Boethius, reborn, recalls in macronized Latin prose the sundial and water clock he built at Theoderic's command for Gundobad, king of the Burgundians: the miscalibrated dial Rome obeyed for ninety-nine years, the unequal Roman hours, the maker he once ranked lowest and now corrects, and the cell without a clock in which he learned what eternity is.
