דאָס װאָרט of איז אַ פּרעפּאָזיציע (preposition) אין ענגליש, און איינס פֿון די אָפֿטסטע װערטער אין דער שפּראַך. עס שטייט צווישן צוויי נאָמענװערטער און פֿאַרבינדט זיי: the door of the house, a glass of tea, one of my friends, the mother of three children.
פֿאַר אַ ייִדיש־רעדער זעט אויס, אַז דאָס איז לײַכט, װײַל ייִדיש האָט דאָס װאָרט פֿון. אָבער ענגליש of און ייִדיש פֿון זענען נישט די זעלבע. מען קען נישט איבערזעצן װאָרט אויף װאָרט. זיי טרעפֿן זיך אין פֿאַרשיידענע פֿאַלן, און אין אַנדערע גייט יעדעס זײַן װעג:
- פֿון = of, from, by: ייִדיש פֿון מײנט דרײַ זאַכן. ענגליש האָט דרײַ באַזונדערע װערטער: the door of the house (די טיר פֿון הױז), a letter from my mother (אַ בריוו פֿון מײַן מאַמע), a story by Sholem Aleichem (אַ דערציילונג פֿון שלום־עליכם). ✗ a letter of my mother - אָן װאָרט: ייִדיש זאָגט אַ גלעזל טײ, אַ שטיקל ברױט, אַ פֿלעש װײַן, אָן קײן װאָרט צווישן זיי. ענגליש פֿאַרלאַנגט of: a glass of tea. ✗ a glass tea - דעם לערערס בוך: ייִדיש האָט פֿאַר מענטשן אַ סופֿיקס -ס (דעם לערערס בוך, ריװקעס קאַץ). ענגליש האָט דאָס אויך ('s): the teacher's book, Rivka's cat. פֿאַר זאַכן ניצט מען of: the door of the house. ✗ the house's door - אַ טייל פֿון: one of, some of, many of, most of, all of. נאָך of שטייט the, my, these, אָדער אַ פּראָנאָם: one of them. ✗ one of they - פֿעסטע פּאָרן: ענגליש of שטייט נאָך געװיסע װערטער, װוּ ייִדיש האָט אַן אַנדער פּרעפּאָזיציע: afraid of (מורא האָבן פֿאַר), full of (פֿול מיט). ✗ afraid for, ✗ full with - דער אַרויסרעד: of הערט זיך [əv].
- of איז די פּרעפּאָזיציע, װאָס פֿאַרבינדט צוויי נאָמענװערטער: the door of the house, the name of the cat - ייִדיש פֿון = ענגליש of, from אָדער by. ענגליש האָט דרײַ װערטער: a friend of the family, a letter from my mother, a story by Sholem Aleichem - אַ מאָס + of + אַ שטאָף: a glass of tea, a piece of bread, a bottle of wine. ייִדיש האָט קײן װאָרט נישט: אַ גלעזל טײ - פֿאַר מענטשן: 's (Moshe's cat). פֿאַר זאַכן: of (the color of the sky) - אַ טייל פֿון אַ גרופּע: one of my friends, many of the students, some of the food, all of them - נאָך of שטייט אַ פּראָנאָם אין דער פֿאָרעם me, you, him, her, it, us, them: one of us, ✗ one of we - a friend of mine, נישט ✗ a friend of me - made of wood, full of books, afraid of dogs: דער ענגלישער of איז פֿעסט - דאַטעס: the fifth of November. די יאָרן: a boy of ten - because of, instead of, a lot of, the end of, of course - אַרויסרעד: of [əv], נישט [əf] אָדער [ɔf]
Of is a preposition. It stands between two nouns and joins them: the door of the house, a glass of tea, one of my friends, the mother of three children. It is one of the most frequent words in English. Yiddish has the word fun, and it seems an easy lesson, but fun and of are not the same word. Yiddish fun also means from and by: English keeps three words, of, from and by. Yiddish puts a measure and its contents side by side (a glas tey), but English needs of: a glass of tea. Yiddish uses the possessive -s for people (dem lerers bukh), and English has 's for people and of for things. English of also follows certain words with a fixed pattern, afraid of and full of, where Yiddish uses other prepositions. The pronunciation is the last difficulty: of is written with an f, but it is pronounced [əv].
