Lesson 83 Georgian: A Latinum Institute Modern Language Course

სხვა (skhva) - Other

Introduction

For autodidact students of Georgian, "other" is სხვა (skhva). სხვა წიგნი (skhva ts'igni) is "another book" or "a different book"; სხვა არავინ (skhva aravin) is "nobody else"; სხვა რამე (skhva rame) is "something else." It is a word of one syllable, with three consonants standing together before the vowel: s-kh-v-a.

English spreads this idea over several words: "other," "another," "else," "different." Georgian covers all four with the one word სხვა. It also has no articles, so there is no difference between "another" and "the other" in the way the word itself is written. When there are only two things and "the other" means "the second one," Georgian usually says მეორე (meore), the word for "second": ერთი ... მეორე (erti ... meore) is "one ... the other."

სხვა works in two ways. - Before a noun it is a describing word, and like every Georgian describing word that ends in a vowel it does not change: სხვა წიგნი, სხვა წიგნს (to another book), სხვა წიგნები (other books). It stays singular even before a plural noun. - On its own it stands for a person or a thing, and then it takes case endings like a noun: სხვამ (skhvam), სხვას (skhvas), სხვის (skhvis). In the plural it is სხვები (skhvebi), "others, other people."

The word is old. Wiktionary traces it to Old Georgian სხუაჲ (skhuay) and, behind that, to a Proto-Kartvelian root shared with Mingrelian, Laz and Svan. It sits at the front of a whole family of words: - სხვისი (skhvisi): someone else's, other people's - სხვაგან (skhvagan): elsewhere, somewhere else - სხვადასხვა (skhvadaskhva): various, of different kinds - სხვანაირი (skhvanairi): of another kind, different - განსხვავებული (ganskhvavebuli): different, distinct (it has the same root, and it was used in earlier lessons of this course)

Key Takeaways: - სხვა (skhva): other, another, else, different - Before a noun it never changes: სხვა წიგნი, სხვა წიგნები, სხვა ქალაქში - Alone it declines: სხვა (nominative), სხვამ (ergative), სხვას (dative), სხვის (genitive); plural სხვები - With question words and indefinites: სხვა ვინ (who else), სხვა რა (what else), სხვა რამე (something else), სხვა არავინ (nobody else), სხვა არაფერი (nothing else) - The family: სხვისი (someone else's), სხვაგან (elsewhere), სხვადასხვა (various), სხვანაირი (of another kind) - "The other" of two is მეორე (meore), not სხვა - "Is another, is different" is სხვაა (skhvaa): ეს სხვაა, "this is different"

Script-Specific Guidance

სხვა is written in Mkhedruli with four letters: ს (s), ხ (kh), ვ (v) and ა (a). Three consonants open the word, and Georgian does not break them up. Say them together, with no vowel between them: skhva, not "sakhva" or "sekhva." The two middle letters are said as one movement of the tongue: ხ is the rough sound of Scottish "loch" and ვ follows it at once. The IPA given for the word in Wiktionary, /sχʷa/, shows the lips rounded during the ხ, so the cluster comes close to "khw."

A note on the romanization. Some sources, among them Wiktionary, write ხ as "x" and so give "sxva." This course writes ხ as "kh" throughout, so the word is skhva and its family is skhvisi, skhvagan, skhvebi.

In Unicode, ს is U+10E1, ხ is U+10EE, ვ is U+10D5 and ა is U+10D0, all in the Georgian block. Do not copy look-alike letters from other scripts.

Learn to see სხვ- at the front of a word and to read the ending separately: -ისი is the possessive, -აგან is "-where," -ები is the plural, -ადასხვა is the doubled form. Even in განსხვავებული the root is there, inside the word, after the prefix გან-.

A reminder on the romanization: ხ is kh, ღ is gh, შ is sh, ჩ is ch, ც is ts, ძ is dz, ჟ is zh, ჯ is j, and the apostrophe marks the ejectives (კ k', პ p', ტ t', წ ts', ჭ ch', ყ q').

