What does "in" mean in Vietnamese?
For the autodidact student: English "in" places something inside a container, a building, a space, a period of time or a group. Vietnamese does most of this work with trong (level tone, no mark), "in, inside, within": trong nhà, "in the house"; trong túi, "in the bag"; trong hai ngày, "within two days"; trong số các bạn, "among you".
Trong is not a preposition in the European sense. It began life as a noun meaning "the inside", and it still behaves like one: it is paired with its opposite ngoài, "the outside", it can stand as a place on its own (ở trong, "to be inside"), and it takes the thing it is the inside of directly after it, with no linking word: trong nhà is literally "inside-house". Many grammars of Vietnamese call words of this kind locative nouns (danh từ chỉ vị trí). For the learner the practical rule is simple: put trong in front of the noun, exactly where English puts "in".
Three things differ from English:
1. "Be in" needs ở. English says "Mother is in the house." Vietnamese normally uses the verb ở, "to be located, to stay, to live": Mẹ ở trong nhà. Ở also works alone as the everyday word for "in / at" a town, country or address: Bà tôi sống ở Huế, "My grandmother lives in Huế." Use ở for a place on the map, trong when you mean inside something that has walls, edges or limits. 2. Time and groups. Trong + a length of time means "within, during": trong hai ngày, trong vòng một tiếng ("within an hour"). Trong lúc or trong khi + a clause means "while". Trong số + a group means "among, (out) of": trong số các bạn, "among you". 3. No article, no case, no change of form. Trong never changes. There is no "the" or "a" to add: trong phòng is "in the room" or "in a room" as context requires.
Etymology. Trong "inside" is native Vietnamese, not Sino-Vietnamese. It goes back to Proto-Vietic \k-lɔːŋ*, "inside", and further to a Proto-Austroasiatic word for "insides, belly" (Wiktionary, cross-checked). It has a homonym: the adjective trong, "clear, limpid", as in nước trong, "clear water", trời trong, "clear sky". Context always separates them.
Orthography. Trong carries no tone mark: it is the level tone (thanh ngang). Do not confuse it with tròng (eyeball socket, halter), trông (to look, to watch) or trống (drum; empty). Ở is the letter ơ with the hook-above (hỏi) tone mark. Written without its marks, "o" is a different word altogether.
- trong = in, inside, within; it goes before the noun: trong nhà "in the house" - To say something is in a place, use ở (trong): Tiền ở trong túi. "The money is in the bag." - ở alone = in / at a town, country or address: ở Hà Nội, ở Huế - trong + time = within, during; trong lúc / trong khi = while; trong số = among - trong is the opposite of ngoài ("outside"); many proverbs and idioms pair them

The IPA in this lesson is a broad transcription of the Hanoi standard, with the tone written in Chao tone letters after each syllable (the convention of Wiktionary). The six tones, in Hanoi values:
- Level, no mark: ma /maː˧˧/ "ghost" - Falling, grave accent: mà /maː˨˩/ "but" - Rising, acute accent: má /maː˧˦/ "mother (Southern); cheek" - Dipping, hook above: mả /maː˧˩/ "grave, tomb" - Broken rising, tilde: mã /maː˧˥/ "horse (Sino-Vietnamese)", with a glottal break in the middle of the vowel - Heavy, dot below: mạ /maː˧˨ʔ/ "rice seedling", short, low, ending in a glottal catch
Key words for this lesson:
- trong /t͡ɕawŋ͡m˧˧/ — In Hanoi, tr is pronounced like ch: a soft "ch" as in English "cheap", with the tongue flat and without any puff of air. In the South and Centre it is retroflex, /ʈ/, with the tongue tip curled back. The ending -ong is the hard part for English speakers: say "ong" but close your lips at the very end, so that the word finishes with the lips shut and slightly rounded: [ŋ͡m]. The vowel sounds close to the "ow" of English "town", but short. - ở /ʔəː˧˩/ — The vowel ơ is like the vowel of English "fur" without any r. The hỏi tone dips down and, in careful speech, rises again at the end. The syllable begins with a light glottal stop, as every Vietnamese word that is written with a vowel first does. - ngoài /ŋwaːj˨˩/ "outside" — ng at the start of a word is the "ng" of English "singer", never "finger". - trong số /t͡ɕawŋ͡m˧˧ so˧˦/ "among"; trong lúc /t͡ɕawŋ͡m˧˧ luk͡p˧˦/ "while"

These are the grammar rules for trong in Vietnamese:
1. Position: trong + noun. Trong always comes before the noun it locates, and nothing links them: trong nhà, trong túi, trong ao. The phrase can follow the verb (Mèo ngủ trong bếp, 7.3) or open the sentence as a scene-setter (Trong phòng lạnh quá, 7.4). When it opens the sentence, it sets the stage and the rest of the sentence comments on it.
