Come with me. / I live with my family. I write with a pen. / We opened the door with this key. the girl with long hair / coffee with milk。 She answered with a smile. / I will cut them with care. shaking with cold / in bed with a cold。 6. 動詞や形容詞とセットになる with:agree with(賛成する)、play with(遊ぶ)、talk with(話す)、help me with(〜を手伝う)、share it with(〜と分ける)、fill it with(〜で満たす)、angry with(〜に怒っている)。
この課では、ほかに、反対の意味の without(〜なしで)、手に持っている様子を足す with a letter in his hand(手に手紙を持って)、疑問文の文末に残る with(Who are you going with?)、手紙の結びの With love も登場します。
- 「友達と行く」:go with my friend(いっしょに行く) - 「友達と私は行く」:My friend and I go.(二人を並べる)
× My friend with I go.
- 「ペンで書く」「鍵でドアを開ける」:with a pen、with a key(手に持って使う道具) - 「バスで行く」「電車で行く」:by bus、by train(乗り物) - 「歩いて行く」:on foot
× go to school with bus by bus です。
英語は、with を使って、名詞のあとに説明を足します:a girl with long hair。
(Lesson 16):with me、with him、with us。× with I、× with he とは言いません。
昔の「逆らって」「離して」の意味は、今も withstand(耐える)、withdraw(引き下がる)、withhold(差し控える)といった語に残っています。ドイツ語の wider(〜に逆らって)と同じ系統の語です。
要点 (Key Takeaways):
- with は、同伴(with me)、道具(with a pen)、特徴(with long hair)、様子(with a smile)、原因(with cold)などを表す - 並べるときの「と」は and:My friend and I go. × My friend with I - 手に持って使う道具は with:write with a pen。乗り物は by:go by bus。× with bus - 名詞のあとに with + 名詞を置くと、特徴や中身の説明になる:a girl with long hair / coffee with milk - 前置詞のあとは目的格:with me、with him、with us。× with I(Lesson 16) - 人に賛成するときは agree with、案や計画に同意するときは agree to:I agree with you. / I agree to the plan. - 動詞や形容詞とセットの with は、まとめて覚える:play with、talk with、help ... with、angry with、happy with - with の反対は without:I can't do it without you. Who are you going with?(Lesson 14 の What is it for? With love, / With best wishes, - 発音は /wɪð/。