Section D: Grammar Explanation

These are the grammar rules for სხვა (skhva), "other."

Before a noun, სხვა never changes. Georgian describing words that end in a vowel other than -ი take no endings when they stand in front of a noun, and სხვა ends in -ა. The noun carries the case, and სხვა stays as it is: - სხვა წიგნი (skhva ts'igni) — another book (83.1) - სხვა ქალაქში (skhva kalakshi) — in another city (83.10) - სხვა ქალაქიდან (skhva kalakidan) — from another city (83.6) - სხვა მნიშვნელობა (skhva mnishvneloba) — another meaning (83.12)

It also stays in the singular before a plural noun: სხვა ზომები (skhva zomebi), "other sizes"; სხვა ქუდებს (skhva kudebs), "other hats." The wrong form is \*სხვები ქუდები.

On its own, სხვა declines. When it means "another person" or "another thing," it takes the endings of a noun that ends in -ა: - სხვა (skhva) — nominative: სხვა ამას ვერ გააკეთებს (83.14), "someone else will not be able to do this" - სხვამ (skhvam) — ergative: სხვამ იყიდა (skhvam iq'ida), "someone else bought it" - სხვას (skhvas) — dative: სხვას ეხმარება (skhvas ekhmareba), "he helps someone else" - სხვის (skhvis) — genitive: სხვის წიგნი (skhvis ts'igni), "another person's book"

The plural, "others," is regular: - სხვები (skhvebi) — nominative: სხვები ბედნიერები არიან (83.13) - სხვებმა (skhvebma) — ergative - სხვებს (skhvebs) — dative: სხვებს ეხმარება (83.8) - სხვების (skhvebis) — genitive

The postpositions go on the same stems: სხვასთან (skhvastan), "with, at someone else's"; სხვაზე (skhvaze), "about, on someone else"; სხვებზე (skhvebze), "than others" (see the dialogue below); სხვისთვის (skhvistvis), "for someone else."

სხვისი, "someone else's." The genitive სხვის with the ending -ი gives a possessive word that is used like ჩემი (chemi), "my, mine": ეს წიგნი ჩემი არ არის, სხვისია (83.9). It declines in the same way as ჩემი: nominative სხვისი, ergative სხვისმა, dative სხვის, vocative სხვისო. With "is" it becomes სხვისია (skhvisia), "it is someone else's."

Being different: სხვაა. The word can be the whole predicate. ეს სხვაა (83.4) is "this is something else," "this is another matter," and ყველა ადამიანი სხვაა (83.15) is "every person is different." The past is სხვა იყო (skhva iq'o), "it was different." When the English says "different from X," Georgian often uses the longer განსხვავებული (ganskhvavebuli) instead.

The question words and the indefinites. სხვა comes first and the question word follows it: - სხვა ვინ? (skhva vin?) — who else? (83.3) - სხვა რა? (skhva ra?) — what else? In 83.20 below: სხვა რა ფერი, "what other colour" - სხვა რამე (skhva rame) — something else, anything else (83.5) - სხვა არავინ (skhva aravin) — nobody else - სხვა არაფერი (skhva araperi) — nothing else (83.28 below)

The negative words არავინ and არაფერი carry the negation by themselves, as in lesson 82 (აქ არავინ იყო): you do not need an extra არ.

The family. - სხვაგან (skhvagan) — elsewhere, somewhere else (83.11). It does not change. To say "to elsewhere" or "from elsewhere," the same word is used with the right verb. - სხვადასხვა (skhvadaskhva) — various, different, of several kinds; it is სხვა doubled with და, "and": სხვადასხვა ფერის ქუდები, "hats of various colours." Like სხვა, it stays unchanged before a noun. - სხვანაირი (skhvanairi) — of another kind; the adverb is სხვანაირად (skhvanairad), "differently." - მეორე (meore) — the other (of two), the second; it is not built on სხვა.

