Lesson 13 Portuguese: A Latinum Institute Modern Language Course

Esse, aquele, que - That

INTRODUCTION

What is “that” in Portuguese?

English “that” does three different jobs, and Portuguese has a different word for each.

First, “that” points: “that book”, “that one over there”. Portuguese points with two words where English has one. Esse means “that, near you”: the thing beside the person you are speaking to, or the thing just mentioned. Aquele means “that, over there”: away from both of you, or far off in time. With a noun they agree like adjectives: esse livro, essa caneta, esses livros, essas canetas; aquele livro, aquela casa, aqueles dias, aquelas férias. When “that” stands for no noun at all, but for an idea, a fact or a thing not yet named, Portuguese uses isso and aquilo, which never change: isso é verdade, “that’s true”; o que é aquilo?, “what’s that?”.

Second, “that” joins a clause to a noun: “the man that lives here”, “the book that you lent me”. This relative “that” is que: o homem que mora aqui, o livro que me emprestaste.

Third, “that” introduces what is said, thought or known: “I know that you’re tired”. This is also que: sei que estás cansado. English can leave this “that” out (“I know you’re tired”); Portuguese never leaves out que.

So the word of this lesson is three words: esse and aquele for pointing, que for joining. (Este, “this”, the near demonstrative, has its own lesson later in the course; it is mentioned here only to show where esse and aquele stand.)

The demonstratives come from Latin: esse from ipse, “himself, the very one”; aquele from an old reinforced form, eccum ille, “see, that one”, where ille also gave Portuguese its article o and its pronoun ele. Que comes from Latin quid, “what”, with which the Latin relative forms (qui, quem) fell together.

This lesson uses European Portuguese, as Lesson 5 declared for this course. Section E describes Brazilian usage.

FAQ: How do you say “that” in Portuguese?

Q: How do I say “that book”? A: Esse livro if the book is near the person you are talking to; aquele livro if it is away from both of you.

Q: How do I say “that’s true”? A: Isso é verdade. When “that” refers to a statement and not to a noun, use isso (or aquilo for something distant).

Q: How do I say “the book that I bought”? A: O livro que comprei. The relative “that”, “which” and often “who” are all que.

Q: Can I leave out “that”, as in “I think it’s late”? A: No. Acho que é tarde: que is required.

Q: What is naquele, daquele, disso? A: Em and de join the demonstratives: em + aquele = naquele, de + aquele = daquele, de + isso = disso, em + esse = nesse.

Key Takeaways: -

Esse is “that” near the listener; aquele is “that” away from both speaker and listener: esse livro, aquela casa -

Isso and aquilo are neuter: they stand for ideas and unnamed things, never before a noun: isso é verdade, o que é aquilo? -

The relative “that” is que: o livro que me emprestaste -

“I know that…” is sei que…, and que can never be left out -

De and em contract with the demonstratives: desse, nesse, daquele, naquele, disso, naquilo

PRONUNCIATION GUIDE

Esse /ˈesɨ/ — closed e, “ESS-uh” with a very short, almost silent final vowel. The feminine essa /ˈɛsɐ/ has an open e, as in English “bet”: “ESS-uh” with the mouth wider. Plural esses /ˈesɨʃ/, essas /ˈɛsɐʃ/. The final s sounds “sh”.

Aquele /ɐˈkelɨ/ — “uh-KEL-uh”, closed e. The feminine aquela /ɐˈkɛlɐ/ has an open e. Plural aqueles /ɐˈkelɨʃ/, aquelas /ɐˈkɛlɐʃ/. The u is silent: qu before e and i is simply /k/.

The same alternation runs through both words: the masculine has a closed /e/, the feminine an open /ɛ/. It is not shown in the spelling, so learn it with the word.

Isso /ˈisu/, “EE-soo”; aquilo /ɐˈkilu/, “uh-KEE-loo”. The double ss is always /s/, never /z/.

Que /kɨ/ — unstressed, “kuh” with a very short vowel, run into the next word: sei que é /sɐj kɨ ɛ/. When it is stressed, at the end of a question, it is written quê and pronounced /ke/: o quê? /u ˈke/, “what?”

