Lesson 14 Portuguese: A Latinum Institute Modern Language Course

Por, para - For

INTRODUCTION

What is “for” in Portuguese?

English “for” is one word; Portuguese has two, por and para, and the learner must choose between them every time.

Para looks ahead. It names the goal, the person who receives, the destination, the deadline: isto é para ti, “this is for you”; o comboio para o Porto, “the train for Porto”; pronto para sexta-feira, “ready for Friday”; para aprender, “(in order) to learn”. Lesson 6 introduced para; this lesson sets it beside its partner.

Por looks back, or looks through. It names the cause, the reason, the exchange, the price, the person on whose behalf something is done, and the way through: obrigado por tudo, “thanks for everything” (the cause of the thanks); comprei-o por dez euros, “I bought it for ten euros” (the exchange); fiz isto por ti, “I did this for you, for your sake”; passa por Coimbra, “it goes through Coimbra”. It is also the “by” of the passive: escrito por Pessoa, “written by Pessoa”.

A rough rule for a first choice: if “for” could become “in order to”, “intended for” or “by (a date)”, use para; if it could become “because of”, “in exchange for”, “on behalf of” or “through”, use por. Fiz isto para ti means “I made this for you” (you will receive it); fiz isto por ti means “I did this for you” (because of you, in your place).

Por joins the article: por + o = pelo, por + a = pela, por + os = pelos, por + as = pelas. Obrigada pela tua ajuda, “thank you for your help”. Para does not contract in standard writing: para o Porto.

Some English “for”s are not translated at all. “Look for” is procurar, “ask for” is pedir: procuro as chaves, “I’m looking for the keys”; pedi a conta, “I asked for the bill”. “For” of duration is usually durante, or nothing: esperámos durante meia hora, “we waited for half an hour”.

Both words come from Latin. Por comes from prō, “for, in front of, on behalf of”, through a Late Latin and Old Galician-Portuguese form por. Para is a fusion of two Latin prepositions, per ad, “through to”, and in Old Portuguese it was written pera. The forms pelo and pela keep a memory of that old per.

This lesson uses European Portuguese, as Lesson 5 declared for this course. Section E describes Brazilian usage.

FAQ: How do you say “for” in Portuguese?

Q: How do I say “this is for you”? A: Isto é para ti (or para si, para a senhora, to someone you address formally). Para marks the person who receives.

Q: How do I say “thanks for everything”? A: Obrigado por tudo, or obrigada if you are a woman. Thanks are always por: the help is the cause of the thanks.

Q: How do I say “I paid ten euros for it”? A: Paguei dez euros por isso. Price and exchange are por.

Q: How do I say “a ticket for Lisbon”? A: Um bilhete para Lisboa. Destination is para.

Q: Why pelo and not por o? A: Por always joins the definite article: pelo, pela, pelos, pelas. Por o is never written.

Key Takeaways: -

Para looks ahead: purpose, recipient, destination, deadline, point of view: é para ti, para o Porto, para sexta-feira, para mim -

Por looks back or through: cause, thanks, price, exchange, sake, route, agent: obrigado por tudo, por dez euros, por ti, por Coimbra -

Por + o, a, os, as = pelo, pela, pelos, pelas: obrigada pela ajuda -

“Look for” is procurar and “ask for” is pedir, with no preposition -

“For” of time is usually durante: durante meia hora

PRONUNCIATION GUIDE

Por /puɾ/ — unstressed, “poor” said quickly, with the o reduced to the sound of “u” and a single tapped r. It is never the strong r of rua.

Para /ˈpɐɾɐ/ — “PAH-ruh”, both vowels short and dark, the r a single tap. In quick speech it is often reduced to pra /pɾɐ/: vou pra casa.

Pelo /ˈpelu/, “PEH-loo”, closed e; pela /ˈpɛlɐ/, “PEL-uh”, open e, as in English “bet”. Plural pelos /ˈpeluʃ/, pelas /ˈpɛlɐʃ/, with the final s sounding “sh”. The same closed-masculine, open-feminine pattern was seen in esse, essa (Lesson 13).

