Lesson 84 Georgian: A Latinum Institute Modern Language Course

-ში (-shi) - Into

Introduction

For autodidact students of Georgian, "into" is -ში (-shi). It is not a word that stands alone. It is a small ending that is written on the end of a noun: ოთახში (otakhshi) is "into the room," ქალაქში (kalakshi) is "into the city," წყალში (ts'q'alshi) is "into the water." English puts "into" in front of the noun and Georgian puts -ში behind it, so Georgian is said to have postpositions where English has prepositions.

English has two words, "in" and "into." Georgian has one ending, -ში, and it means both. What tells the listener whether the thing is still or moving is the verb: - ბავშვი ოთახშია (bavshvi otakhshia): "the child is in the room" - ბავშვი ოთახში შევიდა (bavshvi otakhshi shevida): "the child went into the room"

The verb often carries a small front piece, a preverb, that points the way of the movement. This lesson uses four of them: - შე- (she-): in, away from the speaker: შევიდა (shevida), "went in" - შემო- (shemo-): in, towards the speaker: შემოვიდა (shemovida), "came in" - ჩა- (cha-): down into, inside a container: ჩადო (chado), "put in"; ჩავარდა (chavarda), "fell in" - გადა- (gada-): over, across, into another place: გადავიდა (gadavida), "moved over"

Wiktionary gives -ში the meaning "in, into." Both Wiktionary and the Wikibooks Georgian grammar say that it is placed on the noun and takes the place of the dative ending -ს. The same ending is found in fixed expressions of the abstract kind, such as სინამდვილეში (sinamdvileshi), "in reality," and შემთხვევაში (shemtkhvevashi), "in the case (of)."

Key Takeaways: - -ში (-shi): in, into; it is written together with the noun - The noun loses a final -ი: სახლი becomes სახლში, ოთახი becomes ოთახში, ბაღი becomes ბაღში - A noun that ends in -ა, -ე or -ო keeps its vowel: ქუჩაში, ტყეში, ეზოში - Plural: -ებში: სახლებში, ქუჩებში - A describing word in front of the noun is in its short form: ახალ ბინაში, ამ ოთახში, ჩემს ჩანთაში, პატარა ბოთლში - The verb tells the direction: ოთახშია (is in the room), ოთახში შევიდა (went into the room) - Preverbs: შე- (in), შემო- (in, towards me), ჩა- (down into), გა- (out) - Out of is -დან: ბაღიდან სახლში, "from the garden into the house" - "Turn into, become" is not -ში but the ending -ად: წყლად იქცა, "turned into water"

Script-Specific Guidance

-ში is written with two letters of Mkhedruli: შ (sh) and ი (i). In Unicode, შ is U+10E8 and ი is U+10D8, both in the Georgian block. The ending is always joined to the noun with no space and no hyphen: ოთახში, never \*ოთახ ში.

The letter შ is "sh" as in English "shoe." Be careful not to take it for ს (s), ც (ts) or ჩ (ch), which are different letters with different sounds. When the noun itself ends in a consonant, the ending follows at once and the two sounds meet: ბოთლში (botlshi), ჭიქებში (ch'ikebshi), სახლში (sakhlshi). Say them without a vowel in between.

A note on the romanization. This course writes the ending with a hyphen when it is spoken of alone, -shi, and without one when it is part of a word: otakhshi.

A reminder on the romanization: ხ is kh, ღ is gh, შ is sh, ჩ is ch, ც is ts, ძ is dz, ჟ is zh, ჯ is j, and the apostrophe marks the ejectives (კ k', პ p', ტ t', წ ts', ჭ ch', ყ q').

Section D: Grammar Explanation

These are the grammar rules for -ში (-shi), "in, into."

How the ending is put on the noun. -ში goes on the stem of the noun and takes the place of the dative ending -ს. In practice: - A noun in -ი loses the -ი: ოთახი becomes ოთახში (84.1), ქალაქი becomes ქალაქში (84.2), ბაღი becomes ბაღში, სახლი becomes სახლში (84.6), ყუთი becomes ყუთში (84.14), კარი becomes კარში (84.13), წყალი becomes წყალში (84.4). - A noun in -ა, -ე or -ო keeps its vowel: ჩანთა becomes ჩანთაში (84.7), ბინა becomes ბინაში (84.11), ქუჩა becomes ქუჩაში, ტყე becomes ტყეში (84.12), ეზო becomes ეზოში (84.10). - The plural puts -ებ- before the ending: სახლებში (sakhlebshi), ჭიქებში (ch'ikebshi), ქუჩებში (kuchebshi). - Place names follow the same rule: თბილისი becomes თბილისში (tbilisshi), საქართველო becomes საქართველოში (sakartveloshi).