Contractions: nesse /ˈnesɨ/, desse /ˈdesɨ/, naquele /nɐˈkelɨ/, daquela /dɐˈkɛlɐ/, disso /ˈdisu/, àquele /aˈkelɨ/ (a + aquele, with the open a of à).

SECTION D: GRAMMAR EXPLANATION

These are the grammar rules for “that” (esse, aquele, que) in Portuguese:

1. Three demonstratives, three places

European Portuguese divides space in three, by the persons of the conversation (Ciberdúvidas):

este — “this”, near me, the speaker (a later lesson)

esse — “that”, near you, the listener: dá-me essa caneta (13.7), the pen in your hand

aquele — “that (over there)”, near neither of us: aquela casa (13.2), aquele restaurante (13.9)

English has only “this” and “that”, so English speakers must decide each time whether “that” is esse or aquele. Ask: is it beside the person I am talking to, or just mentioned by them? Esse. Is it far from both of us? Aquele.

2. The forms

Esse agrees with its noun:

esse (M.SG), essa (F.SG), esses (M.PL), essas (F.PL)

esse livro (13.1), essa caneta (13.7), esses dias, essas jarras

Aquele likewise:

aquele (M.SG), aquela (F.SG), aqueles (M.PL), aquelas (F.PL)

aquele bolo (13.15), aquela praia (13.11), aqueles anos, aquelas férias

They also stand alone as pronouns, “that one”: aquela era a cidade (13.14), “that one was the city”; essa já está vendida (13.22), “that one has already been sold”.

3. Isso and aquilo: the neuter

Portuguese nouns are masculine or feminine, but there are two neuter demonstratives, isso and aquilo (and isto, “this”). They never stand before a noun. They stand for:

a statement or an idea: isso é verdade (13.3); não acredito em nada disso (13.13)

a thing not yet named or identified: o que é aquilo? (13.4, 13.17)

a situation: foi por isso que pensei numa jarra (13.24), “that’s why I thought of a vase”

Isso goes with the listener and what the listener has just said; aquilo with what is distant in space or time: aquilo que ele disse ontem (13.13).

4. Contractions

De and em join the demonstratives, as they join the article (Lessons 5 and 7):

de + esse = desse, de + essa = dessa, de + isso = disso (13.13, 13.19)

em + esse = nesse, em + essa = nessa, em + isso = nisso

de + aquele = daquele, de + aquela = daquela (13.11, 13.23)

em + aquele = naquele (13.8, 13.14), em + aquela = naquela (13.26)

a + aquele = àquele, a + aquela = àquela, a + aquilo = àquilo, with a grave accent

The contraction is obligatory: ✗ de aquela praia → ✓ daquela praia.

5. Esse and aquele in time

Aquele places a time in the distant past: naquele tempo (13.8), “in those days”; naquele dia (13.14). Esse refers to a time just mentioned, and Ciberdúvidas notes that for a future time only esse is used: nesse dia, vou passear, “on that day I’ll go for a walk”.

6. Que, the relative: “that”, “which”, “who”

Que joins a clause to a noun, for things and for people alike:

o livro que me emprestaste (13.10) — the thing is the object of emprestaste

o homem que está ali (13.6) — the person is the subject of está

o comboio que vem do Porto (13.12)

English can drop the relative when it is an object (“the book you lent me”); Portuguese never drops que.

After a preposition, use quem for people: a mulher com quem falei, “the woman I spoke to”. For places, onde: a praia onde passámos as férias (13.11).

7. O que, aquilo que, os que

Que after o, a, os, as or aquilo means “the one(s) that, what”:

o que é aquilo? (13.4), “what is that?”

aquilo que ele disse (13.13), “what he said”; o que ele disse is the same, more everyday

todos os que o provavam (13.15), “all those who tasted it”

8. Que, the conjunction: “that” after verbs of saying, thinking, knowing

sei que estás cansado (13.5)

acho que aquele restaurante fecha (13.9)

disseram-me que o comboio… chega atrasado (13.12)

percebi que aquela era a cidade (13.14)

Que here is compulsory. 13.12 has both kinds: the first que (disseram-me que) is the conjunction, the second (o comboio que vem) the relative.