2. Being in a place: ở (trong). To say where something is, use the verb ở:
- X ở trong Y — X is inside Y: Tiền ở trong túi. (7.2) - X ở Y — X is in / at Y (a town, a country, an address, or anywhere "inside" is not the point): Bà tôi sống ở Huế. (7.12)
Ở trong stresses inside. Ở alone is the neutral "in / at". After verbs of activity (sleep, swim, sit), trong can stand without ở: Cá bơi trong ao. (7.5)
3. Existence: có … trong / trong … có. "There is X in Y" uses có, "there is, there exists":
- Có một con chó trong vườn. (7.6) - Trong lớp tôi có ba mươi học sinh. (7.8)
The second order, with the place first, is very common.
4. Putting something in: để … trong; bỏ … vào. With để "to put, leave", trong marks where the thing ends up: Tôi để sách trong cặp. (7.7) When the stress falls on the movement into, Vietnamese uses vào, "to enter; into": bỏ sách vào cặp, "put the book into the bag"; đi vào trong nhà, "go into the house".
5. Time: trong + period; trong lúc / trong khi + clause.
- trong hai ngày — within two days (7.9); trong vòng một tiếng — within an hour - trong tuần này — (some time) this week; trong tháng này — this month - Trong lúc mẹ nấu cơm, … — while Mother cooks … (7.13); trong khi is the same, slightly more formal
6. Among: trong số. Trong số + a group = "among, of": Trong số các bạn, ai biết bơi? (7.10) The group can be a pronoun phrase: trong số đó, "among them, of those".
7. The pair trong / ngoài. Ngoài "outside" is trong's mirror, and it follows the same rules: ngoài vườn "out in the garden", ở ngoài "outside". Proverbs love the pair: Trong nhà chưa tỏ, ngoài ngõ đã tường. (7.15)
8. bên trong, ở trong, phía trong. Adding bên "side" or phía "direction" makes the noun nature of trong visible: bên trong "the inside, inside", phía trong "the inner part". Bên trong ngôi nhà = "the inside of the house".
- Using trong for a city or country. English "in Hanoi", "in Vietnam" is ở Hà Nội, ở Việt Nam, not ~~trong Hà Nội~~. (The Northern idiom trong Nam "down in the South" is a special case: see Section E.) - Leaving out ở in a "be" sentence. English "The money is in the bag" is not ~~Tiền là trong túi~~. Là links two nouns ("X is a Y"); location takes ở: Tiền ở trong túi. - Adding a word for "of" or "the". ~~trong của nhà~~ and ~~trong cái nhà~~ (for plain "in the house") are wrong. Trong nhà is enough. - Mixing up trong and vào. "Come in!" is Vào đi! or Mời vào!, not ~~Trong đi~~. Trong is where something is, vào is movement into it. - Dropping or misplacing the marks. trong (in), tròng (eye socket; halter), trông (look), trống (drum; empty) are four different words. Ở (be at) is not ơ (an interjection, "hey").
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
Frequency and register. Trong is among the most frequent words in written Vietnamese, and it is neutral in register. It is as at home in a news bulletin (trong năm nay, "in the course of this year") as in the kitchen (trong tủ lạnh, "in the fridge"). Trong khi "while, whereas" is a favourite connective of journalists and academics.