Two things that go with სხვა in this lesson. - The "have" verb. 83.12 has ამ სიტყვას აქვს (am sit'q'vas akvs), "this word has," with the owner in the dative and the thing owned in the nominative, and the shop dialogue has გაქვთ (gakvt), "you have," and გვაქვს (gvakvs), "we have." The pattern is the same as in 83.15: ყველას თავისი გზა აქვს, "everyone has their own way." - A comparison with -ზე (-ze): the standard of comparison takes -ზე and the adjective takes უფრო (upro), "more": სხვებზე უფრო ლამაზია, "is more beautiful than the others" (83.25).

Common Mistakes: - Putting an ending on სხვა before a noun. Say სხვა წიგნს (to another book), not \*სხვას წიგნს. - Making სხვა plural before a plural noun. Say სხვა წიგნები, not \*სხვები წიგნები. სხვები stands alone and means "other people." - Putting სხვა after its noun, as in \*წიგნი სხვა. It stands in front: სხვა წიგნი. - Using სხვა for "the other one of two." Say მეორე: ერთი ჩემია, მეორე შენია, "one is mine, the other is yours." - Breaking up the three consonants in speech, as in \*sakhva. They are said together. - Writing the ending of "someone else's" as \*სხვაისი. The possessive is built on the genitive სხვის: სხვისი. - Reading სხვა as "strange." It means "other, different"; the word for "strange" is უცნაური (utsnauri).

Section E: Cultural Context

სხვა is a word of the everyday language, neutral in register, and it stands in the same form in speech, in the newspaper and in a poem. In the course's frequency list it stands at 83.

The place where a learner meets it first is the shop. The seller asks სხვა რამე გნებავთ? (skhva rame gnebavt?), "anything else?", or, more carefully, სხვა რამე ხომ არ გნებავთ?, and the customer says არა, სხვა არაფერი (ara, skhva araperi), "no, nothing else," usually with მადლობა (madloba), "thank you." The customer who is not satisfied asks სხვა ფერი გაქვთ? (skhva peri gakvt?), "do you have another colour?" and სხვა ზომა გაქვთ? (skhva zoma gakvt?), "do you have another size?" The dialogue in this lesson is made of such questions.

Georgian proverbs often speak of "others." The collections list several that begin with სხვა or სხვის, among them სხვისი ჭირი, ღობეს ჩხირი (Section F), which the Georgian press also quotes in its headlines when it writes of indifference to someone else's trouble.

სხვადასხვა (skhvadaskhva), "various," is the usual word when a thing exists in many forms, and it is used in the same way in speech and in writing.

Section F: Literary Citation

Georgian folk proverb (ანდაზა)

სხვისი ჭირი, ღობეს ჩხირი.

The wording is the one given on the Georgian proverbs page of geofl.ge (ქართული ანდაზები), where it is listed twice, with the English note "Another's cares will not rob you of sleep." The same wording heads articles of the Georgian press, among them Radio Tavisupleba (Radio Liberty's Georgian service) and Alia, as these were returned by a search of Georgian-language sources; a poem by Tamar Gelashvili on poetry.ge has a title that works the saying in, in the form "...სხვისი ჭირი ღობის ჩხირის სადარი." No printed collection could be opened for this lesson, so the proverb is given as a traditional one, without an editor, and the reading below is the Latinum Institute's own.

The proverb is chosen because it opens with the headword's possessive, სხვისი, and because it is made of nothing but two nouns and their small words: the grammar of "someone else's" is in plain view.

F-A: Interlinear

F.1b skhvisi (SKHVI-si) other's-NOM ch'iri (CH'I-ri) trouble-NOM

F.2a ღობეს fence's ჩხირი stick

F.2b ghobes (GHO-bes) fence-GEN chkhiri (CHKHI-ri) stick-NOM

F-B: Original and Translation

სხვისი ჭირი, ღობეს ჩხირი.