- 名詞:with a pen (17.5)、with this key (17.7)、with a smile (17.10) - 代名詞:with me (17.1)、with you (17.2)、with us (17.8)。代名詞は目的格です:× with I、× with he → with me, with him(Lesson 16) - -ing の形も来ます:She left without saying a word.(言葉を言わずに出ていった)。
2. 同伴・相手の with(〜と、〜といっしょに)
Come with me. (17.1)、Is Maria with you? (17.2)、I live with my family. (17.3)、go to school with us (17.11)。
I went to the park with my friend. My friend and I went to the park.(Lesson 3)。× My friend with I went to the park. We went with Maria.
3. 道具・手段の with(〜で、〜を使って)
I write with a pen. (17.5)、We opened the door with this key. (17.7)、My brother cut the cake with a knife (17.14)。
- with のあとの名詞には、a や the、this、my などがつきます:× write with pen → write with a pen - 乗り物と、連絡の手段は、with ではなく by です:go by bus、go by train、go by car、by plane、by taxi、by phone、by e-mail。× go with bus - 歩いて行くときは on foot です:I go to school on foot. 自転車は by bicycle も on my bicycle も使えます。× with my bicycle - 「手で」は by hand(機械ではなく、人の手で作った):made by hand。ほかに、with my hands(両手を使って)とも言います
4. 特徴・持ち物・中身の with(〜を持った、〜のある、〜入りの)
- 特徴:the girl with long hair (17.6)、a man with a beard(ひげのある男の人) - 持ち物:the man with the black bag (17.12)、a woman with a baby(赤ちゃんを連れた女の人) - 中身:coffee with milk (17.4)、a sandwich with cheese (Genre) - 建物や部屋:a house with a garden(庭のある家)、a room with a view(眺めのいい部屋) - 日本語は「長い髪の女の子」と、説明を前に置きます。 × a long hair girl(Lesson 11 の have を使って the girl who has long hair とも言えますが、with のほうが短いです) - 着ている服は with ではなく in です:the woman in the red dress(赤いドレスを着た女の人)。
5. 様子・態度の with(〜をもって、〜で)
She answered with a smile. (17.10)、I will cut them with care. (Genre)。
- 副詞のかわりになります:with care = carefully、with ease = easily、with a loud voice = loudly - ほかに、with pleasure(喜んで)、with interest(興味をもって)、with joy(喜びをもって) - with + 名詞のほうが、ていねいで、文章に向いた言い方です。
6. 原因の with(〜で、〜のせいで)
She was shaking with cold. (17.15)、He is in bed with a cold. (17.11)。
- 体:shaking with cold(寒さで震える)、in bed with a cold(風邪で寝ている) - 感情:jump with joy(喜んで飛び上がる)、red with anger(怒りで真っ赤になる) - この使い方は、決まった組み合わせが多いです。× shaking by cold、× in bed by a cold - 日本語の「寒さで震える」の「で」は、with です
- agree with(〜に賛成する):I agree with you. (17.8)。× I agree to you. I agree to the plan. - play with(〜と遊ぶ):The children played with the dog. (17.9) - talk with(〜と話す):I talked with my teacher. 話し相手に向かって話すときは talk to も使います - help ... with(〜を手伝う):Can you help me with my homework? (17.13)。 × Please help me my homework. - share ... with(〜と分ける):shared it with everyone (17.14) - fill ... with(〜で満たす):we filled her cup with hot tea (17.15)。ほかに、cover ... with(〜でおおう) - 感情の形容詞:angry with(人に怒っている)、happy with(〜に満足している)、satisfied with、busy with(〜で忙しい) - married:He married a nurse.(彼は看護師と結婚した)。× He married with a nurse. get married to も使います
8. 反対の without(〜なしで)
with の反対は without です:I can't do it without you. (17.13)。
- without + 名詞:coffee without sugar(砂糖なしのコーヒー) - without + -ing:She left without saying a word. × with out - 否定の not と重ねません:× without not → without
- with a letter in his hand (17.12):「手に手紙を持って」 - with sand in our shoes (Genre):「靴に砂をつけたまま」 - She sat with her eyes closed.(彼女は目を閉じて座っていた) - He slept with the window open.(彼は窓を開けたまま寝た)
Who else is going with you? (Genre)、Who are you going with? Lesson 14 の What is it for?
With whom are you going? と言いますが、会話ではほとんど使いません - × With who are you going?

How do you take your coffee?(コーヒーはどうしますか)と聞かれたら、With milk, no sugar.(ミルクだけ、砂糖なし)や、Black, please.(ブラックで)と答えます。 Would you like fries with that?(それにポテトもいかがですか)とよく聞かれます。 Do you want to come with us?(いっしょに来る?) Would you like to join us?(ご一緒にいかがですか)と言います。 Can I sit with you?(ここに座ってもいい?)、Do you want to eat lunch with us?(いっしょにお昼を食べる?) What's wrong with you? 優しく聞くなら、What's the matter?(どうしたの)や、Are you OK?(大丈夫?) 「AとB」を並べる「と」は and です。「日本語と英語を勉強する」は、study Japanese and English です(× study Japanese with English)。 - 乗り物は by(by bus、by train)、歩きは on foot と言います。

William Wordsworth ウィリアム・ワーズワース, "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud"(通称 "Daffodils"『水仙』)(1807;1815 年に改訂)。
For なぜなら oft しばしば when とき on (に) my 私の couch 長椅子 I 私が lie 横になる In (の) vacant ぼんやりした or または in (の) pensive 物思いの mood 気分, They それらは flash ぱっと現れる upon (に) that その inward 内なる eye 目 Which (関係詞) is である the (—) bliss 至福 of (の) solitude 孤独, And そして then そのとき my 私の heart 心は with (で) pleasure 喜び fills 満ちる, And そして dances 踊る with (と) the (—) Daffodils 水仙.
For oft when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude, And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the Daffodils.
一回目は、my heart with pleasure fills です。普通の語順は、my heart fills with pleasure(私の心は喜びで満たされる)です。
二回目は、dances with the Daffodils です。 play with the dog (17.9) と同じ形で、動詞のあとに with + 相手が来ます。
- For oft when on my couch I lie:For = というのも(接続詞、古い用法)。oft = often の古い形で、詩に使われます。 I lie は現在形で、習慣を表します - In vacant or in pensive mood:vacant = 空っぽの、ぼんやりした。 in が二回あります - They flash upon that inward eye:They は、前の連の水仙を指します。 inward eye = 心の目、心の中で思い浮かべる目 - Which is the bliss of solitude:Which は、前の that inward eye を受ける関係詞です。 the bliss of solitude の of は、Lesson 5 の of です - And then my heart with pleasure fills:then = そのとき。heart = 心。with pleasure = 喜びで。 普通の語順は、my heart fills with pleasure です。ここの fills は自動詞のように使われ、「満ちる」の意味です - And dances with the Daffodils:dances = 踊る。 with the Daffodils = 水仙といっしょに。

