Lesson 12 Tamil: A Latinum Institute Modern Language Course

-அ (-a) - To

Introduction

What does "to" mean in Tamil, in "I have to go" or "she came to study"?

English "to" does two different jobs. Before a verb it marks the infinitive: "to go", "to study", "I want to learn". Before a noun it shows direction or the one who receives: "to Madurai", "to me". Tamil keeps the two apart. The second job belongs to the dative case ending -க்கு (-kku), which you met in Lesson 11 in எனக்கு (eṉakku), "to me", and மதுரைக்கு (maturaikku), "to Madurai". This lesson is about the first job, the infinitive, which the vocabulary list gives as "infinitive marker, with verbs".

In Tamil the infinitive is not a word of its own. It is an ending, -அ (-a), added to the verb stem:

- போ (pō), "go" → போக (pōka), "to go" - வா (vā), "come" → வர (vara), "to come" - செய் (cey), "do" → செய்ய (ceyya), "to do" - படி (paṭi), "study, read" → படிக்க (paṭikka), "to study"

You have already met this form without a name: செய்ய in செய்யவில்லை (Lesson 10), கவனிக்க in கவனிக்க வேண்டும் (Lesson 10), and நிறைவேற்ற in Lesson 11. Traditional Tamil grammar counts it among the verbal participles, as the form of the pattern named after the model word செய (ceya).

A note on the script. You will never see the letter அ at the end of an infinitive. In Tamil script every consonant letter carries the vowel a unless a mark takes it away, so the -அ of the infinitive is hidden inside the last consonant letter: the க of போக, the ர of வர, the ய of செய்ய. This is why the headword is printed as -அ, and why the infinitive looks, on the page, as though it ended in different letters. What you look for is not a letter but a pattern: a verb whose last consonant is written bare of any vowel sign, after a stem that has lost its final -உ.

The infinitive stands before the verb it serves, and it carries no tense and no person. English puts "to go" after the verb it depends on: "I have to go". Tamil puts it first: நான் போக வேண்டும் (nāṉ pōka vēṇṭum), literally "I to-go must". The last verb in the sentence takes the tense and the person; the infinitive only names the action. Compare the verbal participle of Lessons 10 and 11, in -உ or -இ: போய் (pōy), "having gone", ties one act to the next, while போக (pōka), "to go", names the act that something else depends on.

The infinitive does five main jobs, all of them met in this lesson:

- it gives the purpose of an action: அவள் படிக்க வந்தாள் (avaḷ paṭikka vantāḷ), "she came to study" - it completes verbs of need, ability, permission, knowledge and liking: போக வேண்டும், வர முடியும், பாடத் தெரியும், கேட்கப் பிடிக்கும் - it follows verbs of beginning and telling: படிக்கத் தொடங்கினாள், வரச் சொன்னாள் - it is the base of the negatives and of the suggestions in -லாம் (-lām): போகலாம், "we may go, let's go" - on its own, in the old language, it is a wish: வாழ்க (vāḻka), "long live", கற்க (kaṟka), "let one learn"

Key Takeaways

- Tamil has no word for infinitive "to": it is an ending -அ (-a) on the verb stem, written inside the last consonant letter: போக, வர, செய்ய, படிக்க - The infinitive comes before the verb it serves and has no tense or person: நான் போக வேண்டும், "I have to go" - Most stems lose a final -உ (பேசு → பேச); many take -க்க (படி → படிக்க); three are irregular: வா → வர, போ → போக, தா → தர - After an infinitive, a following க, ச, த or ப is doubled: வரச் சொன்னாள், பாடத் தெரியுமா - Infinitive + வேண்டும் "must", கூடாது "must not", முடியும் "can", தெரியும் "know how to", பிடிக்கும் "like to", -லாம் "may, let's" - "To" before a noun is not this lesson's form: it is the dative, மதுரைக்கு, எனக்கு

Section D: Grammar Explanation

These are the grammar rules for the infinitive "to" in Tamil

1. What the infinitive is. The infinitive is the verb stem plus the ending -அ. It says what the action is, and nothing more: no tense, no person, no number. Those are left to the verb at the end of the sentence. So போக is "to go" for everyone: நான் போக வேண்டும் (12.1), "I have to go"; நீ போக வேண்டும், "you have to go"; அவர்கள் போக வேண்டும், "they have to go".

