The English preposition "after" does several jobs: it puts one event later than another (after lunch), it describes a place further along a route (after the church), it names the thing that is chased or followed (run after the bus), and it opens a clause (after we had eaten). The house list gives after as a preposition of time, "sequence, following". Hungarian has no prepositions. It puts a small word after the noun, and such words are called postpositions (névutó). The word chosen here is után (/ˈutaːn/), because it carries the main sense, "later than, following", and it is the word a learner needs first. Its neighbours are:
- utána (/ˈutaːnɒ/, "afterwards, after it") is the form of után that stands without a noun: Utána sétálunk "Afterwards we take a walk." - miután (/ˈmiutaːn/, "after", as a conjunction) opens a clause with a verb: Miután megvacsoráztunk… "After we had dinner…" - azután (/ˈɒzutaːn/, "after that, then") and ezután (/ˈɛzutaːn/, "from now on, after this") point to what has just been said. - múlva (/ˈmuːlvɒ/, "in, from now") counts a period from the present: két óra múlva "in two hours". It is not után.
The first thing to learn about után is that the noun before it carries no ending. English "after the lesson" is Hungarian az óra után, with the noun in its bare form: no case ending is added to óra. The second thing is that a pronoun cannot stand before it. English "after me" is not én után but a single word, utánam, in which the person is built into után itself: utánam, utánad, utána, utánunk, utánatok, utánuk.
The third thing is the spelling. The word is után, with a long á, and its personal forms have a single n: utána, never utánna. The conjunction is written in one word: miután, azután, ezután.
Után is the opposite of előtt ("before"). It is also the base of useful preverbs, and these are written together with the verb: utánamegy (follow), utánajár (look into), utánanéz (look up, check).
Orthographic points: Hungarian marks vowel length with the acute accent (á é í ó ú) and, for the rounded front vowels, with the double acute (ő ű). Után has a long á; a missing accent changes the word.
FAQ: What does "után" mean in Hungarian?
Után is the Hungarian word for "after". It is placed behind the noun: ebéd után means "after lunch", and munka után means "after work". It is pronounced "OO-tahn", with the stress on the first syllable and a long á. With a person it becomes one word: utánam "after me", utánad "after you". To join two clauses, Hungarian says miután, not után.
Key Takeaways
- Után means "after" and is pronounced /ˈutaːn/. It stands behind its noun: ebéd után, munka után, a koncert után. - The noun takes no case ending before it: ebéd után, never ebédet után. - With a pronoun, után takes a personal ending and becomes one word: utánam, utánad, utána, utánunk, utánatok, utánuk. - Use miután for a clause (Miután megvacsoráztunk…) and múlva for "in two hours" (két óra múlva). - Useful relatives: utána "afterwards", azután (in speech aztán) "then", ezután "from now on", egymás után "one after the other".
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
után /ˈutaːn/ has a short u (as in "put", but with rounded lips), a long á, and a final n. The stress is on the first syllable, as always in Hungarian. utána is /ˈutaːnɒ/ and utánam is /ˈutaːnɒm/: the stress stays on the first syllable, and the á stays long.
Sounds in this lesson that English lacks or treats differently:
- á = /aː/ (as in "father"), but a = /ɒ/ (British "hot"): után /ˈutaːn/, labda /ˈlɒbdɒ/. - ú = /uː/, long, but u = /u/, short: hosszú /ˈhosːuː/, busz /bus/. - s = /ʃ/ ("sh") but sz = /s/: este /ˈɛʃtɛ/, szaladt /ˈsɒlɒtt/, busz /bus/. - é = /eː/, a long closed "ay" without a glide: séta /ˈʃeːtɒ/, levél /ˈlɛveːl/. - ő = /øː/, ö = /ø/, ü = /y/: eső /ˈɛʃøː/, jövök /ˈjøvøk/, kelünk /ˈkɛlyŋk/. - gy = /ɟ/, ty = /c/ and ny = /ɲ/, palatal stops and nasal: Gyere /ˈɟɛrɛ/, kutya /ˈkucɒ/, menj /mɛɲ/. - cs = /tʃ/ ("ch"): vacsora /ˈvɒtʃorɒ/. - n before k or g is said as /ŋ/: munka /ˈmuŋkɒ/, iszunk /ˈisuŋk/, ránk /raːŋk/. - dt is said as /tt/ and zt as /st/: szaladt /ˈsɒlɒtt/, megvacsoráztunk /ˈmɛɡvɒtʃoraːstuŋk/. The spelling does not change. - Double consonants are held long: itt, akkor /ˈɒkkor/, kell /kɛll/, reggeli /ˈrɛɡɡɛli/.