The words in front of the noun. A word that describes the noun, or points to it, stands before it in its short form, and the ending -ში is only at the end of the noun: - ამ ოთახში (am otakhshi): into this room; ამ is the short form of ეს (84.13) - ახალ ბინაში (akhal binashi): into a new flat; ახალი loses its -ი (84.11) - პატარა ბოთლში (p'at'ara botlshi): into a small bottle; პატარა ends in -ა and does not change (84.8) - ჩემს ჩანთაში (chems chantashi): into my bag; ჩემი becomes ჩემს (84.7) - ერთ საათში (ert saatshi): in one hour; ერთი loses its -ი (84.9)

In or into: the verb decides. The same ending serves for both: - with "be": ბავშვი ოთახშია (bavshvi otakhshia), "the child is in the room"; ყველა ყუთი ბინაშია (q'vela q'uti binashia), "every box is in the flat" (see the dialogue below) - with a verb of movement: ბავშვი ოთახში შევიდა, "the child went into the room" (84.1)

Going into: შესვლა. The verb for "to enter" has the preverb შე-. Three of its tenses: - present: შევდივარ (shevdivar), I am going in; შედიხარ (shedikhar), you are going in; შედის (shedis), he goes in (84.3); შედიან (shedian), they go in - future: შევალ (sheval), I will go in; შეხვალ (shekhval), you will go in (84.12); შევა (sheva), he will go in - aorist: შევედი (shevedi), I went in; შეხვედი (shekhvedi), you went in; შევიდა (shevida), he went in (84.1); შევიდნენ (shevidnen), they went in - command: შედი (shedi), შედით (shedit): go in (84.13)

Coming in: შემოსვლა. With შემო- the movement is towards the speaker: შემოვიდა (shemovida), "he came in" (84.6); შემოვედი (shemovedi), "I came in" (84.15); შემოვალ (shemoval), "I will come in" (dialogue); the command is შემოდი (shemodi) to one person and შემოდით (shemodit) to several people or to someone you address politely (84.5). Compare შეხვალ (you will go in, I am not there) with შემოხვალ (you will come in, I am there).

Putting and carrying things in. When a person does something to a thing, the verb is transitive and the person stands in the ergative in the aorist, as in lesson 83: - ჩადო (chado), put in: დედამ ... წიგნი ჩადო (84.7); the thing put in stays in the nominative. - ჩაასხა (chaaskha), poured in (84.8) - ჩაალაგა (chaalaga), packed in (84.14) - შეიტანა (sheit'ana), carried in: "I carried in" is შევიტანე (shevit'ane) and "carry in!" is შეიტანე (sheit'ane). This is the verb of the dialogue.

Falling, moving, flying in. ჩავარდა (chavarda), "fell in" (84.4); გადავიდა (gadavida), "moved over, moved to another place" (84.11); შემოფრინდა (shemoprinda), "flew in," in the dialogue.

Out of: -დან. The ending -დან (-dan) means "from" or "out of": ბაღიდან (baghidan), "from the garden" (84.6). The pair ბაღიდან სახლში, "from the garden into the house," shows the two endings side by side. ოთახიდან (otakhidan) is "from the room, out of the room." The preverb გა- is "out": გავიდა (gavida), "went out." Note the difference in the noun: -ში drops the final -ი (ოთახში) and -დან keeps it (ოთახიდან).

The same ending, with time. -ში is also "in" for time: ერთ საათში (84.9), "in an hour"; ზამთარში (zamtarshi), "in winter." This is not movement into a place, but the same ending is used.

Becoming, turning into: -ად. English "turn into" does not take -ში in Georgian. The thing that something becomes goes into the ending -ად (-ad): წყალი becomes წყლად (84.10), the verb is იქცა (iktsa), "turned into, became." Georgian texts have the same pattern in other sentences, such as კაცად იქცა (k'atsad iktsa), "became a man."

When -ში is not the right ending. - To a person, use -თან: შენთან მოვალ, "I will come to you" (84.9). - "As far as, up to" is -მდე: ქალაქამდე, "as far as the city." - A surface or an open place often takes -ზე (on): ბაზარზე, ზღვაზე, მთაზე.

Common Mistakes: - Keeping the final -ი: \*სახლიში. Say სახლში. - Putting the dative ending as well: \*სახლსში. The ending -ში replaces -ს. - Writing the ending as a separate word: \*სახლ ში. It is part of the noun. - Leaving the describing word in the long form: \*ახალი ბინაში. Say ახალ ბინაში. - Using the preverb of the wrong direction: შევიდა is "went in (away from here)," შემოვიდა is "came in (towards here)," and გავიდა is "went out." - Using -ში for "become": \*წყალში იქცა for "turned into water." Say წყლად იქცა. - Putting the ending on the describing word: \*ახალში ბინა. The ending goes on the noun, at the end.

