common Mistakes):

- Do you can swim? → Can you swim? - Do you tired? → Are you tired? - I don't can swim. → I can't swim. - She doesn't likes tea. → She doesn't like tea. - Does she lives here? → Does she live here? - Did you went there? → Did you go there? - He do his homework. → He does his homework. - I not like cheese. / I no like cheese. → I don't like cheese. - Where you live? → Where do you live? - Who does live here? → Who lives here? - Yes, I like. → Yes, I do. - Don't you like sushi? — Yes, I don't. → Don't you like sushi? — No, I don't. - What do you doing? → What are you doing? - I don't know what do. → I don't know what to do. - So I do. → So do I. - I did a mistake. → I made a mistake. - I will do a photo. → I will take a photo. - Let's do a party. → Let's have a party. - I have did my homework. → I have done my homework.

Section E (文化的な注釈 / Cultural Note)

好きでなければ、No, I don't. - Do you mind if I open the window?(窓を開けてもいいですか)の mind は、「いやだと思う」という意味です。 No, I don't mind. や No, not at all. - What do you do? 学生なら、I'm a student. や I study English. - How do you do? ふだんは Nice to meet you. How are you doing? And you? Can I help? や Let me do the dishes. You don't have to do that. と断ることもありますが、I'd like to. - Well done! 英語では to-do list(やることリスト)で、DIY も do it yourself(自分でやる)の略です。 - Thank you for having me.(お招きいただき、ありがとうございます)のあとには、I had a great time. や I'll do the dishes next time!

Section F (文学的引用 / Literary Quote)

Lewis Carroll ルイス・キャロル, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland 『不思議の国のアリス』(1865), 第1章 "Down the Rabbit-Hole"(うさぎ穴をおりて)。

Part F-A (対照テキスト / Interlinear Text)

And そして here ここで Alice アリスは began 〜し始めた to (不定詞) get なり rather かなり sleepy 眠く, and そして went 続けた on (—) saying 言うのを to (に) herself 自分自身, in (で) a (—) dreamy 夢見るような sort 種類の of (の) way 様子,

Do (—) cats 猫は eat 食べますか bats コウモリを?' and そして sometimes ときどき, 'Do (—) bats コウモリは eat 食べますか cats 猫を?'

for というのは, you あなた see ご存じのとおり, as 〜ので she 彼女は couldn't (= could not) できなかった answer 答える either どちらの question 問いにも, it それは didn't (= did not) 〜なかった much あまり matter 問題で, which どちらの way 言い方で she 彼女が put 言う it それを.

Part F-B (完全な訳 / Complete Translation)

And here Alice began to get rather sleepy, and went on saying to herself, in a dreamy sort of way, 'Do cats eat bats? Do cats eat bats?' and sometimes, 'Do bats eat cats?' for, you see, as she couldn't answer either question, it didn't much matter which way she put it.

Part F-C (文学的分析 / Literary Analysis)

と Do bats eat cats?

もう一つ、この文には、否定の did + not があります:it didn't much matter。

Part F-D (文法的注釈 / Grammatical Notes)

- began to get sleepy:begin + to + 動詞の原形 (Lesson 12)。 「眠くなり始めた」 - went on saying:go on + -ing = 〜し続ける。 say to oneself = 独り言を言う - in a dreamy sort of way:夢見るような様子で。dreamy = 夢見心地の - Do cats eat bats?:疑問文をつくる助動詞の do。 you see は「ご存じのとおり」という、語りかける言葉です - couldn't = could not:can の過去形 + not。 「どちらの問いにも(答えられない)」 - it didn't much matter:did + not + 動詞の原形 matter。 現代英語では、it didn't matter much の語順もよく使います - which way she put it:which way = どちらの言い方で。

Section D (会話の文法説明 / Grammar Notes for the Dialogue)

- 現在進行形の doing:What are you doing? (15.16)、I'm doing the dishes. (15.17)。 What do you usually do on Sundays? こちらは「ふだんの習慣」を聞いています - 本動詞の do(する):do the dishes (15.19)、do that (15.18)、do the same (15.25)、do everything (15.27)。do the dishes は「皿洗いをする」の決まった組み合わせです - 否定の don't have to:You don't have to do that. (15.18)。 最初の don't は助動詞の do、あとの do は本動詞です - 強調の do:I do want to help. (15.19)。 do を強く言います - for + -ing:thank you for doing them (15.20)、Thank you for having me. (15.30)。 Did you enjoy the dinner? — Yes, I did. (15.20, 15.21)。 答えも did です - 現在の否定:I don't usually eat cheese. (15.21)。 I didn't know that. (15.22)、Why didn't you tell me? (15.22)、I didn't want to be rude. (15.23)。 What do you usually do on Sundays? (15.24)。最初の do が助動詞、最後の do が本動詞です - 三人称単数の does(本動詞):Maria does the same. (15.25)、Kenta does his homework (15.26)。主語が三人称単数なので、do ではなく does です - 所有代名詞 mine:I do mine on Sunday night. (15.26)。 I do everything at the last minute (15.27)。 Last week I did my homework (15.28) は過去形です - So do I:So do I, sometimes! (15.28)。 I do everything at the last minute × So I do. (15.29)。done は do の過去分詞で、ほめ言葉として単独で使います - 否定の命令:don't do any more work (15.29)。 any は否定の中で使う「少しも」で、any more work は「これ以上の仕事」です - will do:I will do the dishes again next time! (15.30)。

Pronunciation Guide

does は dose /doʊs/(服用量)とは別の語です。 - doing /ˈduːɪŋ/:do /duː/ の長い母音に、-ing /ɪŋ/ が続きます。

Do you like tea? /də ju ˈlaɪk ˈtiː/。 Yes, I do. /jɛs aɪ ˈduː/。No, I don't. What do you do? /ˈwʌt də ju ˈduː/。 I do like that song! /aɪ ˈduː ˈlaɪk ðæt ˈsɔŋ/。 He speaks English better than I do. /hi ˈspiks ˈɪŋɡlɪʃ ˈbɛtər ðən aɪ ˈduː/。

- Yes/No の疑問文は、文末で上がります:Does she live here? Where do your parents live? ↘

Do you do yoga? /də ju ˈduː ˈjoʊɡə/ — 最初の do は弱く /də/、二つ目の do は強く /duː/ です。

I didn't do the dishes, but I did do the laundry.