2. How it is made. There is no single rule that works from the stem alone, and Tamil courses give the infinitive together with each new verb. These are the patterns:

- Stems in -உ lose the -உ and take -அ. This is the largest group: பேசு (pēcu) → பேச (pēca), "to speak"; பாடு (pāṭu) → பாட (pāṭa), "to sing" (12.4, 12.11); ஆடு (āṭu) → ஆட (āṭa), "to dance"; எழுது (eḻutu) → எழுத (eḻuta) (12.12); சாப்பிடு (cāppiṭu) → சாப்பிட (cāppiṭa); தூங்கு (tūṅku) → தூங்க (tūṅka) (12.13); வாங்கு (vāṅku) → வாங்க (vāṅka) (12.7); ஓட்டு (ōṭṭu) → ஓட்ட (ōṭṭa); விளையாடு (viḷaiyāṭu) → விளையாட (viḷaiyāṭa) (12.14); உதவு (utavu) → உதவ (utava) (12.12); விரும்பு (virumpu) → விரும்ப (virumpa); தொடங்கு (toṭaṅku) → தொடங்க (toṭaṅka). - Stems that end in a consonant take the vowel directly, and ய் or the last consonant is doubled: செய் (cey) → செய்ய (ceyya); சொல் (col) → சொல்ல (colla). - A second large group takes -க்க: படி (paṭi) → படிக்க (paṭikka) (12.2, 12.9); பார் (pār) → பார்க்க (pārkka); எடு (eṭu) → எடுக்க (eṭukka); திற (tiṟa) → திறக்க (tiṟakka); மிதி (miti) → மிதிக்க (mitikka); கவனி (kavaṉi) → கவனிக்க (kavaṉikka); இரு (iru) → இருக்க (irukka); எழுந்திரு (eḻuntiru) → எழுந்திருக்க (eḻuntirukka) (12.13); சமாளி (camāḷi) → சமாளிக்க (camāḷikka). - Some verbs change their stem: கேள் (kēḷ) → கேட்க (kēṭka) (12.8); நில் (nil) → நிற்க (niṟka) (12.5); கல் (kal) → கற்க (kaṟka); விற்க is the infinitive of the verb "to sell". - Three common verbs are irregular: வா (vā) → வர (vara) (12.3, 12.6); போ (pō) → போக (pōka) (12.1, 12.10); தா (tā) → தர (tara), "to give (to me, to us)". - A verb made of two parts changes only the last: கற்றுக்கொள் (kaṟṟukkoḷ), "learn", gives கற்றுக்கொள்ள (kaṟṟukkoḷḷa); பயப்படு (payappaṭu), "be afraid", gives பயப்பட (payappaṭa).

3. The doubled consonant after an infinitive. When the next word begins with க, ச, த or ப, that letter is doubled in standard spelling after the infinitive, because the ending -அ is one of those that "pull" the next hard consonant. The doubling is written as a pulli-letter added to the end of the infinitive (க், ச், த், ப்), so the infinitive is spelled with an extra consonant: வரச் சொன்னாள் (12.6), பாடத் தெரியுமா (12.4), வாங்கக் கடைக்குப் போனார் (12.7), நிற்கக் கூடாது (12.5), கேட்கப் பிடிக்கும் (12.8), படிக்கத் தொடங்கினாள் (12.9), தூங்கப் போகிறேன் (12.13). Before any other letter nothing is added: போக வேண்டும் (12.1), வர முடியும் (12.3), உதவ முடியுமா (12.12), பாட விரும்பவில்லை (12.11). In informal writing the doubling is often left out; here it is kept, as in every earlier lesson.

4. Purpose. An infinitive in front of another verb gives the reason for the action: படிக்க வந்தாள் (12.2), "she came to study"; புத்தகம் வாங்கக் கடைக்குப் போனார் (12.7), "he went to the shop to buy a book". It is not the participle: அவள் படித்து வந்தாள் means "she came having studied", which is a different thing. A formal alternative for the same purpose is the verbal noun with the dative or -காக: படிப்பதற்காக வந்தாள் (paṭippataṟkāka vantāḷ), "she came for the sake of studying".

