The English adverb "back" does three jobs: it sends a person to an earlier place (come back), it returns a thing to its owner (give it back), and it points to the rear (step back, at the back). The house list gives back as an adverb of direction, "return/rear". Hungarian shares these jobs among several words. The one chosen here is vissza (/ˈvisːɒ/), because it carries the main sense, movement or transfer back to a place, person or state that was left, and it is the word a learner needs first. Its neighbours are:
- hátra (/ˈhaːtrɒ/, "to the back, backwards") is movement towards the rear of something: Menj hátra! "Go to the back." - hátul (/ˈhaːtul/, "at the back") is the place at the rear: Hátul ülök "I sit at the back." - haza (/ˈhɒzɒ/, "home, back home") is the word for returning to one's own home, where English says "go back".
The first thing to learn about vissza is that it is both a free adverb and a preverb (igekötő), a small word that attaches to a verb and gives it a direction, like back- in "back-track". In a plain statement it is written together with the verb and carries the stress: visszajövök "I come back", visszaadom "I give it back". In some sentences it is left behind after the verb and written separately: nem megyek vissza "I am not going back".
The second thing is the spelling. The sound is a long /s/, and the letters are ssz: Hungarian writes a doubled sz as ssz, never as szsz. So vissza is not visza or viszsza.
The third thing is its family. Vissza forms a comparative, visszább ("further back"), and is the base of visszafelé ("on the way back"), oda-vissza ("there and back"), összevissza ("all over the place, topsy-turvy"), visszhang ("echo") and visszás ("awkward, incongruous"). With verbs it is the most productive of the directional preverbs: visszaad (give back), visszahív (call back), visszanéz (look back), visszatér (return), visszahoz (bring back), visszavisz (take back), visszaküld (send back).
Orthographic points: Hungarian marks vowel length with the acute accent (á é í ó ú) and, for the rounded front vowels, with the double acute (ő ű). The preverb is written together with the verb in a neutral statement (visszajött) and apart from it in the other positions described in Section D. The compound oda-vissza has a hyphen.
FAQ: What does "vissza" mean in Hungarian?
Vissza is the Hungarian word for "back" in the sense of return: Gyere vissza! means "Come back!", and Add vissza! means "Give it back!". It is pronounced "VIS-so", with a long s. Before the verb and written with it (visszajövök) it means "I come back"; after the verb and apart from it (nem jövök vissza) it means "I am not coming back". For "at the back" Hungarian says hátul, for "to the back" hátra, and for "back home" haza.
Key Takeaways
- Vissza means "back" (to an earlier place, owner or state) and is pronounced /ˈvisːɒ/, with a long s written ssz. - In a plain statement it is glued to the verb: visszajövök, visszaadom, visszamentem. - After nem, in questions and focused sentences, and in positive commands it follows the verb as a separate word: nem megyek vissza, mikor jössz vissza?, gyere vissza! - Hátul is "at the back", hátra is "to the back", haza is "back home". Do not use vissza for these. - Useful relatives: visszafelé "on the way back", visszább "further back", oda-vissza "there and back".

vissza /ˈvisːɒ/ has a short i, a long s, and a final a which is /ɒ/, the rounded vowel of British "hot". The stress is on the first syllable, as always in Hungarian, and in a verb with a glued preverb the stress falls on the preverb: VISszajövök, VISszaadom.
Sounds in this lesson that English lacks or treats differently:
- ssz = long /sː/ (a doubled sz): vissza /ˈvisːɒ/, asszony /ˈɒsːoɲ/, hosszú /ˈhosːuː/. Do not pronounce it as "sh". - s = /ʃ/ ("sh") but sz = /s/: este /ˈɛʃtɛ/, szemed /ˈsɛmɛd/. - a = /ɒ/ (British "hot"), but á = /aː/ (as in "father"): add /ɒdd/, város /ˈvaːroʃ/. - é = /eː/, a long closed "ay" without a glide: nézz /neːzz/, nővére /ˈnøːveːrɛ/. - ö = /ø/, ő = /øː/, ü = /y/: jössz /jøss/, főzök /ˈføːzøk/, üres /ˈyrɛʃ/. - gy = /ɟ/ and ty = /c/, palatal stops: Gyere /ˈɟɛrɛ/, egy /ɛɟ/, megyek /ˈmɛɟɛk/. - cs = /tʃ/ ("ch"): kicsit /ˈkitʃit/, csak /tʃɒk/. - Double consonants are held long: vissza, jössz /jøss/, itt /itt/, álljon /ˈaːjjon/. - lj is said as a long /jj/: álljon /ˈaːjjon/, and the spelling does not show it.

