मराठी भाषकांसाठी "there" चा वापर समजून घेण्यासाठी महत्त्वाचे मुद्दे: -
"There" चे दोन मुख्य वापर: -
स्थानदर्शक (तिथे/तेथे) - जागा दाखवण्यासाठी -
अस्तित्वदर्शक (आहे/आहेत) - एखाद्या गोष्टीचे अस्तित्व सांगण्यासाठी -
"There is/are" चा वापर: -
एकवचनी नामासोबत "is" (There is a book) -
अनेकवचनी नामासोबत "are" (There are birds) -
मराठीत "आहे/आहेत" असा वापर करतो -
काळानुसार बदल: -
वर्तमानकाळ: There is/are -
भूतकाळ: There was/were -
भविष्यकाळ: There will be -
सहाय्यकारी क्रियापदांसोबत वापर: -

मराठी आणि इंग्रजी भाषांमधील "there" चा वापर सांस्कृतिक दृष्टीने महत्त्वाचा आहे. मराठीत आपण साधारणपणे वाक्याची रचना वेगळ्या पद्धतीने करतो:
उदाहरण: -
मराठी: "टेबलावर पुस्तक आहे." -
इंग्रजी: "There is a book on the table."
मराठीत वाक्य जागेपासून सुरू होते (टेबलावर), तर इंग्रजीत "there is" पासून सुरू होते. हा फरक भाषेच्या सांस्कृतिक वापरातून आलेला आहे.

मराठीत आपण नेहमी वस्तूचे/व्यक्तीचे अस्तित्व थेट सांगतो -

शेक्सपिअरच्या 'हॅम्लेट' मधील हे वाक्य "there are" चा वापर करून एका गूढ सत्याकडे निर्देश करते. इंग्रजीत "there are" चा वापर अस्तित्वाची व्यापकता दर्शवण्यासाठी केला आहे.