5. Verbs that take an infinitive. The infinitive is the base for the verbs of need, ability, permission and liking. Each one is the last word of its clause:

- வேண்டும் (vēṇṭum): "must, need to": போக வேண்டும் (12.1), எழுந்திருக்க வேண்டும் (12.13). Its negative is வேண்டாம் (vēṇṭām): "need not, should not, don't": போக வேண்டாம், "there's no need to go, don't go". - கூடாது (kūṭātu): "must not, is not allowed": நிற்கக் கூடாது (12.5). - முடியும் (muṭiyum): "can, is possible": வர முடியும் (12.3). The one who can is in the instrumental -ஆல் (-āl), literally "by me it is possible": என்னால், உங்களால் (12.12). The negatives are முடியாது (muṭiyātu), "cannot", and முடியவில்லை (muṭiyavillai), "could not". - தெரியும் (teriyum): "know how to": பாடத் தெரியும் (12.11). The one who knows is in the dative: உனக்கு, அவளுக்கு. The negative is தெரியாது (teriyātu). - பிடிக்கும் (piṭikkum): "like to": கேட்கப் பிடிக்கும் (12.8). The one who likes is in the dative, as in Lesson 10. - விரும்பு (virumpu): "want to, like to": பாட விரும்பவில்லை (12.11). Here the one who wants is the subject: நான் வர விரும்புகிறேன், "I want to come". - தொடங்கு, ஆரம்பி (toṭaṅku, ārampi): "begin to": படிக்கத் தொடங்கினாள் (12.9). - சொல் (col): "tell (someone) to": வரச் சொன்னாள் (12.6). The person told is in the accusative: என்னை. - -லாம் (-lām): "may, can, let's": போகலாம், வரலாம், பார்க்கலாம். You met கொடுக்கலாமா, "may we give?", in Lesson 10. The ending -லாம் is added to the infinitive, with the final -அ staying as the vowel before it. The question is -லாமா: போகலாமா?, "may we go?" - -ட்டும் (-ṭṭum): "let (it) be": இருக்கட்டும் (Lesson 11) is இருக்க + ட்டும்; போகட்டும், "let him go".

6. "Going to" with போ. The infinitive followed by போ (pō), "go", is the near future: தூங்கப் போகிறேன் (12.13), "I am going to sleep", "I am about to sleep". The same words can also mean "I am going (somewhere) to sleep"; the context tells which.

7. The negatives.

- The past or present negative is the infinitive followed by இல்லை, which fuses into -வில்லை (-villai): விரும்பவில்லை (12.11), "did not want"; முடியவில்லை (12.22), "could not". வரவில்லை is "did not come"; செய்யவில்லை (Lesson 10) is "did not do". - The negative of the future is the infinitive followed by மாட்டேன் (māṭṭēṉ) and its person endings: நான் வர மாட்டேன், "I will not come"; நீங்கள் வர மாட்டீர்கள், "you will not come". - The negative command drops the final -அ of the infinitive and adds -ஆதே (-ātē) to one person you speak to as an equal or a child, or -ஆதீர்கள் (-ātīrkaḷ) to one you respect, or to several: போக → போகாதே (12.10), "don't go"; போகாதீர்கள், "please don't go"; வர → வராதே, வராதீர்கள்; பார்க்க → பார்க்காதே; விட்டுவிட → விட்டுவிடாதீர்கள் (12.20).

8. The infinitive with a subject of its own. The infinitive may have its own subject, which stands before it in the nominative: குழந்தைகள் விளையாட (12.14), "for the children to play". The whole group then does the work of an adjective or adverb for the word that follows.

9. "To" that is not the infinitive. Before a noun, English "to" is the dative: மதுரைக்கு (maturaikku), "to Madurai"; எனக்கு (eṉakku), "to me"; அம்மாவிடம் சொல்ல (12.28) uses -இடம், "to Mother", for the person who is told. "In order to" is the plain infinitive (§4). "How to" is the infinitive with தெரியும் (§5). "Want to" is the infinitive with விரும்பு. There is no case where Tamil needs a separate word for "to".