17.28 Lucas: I won't laugh! Bring a coat, though. Last time Maria was shaking with cold.

17.16 Lucas: Hi, Kenta! Are you here with Maria today?
17.17 Kenta: No, I'm alone today. I'm studying English with a dictionary.
17.18 Lucas: Hard work! Would you like coffee with milk?
17.19 Kenta: Yes, please. And a sandwich with cheese.
17.20 Lucas: Here you are. Tomorrow Maria and I are going to the beach. Do you want to come with us?
17.21 Kenta: I'd love to! Who else is going with you?
17.22 Lucas: Anna, a girl with long hair, and her brother Tom. He is the tall man with the big dog.
17.23 Kenta: A big dog! I often played with my uncle's dog in Osaka, so I love dogs.

- 同伴・相手の with:Are you here with Maria today? (17.16)、Do you want to come with us? (17.20)、Who else is going with you? (17.21)、Will you sing with me at the beach? (17.26)、I will sing with you (17.27)。 代名詞は、us、you、me のように目的格です(Lesson 16) - 疑問文の with:Who else is going with you? Who are you going with? のように、with の目的語を Who にして、with を文末に残します(Section D の規則 10) - 道具の with:I'm studying English with a dictionary. (17.17)、You can cut the apples with this knife. (17.24)。a や this がつきます - 中身の with:coffee with milk (17.18)、a sandwich with cheese (17.19)。 with は、ここでは「中身」を表します - 特徴・連れている物の with:a girl with long hair (17.22)、the tall man with the big dog (17.22)。名詞のあとに置いて、「長い髪の」「大きな犬を連れた」と説明します - 相手の with(動詞とセット):I often played with my uncle's dog (17.23)。play with = 〜と遊ぶ。 過去形 played は、Lesson 15 の did と同じように、-ed の形で、主語が I でも he でも同じです - help ... with:Can you help me with the picnic? (17.24)。 × Can you help me the picnic? - 様子の with:I will cut them with care. (17.25)。with care = carefully(気をつけて) - 原因の with:Maria was shaking with cold. (17.28)。 × shaking by cold - 付帯状況の with:we will come home with sand in our shoes (17.30)。with + 名詞 (sand) + 場所 (in our shoes)。「靴に砂が入ったまま」の意味です - 乗り物の by:We will go by bus (17.30)。with ではなく by です。× go with bus。同じ文に、with と by が並んでいるので、使い分けを確かめましょう - 条件の if:I will sing with you if you don't laugh. (17.27)。if のあとは現在形 (don't laugh) で、あとの文は will + 原形です(Lesson 16 の If you come, he will take you to the sea. You can cut (17.24)、I will cut (17.25)、I will sing (17.27)、I won't laugh (17.28)。× I will to sing(Lesson 12 の to は、will のあとには置きません) - love:I'd love to! I would love to come. Do you want to come with us?

- 同じ /ð/ の音:the、this、that、them、then、there も、同じ音で始まります。
- 文の中の with は、ふつう弱く短く言います:coffee with milk /ˈkɔfi wɪð ˈmɪlk/、a girl with long hair /ə ˈgɜrl wɪð ˈlɔŋ ˈhɛr/ - 文末に来る with は、強く言います:Who are you going with? /hu ɑr ju ˈgoʊɪŋ ˈwɪð/ - with the、with them のように、/ð/ が続くときは、速い会話で、二つの /ð/ がほとんど一つの長めの /ð/ に聞こえます:with the dog /wɪð ðə ˈdɔg/
wit は、舌の先を上の歯ぐきにつけて、息を止めます - by /baɪ/ と with /wɪð/ は、まったく違う語ですが、日本語の「で」と訳されて、混ざりやすいです:by bus /baɪ ˈbʌs/、with a pen /wɪð ə ˈpɛn/
Thank you for coming with me. for は Lesson 14 のとおり弱く /fər/、with も弱く /wɪð/、最後の me を強く言います。