Inside and outside the country. Vietnam is a long, narrow country, and speakers from the North traditionally speak of the South as "inside" and of the North as "outside". A Hanoian says vào Nam, "go in to the South", and trong Nam, "in the South", while a Saigonese speaks of ngoài Bắc, "out in the North", and goes ra Hà Nội, "out to Hanoi". This is why dictionaries give trong a sense "in (a southern place)", and why trong Sài Gòn is natural in a Hanoian's mouth where ở Sài Gòn would be expected elsewhere. The usage goes back to the historical division of the country into Đàng Trong ("the Inner Region", the southern realm of the Nguyễn lords) and Đàng Ngoài ("the Outer Region", the northern realm of the Trịnh lords) in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Regional pronunciation. In Hanoi trong sounds like chong /t͡ɕawŋ͡m˧˧/. In Huế and Saigon the tr is retroflex, /ʈawŋ͡m˧˧/, and many Northern schoolchildren are drilled in spelling precisely because tr and ch sound the same to them. In the South, ở has a low dipping-rising contour, /ʔəː˨˩˦/, and the hỏi and ngã tones merge.
Idioms.
- trong lòng — "in (one's) heart", inwardly: buồn trong lòng, "sad at heart" - trong tay — "in (one's) hands", in one's power: nằm trong tay, "to be in someone's hands" - trong nhà chưa tỏ, ngoài ngõ đã tường — the family is the last to know (7.15) - trong ấm ngoài êm — "warm inside, calm outside": peace at home and abroad - trong sạch, trong trắng (from the adjective trong, "clear") — "clean, pure, innocent"
The literary echo. Every Vietnamese schoolchild knows the opening line of Nguyễn Du's Truyện Kiều (The Tale of Kiều, early 19th century): Trăm năm trong cõi người ta, "A hundred years, in this world of ours" (7.14). It is the first line of the national poem, and trong stands at its centre.

Anonymous folk poem (ca dao), Trong đầm gì đẹp bằng sen, in the six–eight (lục bát) metre. It is traditional and anonymous, and taught in Vietnamese schools. The text is as given in the Thi Viện anthology (thivien.net, "Khuyết danh Việt Nam"), and it agrees with the school editions:
> Trong đầm gì đẹp bằng sen, > Lá xanh, bông trắng lại chen nhị vàng. > Nhị vàng, bông trắng, lá xanh, > Gần bùn mà chẳng hôi tanh mùi bùn.

Trong đầm gì đẹp bằng sen, Lá xanh, bông trắng lại chen nhị vàng. Nhị vàng, bông trắng, lá xanh, Gần bùn mà chẳng hôi tanh mùi bùn.
"In the pond, what is as lovely as the lotus? Green leaves, white flowers, and golden stamens set among them. Golden stamens, white flowers, green leaves: it lives near the mud, yet never takes the reek of mud."
Trong đầm gì đẹp bằng sen, Lá xanh, bông trắng lại chen nhị vàng. Nhị vàng, bông trắng, lá xanh, Gần bùn mà chẳng hôi tanh mùi bùn.
Trong as the opening frame. The poem begins exactly as 7.4 and 7.8 do: Trong đầm sets the scene, and the rest of the line comments on it. Gì đẹp bằng sen is a rhetorical question: "what is as beautiful as the lotus?", meaning "nothing is". Bằng after an adjective means "as … as": đẹp bằng sen, "as beautiful as the lotus".
Adjectives follow nouns. Lá xanh, bông trắng, nhị vàng: "leaf green", "flower white", "stamen yellow". Vietnamese puts the describing word after the noun, and needs no "is" between them.
The reversal. Line 3 repeats line 2's three images in reverse order: nhị vàng, bông trắng, lá xanh. The eye moves from the outer leaves to the inner stamens, then from the centre back out. Rhetoric calls this pattern chiasmus. In lục bát metre the last word of each six-syllable line rhymes with the sixth syllable of the eight-syllable line after it: sen / chen, xanh / tanh. The vàng that closes line 2 is taken up again at the start of line 3.