10. The same ending as a wish. In classical Tamil the form in -க stood by itself as a wish or a polite command to anyone, called வியங்கோள் (viyaṅkōḷ): வாழ்க (vāḻka), "long live", கற்க (kaṟka), "let one learn", உண்க (uṇka), "let one eat". It has the same shape as the infinitive of these verbs. Modern Tamil says "one must" with the infinitive and வேண்டும், and keeps the bare -க for slogans, blessings and the classics. The Literary Citation below is built on it.

Common Mistakes

- A tense ending where an infinitive is needed. *நான் போகிறேன் வேண்டும் is wrong. Say நான் போக வேண்டும் (12.1). - The participle instead of the infinitive. *அவள் படித்து வந்தாள் is "she came having studied". For "she came to study", say படிக்க வந்தாள் (12.2). - An infinitive that has been invented. வாக, தாக and *போ are not the infinitives of வா, தா and போ. Say வர, தர and போக (§2). - A missing doubled consonant. வர சொன்னாள் should be வரச் சொன்னாள் (12.6), and பாட தெரியுமா should be பாடத் தெரியுமா (12.4). - The infinitive after the main verb. *வேண்டும் நான் போக follows English order. The infinitive goes first, and the verb of need last. - The wrong case for "can". Write என்னால் வர முடியும் (12.3), not நான் வர முடியும், and keep the dative for தெரியும் and பிடிக்கும்: எனக்குப் பாடத் தெரியும், not *நான் பாடத் தெரியும். - முடியாது for கூடாது. இங்கே நிற்கக் கூடாது (12.5) means "one must not stand here", a rule. இங்கே நிற்க முடியாது means "one cannot stand here", for instance because there is no room. - A personal ending on the infinitive. The infinitive never changes for person or number: say நாங்கள் போக வேண்டும், not *நாங்கள் போகோம் வேண்டும்.

Section E: Cultural Context

Frequency and Register

The infinitive is among the commonest verb forms in Tamil, because every வேண்டும், முடியும் and -லாம் in the language stands on it, as does every "in order to". Written and spoken Tamil share the infinitive itself, and போக, வர, செய்ய and படிக்க are the same in a book and in the street. What changes in speech is the word after it. வேண்டும் is shortened to -ணும் (-ṇum): போகணும் (pōkaṇum), வரணும் (varaṇum), "(I) have to go, come". The negative in -வில்லை is shortened to -லை: வரவில்லை (varavillai) becomes வரலை (varalai), "didn't come". In careful speech and in writing, the full forms are used.

Do You Know How to Speak Tamil?

தமிழ் பேசத் தெரியுமா? (tamiḻ pēcat teriyumā?), "Do you know how to speak Tamil?", is the question a learner of the language should expect to be asked, and the modest answer is கொஞ்சம் தெரியும் (koñcam teriyum), "I know a little". The pattern is the one of 12.4 and 12.11: the one who knows is in the dative, the thing known is an infinitive, and தெரியும் ends the sentence. A learner who tries the language is usually met with patience: புரிந்துகொள்ள முடியவில்லை (purintukkoḷḷa muṭiyavillai), "I couldn't understand", is a perfectly good thing to say, and so is மெதுவாகப் பேசுங்கள் (metuvākap pēcuṅkaḷ), "please speak slowly".

Two Words for a Bicycle

The dialogue below uses the English loanword சைக்கிள் (caikkiḷ). Tamil also has its own word, மிதிவண்டி (mitivaṇṭi), which is made of மிதி (miti), "tread, pedal", and வண்டி (vaṇṭi), "cart, vehicle". The verb in it is the one the father uses in the dialogue, மிதிக்க (mitikka), "to pedal".

Set Phrases

- போகலாம்! (pōkalām!) — "Let's go!" - வர வேண்டாம் (vara vēṇṭām) — "don't come", or "there's no need to come" - வர முடியுமா? (vara muṭiyumā?) — "Can you come?" - தெரியாது (teriyātu) — "I don't know (how to)" - தமிழ் வாழ்க (tamiḻ vāḻka) — "long live Tamil": the old wish in -க, heard in slogans

The citation is couplet 391 of the Tirukkuṟaḷ (திருக்குறள்) of Tiruvaḷḷuvar, the first couplet of chapter 40, கல்வி (kalvi), "Learning", in the book on wealth, பொருட்பால் (poruṭpāl). The Tirukkuṟaḷ is the collection of 1,330 couplets on virtue, wealth and love already cited in Lessons 10 and 11. The couplet is built on the ending of this lesson: கற்க, கசடற, நிற்க and தக are all in -அ or -க, and the printed text shows the doubled consonant after one of them (அறக் கற்பவை). The text follows the editions at thirukkural.io, ytamizh.com and kuralthiran.com, which agree.

kaṟka kacaṭaṟak kaṟpavai kaṟṟapiṉ niṟka ataṟkut taka.