These are the grammar rules for vissza in Hungarian:
1. Meaning and use on its own. Vissza names movement or transfer back to a place, person or state that was left. It can stand alone as a command (55.1), or be followed by the destination in the usual case: Vissza a városba (55.6), vissza Budapestre, vissza hozzám "back to me". It does not inflect for person or number.
2. Glued to the verb in a neutral statement. When the sentence simply reports an action, vissza is attached to the verb as a preverb and carries the stress: visszajövök (55.3), visszaadom (55.9), visszamentem (55.14), visszaadok (55.15). The infinitive can carry it too: Ha visszaadni lehet "if it can be given back" (F.2).
3. Left behind after the verb. In three cases vissza follows the verb and is written as a separate word:
- After nem. The negative takes the stress and the verb comes straight after it: Nem megyek vissza (55.4). Never nem visszamegyek. - After a question word or a stressed word. The stressed word stands before the verb, and vissza trails: Mikor jössz vissza? (55.7), Péter holnap jön vissza (55.8), csak éjfélre ért vissza "she only got back by midnight" (55.28). The second sentence says that tomorrow, not another day, is the day of the return. - In a command. Gyere vissza! (55.2), Add vissza! (55.5). A negative command also separates it: Ne gyere vissza! "Don't come back!"
When a modal verb such as kell or akar is present, vissza stays in front of it: Vissza kell mennem "I must go back", Vissza akarok menni "I want to go back". The particle is stands between the preverb and the verb: Már vissza is jöttél? (55.19).
4. Vissza, hátra, hátul, haza. These four are not interchangeable.
- Vissza is return to an earlier place or state, and is used for things given back: Gyere vissza!, Add vissza! - Hátra is direction towards the rear: Menj hátra (55.11), Lépj hátra! "Step back!" in the sense of "backwards". - Hátul is the position at the rear: Hátul ülök "I sit at the back". - Haza is return to one's own home: Menj haza! "Go home!" (back home). Menj vissza! means "go back (to where you were)".
Compare Nézz vissza! "Look back (at what you left)" with Nézz hátra! "Look behind you".
5. Relatives and compounds.
- Visszafelé (55.12) is "on the way back, back-wards", from vissza + felé "towards". - Visszább (55.13) is the comparative: "further back". The superlative is legvisszább. - Oda-vissza (55.10) means "there and back", with a hyphen. - Összevissza is "all over the place": összevissza beszél "he talks all over the place". - Further preverb compounds: visszahív "call back" (Visszahívlak "I'll call you back", with the -lak ending of Lesson 54), visszatér "return", visszahoz "bring back".
6. Agreement and conjugation. Vissza does not affect the verb. The verb agrees as usual and takes the definite conjugation with a definite object. In 55.15 the same verb appears twice: mindent visszaadok (indefinite: mindent "everything" counts as indefinite) and a kulcsot … nem adom vissza (definite: a kulcsot).
Common Mistakes
- Splitting the preverb in a neutral statement. Wrong: Péter vissza jött. Right: Péter visszajött. - Gluing it after nem. Wrong: Nem visszamegyek. Right: Nem megyek vissza. - Vissza for a place at the back. Wrong: Vissza ülök. Right: Hátul ülök. - Vissza for "back home". Menj vissza! says "go back to where you were", not "go home". For home say haza. - Spelling. Wrong: visza, viszsza. Right: vissza. - Pronunciation. The ssz is a long /s/, not "sh". - Vissza as "again". Vissza is not "again". "Try again" is Próbáld meg újra!, not próbáld vissza.
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
Frequency and register. Vissza is among the most frequent adverbs in Hungarian and belongs to every register, from children's games to legal prose. The formal vocabulary of returning (visszaszolgáltat "hand back, return", visszatérít "refund") is built on it.
Everyday phrases.
- Mindjárt visszajövök "I'll be right back" is something one says on leaving a table or a room. People also say Mindjárt jövök, without the preverb. - Vissza a jövőbe is the Hungarian title of the film Back to the Future. - Oda-vissza is "return": a return ticket is an oda-vissza jegy, though at a ticket office people more often say retúr. - Összevissza is "all over the place": összevissza beszél "he talks nonsense". - Visszhang "echo" is vissza + hang "sound": the sound that comes back. - Visszás "awkward, incongruous" belongs to the same family of words.
In poetry. The pair visszaad and nem ad vissza is the stuff of love poetry: giving back and keeping. Ady's poem in Section F uses exactly this pair, with the preverb glued in the first two lines and left behind after nem in the third.
Regional variety. The forms taught here are standard Hungarian and are understood throughout the Hungarian-speaking lands.