Gần … mà chẳng … "near … yet not at all …". Mà here is concessive ("and yet"), and chẳng is an emphatic, slightly literary không. The last line is quoted on its own as a moral proverb: a person of integrity can live in a corrupt place without being tainted. The lotus is widely regarded as Vietnam's national flower, and the whole poem pictures its purity inside (trong) the muddy pond.
Homonym note. The poem praises what is pure, but it does not use the adjective trong "clear". That word appears in the praise of purity elsewhere: trong sạch "clean, pure", trong trắng "innocent".

Kinship words as pronouns. Mother and daughter never say "I" and "you". The mother calls herself mẹ and calls Lan con ("child"). Lan calls herself con and calls her mother mẹ. So con means "you" in 7.16 and "I" in 7.17. The speaker tells you which. This is the normal, warm way family members speak.
Questions with có … không. "Is there X in Y?" is Trong Y có X không? (7.20, 7.22). The natural answer repeats the verb: Có ("yes, there is") or Không (có) ("no, there isn't"). A bare vâng would only acknowledge the question. Lan adds ạ to be polite to her mother (7.21, 7.23).
Trong phòng có …: the place first. Nearly every line of the dialogue opens with trong + place and then says what exists there with có. This is the most natural way to describe a room, a house or a bag in Vietnamese (compare 7.8).
Classifiers. Một cái giường, một cái bàn (7.19): objects counted with a number need a classifier, and cái is the general classifier for things. For animals it is con (7.6); for buildings ngôi (7.12).
The time uses together. Trong tuần này "this week, within the week" (7.26), trong tháng này "this month" (7.27), trong lúc + clause "while" (7.29).
ở trong nhà "stay indoors" (7.28). Here ở is fully a verb, "to stay", and trong nhà is where. Compare 7.1, where ở is "to be (located)".
trong lòng (7.30) — lòng is "heart, bosom, the inside of a person", and ở trong lòng mẹ "in Mother's heart" is a tender set phrase. Lúc nào cũng: "at any moment also" = "always".
Particles. à (7.16) asks for confirmation ("…, then?"). đây (7.17) points to the present moment ("right here, right now"). nhé (7.28) softens a request ("…, OK?"). đi (7.30) urges ("go on"). thôi (7.30) closes a topic ("well then, that's enough").

The letters of this lesson. Vietnamese adds to the Latin alphabet ă, â, đ, ê, ô, ơ, ư, and marks five of its six tones with à á ả ã ạ. A letter may carry a vowel mark and a tone mark at once: ở (ơ + hỏi), ngồi (ô + huyền), những (ư + ngã), nhớ (ơ + sắc), cặp (ă + nặng).
Where the tone mark goes. On the main vowel of the syllable. In ươ it goes on the ơ: người, vườn, giường, tường. In iê it goes on the ê: tiền, biết, nhiều. In uyê it goes on the ê: chuyện. With oa, current school usage writes khóa, hóa (mark on the second vowel); older texts write khoá, hoá. Both are correct. This course uses the first.
tr and ch. In Hanoi, trong and chong sound the same, /t͡ɕ/. The spelling keeps the old distinction, which Central and Southern speech still preserve, /ʈ/ for tr. Learn the spelling with the word.
Final -ong, -ông, -ung. Close the lips at the end: trong [t͡ɕawŋ͡m], không [xəwŋ͡m], chung [t͡ɕuŋ͡m]. Final -c after o, ô, u also closes the lips: học [hawk͡p], lúc [luk͡p].
d, gi, r. In Hanoi all three begin with /z/: gì /zi˨˩/, giường /zɨəŋ˨˩/, rồi /zoj˨˩/. The South has /j/ for d and gi, and r is often /ɹ/ or /ʐ/.
Tone pairs to drill. trong (in) / trông (look) / trống (empty) / tròng (eye socket); ở (be at) / ơ (hey!) / ớ (oh!); mẹ (mother) / me (tamarind); bà (grandmother) / ba (three; father in the South).