"Learn faultlessly whatever is worth learning, and after learning, stand by it as is fitting."

— Tiruvaḷḷuvar, Tirukkuṟaḷ 391 (translation: Latinum Institute, kept close to the Tamil). G. U. Pope's verse translation reads: "So learn that you may full and faultless learning gain, / Then in obedience meet to lessons learnt remain."

F-C: Original Script Only

கற்க கசடறக் கற்பவை கற்றபின் நிற்க அதற்குத் தக.

F-D: Grammar and Literary Commentary

The couplet gives two instructions, learning and living by what is learned, and each is a verb in -க. In modern Tamil the same sense would be expressed with the infinitive and வேண்டும்: குற்றமில்லாமல் கற்க வேண்டும் (kuṟṟamillāmal kaṟka vēṇṭum), "one must learn without fault", and அதற்குத் தக்கபடி நிற்க வேண்டும் (ataṟkut takkapaṭi niṟka vēṇṭum), "one must stand as befits it". This paraphrase is ours, not a quotation from a commentator.

Grammar notes:

- கற்க (kaṟka), நிற்க (niṟka): the -க ending is here the old wish or command to anyone, "let one learn", "let one stand" (Section D §10). It has the shape of the infinitive of கல் and நில், which are the forms you now meet before வேண்டும்: கற்க வேண்டும், நிற்க வேண்டும். - கசடற (kacaṭaṟa): கசடு அற, "so that the fault is cut away", that is, "faultlessly". அற is the infinitive of அறு (aṟu), "to be cut off, to cease", used as an adverb. In the printed line the next word begins with க, so the infinitive takes the doubled consonant, as in Section D §3: கசடறக் கற்பவை. - கற்பவை (kaṟpavai): "the things that are learned", from கல் with the future-type relative form -ப்ப- and the neuter plural -அவை. The traditional reading is "whatever is worth learning", and the translation follows it. - கற்றபின் (kaṟṟapiṉ): கற்ற is "having learned" as an adjective, and பின் is "after": "after learning". - தக (taka): the infinitive of தகு (taku), "to be fitting", used as an adverb, "so as to befit". Modern Tamil keeps the adjective தக்க (takka), "fitting". Here அதற்குத் தக is "in a way that fits it", where "it" is what has been learned.

Part D: Grammar Notes for Genre Section

- One form, many helpers. The infinitive is the same in every line, and the helper after it gives the meaning: வேண்டும் "must" (12.16, 12.26, 12.27, 12.28), தெரியாது "does not know how" (12.18), முடியவில்லை "could not" (12.22), முடிகிறது "can" (12.24), வேண்டாம் "need not" (12.19, 12.23), கூடாது "must not" (12.21), தெரிந்துவிட்டது "has come to know" (12.25). Kavitha, who is learning, uses the dative (எனக்கு, உனக்கு) with தெரியாது and the instrumental (என்னால்) with முடியும், as in Section D. - Two infinitives in a row (12.16): ஓட்டக் கற்றுக்கொள்ள வேண்டும், "to-ride to-learn must". The first infinitive belongs to the second, and the second to வேண்டும். Read from the right: must, learn, ride. - The conversion before the infinitive (12.17, 12.26, 12.27): போய்ப் பழகலாம், வந்து பழக வேண்டும், போய்ச் சாப்பிட வேண்டும். A participle in -உ or -இ ("having gone", "having come") says what comes first, and the infinitive after it says what is to be done. After போய் a following க, ச, த or ப is doubled as well, as after an infinitive. - -லாம் on the infinitive (12.17, 12.30): பழகலாம் is பழக + லாம், "we may practise", and போகலாம் is போக + லாம், "I may go". The first is a suggestion for two, the second a permission for one. Compare கொடுக்கலாமா in Lesson 10. - The negative command (12.19, 12.20): விட்டுவிடாதீர்கள் is the polite negative command of விட்டுவிடு, built on the infinitive விட்டுவிட. Kavitha uses the polite plural to her father, and he uses the bare imperative to her: மிதி, பார் (12.21, 12.23). A parent speaks to a child in the familiar singular, and a child speaks to a parent in the polite plural. - வேண்டாம் in two senses (12.19, 12.23): பயப்பட வேண்டாம் is "don't be afraid" and வேகமாகப் போக வேண்டாம் is "don't go fast". After an infinitive, வேண்டாம் is both a mild prohibition and the denial of a need. - An infinitive before a verb of feeling (12.29): இதைக் கேட்க மகிழ்வாள் puts "to hear" before the feeling, as English does in "glad to hear". Tamil needs no extra word between them.

