Lesson 7 English for Yiddish Speakers: A Latinum Institute Language Course

in - אין

אײַנפֿירונג (Introduction)

דאָס װאָרט in איז אַ פּרעפּאָזיציע (preposition) אין ענגליש, און איינס פֿון די אָפֿטסטע װערטער אין דער שפּראַך. עס װײַזט, אַז עפּעס איז אינעװײניק אין אַן אָרט, אין אַ צײַט אָדער אין אַ צושטאַנד: in the bag, in Vilna, in May, in love.

- in = אין, אױף, אַרײַן: ענגליש in איז אָפֿט ייִדיש אין, אָבער נישט תּמיד: write it in English (שרײַב עס אױף ענגליש), play in the street (שפּילן אױף דער גאַס), come in (קום אַרײַן). ✗ Write it on English - in ≠ to: ייִדיש אין מײנט אויך ״װוּהין״ (גיין אין שול). ענגליש in װײַזט נאָר, װוּ עפּעס איז, נישט װוּהין מען גייט: I live in Vilna, אָבער I go to Vilna (לעקציע 6). ✗ I go in Vilna - די צײַט: in May, in winter, in the morning, in the evening, in ten minutes. אָבער at night, at six, on Monday. ✗ in Monday - דער מענטש אין קליידער: the man in the black hat (דער מאַן אין דעם שװאַרצן הוט) - פֿעסטע פּאָרן: believe in (גלײבן אין), in love with (פֿאַרליבט אין: ענגליש נעמט with, נישט in), in front of (פֿאַר), in the end (צום סוף) - דער אַרויסרעד: in הערט זיך [ɪn] מיט אַ קורצן, לאָקערן װאָקאַל, נישט װי ייִדיש אין [in].

- in װײַזט, װוּ עפּעס איז: in the bag, in the kitchen, in Vilna, in New York - ייִדיש אין = ענגליש in: איך װױן אין װילנע = I live in Vilna - in (אָרט) ≠ to (ריכטונג): I live in Vilna, אָבער I go to Vilna. ✗ I go in school - in + אַ חודש, אַ יאָר, אַ צײַט פֿון יאָר, אַ טייל פֿון טאָג: in May, in 1990, in winter, in the morning. אָבער at night, on Monday, at six - in + אַ צײַט־שטח = ״װען עס װעט פֿאַרבײַ גיין״: I will come in ten minutes = אין צען מינוט - in English, in Yiddish = אױף ענגליש, אױף ייִדיש: ✗ on English - in + קליידער: the man in the black hat - come in, go in, sit in: in אָן אַ נאָמענװאָרט = אַרײַן - believe in, in love with, in front of, in the end - אַרויסרעד: in [ɪn], נישט [in]

In is a preposition. It shows that something is inside a place, a time or a state: in the bag, in Vilna, in May, in love. It is one of the most frequent words in English. Yiddish has the word in, and the two words are cousins, so this is the easiest preposition of the course so far. For most places, English in and Yiddish in are the same: ikh voyn in vilne, I live in Vilna. The differences are small but real. Yiddish in also means direction (gayn in shul), but English in shows only where something is, and English uses to for the direction (lesson 6). Yiddish says af for a language (af english) and for the street (af der gas), and English says in. English uses in for months, years, seasons and parts of the day, but at for the clock and for night, and on for days. English in love needs with after it, and Yiddish does not. The last difficulty is the sound: English in has a short, relaxed vowel, [ɪn], and Yiddish in has a tighter vowel, [in].

Part F-C (Literary Analysis)

דאָס זענען צוויי פֿאַרזן פֿון פּסלם 23 (תהילים כ״ג), װי זיי שטייען אין דער ענגלישער King James Version פֿון 1611. דער פּסלם הייסט אין דער ענגלישער טראַדיציע ״The Lord is my shepherd״ (גאָט איז מײַן פּאַסטעך). מיר האָבן געניצט דעם טעקסט, װי ער שטייט הײַנט אין די געדרוקטע אויסגאַבעס, מיט דער מאָדערנער שרײַבונג. מיר האָבן אים פֿאַרגליכן מיט צוויי אָנליין־אויסגאַבעס פֿון דער King James Version (Bible Gateway און Biblia), און די װערטער זענען די זעלבע. מיר האָבן אויסגעקליבן די פֿאַרזן, װײַל in שטייט אין זיי צוויי מאָל: in green pastures און in the paths of righteousness. דאָס זענען צוויי אַנדערע געברויכן פֿון in.

דער ערשטער in איז דער פּשוטער: in green pastures.

דער צווייטער in איז בילדלעך: in the paths of righteousness. גערעכטיקייט איז נישט קײן פֿיזישער אָרט, אָבער דער דיכטער שטעלט זי װי אַ װעג, װאָס מען גייט אין אים, און דעריבער שטייט in. מיט in שטייט אויך beside (לעבן): beside the still waters. in און beside זענען אַנדערע: in = אינעװײניק, beside = לעבן, בײַם ראַנד.

די פֿאָרמען maketh, leadeth, restoreth זענען אַלטע פֿאָרמען. -eth איז דער אַלטער סוף פֿון דער דריטער פּערזאָן; הײַנט זאָגט מען makes, leads, restores. נאָך maketh me שטייט to lie (צו לײגן זיך), װאָס הײַנט זאָגט מען אָן to: He makes me lie down (זען לעקציע 6, כּלל 5). דער אַלטער סטיל לאָזט זיך הערן אין דער ביבל.

name's sake האָט דעם 's (לעקציע 5): for his name's sake = צוליב זײַן נאָמען. of righteousness האָט of (לעקציע 5): the paths of righteousness. אַזוי קומען אין דעם פּסוק צוריק די װערטער פֿון די פֿריִערדיקע לעקציעס: the, of, to, in.