These are the grammar rules for után in Hungarian:
1. A postposition: it stands behind the noun. Hungarian puts the little word after the noun, where English puts "after" before it: ebéd után (56.2), munka után (56.4), a busz után (56.9). The noun is the thing that comes first in time, or the thing that is followed. The phrase can stand at the start of the sentence, as in 56.4, or after the subject, as in 56.9.
2. The noun takes no ending. Before után the noun stays in its bare form, whatever its role. Wrong: ebédet után, az órának után. Right: ebéd után, az óra után (56.7). The article can be used when the noun is a specific one: az óra után "after the lesson", a koncert után "after the concert". With a number the noun stays singular: két hét után (56.15), not két hetek után. A proper name stands bare: Mari után "after Mari".
3. With a pronoun: one word. The pronouns do not stand before után. The person is added to után as an ending, and the result is written as one word:
- utánam /ˈutaːnɒm/ "after me" (56.3) - utánad /ˈutaːnɒd/ "after you" (56.13) - utána /ˈutaːnɒ/ "after him, her, it" - utánunk /ˈutaːnuŋk/ "after us" - utánatok /ˈutaːnɒtok/ "after you" (plural) - utánuk /ˈutaːnuk/ "after them"
Examples: Gyere utánunk! "Come after us!"; Utánatok megyünk "We'll go after you"; Utánuk jövök "I'll come after them". The form utána without a noun is also the adverb "afterwards, then": Utána sétálunk (56.5). The pronoun én, te, ő may be added for contrast, as in 56.13 (én utánad jövök "I'll come after you"), but the ending is still needed.
4. Time: events, hours and periods. Után places an action later than an event: ebéd után (56.2), az eső után (56.12), hosszú idő után (56.8). It is used for a point on the clock: fél tizenegy után "after half past ten". It is used for a period that has passed: két hét után (56.15). In a series it means "one following the other": egyik nap a másik után (56.14), and the compound egymás után "one after the other".
5. Place and pursuit. Után also marks the thing that is followed or sought: Péter a busz után futott (56.9), A kutya a labda után szaladt (56.10). On a route it marks a position further along: A templom után fordulj balra! "Turn left after the church."
6. Clauses: miután, not után. Után joins a noun to a sentence. To say "after" with a verb, use miután and put the verb after it: Miután megvacsoráztunk, sétáltunk egyet (56.11). In English one can say "after eating". In Hungarian that is a noun with után: evés után "after eating", olvasás után "after reading", and not an infinitive.
7. Related words.
- Utána (56.5) "afterwards" and azután "after that, then": in speech azután is often said and written aztán. - Ezután "from now on, after this": Ezután korán kelek "From now on I'll get up early." - Egymás után "one after the other". - Előtt "before" is the opposite: ebéd előtt "before lunch". - Múlva counts from the present: két óra múlva jövök "I'll come in two hours". Két óra után means "after two o'clock", a point on the clock. - Preverbs: utánamegy "follow", utánajár "look into", utánanéz "look up, check". They are written together with the verb in a plain statement: utánamegyek /ˈutaːnɒmɛɟɛk/ "I'll follow", utánajárok /ˈutaːnɒjaːrok/ "I'll look into it", utánanézek /ˈutaːnɒneːzɛk/ "I'll look it up".
8. Agreement. Után does not affect the verb. The verb agrees with its subject as usual and takes the definite conjugation with a definite object: megkaptuk a levelet (56.15), where a levelet is definite. In 56.6 the object kávét is indefinite, so the verb is iszunk.
Common Mistakes
- Putting a case ending on the noun. Wrong: ebédet után, az órának után. Right: ebéd után, az óra után. - A pronoun before után. Wrong: én után, te után. Right: utánam, utánad. - Spelling. Wrong: utánna, utan. Right: utána, után. The personal forms have one n: utánunk, never utánnunk. - Után for a clause. Wrong: Után megvacsoráztunk, sétáltunk. Right: Miután megvacsoráztunk, sétáltunk. - Után for "in two hours". Két óra után is "after two o'clock". For a period counted from now say két óra múlva. - Pluralising after a number. Wrong: két hetek után. Right: két hét után. - "Named after". Hungarian does not use után for this. It says Róla nevezték el az utcát "The street was named after him". - Pronunciation. The á is long: /ˈutaːn/, not /ˈutɒn/. A short vowel makes it a different word.
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
Frequency and register. Után is among the most frequent postpositions in Hungarian and belongs to every register, from children's talk to legal prose. Miután is the usual written way to open a clause of time; in speech people often use aztán or utána to string events together: Aztán mi lett? "And then what happened?"
Everyday phrases.
- Munka után "after work" names the part of the day that follows the working hours: Munka után moziba megyünk "After work we're going to the cinema". - Egymás után "one after the other" is used for queues, days and events. - Utánajárok "I'll look into it" is what one says when promising to find something out. Utánanézek "I'll look it up" is the lighter form. - Utánam a vízözön "after me the flood" is the Hungarian form of the French après moi le déluge. It describes someone who does not care what happens when they are gone. Tradition ties the French saying to Louis XV or to Madame de Pompadour. - Eső után köpönyeg "a cloak after the rain" is the proverb of Section F.
Regional variety. The forms taught here are standard Hungarian and are understood throughout the Hungarian-speaking lands.