Pronunciation Guide

போக (pōka), வர (vara), படிக்க (paṭikka)

- IPA: /poːɡa/, /ʋaɾa/, /paɖikːa/ - The ending -அ is a short a, light and open, never a long aa and never the English "uh". Say it quickly but keep it clear: POH-ga, VA-ra, PA-dik-ka. - க has two sounds. A single க between vowels or after a nasal is voiced, like g: போக is "POH-ga", வாங்க is "VAANG-ga". A doubled க்க is long and unvoiced: படிக்க is "PA-dik-ka", with a held k. - ர in வர is a single light tap of the tongue, as in Spanish pero, as in Lesson 11.

நிற்க (niṟka), கற்க (kaṟka), கற்பவை (kaṟpavai)

- ற் before க or ப is a rolled r: "NIR-ka", "KAR-ka", "KAR-pa-vai". In speech நிற்க is often heard as நிக்க (nikka), but the written form keeps the ற். - ற்ற in கற்றபின் (kaṟṟapiṉ) is said "tr", as in Lesson 11: "KAT-ra-pin".

தூங்க (tūṅka), வாங்க (vāṅka)

- ங்க is the nasal ng followed by a voiced g, as in English "finger": "THOONG-ga", "VAANG-ga". - The vowels ஊ (ū) and ஆ (ā) are long. Hold them twice as long as the short உ and அ.

தொடங்கினாள் (toṭaṅkiṉāḷ), விளையாட (viḷaiyāṭa), காலை (kālai)

- ள (ḷ) is a retroflex l: the tongue tip curls back, and it sounds between l and r. It is not the same as ல (l), the ordinary l, and not the same as ழ. - ழ (ḻ) in தமிழ் (tamiḻ), எழுத (eḻuta), குழந்தைகள் (kuḻantaikaḷ), மகிழ்வாள் (makiḻvāḷ) is the retroflex approximant [ɻ], as in Lesson 11: "tha-MIZH". - ட (ṭ) between vowels is a retroflex d, [ɖ]: பாட is "PAA-da", விளையாட is "VI-lai-yaa-da".

பயப்பட (payappaṭa), பாடத் (pāṭat), தெரியும் (teriyum)

- The doubled ப்ப in பயப்பட is a held p: "PA-ya-pa-da" has a tiny break before the last syllable. - The pulli on the infinitive carries over to the next word. In "pāṭat teriyumā" the த் doubles the following த, and the two are said as one long dental t: "PAA-dath-the-ri-yu-maa". In speech the doubling is shorter than the written form suggests. - ெ and ே: தெரியும் has the short e, "THE-ri-yum", and வேண்டும் has the long ē, "VAYN-dum". The vowel length changes the word.

Other Sounds in This Lesson

- ஐ (ai) in சைக்கிள் (caikkiḷ), கடை (kaṭai), காலை (kālai) is the vowel of English "eye", shorter: "SAIK-kil", "KA-dai". - ண்ட in வேண்டும் (vēṇṭum), மணிக்கு (maṇikku): the retroflex n joined to a voiced retroflex d: "VAYN-dum". - ன்ற in நன்றாக (naṉṟāka), என்றாள் (eṉṟāḷ): said "ndr": "NAN-draa-ga". - Final -ஆம் in என்றாளாம் (eṉṟāḷām): the hearsay particle, said "-laam" with a long ā and a retroflex ḷ: "EN-draa-laam".