Section E: Cultural Context

-ში is a plain, neutral ending, with no special register. It is item 84 in the course's vocabulary list, where "into" is filed under direction and entering, and the same form serves for a place name (თბილისში, "in Tbilisi") and for a room.

The first place where the learner will meet the idea of the lesson is the door. A host says შემოდით! (shemodit), "come in," to a visitor, and the visitor goes into the room: ოთახში შედის. Directions use the same family of words: ამ კარში შედით, "go in through this door."

The ending is also at home in Georgian proverbs. The list of Georgian proverbs on Wikiquote includes sayings in which someone ends up in water, and the one chosen for this lesson, in Section F, is one of them.

A place name shows both senses of the ending at once. Wikibooks gives საქართველოში (sakartveloshi) as "in Georgia" and "to Georgia": the noun is the same, and the verb says whether one lives there or travels there.

Section F: Literary Citation

Georgian folk proverb (ანდაზა)

გლახა გლახას წაეკიდა, ორივ წყალში ჩავარდაო.

The wording is that of the list of Georgian proverbs on the Georgian-language Wikiquote (ქართული ანდაზები), where it stands in the section of proverbs that begin with გ, printed with ორივ, without a comma and without a full stop; the comma and the full stop here are ours. A search for the line returned no other wording. No printed collection could be opened for this lesson, so the proverb is given as a traditional one, without an editor. The translation and the reading below are the Latinum Institute's own, and the meanings of the two less common words, გლახა and წაეკიდა, are given from their use in the proverb and its neighbours, not from a dictionary that could be opened.

The proverb is chosen because its last phrase, წყალში ჩავარდა, is the pattern of the lesson in its simplest form: a noun with -ში, and the verb with the preverb ჩა-, "fell in."

გლახა გლახას წაეკიდა, ორივ წყალში ჩავარდაო.

"A poor man picked a quarrel with a poor man, and both fell into the water, they say." (Translation: Latinum Institute.)

F-C: Original

გლახა გლახას წაეკიდა, ორივ წყალში ჩავარდაო.

F-D: Grammar and Literary Commentary

The proverb is one sentence in two halves, as many Georgian sayings are. The first half tells of a quarrel, the second of its end.

წაეკიდა (ts'aek'ida) is the aorist of "to quarrel with," and the person quarrelled with stands in the dative: გლახას. The first გლახა is the nominative, the one who starts the quarrel. The two nouns look alike but stand in different cases, and so a Georgian listener knows without any other help who did what to whom.

ორივ (oriv) is "both." It appears to be a short form of ორივე (orive); the proverb is recorded in the short form. The form in the second half, წყალში ჩავარდა, is the grammar of the lesson: წყალი with the ending -ში, as წყალში, and ჩავარდა (chavarda), the aorist of ჩავარდნა, "to fall in," as in 84.4: ბურთი წყალში ჩავარდა. Here the subject is "both," and the verb is the same.

The last letter of ჩავარდაო is not part of the verb. The ending -ო (-o) is the quotative particle, "they say, it is said." It is common at the end of proverbs and folk tales, and it sets the saying at a distance, as something people say and not something the speaker claims.

The reading is the Institute's: when two helpless people fight each other, they do not hurt only each other, since both end up in the water. The sources opened for this lesson give the proverb without an explanation.

Part C: Georgian Text Only

Part D: Grammar Notes

The ending in the dialogue. -ში is in every line: with a verb of carrying (შევიტანე, 84.16; შევიტანო, 84.18, 84.20; შეიტანე, 84.21), with a verb of coming in (შემოდი, 84.17, 84.29; შემოვიდეს, 84.23; შემოფრინდა, 84.24; შემოვიდნენ, 84.26; შემოვარდეს, 84.27), with a verb of pouring or packing (ჩავალაგებ, 84.19; ჩავასხამ, 84.22), with გავა, "will go out" (84.25), and, twice, with no verb of movement at all, where it is "in": ბინაშია (84.28) and ახალ ბინაში (84.30).

შე- and შემო- in one scene. When the movement goes away from the speaker the preverb is შე- (შევიტანე, "I carried in"; შეიტანე, "carry in," 84.21), and when it comes towards the speaker it is შემო- (შემოდი, "come in," 84.17 and 84.29; შემოფრინდა, "flew in," 84.24). ბაღში გავა (84.25) is "will go out into the garden," with გა-.

Verbs with ჩა-. ჩავალაგებ (84.19) is the future of ჩაალაგა (84.14); ჩავასხამ (84.22) is the future of ჩაასხა (84.8). In the future, the person doing the action is in the nominative, and the thing is in the dative: ტანსაცმელს (84.19), ჩაის (84.22). The same shift was seen in lesson 83 (ქუდს ვიყიდი).

