Lesson 6 English for Yiddish Speakers: A Latinum Institute Language Course

to - צו

אײַנפֿירונג (Introduction)

דאָס װאָרט to איז אַ פּרעפּאָזיציע (preposition), און עס איז אויך דאָס צייכן פֿון דער אומבאַשטימטער פֿאָרעם פֿונעם צײַטװאָרט (infinitive). עס איז איינס פֿון די אָפֿטסטע װערטער אין ענגליש. עס װײַזט אַ ריכטונג אָדער אַ ציל: go to school, a letter to my mother, give it to him. און עס שטייט פֿאַרן צײַטװאָרט: I want to eat, it is difficult to learn, we have time to go.

ייִדיש ניצט פֿאַר דער ריכטונג פֿאַרשיידענע װערטער: go to school (גיין אין שול), go to the market (גיין אױף דעם מאַרק), go to Vilna (פֿאָרן קײן װילנע), go to my brother (גיין צו מײַן ברודער), from Monday to Friday (פֿון מאָנטיק ביז פֿרײַטיק). ✗ I go in school - דער באַקומער: ייִדיש האָט אַ באַזונדערן פֿאַל פֿאַרן באַקומער (דעם לערער, אים, איר). ענגליש האָט דעם פֿאַל נישט, און מאַרקירט דעם באַקומער מיט to: He gives the book to the teacher. ✗ He gives to the teacher the book - to + אינפֿיניטיװ: ענגליש to שטייט פֿאַרן צײַטװאָרט נאָך װיל, דאַרף, מוז: I want to eat, She needs to sleep. אין ייִדיש שטייט נאָך װיל און דאַרף קײן צו נישט (איך װיל עסן). נאָך can, must, should, will שטייט אין ענגליש קײן to נישט: I can walk. ✗ I can to walk - to און too: ייִדיש צו מײנט ״to״ און אויך ״too״ (צו שפּעט). ענגליש האָט צװײ װערטער, װאָס הערן זיך גלײַך: to און too. ✗ It is to late - פֿעסטע פּאָרן: listen to, talk to, next to, belong to, married to (חתונה געהאַט מיט).

- to װײַזט אַ ריכטונג און אַ ציל: go to school, go to the market, go to Vilna, a letter to my mother - ייִדיש אין, אױף, קײן, צו = ענגליש to: גיין אין שול, גיין אױף דעם מאַרק, פֿאָרן קײן װילנע, גיין צו מײַן ברודער - go to school, go to work, go to bed, אָבער go home, come here, go there: אָן to. ✗ I go to home - give it to him, show it to you, a letter to her: to + דער באַקומער (די ייִדישע דאַטיװ־פֿאָרעם) - to + אינפֿיניטיװ: want to go, need to sleep, have to leave, like to read, try to help. נאָך can, must, should, will: קײן to נישט - אַדיעקטיװ אָדער נאָמענװאָרט + to: difficult to learn, ready to go, time to drink - דער ציל: I go to the shop to buy bread. ייִדיש: כּדי צו קױפֿן - going to, have to, used to: װעלן, מוזן, פֿלעג - from … to (פֿון … ביז), ten to five (צען מינוט פֿאַר פֿינף) - to ≠ too ≠ two: אַלע דרײַ הערן זיך [tu] - אַרויסרעד: to [tu] אָדער [tə], נישט [tsu]

To is a preposition, and it is also the marker of the infinitive. It is one of the most frequent words in English. It shows direction and purpose (go to school, a letter to my mother) and it stands before a verb (I want to eat, it is difficult to learn). Yiddish has the word tsu, and it seems an easy lesson, but to and tsu are not the same word. For direction, Yiddish uses in, af, keyn and tsu where English uses only to. Yiddish has a dative case for the person who receives (dem lerer), and English marks that person with to (to the teacher). Yiddish does not use tsu after vil and darf (ikh vil esn), but English needs to after want and need and does not use it after can and must. Yiddish tsu also means too (tsu shpet), while English keeps two words, to and too. The pronunciation is the last difficulty: to begins with [t], not with [ts], and in a sentence it is usually weak, [tə].

דער זאַץ הייבט אָן מיט to be. דאָס איז דער זעלבער זאַץ, װאָס מיר האָבן אין כּלל 5 געזען: to + גרונט־פֿאָרעם. דאָ שטייט די גרונט־פֿאָרעם װי דער סובעקט פֿונעם זאַץ: To be is the question. אין ייִדיש שטייט דאָ אויך צו: צו זײַן אָדער נישט צו זײַן. ענגליש און ייִדיש גייען דאָ צוזאַמען.

דער צווייטער טייל פֿונעם זאַץ שטעלט צוויי מעגלעכקייטן, װאָס מען קען טאָן: to suffer (לײַדן) אָדער to take arms (נעמען געװער). Or פֿאַרבינדט זיי, און to װערט איבערגעחזרט: to suffer … or to take. דער זעלבער רעגל װי אין כּלל 5: װען צוויי אינפֿיניטיװן שטייען נעבן זיך, קען to אַרויסגעלאָזט װערן, אָבער דער דיכטער חזרט אים איבער, כּדי צו װײַזן דעם קאָנטראַסט.

דער װאָרט to שטייט אויך נאָך אַן אַדיעקטיװ: nobler … to suffer (כּלל 6). דאָס איז דער זעלבער מוסטער װי difficult to learn (6.9) און afraid to stay (6.28). דער אַדיעקטיװ nobler איז דער פֿאַרגלײַך פֿון noble (עדל); ייִדיש: עדלער.

against מײנט ״קעגן״, נישט ״צו״. ענגליש against און to זענען נישט די זעלבע: take arms against a sea of troubles (נעמען געװער קעגן אַ ים פֿון צרות). ✗ take arms to a sea.