Por favor /puɾ fɐˈvoɾ/ — two words run together, stress on the last syllable: “poor-fuh-VOR”.

Obrigado /ɔbɾiˈɡadu/, obrigada /ɔbɾiˈɡadɐ/ — the first o is open, the stress on -ga-.

Do not confuse por with the verb pôr /poɾ/, “to put”, written with a circumflex and pronounced with a full closed o.

SECTION D: GRAMMAR EXPLANATION

These are the grammar rules for “for” (por, para) in Portuguese:

1. Para: ahead, towards a goal

Para points to where something is going, in space, in time or in intention:

the person who receives: isto é para ti (14.2), este presente é para a minha mãe (14.8)

the destination: o comboio para o Porto, dois bilhetes para o Porto (14.16)

the deadline: pronto para sexta-feira (14.10), para hoje (14.17)

the purpose, with an infinitive: para chegar à linha três (14.24), tempo para tomar um café (14.26); with que and the subjunctive: para que os filhos pudessem viver em paz (14.15)

the point of view: para mim, “in my opinion, as far as I am concerned”; and the standard of comparison: para uma criança de dez anos (14.13)

When you order in a café, para mim (14.6) is the person who will receive: “for me, a coffee”.

2. Por: back to a cause, or through

Por points back to what causes or justifies something, or to the way through:

the cause or reason: obrigado por tudo (14.1), peço desculpa pelo atraso (14.9), conhecido pelo vinho do Porto (14.12), por causa das obras (14.23); with an infinitive, feliz por ver o rio (14.22)

the exchange and the price: comprei-o por dez euros (14.4), troquei o meu livro por um disco (14.11)

the person on whose behalf, or for whose sake: fiz isto por ti (14.5), lutaram pela liberdade (14.15), deseje-lhe boa viagem por mim (14.29)

the route, “through, by way of”: passa por Coimbra (14.21), por ali, pela porta grande (14.25)

the rate, “per”: trinta euros por pessoa (14.19), duas vezes por semana

the agent of a passive, “by”: escrito por Fernando Pessoa

3. One sentence, two meanings

The choice can change the sense entirely:

fiz isto para ti — “I made this for you” (you will receive it)

fiz isto por ti (14.5) — “I did this for you” (because of you, for your sake, or in your place)

Lutaram pela liberdade para que os filhos pudessem viver em paz (14.15) has both: pela liberdade is the cause they fought for, para que the goal they fought towards.

4. Por and the article

Por always joins the definite article:

por + o = pelo, por + a = pela, por + os = pelos, por + as = pelas

obrigada pela tua ajuda (14.7), pelo atraso (14.9), pelo autocarro (14.14), pela porta (14.25)

It does not join the indefinite article: por um disco (14.11). Para never contracts in standard writing: para a minha mãe (14.8), para o Porto (14.16).

5. Por + infinitive: cause, and what is still undone

Por before an infinitive gives the cause: feliz por ver o rio (14.22). Pessoa’s por te cruzarmos (Section F), “because we crossed you”, uses the personal infinitive of Lesson 12.

Ficar por, estar por + infinitive means “still to be done”: a casa está por limpar, “the house is still to be cleaned”; ficaram por casar (Section F), “they were left unmarried”. Ciberdúvidas notes that tenho exames por fazer suggests the exams are overdue, while tenho exames para fazer simply looks ahead to them.

6. Thanks and apologies take por

obrigado / obrigada por + noun or infinitive: obrigado por tudo (14.1), obrigada pelo aviso (14.24), obrigada por ter vindo, “thank you for coming”

peço desculpa por / pelo: peço desculpa pelo atraso (14.9)

Obrigado agrees with the speaker, not with the person thanked: a man says obrigado, a woman obrigada (14.7).