უნდა with a subjunctive (84.18). უნდა (unda), "must," is followed by the subjunctive of the verb: უნდა შევიტანო, "I must carry in." The same form without უნდა is a question of what one should do: წიგნები რომელ ოთახში შევიტანო? (84.20), "which room shall I carry the books into?"

The wish after რომ (84.23). რომ (rom), "so that," takes the subjunctive: რომ ... შემოვიდეს, "so that ... may come in." The subject, ჰაერი, is in the nominative.

The wish in the third person (84.27). ითამაშონ (itamashon) is a wish or a permission in the third person plural, "let them play." The wish not to have something happen is არ + the subjunctive: ბურთი ... არ შემოვარდეს, "let the ball not burst in." ოღონდ (oghond) means "only, as long as."

"Is" written on the word before it (84.21, 84.28, 84.29, 84.30). After a word that ends in a vowel, "is" shrinks to -ა and is written onto it: თაროებია (shelves are), ბინაშია (is in the flat), მზადაა (is ready), გემრიელია (is tasty), as in lesson 83 (სხვაა).

ბინაშია against ბინაში შევიტანე. In 84.28 the box is in the flat and nobody is moving it, so the ending has the sense of "in." In 84.16 the same ending, with a verb of carrying, is "into."

ახალ ბინაში პირველი ჩაი (84.30). The ending -ში goes to ბინა, and the describing word ახალ is in its short form. პირველი ჩაი is the subject, "the first tea." ყველაზე გემრიელია is "the tastiest": ყველაზე, "than all," before a describing word makes the superlative.

Pronunciation Guide

Georgian stress is light; no syllable is pushed hard as in English. The capitals in the respellings mark a guide syllable only, so say each syllable clearly and evenly. Vowels are short and pure: a as in "father," e as in "bed," i as in "machine," o as in "port," u as in "rule."

ში (shi) — IPA: /ʃi/ — The ending is sh as in "shoe," then i. ოთახში (otakhshi) — IPA: /otʰaχʃi/ — Three syllables, o-takh-shi; the kh is the throaty "loch" sound. შევიდა (shevida) — IPA: /ʃɛvida/ — Three even syllables, she-vi-da. შემოვიდა (shemovida) — IPA: /ʃɛmovida/ — The same word with mo, "towards." ქალაქში (kalakshi) — IPA: /kʰalakʰʃi/ — Both k's are aspirated; the k meets sh at the end. წყალში (ts'q'alshi) — IPA: /tsʼqʼalʃi/ — The start has two popped sounds, ts' and q', with no vowel between them. ტყეში (t'q'eshi) — IPA: /tʼqʼɛʃi/ — Two popped sounds in a row, t' and q', then e-shi. ყუთში (q'utshi) — IPA: /qʼutʰʃi/ — q' is made far back in the throat and popped; the word is two syllables. ბოთლში (botlshi) — IPA: /botʰlʃi/ — Two syllables, with the consonants tl-sh together. ჭიქებში (ch'ikebshi) — IPA: /tʃʼikʰɛbʃi/ — ჭ is an ejective ch, a sharp popped sound; then three syllables, ch'i-keb-shi. ბინაში (binashi) — IPA: /binaʃi/ — Three even syllables. სამზარეულოში (samzareuloshi) — IPA: /samzarɛuloʃi/ — Six syllables, sam-za-re-u-lo-shi; the eu is two vowels, e and u, not one. ჩავარდა (chavarda) — IPA: /tʃʰavarda/ — Three syllables, cha-var-da. ჩაასხა (chaaskha) — IPA: /tʃʰaasχa/ — The two a's of cha-a are said as two, cha-a-skha, then the cluster skh. ჩაალაგა (chaalaga) — IPA: /tʃʰaalaga/ — Four syllables, cha-a-la-ga. შეიტანე (sheit'ane) — IPA: /ʃɛitʼanɛ/ — The e and i are separate vowels, she-i-t'a-ne. გადავიდა (gadavida) — IPA: /gadavida/ — Four syllables, ga-da-vi-da. შემოფრინდა (shemoprinda) — IPA: /ʃɛmopʰrinda/ — The pr is said together, pri-nda. იქცა (iktsa) — IPA: /ikʰtsʰa/ — Two syllables, ik-tsa; the kts meets in the middle. გლახა (glakha) — IPA: /glaχa/ — The gl at the start is said together, with no vowel. ორივ (oriv) — IPA: /oriv/ — The final v is a clear v. ჩავარდაო (chavardao) — IPA: /tʃʰavardao/ — Four syllables, cha-var-da-o; the last o is the quotative.
