Lesson 18 English for Japanese Speakers: A Latinum Institute Language Course

Introduction

The book is on the table. / a picture on the wall / on the beach。 See you on Monday. / My birthday is on May 5th. Anna reads a book on the train. She is on the phone. / I saw it on TV. a book on history / based on a true story。 6. 動詞や形容詞とセットになる on:depend on(〜しだいだ)、rely on(〜に頼る)、focus on(〜に集中する)。

この課では、ほかに、副詞の on(Put on your coat. / Turn on the light. / Keep on studying.)、反対の off(Turn off the light.)、決まった表現の on time(時間どおりに)、on foot(歩いて)、It's on me(私のおごりです)、Hold on(ちょっと待って)も登場します。

The book is on the table. There is a picture on the wall. - 「月曜日に会う」:See you on Monday. I'm on the bus.

「家に」は at home、「部屋に」は in the room、「駅に」は at the station です。

- 時刻:at ten o'clock - 日・曜日:on Monday / on May 5th - 月・年・季節:in May / in 2026 / in summer

手段を言うときは by bus(Lesson 17)、乗っている場所を言うときは on the bus です。「電話で」も同じで、手段は by phone、話している最中は on the phone です。「テレビで」「ネットで」は、いつも on TV、on the internet です。

on は、asleep(眠って)、alive(生きて)、away(離れて)のような語の中にも残っています。もとの形は、on sleep、on life、on weg(weg は「道」)でした。onto は on + to、upon は up + on です。

要点 (Key Takeaways):

- on は、表面に触れていることを表す:on the table / on the wall / on the sand。壁や天井も on - 日と曜日は on、時刻は at、月・年・季節は in:on Monday / at ten / in May。× in Monday - this、last、next、every のつく日には、前置詞をつけない:next Monday(× on next Monday) - バス・電車・飛行機・船に乗っている状態は on:on the bus / on the train。車とタクシーは in - 乗り物の手段は by(by bus)、歩きは on foot:× by foot - 電話とメディアは on:on the phone / on TV / on the internet。× in TV - 専門的な話題は on、ふつうの会話の「〜について」は about:a book on history / Tell me about it. - 動詞や形容詞とセットの on は、まとめて覚える:depend on / rely on / focus on / based on。× depend of - 副詞の on は、身につける・作動する・続けるを表す:put on a coat / turn on the light / keep on studying。代名詞は間に入る:Put it on.

Section E (文化的な注釈 / Cultural Note)

Lunch is on me.(昼ごはんは私のおごりです)、It's on me.(私が払います)。 It's on me. The next one is on me.(次は私のおごりです)と言うと、感じのよい返事になります。 席が空いているか聞くときは、Is this seat free?(この席、空いていますか)や Is anyone sitting here?(誰か座っていますか)と言います。 Should I come exactly at six?(ちょうど六時に行くべきですか)と聞いてみましょう。 言い方も、May 5th(アメリカ)と the 5th of May(イギリス)で違います。on May 5th も on the 5th of May も使えます。 - 日本の「2階」は、アメリカでは the second floor で、イギリスでは the first floor です。 My room is on the second floor.(私の部屋は2階です)。 I'm on the phone.(電話中です)や Hold on, please.(少しお待ちください)をよく使います。 - 浜辺の言い方は、at the beach と on the beach で感じが違います。at the beach は「浜辺で(という場所で)」、on the beach は「砂浜の上で」です。We had a picnic on the beach. 「電話で」は on the phone と by phone、「テレビで」は on TV、「バスで」は by bus と on the bus と、英語は場面によって分けます。ここまでの課で見た with、by、on を、組み合わせて覚えましょう:write with a pen、go by bus、sing on the beach。

Section F (文学的引用 / Literary Quote)

Edward Lear エドワード・リア, "The Owl and the Pussy-cat"『ふくろうと子猫』(1871)。

Part F-A (対照テキスト / Interlinear Text)

They 彼らは dined 食事をした on (を) mince ひき肉, and そして slices 薄切り of (の) quince マルメロ, Which (関係詞) they 彼らは ate 食べた with (で) a (—) runcible 〈リアの造語〉 spoon スプーン; And そして hand 手 in (を) hand 手, on (の上) the (—) edge 端 of (の) the (—) sand 砂, They 彼らは danced 踊った by (のもとで) the (—) light 光 of (の) the (—) moon 月, The (—) moon 月, The (—) moon 月, They 彼らは danced 踊った by (のもとで) the (—) light 光 of (の) the (—) moon 月.

Part F-B (完全な訳 / Complete Translation)

They dined on mince, and slices of quince, Which they ate with a runcible spoon; And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand, They danced by the light of the moon, The moon, The moon, They danced by the light of the moon.