7. “For” of time

For a length of time Portuguese usually says durante, or nothing at all: esperámos pelo autocarro durante meia hora (14.14), “we waited for the bus for half an hour”; vivi lá dois anos, “I lived there for two years”. Por is also heard (fiquei lá por uma semana), especially in Brazil, but durante is the safe choice. 14.14 shows both English “for”s side by side: the first is pelo, the second durante.

8. Esperar por

“Wait for someone” is esperar alguém or esperar por alguém, and esperar por is very common in Portugal: espera por mim! (14.3), esperámos pelo autocarro (14.14).

Common mistakes for English speakers:

Mistake: Para for thanks. ✗ obrigado para tudo → ✓ obrigado por tudo.

Mistake: Para for a price or an exchange. ✗ comprei-o para dez euros → ✓ comprei-o por dez euros.

Mistake: Por for the receiver. ✗ isto é por ti (as a gift) → ✓ isto é para ti.

Mistake: No contraction. ✗ por o atraso, por a porta → ✓ pelo atraso, pela porta.

Mistake: A preposition after procurar or pedir. ✗ procuro para as chaves, ✗ pedi para a conta → ✓ procuro as chaves, ✓ pedi a conta.

Mistake: Por or para for a length of time. ✗ esperei para uma hora → ✓ esperei durante uma hora, or esperei uma hora.

Mistake: Writing pôr for por. Pôr, with the circumflex, is the verb “to put”; the preposition has no accent.

SECTION E: CULTURAL CONTEXT

Frequency

Por and para are among the commonest words of the language, and por turns up in some of the first phrases a visitor learns: por favor, “please”, literally “for favour”; obrigado por, “thank you for”.

Por and para in fixed expressions

Many everyday expressions are built on the two words and are best learned whole: -

“Por favor” — please -

“Por isso” — so, that’s why (Lesson 13: foi por isso que…) -

“Por acaso” — by chance; also “as it happens” -

“Pelos vistos” — apparently, by the look of it (very common in Portugal) -

“Por enquanto” — for the time being -

“Para já” — for now, to begin with (very common in Portugal): para já, um café -

“Para sempre” — for ever -

“Por mim, tudo bem” — as far as I’m concerned, that’s fine

Brazil

The rules for por and para are the same in Brazil. In speech on both sides of the Atlantic para is shortened to pra, and in Brazil the short forms pra and pro (para o) are often written in informal texts. In formal writing para is always written in full.

Courtesy

To obrigado por… the usual reply is de nada, “it’s nothing”, or in Portugal also não tem de quê.

SECTION F: LITERARY CITATION

Source: Fernando Pessoa, “Mar Português”, first stanza, lines 1–6. First published in the magazine Contemporânea (1922), and collected in Mensagem (1934), the only book of Portuguese poems Pessoa published in his lifetime. The text follows the Wikipedia article on the poem and agrees with the text printed by Estratégia Vestibulares.

Context: Pessoa (1888–1935) addresses the sea that the Portuguese navigators crossed in the age of the discoveries. The stanza counts the cost: the mothers who wept, the sons who prayed in vain, the brides left unmarried. It turns on the two words of this lesson: por, the cause (“because we crossed you”), and para, the goal (“so that you might be ours”).

F-C: Authentic Text Only

Ó mar salgado, quanto do teu sal São lágrimas de Portugal! Por te cruzarmos, quantas mães choraram, Quantos filhos em vão rezaram! Quantas noivas ficaram por casar Para que fosses nosso, ó mar!

F-D: Grammar and Literary Commentary

Quanto do teu sal / São lágrimas (lines 1–2) — the verb agrees with lágrimas, not with quanto: são, “are”, plural. “How much of your salt are tears”.

Por te cruzarmos (line 3) — por + infinitive gives the cause: “because we crossed you, for our crossing of you”. Cruzarmos is the personal infinitive of cruzar for nós (Lesson 12): the infinitive takes the ending -mos to show who crossed. Te, “you”, is the sea, addressed throughout as tu.