The proverb "Eső után köpönyeg" ("A cloak after the rain"), as collected by János Erdélyi in Magyar közmondások könyve (1851), no. 2291 in the Arcanum digital edition of the book. The proverb is also listed in modern collections of Hungarian sayings, for example szolasok.hu.
This is a proverb, not a poem, so the citation has one line. Its meaning is that help which arrives after the trouble is too late.

Eső után köpönyeg.
F-D: Grammar and Literary Commentary
- eső után: the noun eső "rain" is bare before után, as in Section D, rule 2. There is no article and no ending. - köpönyeg: an old word for a cloak, a loose outer garment worn against rain and cold. The proverb has no verb: the phrase is a picture, and the listener supplies "comes", "is brought" or "is put on". - Meaning: someone who prepares or helps only when the trouble has passed. The sources give the sense "too late to be of any use". - Word order: the time comes first and the thing second, so the sentence runs in the order of events: rain, then cloak. The same order is found in ordinary sentences: az eső után kisütött a nap (56.12).

Part D: Grammar Notes for the Genre Section
- Bare nouns. Every noun before után is without an ending: koncert után (56.16, 56.17, 56.22, 56.30), vacsora után (56.18, 56.19), séta után (56.21), próba után (56.23), reggeli után (56.24). The article is used for a specific event: a koncert után. - Pronoun forms. The people are named by the endings of után: utánuk "after them" (56.26) and utánunk "after us" (56.27). The form utána in 56.20 has no noun and means "afterwards". - A clock time. Fél tizenegy után (56.25) is "after half past ten": fél tizenegy is literally "half to eleven", the Hungarian way of saying 10:30. - Everyone. In 56.28 and 56.29 mindenki után "after everyone" has the pronoun mindenki bare before után, since it is a noun-like word and not a personal pronoun. - Preverb after the stressed part. In 56.24 the stressed phrase holnap a reggeli után comes first and the verb hívom follows it, with the preverb fel left behind. In 56.29 mindenki után is stressed and meg follows jött. In 56.19 and 56.21 nothing is stressed in the verb phrase, and the preverb haza- is glued to the verb: hazamegyünk. - Subjunctive of exhortation. Siessünk (56.25) and Menjünk (56.30) are the "let us" forms of the verbs siet and megy: siess-ünk, menj-ünk. - The -ék ending. Dóráék (56.26) means "Dóra and the people with her". It is formed with the ending -ék added to a name. - Direct speech. Each speaker's line begins with a dash. When a speaker says two sentences (56.30) both stand after the dash. - Utána and után. In 56.20 utána has no noun and means "afterwards"; compare 56.18, where vacsora után has a noun.

Check these in every sentence:
- után /ˈutaːn/: short u, long á, final n. The stress is on the first syllable in every form: utána /ˈutaːnɒ/, utánam /ˈutaːnɒm/, miután /ˈmiutaːn/. - Spelling. Után, never utan. The personal forms have one n: utánad, utánunk, utánuk. The conjunction is one word: miután, azután, ezután. - Voicing assimilation. Szaladt is said /ˈsɒlɒtt/ (dt → tt) and megvacsoráztunk /ˈmɛɡvɒtʃoraːstuŋk/ (zt → st). The spelling does not change. - Nasal before k. Munka /ˈmuŋkɒ/, iszunk /ˈisuŋk/, ránk /raːŋk/. - Palatalisation. Mindjárt is said /ˈmiɲɟaːrt/ and menjünk /ˈmɛɲɲyŋk/. Neither is written as it is said. - Long and short vowels. Hosszú has a long ú, busz a short u, eső a long ő, jövök a short ö, telt a short e, hét a long é. Check every accent in every form. - Diacritics used in this lesson: á é í ó ö ő ú ü. Check every one in every form.