After verbs of wishing, ordering and feeling, que is followed by the subjunctive: quero que seja (Section F). That will come in later lessons; for now, note that the indicative follows saber, achar, dizer, perceber.

9. Tão … que: “so … that”

Era tão bom que todos pediam a receita (13.15). And in comparisons, do que, “than”: mais bonita do que a outra (13.28).

10. Foi por isso que: emphasis

Portuguese often frames a phrase with é … que or foi … que to put it in focus: foi por isso que pensei numa jarra (13.24), “it was for that reason that I thought of a vase”. Compare Lesson 12, é mais fácil seres tu a trazê-lo.

Common mistakes for English speakers:

Mistake: Leaving out que. ✗ Acho é tarde → ✓ Acho que é tarde. ✗ O livro me emprestaste → ✓ O livro que me emprestaste.

Mistake: Isso before a noun. ✗ isso livro → ✓ esse livro. Isso and aquilo stand alone.

Mistake: Esse for things far away. Pointing at a castle on a hill, say aquele castelo, not esse castelo.

Mistake: Agreement. ✗ aquele casa → ✓ aquela casa; ✗ esse férias → ✓ essas férias.

Mistake: No contraction. ✗ em aquele dia, de isso → ✓ naquele dia, disso.

Mistake: “That” as a conjunction translated by isso. ✗ Sei isso estás cansado → ✓ Sei que estás cansado.

Mistake: Que for a person after a preposition. ✗ o amigo com que falei → ✓ o amigo com quem falei.

SECTION E: CULTURAL CONTEXT

Frequency

Que is among the most frequent words of the language: it joins clauses in nearly every sentence longer than a few words. Isso is constant in conversation: isso mesmo!, “exactly!”; por isso, “so, that’s why”; e depois disso?, “and after that?”.

The three-way system in Portugal

In European Portuguese the three demonstratives este, esse and aquele keep their full force, and speakers distinguish “near me” from “near you” (Ciberdúvidas). A shopkeeper says esse when you point at something beside you, and este of the thing in his own hand.

Brazil

In Brazil the difference between este and esse has largely disappeared in speech: esse is used for “this” and “that” alike, and the distinction survives mainly in formal writing (Ciberdúvidas, citing the Houaiss dictionary). A Brazilian may say esse livro aqui of a book in her own hand. Aquele keeps its sense of distance in both countries.

Expressions: -

“Isso mesmo!” — exactly, that’s it -

“Nem por isso” — not really, not especially (very common in Portugal): Gostaste? — Nem por isso. “Did you like it? — Not really.” -

“Por isso é que…” — that’s why… -

“Aquele abraço” — literally “that hug”: a warm sign-off, especially in Brazil, made famous by Gilberto Gil’s song of that name (1969) -

“O quê?” — what? (stressed, so written with a circumflex)

Source: Luís de Camões, sonnet “Aquela triste e leda madrugada”, lines 1–4, from the Rimas (published after the poet’s death). The text follows Escritas.org and agrees with the Wikipédia de Autores Algarvios edition.

Context: Camões (c. 1524–1580) wrote this sonnet about a lovers’ parting at dawn. The dawn alone saw the farewell, the tears and the words; the poet wants that dawn to be remembered for as long as there is longing in the world. The first word of the sonnet is the word of this lesson: aquela, “that”, pointing at a morning far away in time.

F-B: Authentic Text with Idiomatic English Translation

Aquela triste e leda madrugada, cheia toda de mágoa e de piedade, enquanto houver no mundo saudade quero que seja sempre celebrada.

→ “That sad and joyful dawn, full all through of sorrow and of pity, for as long as there is longing in the world, I want it to be celebrated for ever.” (Latinum Institute translation.)

F-C: Authentic Text Only

Aquela triste e leda madrugada, cheia toda de mágoa e de piedade, enquanto houver no mundo saudade quero que seja sempre celebrada.

F-D: Grammar and Literary Commentary

Aquela … madrugada (line 1) — aquela, not essa: the dawn is far from the poet and from the reader, far back in time, as in naquele tempo (13.8). It is feminine because madrugada is feminine. The whole first line is the object of the sentence, placed first for weight; the verb does not come until line 4.