Em vão (line 4) — “in vain”, a fixed phrase; vão is also “vain, empty” as an adjective.

Ficaram por casar (line 5) — ficar por + infinitive, “to remain still to be done” (Section D, 5): the brides “remained to-be-married”, that is, were never married, because the men did not come back.

Para que fosses nosso (line 6) — para que, “so that”, the goal, followed by the subjunctive: fosses is the imperfect subjunctive of ser, 2SG. Compare 14.15, para que os filhos pudessem viver em paz.

The stanza is built on the opposition the lesson teaches. Line 3 opens with por, what the sacrifice was caused by; line 6 opens with para, what it was for. The second stanza answers with the most quoted lines of the poem: Valeu a pena? Tudo vale a pena / Se a alma não é pequena, “Was it worth it? Everything is worth it if the soul is not small.”

Part D: Grammar Notes for the Genre Section

The dialogue sorts the English “for”s into the two Portuguese words.

Para, ahead: the destination, bilhetes para o Porto (14.16); the day, para hoje (14.17, 14.18); the person who receives, para a minha avó (14.20, 14.28), para ela (14.20); the purpose, para chegar (14.24), tempo para tomar um café (14.26); the moment counted towards, faltam quarenta minutos para a partida (14.27).

Por, back or through: the rate, por pessoa (14.18, 14.19); the route, passa por Coimbra (14.21), por aqui, por ali, pela porta (14.24, 14.25); the cause, feliz por ver (14.22), por causa das obras (14.23), obrigada pelo aviso (14.24), obrigada por tudo (14.30); the person on whose behalf, por mim (14.29): the clerk sends his good wishes through Ana.

Queria (14.16): the imperfect of querer, “I wanted”, used as the polite “I would like” when asking for something in a shop or office.

Têm, sim (14.27): Ana asked temos tempo?, “do we have time?”; the clerk answers by repeating the verb, now for vocês, “you (plural) have”. Portuguese usually answers yes by repeating the verb, with or without sim.

Faltam … para (14.27): faltar, “to be lacking”, agrees with what is lacking (quarenta minutos, plural), and para marks the moment ahead. So also faltam cinco para as oito, “it’s five to eight”.

Vê-se o Tejo (14.21): the impersonal se, “one sees, you can see”.

Deseje-lhe (14.29): the formal imperative of desejar, used with a senhora or você, with the pronoun lhe, “to her”, after the verb (Lesson 10).

Linha (14.23, 14.24): in a Portuguese station the platform is called a linha, “line, track”.

Bom trabalho! (14.30): “good work!”, a common way in Portugal to take leave of someone who is at work.

PRONUNCIATION AND ORTHOGRAPHY NOTES

Por has no accent. Pôr, the verb “to put”, keeps its circumflex, which the 1990 Orthographic Agreement preserved to tell the two apart: vou pôr o livro na mesa, “I’m going to put the book on the table”.

Pelo, pela, pelos, pelas are written as one word, with no apostrophe. The masculine has a closed e (pelo /ˈpelu/), the feminine an open e (pela /ˈpɛlɐ/).

Para is always written in full in standard Portuguese. The spoken pra /pɾɐ/ appears in writing only in informal texts, song lyrics and verse.

Obrigado, obrigada: the first o is open /ɔ/, and the ending agrees with the speaker.

Esperámos (14.14), with an accent, is the preterite (“we waited”); esperamos, without it, the present (“we wait”). This is the European spelling, as passámos and achámos in Lesson 13; Brazil writes esperamos for both.

Têm (14.27), “they have, you (plural) have”, with a circumflex, against tem, “he has, she has, you have” (14.17). The two are pronounced differently in Portugal: tem /tɐ̃j̃/, têm /ˈtɐ̃j̃ɐ̃j̃/.

The IPA in this lesson gives the standard of Lisbon, with each word said on its own, as the course does throughout.