"Someone else's trouble is a stick in the fence." (Translation: Latinum Institute.)

F-C: Original

სხვისი ჭირი, ღობეს ჩხირი.

F-D: Grammar and Literary Commentary

The proverb has no verb. It sets two phrases side by side, and the "is" is left for the listener to supply: this is common in Georgian sayings, and it makes them short enough to remember. The two halves also rhyme: ჭირი (ch'iri) and ჩხირი (chkhiri) share the ending -ირი.

ჭირი means trouble, hardship, affliction. ჩხირი is a stick or a twig, and so the picture is of something small and common that one passes without looking at it. The geofl.ge page explains the saying as "one doesn't truly feel another's suffering." The page says no more than that, and the reading is clear enough: what happens to another person weighs about as much, to the one who looks on, as a twig in a fence.

On the grammar. სხვისი (skhvisi) is the possessive built on the genitive სხვის (skhvis) of სხვა, with -ი, exactly as ჩემი is "my" and შენი is "your." It is the "someone else's" of 83.9. ღობეს (ghobes) is the form in which the sources give the proverb, and it stands here for "of the fence"; the usual genitive of ღობე (ghobe), "fence," is ღობის (ghobis), which is the form in the poem's title. In the proverb the ending -ს is part of the set phrase and should be learned with it. ჩხირი (chkhiri) is the nominative.

The form to remember from the proverb is the chain სხვა, სხვის, სხვისი: "other," "of another," "belonging to another."

Part D: Grammar Notes

The word in the dialogue. It appears in every line, in several shapes: before a singular noun (სხვა ფერი, 83.20, 83.26), before a plural noun (სხვა ზომებიც, 83.17; სხვა ფერებიც, 83.21; სხვა ქუდებსაც, 83.29), before a genitive (სხვა ზომის ქუდი, 83.16; სხვა ფერის ქუდს, 83.24), alone and in the ergative (სხვამ, 83.23), alone in the plural (სხვებზე, 83.25) and as part of a fixed phrase (სხვა რამე, სხვა არაფერი, სხვა დროს).

სხვა before a genitive (83.16, 83.24). A noun in the genitive that describes another noun stands in front of it: ზომის ქუდი, "a hat of a size," ფერის ქუდი, "a hat of a colour." სხვა stands in front of the genitive, so the order is "other size's hat." The genitive of ზომა is ზომის and the genitive of ფერი is ფერის.

სხვამ იყიდა (83.23). The verb "buy" is in the aorist, the simple past, and the subject of a transitive verb in the aorist takes the ergative: სხვამ. The thing bought, ქუდი, stays in the nominative. The same verb in the future is ვიყიდი, "I will buy" (83.24), and there the buyer is in the nominative and the thing bought goes into the dative, ქუდს.

The "-ც" of "also" (83.17, 83.21, 83.29). The small ending -ც (-ts) means "too, also," and is added to the end of the word it points at, after the case ending: ზომებიც, ფერებიც, ქუდებსაც. In ქუდებსაც the dative ending -ს comes first and -ც after it.

მომწონს (83.22). "I like" is built with the one who likes in the verb, as the prefix მ- (m-), "to me," and the thing liked as the subject: ლურჯი მომწონს, literally "the blue pleases me." The prefix is the same მ- as in მინდა (minda), "I want."

გაქვთ and გვაქვს (83.16, 83.17, 83.20, 83.21). These are the forms of "have" for "you" (plural or polite) and "we." The verb itself is the one of lesson 82: აქვს, "he has," მაქვს, "I have," გაქვს, "you have," გვაქვს, "we have." გაქვთ is the polite გაქვს, with -თ added.

ხომ არ (83.27). The pair ხომ არ before a verb makes a polite offer or a careful question: ხომ არ გნებავთ, "would you perhaps like...?" It has no single word in English.