In the first stanza the speaker says that he will give back everything that can be given back, and then names the one thing he will keep. The lines that follow say that her eyes will go on looking out from within him.

F-D: Grammar and Literary Commentary
- visszaadok … visszaadni: the preverb is glued in the neutral first line and in the infinitive of line 2, as in Section D, rule 2. Visszaadok has the indefinite ending -ok because its object, mindent "everything", is indefinite. - nem adom vissza: after nem the preverb is left behind, as in Section D, rule 3, so the same verb that opened the poem as visszaadok now stands apart from vissza. The break in the verb marks the break in the poem: the speaker has stopped giving. - adom: the definite ending, because the object is definite. The object, a szemed "your eye(s)", has an article and a possessive ending, and it is held back to the short last line. - szemed: Hungarian says "your eye" in the singular for a pair of eyes (kék a szemed "your eyes are blue"), so the translation puts it in the plural. - Ha visszaadni lehet: lehet is "it is possible", with the infinitive visszaadni. The condition is in itself a small confession that some things cannot be given back.
The poem has twelve lines. In these four short lines the word vissza occurs three times, with the verb ad "give" in three forms (visszaadok, visszaadni, adom vissza). The eyes are the one thing that is kept.

55.19 A kapuban a szomszéd néni megkérdezte: – Már vissza is jöttél?
55.20 Ági azt felelte, hogy elfelejtette a pénztárcáját, ezért jött vissza.
55.21 Zsebre tette a pénztárcát, és visszafutott az állomásra.
55.22 A vonat késett, így Ági még időben visszaért.
55.23 A kalauz megnézte a jegyét, és visszaadta neki.

Part D: Grammar Notes for the Genre Section
- Glued before the verb. In a plain report of what happened, vissza is part of the verb: visszafordult (55.17, 55.27), visszafutott (55.21), visszaért (55.22), visszaadta (55.23), visszanézett (55.24), visszajöttem (55.30). Each of these has the stress on VISsza-. - Left behind after the verb. When something before the verb is stressed or the verb is negated, vissza follows it: futva indult vissza (55.18), ezért jött vissza (55.20), vasárnap este jön vissza (55.25), csak éjfélre ért vissza (55.28), nem jössz vissza (55.29). Compare 55.21, visszafutott, where nothing is stressed, with 55.18, where the stress falls on futva. - In a command. Siess vissza! (55.26) follows the verb, as every positive command does (Section D, rule 3). - Before kell. In 55.16 vissza stays in front of kellett, and the infinitive follows it: vissza kellett mennie. - Mennie. With kell the infinitive takes a personal ending that matches the person who must act: nekem mennem kell, neki mennie kell. Here Ági … mennie kellett is "Ági had to go". - With is. In 55.19 már vissza is jöttél has is between the preverb and the verb, and means "you have come back already". Compare Lesson 54. - A thing returns. In 55.23 the conductor gives the ticket back: visszaadta is the definite ending, because the object is a jegyét. - Dialogue. Direct speech is marked with a dash, and the reporting verb follows a second dash: – Otthon maradt a pénztárcám – mondta. When the speech comes last, a colon introduces it (55.19, 55.26). - Hátra. Everyone in the story goes back to a known place, so the word is always vissza. Had Ági gone to the rear of the train, the word would have been hátra.

Check these in every sentence:
- vissza /ˈvisːɒ/: short i, long s (written ssz), and /ɒ/. The stress falls on the first syllable, and a glued preverb keeps it: visszajövök /ˈvisːɒjøvøk/. - Spelling. Vissza, never visza or viszsza. The verbs are written in one word after the preverb: visszaad, visszamegy. - Voicing assimilation. Aludtam is said /ˈɒluttɒm/ and adta /ˈɒttɒ/ (d → t before t), mondta /ˈmontɒ/, hogy is said /hoɟ/. The spelling does not change. - Palatalisation. Mindjárt is said /ˈmiɲɟaːrt/ and álljon /ˈaːjjon/. Neither is written as it is said. - Doubled sz. A doubled sz is written ssz: vissza, asszony, hosszú. The verb forms jössz /jøss/ and siess /ʃiɛʃʃ/ also end in a long consonant. - Long and short vowels. Hátul has a long á, hely a short e, időben a long ő, félúton a long é and a long ú. Check every accent in every form. - Diacritics used in this lesson: á é í ó ö ő ú ü. Check every one in every form.