Triste e leda (line 1) — “sad and joyful”: sad for the parting, joyful for the love it revealed. Ledo, “glad”, is a poetic word today; everyday Portuguese says alegre or contente.

Cheia toda de (line 2) — “all full of”: toda agrees with madrugada, as cheia does.

Enquanto houver (line 3) — houver is the future subjunctive of haver, “there to be”: “as long as there shall be”. Lesson 11 met the same tense in se tiver. The metre of the line asks for saudade in four syllables, sa-u-da-de, where modern speech says sau-da-de in three.

Quero que seja (line 4) — que here is the conjunction, “that”: “I want that it be celebrated”. After querer, que takes the subjunctive, seja (from ser), where English says “I want it to be”. Section D, 8 noted this; later lessons will teach it.

The sonnet thus opens with two of the three “that”s of this lesson: aquela, which points, and que, which joins. The rest of the poem goes on with ela só, “it alone”, and with relative que: as lágrimas … que se acrescentaram, “the tears that swelled”.

Part D: Grammar Notes for the Genre Section

Inês and Tiago are not in the same place, and the messages show how the demonstratives follow the speakers.

Aquilo, aquela for things in the photo, far from both: o que é aquilo? (13.17), aquela jarra azul (13.21). Tiago does not know what the thing is, so he uses the neuter aquilo; once he can name it, he says aquela jarra.

Essa for what the other person has just mentioned: Tiago asks about aquela jarra, and Inês answers essa já está vendida (13.22), “that one (you mean)”. In 13.27 Tiago says essa of the vase Inês has just described. In 13.29 leva essa: the vase is beside Inês, the listener.

Disso (13.19): de + isso, after gostar de. Tiago means the music box, but as an idea, “that thing”.

Relative que: a foto que te mandei (13.16), a jarra que está atrás (13.21), a jarra que a mãe partiu (13.23), aquilo que achámos caro (13.30). In the last, Inês does not name the music box at all: aquilo que, “the thing that”, points back to it through what the two of them said about it (13.20).

Conjunction que: diz que é muito antiga (13.18), acho que (13.19), claro que me lembro (13.24), diz que tem (13.26).

Other ques: que pena! (13.23), “what a pity!”; foi por isso que (13.24), the focus frame; do que (13.28), “than”; sabes que mais? (13.30), “you know what?”.

Há cinco minutos (13.22): há, “there is”, gives “ago”: “five minutes ago”.

Comprou-a (13.22): the object pronoun a, “it” (a jarra), after the verb (Lesson 10).

Ia gostar (13.19): the imperfect of ir + infinitive, “would like”, softer than vai gostar, “will like”.

Claro que (13.24): “of course”, literally “(it is) clear that”.

PRONUNCIATION AND ORTHOGRAPHY NOTES

Esse, essa, isso are spelled with ss, which is always /s/ between vowels; a single s between vowels is /z/ (casa /ˈkazɐ/). Spanish writes ese with one s; Portuguese always esse.

Masculine closed e, feminine open e: esse /ˈesɨ/ but essa /ˈɛsɐ/; aquele /ɐˈkelɨ/ but aquela /ɐˈkɛlɐ/. Neither is marked with an accent.

Aquele, aquilo: qu before e and i is /k/, with a silent u.

Àquele, àquela, àquilo (a + aquele): the grave accent marks the contraction with the preposition a. It is pronounced /a/, open, against the /ɐ/ of aquele: àquele /aˈkelɨ/.

Que is unstressed and has no accent; at the end of a phrase, stressed, it is written quê: o quê?, porquê?

Daquela, naquele, disso, nisso are written as one word, with no apostrophe.

Passámos (13.11), with an accent, is the preterite (“we spent”); passamos, without it, the present (“we spend”). So also achámos (13.30), “we found”, against achamos, “we find”. The accent is the European spelling; Brazil writes passamos and achamos for both.

The IPA in this lesson gives the standard of Lisbon, with each word said on its own, as the course does throughout.