არა, სხვა არაფერი მინდა (83.28). არა (ara) is the plain "no." სხვა არაფერი is "nothing else," with the negative word არაფერი in front of a verb that has no არ. ხვალ and ისევ (83.29). ხვალ (khval) is "tomorrow" and ისევ (isev) is "again." მობრძანდით is the polite "please come," the word which lesson 82 gave as the shopkeeper's invitation. The future მივიღებთ is "we will receive," from the verb of "taking in, receiving."

სხვებზე (83.25). -ზე (-ze) on the thing compared with, and უფრო (upro) before the adjective: წითელი ქუდი სხვებზე უფრო ლამაზია, "the red hat is more beautiful than the others."

Pronunciation Guide

Georgian stress is light, usually on the first syllable of a short word; no syllable is pushed hard as in English. The capitals in the respellings mark that first syllable as a guide, but say each syllable clearly and evenly. Vowels are short and pure: a as in "father," e as in "bed," i as in "machine," o as in "port," u as in "rule."

სხვა (skhva) — IPA: /sχʷa/ — One syllable. Three consonants come first and no vowel is put between them. The ხ is the throaty "loch" sound, said with the lips rounded for the ვ that follows. სხვები (skhvebi) — IPA: /sχʷebi/ — The same opening, then two even syllables, ve-bi. სხვისი (skhvisi) — IPA: /sχʷisi/ — Two syllables, skhvi-si. სხვაგან (skhvagan) — IPA: /sχʷagan/ — Two syllables after the cluster, skhva-gan. სხვადასხვა (skhvadaskhva) — IPA: /sχʷadasχʷa/ — Four syllables, skhva-da-skhva, with the cluster at both ends. გზა (gza) — IPA: /gza/ — Two consonants before the vowel, g and z, with no vowel between them. გვგონია (gvgonia) — IPA: /gvgonia/ — The gvg cluster is said in one breath, then go-ni-a. გვაქვს (gvakvs) — IPA: /gvakʰvs/ — The g and v come together, and the final kvs is one closed syllable. გაქვთ (gakvt) — IPA: /gakʰvtʰ/ — The same ქ as in აქ in the last lesson, the aspirated k, then v and an aspirated t. ქუდი (kudi) — IPA: /kʰudi/ — ქ is the aspirated k; compare კაცი (k'atsi), IPA /kʼatsʰi/, with the ejective კ. ქალაქი (kalaki) — IPA: /kʰalakʰi/ — Both k's are aspirated. მნიშვნელობა (mnishvneloba) — IPA: /mniʃvɛloba/ — Start with m and n together, with no vowel. შ is "sh." მაღაზია (maghazia) — IPA: /maʁazia/ — ღ is the voiced throat sound, close to the French r in "Paris." ბედნიერი (bednieri) — IPA: /bɛdnieri/ — The dn cluster is said smoothly, bed-nie-ri. ყოველთვის (q'oveltvis) — IPA: /qʼovɛltʰvis/ — ყ is made far back in the throat and popped, with no breath after it. ჭირი (ch'iri) — IPA: /tʃʼiri/ — ჭ is an ejective ch: a sharp, popped sound. ჩხირი (chkhiri) — IPA: /tʃʰχiri/ — ch and kh run together at the start, with no vowel between them. ღობე (ghobe) — IPA: /ʁobɛ/ — The same throat sound ღ as in მაღაზია. ლურჯი (lurji) — IPA: /lurdʒi/ — ჯ is "j" as in English "judge." წითელი (ts'iteli) — IPA: /tsʼitʰɛli/ — წ is an ejective ts, popped without breath; თ is aspirated. მომწონს (momts'ons) — IPA: /momtsʼons/ — The mts cluster is said smoothly after the first two syllables. მობრძანდით (mobrdzandit) — IPA: /mobrdzanditʰ/ — The brdz cluster has no vowel in it: mo-brdzan-dit.