Part F-C (文学的分析 / Literary Analysis)

二回目は、on the edge of the sand です。

hand in hand, on the edge of the sand The moon, The moon, They danced by the light of the moon

with a runcible spoon の with は、Lesson 17 の道具の with です。by the light of the moon の by は、「〜の光のもとで」という意味で、Lesson 17 の by bus(手段)とは使い方が違います。

Part F-D (文法的注釈 / Grammatical Notes)

- They dined on mince:dined は dine(食事をする)の過去形。 mince = ひき肉(ここでは刻んだ肉) - and slices of quince:slice = 薄切り。 of = 〜の(a cup of tea の of と同じです) - Which they ate with a runcible spoon:Which は、前の mince と slices of quince を受ける関係詞。 with a spoon = スプーンで(Lesson 17 の道具の with)。runcible = リアの造語 - And hand in hand:手をとりあって。hand in hand には、a や the がつきません。副詞のように使う決まった表現です - on the edge of the sand:edge = へり、はし。on the edge of 〜 = 〜のはしに。of = 〜の。the sand = その砂浜 - They danced by the light of the moon:danced = dance の過去形(規則動詞)。by the light of 〜 = 〜の光のもとで。

Section D (会話の文法説明 / Grammar Notes for the Dialogue)

- 時間どおりの on:You're on time. (18.16)。on time = 時間どおりに(Section D の規則 11)。You're は You are の短縮形です - 乗り物の on:Lucas and Anna are already on the bus. (18.16)、we'll go home on the next bus (18.29)。 already は be 動詞のあとに置きます - 接触の on:There is a bag on it. (18.17)、I'll put it on my lap. (18.18)、small boats on the water (18.21)、running on the sand (18.21)、put the blanket on the sand (18.23)、put the basket on the blanket (18.24)。 There is a bag、there are small boats - 機器の on:Are you on your phone again? (18.19)、checking the weather on my phone (18.20)。 Are you on your phone? は、携帯を見ているのか、という軽い問いかけです - 左右の on:The beach is on the left. (18.19)。× in the left - 曜日の on:It says rain on Sunday (18.20)、On Monday I will tell my teacher (18.30)。 It says は「(画面に)書いてある」で、主語が It なので says と -s がつきます - 天気の未来:today will be sunny (18.20)。will のあとは原形 be です - 手段の on foot:It's five minutes on foot from here. (18.22)。 It は距離を言う it です - いちばん上の on top:The sandwiches are on top (18.25)。on top of the basket とも言えます - 場所の on the beach:you promised to sing on the beach (18.26)。promise + to + 原形(Lesson 12)。 Lesson 17 の at the beach との違いは、規則 3 を見てください - 未来の will:I'll play my guitar, and Anna will make a video. (18.26)。I'll は I will の短縮形です。will のあとは原形 (play, make) です。make a video = 動画を撮る(作る) - 情報の on:put the video on the internet (18.27)。put ... on the internet = ネットに公開する。 但し書きの but が続きます - 副詞の on:Put on your coat first. (18.28)。put on = 着る。 It's windy. の It は、天気の it で、「それは」とは訳しません - 依存の on:It depends on the weather. (18.29)。 though は文末で「でも」の意味です - 条件の if:If it rains, we'll go home (18.29)。 we'll は we will の短縮形です - until:We can stay until four. (18.29)。 What a lovely day! (18.30)。What + a + 形容詞 + 名詞。 × Nobody didn't laugh。sang は sing の不規則な過去形です(Lesson 15 の did と同じように、-ed の形ではありません) - tell ... about:tell my teacher all about it (18.30)。 × tell about my teacher it - 日本語では「私は」「あなたは」が省略されますが、英語ではほとんどの文に主語が必要です。

Pronunciation Guide

- on と own:own /oʊn/ は、口を丸めて、「オウン」のように二つの音で言います。 - on と in:on /ɑn/ は口を大きく開け、in /ɪn/ は口を小さく開けて、短く言います。on the table と in the table は、意味がまったく違います。 - on と off:off /ɔf/ は、最後に息を出す /f/ で終わります。turn on /ˈtɝn ɑn/ と turn off /ˈtɝn ɔf/ は、最後の音で意味が変わります。

- 文の中の前置詞の on は、ふつう弱く短く言い、あとの名詞を強く言います:a book on the table /ə ˈbʊk ɑn ðə ˈteɪbəl/、See you on Monday. Put on your coat. /ˈpʊt ˈɑn jər ˈkoʊt/、Turn it ON. /ˈtɝn ɪt ˈɑn/。 What are you working on? /ˈwʌt ɑr ju ˈwɝkɪŋ ˈɑn/

- 子音のあとに on が来ると、前の語とつながります:turn on /ˈtɝ.nɑn/(「ターナン」のように聞こえます)、get on /ˈgɛ.tɑn/、put it on /ˈpʊ.ɾɪ.tɑn/。 - on time /ɑn ˈtaɪm/ は、on を弱く、time を強く言います。on foot /ɑn ˈfʊt/ も同じです。

Put it on the table.

Please turn on the light on the wall.
